In his new, Oscar-shortlisted “The Alabama Solution”, which he co-directed with Charlotte Kaufman, Andrew Jarecki ("Capturing the Friedmans", "The Jinx") focusses on inmates of the Alabama Department of Corrections who use contraband phones to organize dissent within the system, even sustained labor strikes, all aimed at improving the dramatically overcrowded, squalid, abusive, and even fatal conditions within the state's 14 prisons.   To date, Alabama's “solution” to these problems–and the attention it has drawn from the Federal DOJ– has been to build larger prisons that promise to provide no increase in the system's number of beds, but do promise with their massive financial overruns to feather the beds of the governor's friends and supporters.  Jarecki and Kaufman, in league with the prisoners they depict here, hope to change that.   You can watch “The Alabama Solution” on HBO Max.   Follow: @andrew.jarecki on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Each year in New York City, thousands of young people in foster care face a life-altering transition: aging out of the system at 18—or 21 if they opt in—often without stable housing, financial support, or guidance into adulthood. This week, Leslie speaks with Nancy Jarecki, longtime board member of New Yorkers for Children (NYFC), and Eyhdi (Eydi) Osorio, NYFC Scholar, Youth Advisory Board Vice President, and aspiring mental-health professional, about what it truly means to age out of foster care—and how targeted support can change a life's trajectory.Together, they explore the realities of aging out, the housing crisis facing foster youth, the critical role of emotional support and mentorship, and how NYFC builds community, confidence, and opportunity through programs like Career Choice, which funds trade and technical education and housing. This episode offers an honest, hopeful look at the foster care system—and the impact of investing in young people as they transition into adulthood.Hosted on Ausha. Chuck Jarecki ranched in Montana from 1961 to the 1990s, using grazing to heal lands broken by the plow that never grew enough to justify continued crop farming. He had success using the classic management tools: develop stockwater in places cattle don't like to go, graze the most preferred species moderately, and give grasses time to grow back before you graze them again. Chuck won't elaborate much, but what he says is worth listening to and he has lived out his brief advice, starting with instructions from his mentor, Don Ryerson, to learn with "your face in the ground and your butt in the air." In 2010, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange released a secret video of a U.S. helicopter attack on Iraqi civilians. U.S. authorities charged him with disclosing state secrets and demanded his extradition to the U.S. Assange took refuge inside the Ecuadorean embassy in London and spent a dozen years first inside the embassy and later jailed in the U.K.'s high security Belmarsh Prison. He was released last year after pleading guilty to a single charge under the Espionage Act and now lives in Australia.Last week, Julian Assange returned to the international stage, walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival alongside Vermont filmmaker Eugene Jarecki. Jarecki's new film, “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” chronicles Assange's crusade to reveal inconvenient truths that governments seek to bury. Jarecki's new film has been garnering awards, receiving the first-ever Golden Globe Award for best documentary, and taking the special jury prize of the L'Oeil d'or, or Golden Eye award, the documentary film prize at Cannes. At the Golden Globes, the award Jarecki received recognized his work for “combining the skills of a journalist with the voice of a poet.” The statement added, “At a time when truth is under pressure, Eugene's work reminds us of the power of storytelling to provoke, enlighten, and ultimately defend democracy itself.”Eugene Jarecki has won Emmy and Peabody awards for his previous films, including documentaries about Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, and the military-industrial complex.Jarecki lives in Vermont and co-founded the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield. As Nancy continued on her entrepreneurial path in Los Angeles, she was tapped in early 1986 by the creators of a startup cable network to help develop and launch a cable network called Movietime. The following year she was an instrumental part of the launch team for the network now known as E! Entertainment Television. During this time, Nancy met her husband, Andrew Jarecki, who was visiting Los Angeles to launch his company, MovieFone. She soon moved to New York to join him, helping him develop the business, and starting their new family. In 1999, the Jareckis sold MovieFone to AOL Time Warner started a movie production company as well as moved their family to Rome, Italy, where they were completing work on the Oscar-nominated film Capturing the Friedmans documentary. While in Rome, where they lived for two years, Nancy had an experience that gave her the idea to start her own