To have him on the ITBR podcast means so much to me, and he has taught and continues to teach me so much about why I fell in love with literary studies and studying the Humanities. John (don't worry he said I can call him that) addresses the current crisis of where the Humanities fits into the university system. He calls it "Academia in Freefall." I ask him whether he believes academic freedom is going strongly or is under attack? What has happened to tenure positions, why are professors being fired for teaching controversial topics, and how can you still be passionate about your academic work right now? And why would someone, like myself, get a PhD in English when I knew full well that there most likely wouldn't be a university position waiting for me on the other side? The acclaimed classical composer and conductor talks his most recent projects and how the music of John Williams continues to be a source of inspiration Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden Peter Boyer continues to be one of the most talented, versatile and successful living American classical composers. His brilliant symphonic music is celebrated across the United States and around the world as some of the most accessible and enjoyable repertoire composed in the recent years. In 2022, Peter Boyer produced the fourth album of his orchestral music, ‘Balance of Power' and Other Orchestral Works. Released on the Naxos label as part of their successful “American Classics” series, the album features world premiere recordings of symphonic works composed by Peter Boyer over the last number of years, with the composer on the podium conducting the world-renowned London Symphony Orchestra. The music of Peter Boyer is unabashedly tonal, earnest and very emotional, yet composed with a thorough attention to detail to achieve a high level of craft in the treatment of the orchestral resources in the great tradition of such American luminaries of symphonic music as Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. Boyer himself acknowledges how John Williams's music is the gold standard for any orchestral composer when it comes to write memorable tunes and applying them with sensational dramatic instinct. In this conversation, Peter Boyer talks about his recent projects (including the recording of “Balance of Power”) and to offer more insightful and in-depth thoughts about his approach to composition, the challenges of writing for orchestra, his views on the contemporary classical scene and how John Williams remains for him a role model and an ongoing source of inspiration. Today's podcast features my friend Adeline, and a wonderful song: “This Little Light of Mine”. This little light of mine (tap knees), I'm gonna let it shine, (arms: up down up down) This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. (dance in a circle) This iconic American gospel song has been energizing and uniting diverse groups of people for nearly a century. It's impossible to sing this song without moving your body and feeling a spark of excitement and purpose. It is a great song to sing with kids because the words are so repetitive, and the message is so positive! We've added some simple actions to each verse, and suggested a flashlight activity for the second time through -- kids and flashlights always seem to be drawn to each other, right? Want to see a video version of this activity where I sing and dance with 3 young musicians to this song? Becoming Better by Shifting Your Mindset and Taking Control of Your Life with Bricia Lopez Growing up, our parents tell us what to do and what not to do. Thus, even as we grow into our unique selves, we still feel restricted in doing and pursuing what we want. We base our decisions as adults on the things we learned and heard growing up. But becoming better  does not happen this way. You should shift your mindset and start taking control of your life. That's when freedom, contentment, and fulfillment come in. In this episode, Bricia Lopez talks about the most valuable lessons she learned from motherhood and running a family business. She shares the experience of being pregnant and giving birth during the pandemic, along with navigating the new normal as an entrepreneur. Bricia also lets us take a peek at what it's like working with her family in their business. She discusses how understanding you're in control is crucial in decision-making and becoming better as a person. If you're stuck in a mindset that keeps you from moving forward, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how motherhood pushed Bricia to become a better person. Find out what generational wealth is and what it does for families. Episode Highlights How Bricia Handled the Pandemic She was 20 weeks pregnant in March last year and gave birth in July. The experience of carrying her baby through the pandemic was grounding for Bricia. The pandemic put things into perspective. At the end of the day, it's all about taking care of her children. Because she was high-risk, she had to stay home and let her team manage her restaurant. Becoming Better for Her Children For Bricia, giving birth to a girl was a completely different experience from giving birth to a boy. After she gave birth to her baby girl, felt the urge of becoming better. She took care of her body during the first few weeks after her pregnancy and dropped her bad habits. Bricia admits that she did not take care of her body after giving birth to her firstborn. This time around, becoming better at this aspect of motherhood was her priority. Being pregnant during the pandemic made it easier for Bricia to slow down. Navigating the New Normal Bricia is now back to the grind 100%. She has someone who helps take care of her daughter. Despite being busy again, she feels at peace because she loves what she does. She doesn't feel guilty leaving her daughter behind because she got to spend so much time with her one-on-one. With the economy opening up, it feels like the roaring 20s again for businesses. Guelaguetza Restaurant Their website is now called ilovemole.com. It's easier to remember than the previous guelaguetza.com. The restaurant is in Koreatown in Los Angeles. They specialize in Oaxacan cooking. Building Generational Wealth Bricia loves working with her family. She runs the family business with her brother and sister. They're building something that will last for the next generation. They are also becoming better at handling their finances than their parents. For Bricia, generational wealth allows you to be in control of your time. As a result, you can be more creative. You are also more at peace and present. By building generational wealth, she is allowing her children to explore what they want without having to worry about money. Mental Graduation We are continuously graduate mentally to another state of mind. We go