innovative beauty products company, bettybeauty, inc. Visiting a hair salon, she noticed women leaving with small “take home” bags. When she inquired as to what they were, the receptionist told her they were a bit of extra hair color for “the hair down there – to make it match!” Realizing that women across America would love a commercially-available product to color this important area, Nancy began developing the first safe color for the hair down there to fulfill this unmet need in the beauty market. Now know as the popular and award winning specialty hair color kits. Nancy's creation of these innovative products won her multiple awards in 2007 and 2008; ‘Innovator of the Year' by Independent Cosmetics Manufactures and Distributors. As well as winning the 2008 prestigious Cosmetic Executive Women's, ‘indie' award*. (*considered the Oscars of the beauty industry). Nancy also suffered a massive brain aneurysm and made a miraculous recovery from her near fatal death. She is now working on a book dealing with the subjects of adversity, spirituality and business. Nancy Jarecki, an entrepreneur and mother of three, didn't know what was hitting her as she walked the red carpet at Ali's Head Case premiere. What she thought was a strange little fainting spell was actually a subarachnoid hemorrhage. And while almost 50% of people do not make it, Nancy did. She shares the story of that day's events, the brain surgeries and many months of recovery, all of which, according to her doctors, were made better by her attitude and optimism. She seems to think that having part of her skull sewn into her abdominal wall for “safe keeping” is a hoot. And it kinda is! Let's just say that keeping a sense of humor is also part of the story. CRISIS – watch trailer NICHOLAS JARECKI (Director/Producer/Screenwriter) is a best-selling author, screenwriter and award-winning director who has produced five films. Crisis is his second picture as writer/director. His last movie, Arbitrage, was made for $13 million and went on to gross over $52 million in international theatrical and simultaneous video on demand rentals, making it the highest grossing ‘‘Day and Date'' independent film in cinema history. Arbitrage received many accolades and earned a “Best Actor” nomination for its star Richard Gere at the Golden Globes®. The National Board of Review named it one of its Top 10 Independent Films of 2012. At 16 Jarecki was hired as a technical consultant on the 1995 film Hackers, where his job was to consult with the actors and director about computer hacking. Jarecki took an interest in filmmaking on the set of Hackers, recalling, “I kept noticing that there was this guy that the actors seemed to really look up to and respect, so I asked, ‘Who’s that?’ and they told me he was the director. Then I knew it was clear what I wanted to do.” At 19 Jarecki graduated from New York University and went on to try directing music videos to get noticed in the film community. After no one expressed interest in his video services he decided to interview his favorite directors to see how they got their start. A literary agent introduced by a family friend liked the idea and got Jarecki a $50,000 advance from Doubleday to write the 2001 book Breaking In: How 20 Film Directors Got Their Start. In this week's episode of Aligned & Ambitious Radio, we are going to tackle the “not so sexy” side of business. I'm referring to all things payroll and retirement. I am really excited to have Jessica Jarecki, who is an ADP District Manager, and Taylor Schlenker, a Retirement Specialist, on today's episode. Jessica and Taylor share all the benefits to payroll as well as retirement accounts. They also debunk a few common myths and fears around these topics. Some of the topics we will be diving into include: Things to keep in mind if you are unsure about getting on payroll. Debunking common fears and myths around payroll. When you should consider starting a retirement account. The differences between 401k and Simple IRA plans. I know that for me, I've had an incredible experience with ADP so far. My biggest advice to you as you listen to this episode is to not put this on the back burner. When NBA players walked off the court in protest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake in late August, they announced a surprising precondition for their return: that the arenas in which they played should be used as voting sites in the November 2020 election. The idea had been floated by a group of activists led by Eugene Jarecki, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning documentary filmmaker from Vermont. Jarecki is co-chair of the non-partisan Election Super Centers Project. Numerous professional sports teams have now agreed to have their stadiums and arenas serve as election centers, including the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, Pittsburgh Steelers, Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards. Jarecki explains how the idea became reality with the help of basketball superstar LeBron James, coach Doc Rivers, and others, and why they view this move as a vital strategy to defend fair elections and American democracy.