through mental high school and mental college. Then, we get to the place where we open doors to new dimensions of financial knowledge. Becoming better means you have to keep learning. It's important to remember that age doesn't define your capacity to learn new things. Taking Chances Bricia didn't realize how big of a hold her parents had on her life until they retired. She always wanted to be a graphic designer, but her father was against it. Bricia wished she didn't listen and just went for it. She realized she could do anything when her parents retired and moved away. She and her siblings bought the restaurant from their parents and took over. Making a decision and following through it is the hardest skill to learn and lean on. No one has control of your life but you. Understanding this will make you realize that you can do anything you want. How Resilience Impacted Bricia's Decision-Making Adversities will always happen in life and business; it's the way the world works. You can decide to stop and backtrack, or you can stop, learn, and move forward. Once you understand why something happened, you'll realize it's not that big of a deal and develop a new perspective. Opportunities come when you're not scared. You keep becoming better as you face and deal with issues and adversities. Becoming better at self-compassion is one of the hardest things to learn in life. Yet, it's one of the most useful tools you can have. The Most Important Value Bricia Wants Her Children to Have For Bricia, it's confidence. If you're innately confident, you can make anything happen no matter what the world tells you. Innate confidence is different from given confidence or fake confidence that makes a person delusional. Instead of giving her son fake confidence, she builds his self-esteem by letting him fail, explore, and do things for himself. How Bricia Feels Radically Love Working in the hospitality industry, her life revolves around serving people. And so, Bricia feels radically loved when people listen to her and give their time, compassion, and energy without taking. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [06:14] “I just need to become a better woman. I need to become even a better version of me for [my daughter].” [15:16] “Generational wealth means having more control of your time, without the stress of other things.” [18:51] “No one's too old to learn anything.” [22:37] “Getting used to the fact that making a decision and following through that decision is probably the hardest skill to learn and lean on.” [29:27] “[Confidence is] something that you have to innately understand. They have to fail and then learn that they can do it themselves.” About Bricia Bricia Lopez is a restaurant owner, entrepreneur, and best-selling author. She is the co-owner of an Oaxacan restaurant, Guelaguetza. Additionally, Bricia is a co-founder of Mole and More, together with her siblings. They sell proprietary cocktail mix, I Love Micheladas, and mole paste. Beyond this, Bricia is also the co-founder and co-host of the Super Mamás Podcast. In tonight's episode of Aly After Dark I have John Brenna who is currently working on The Last Drive-In as Production Manager and Music Superivor on Shudder. He wrote and recorded the opening and ending themes. Basically any music you hear not in the movie is John. He is a very accomplished musician playing all his life. He has released true American Classics such as "The Lizard Took a Shit and it Smells Like Human Shit," "Don't Get That Coke in my Dickhole," and "Come on Mary Lou (It's Prom Night 2)". You can check out his entire oeuvre here: https://shopjb.bandcamp.com/We have a discussion about how we got into music and horror movies, Troma, our musical beginnings, and so much more. There's some talk about Halloween and John Carpenter (The topic just comes up every episdoe, I can't help it. I love them too much), there's a little bit of a behind the scenes look at how the music is recorded on The Last Drive-In, and a few teases of what's to come in season 3. Get your little tidbits of information right here and salivate you mutant freaks! I love y'all, thank you for listening. John did all the heavy lifting for me here, I didn't have to do anything. I only had to edit out three uhms and a couple silent parts, that it. This was the easiest episode to edit yet. Anyway, this episode is a blast if you like music, how it's made, horror movies, and even more music. John plays us out with his song, "Hamburgers". He surprised me, I had no idea the guitar was just right there! Enjoy everyone! Check out John Brennan's social media accounts. They're all variations on bad techno. Also here's John's bandcamp again, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC! He's been doing it for a long time and has some great stuff. I've bought mulitple singles on vinyl and a cassette from him. Listening in order is really cool because you get to see how he grows as an artist. There were so many shout outs in the episode if you want me to put your social media links here feel free to shoot me an email at alyafterdark@gmail.com and I will!Bandcamp: https://shopjb.bandcamp.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/badtechnohttps://shiptoshoremedia.com/ - A killer company with stellar releases of game soundtracks, city pop, Joe Bob stuff, and many more things. (which also won for best revival of a play). Leon was a guest on WFPL's Strange Fruit last year, and told us he hadn't always planned on a career in the arts. "Basically when you grow up poor in the South, your parents are itching for you to do something that they know something about," he explained. "My choice was to be a teacher, a preacher, a doctor or lawyer, something like that—and being the first person in my family to go to college." He headed to Atlanta, where his involvement in the Atlanta University Center introduced him to people like Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, and LaTanya Richardson. Soon he was teaching theatre workshops in the prison system and nursing homes, and working with and for the homeless in Atlanta. "That really rewarded me," he said. "I thought God had put me here to have a life in the arts."Photo: kennyleon.com

With Mark Lawson. This year the shelf of great American authors unexpectedly lengthened when a novel called Stoner by John Williams, forgotten since its first appearance five decades ago, was republished to widespread acclaim. At the same time two neglected novels by Renata Adler received enthusiastic reviews when brought back into print after thirty years and two little known writers, 89 year old James Salter and 76 year old Edith Pearlman, were hailed as newly discovered geniuses. Salter, Pearlman and Adler reflect on literary resurrection and Julian Barnes and Ruth Rendell discuss the comeback of Stoner. Producer: Ellie Bury.
