Look at many of the items around your home and some will probably have been imported from abroad by ship. Moving goods around the world by sea is the easiest and most cost-effective way to do it. But what has made it more practical is the invention of the shipping container. They're not the most amazing thing to look at, but because of their design, and especially their universal size, it means they can be loaded and unloaded on to huge vessels at any port that is big enough to accommodate them. The standardisation of these simple metal containers in the 1950s and 60s marked a turning point in world trade, driving down costs and ultimately leading to globalisation. Inside these versatile metal boxes could be anything from nappies to cars, and they are transported on container ships that ply our seas and oceans. They have been described as 'the monsters of the seas' because of their huge size. The very biggest are almost half a kilometre long and are piled high with more than 20,000, 20-foot-long (6.06m) boxes. In fact, the world's largest, The Port of Rotterdam, has a capacity of 24,346 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) – an exact unit of measurement used to determine cargo capacity for container ships and terminals. With around 5,500 container ships globally, it's incredible to think about the amount of goods being moved around the world. However, because we now rely so much on these global shipments of goods, there can be problems when things go wrong. In 2021, the Ever Given, loaded with 18,000 containers, got stuck in the Suez Canal – blocking an important trade route. Countless businesses were affected by the delay in receiving their goods. One shipping company, Maersk, said the "ripple effects on global capacity and equipment" were significant. Despite the occasional problems, our demand for goods is increasing, and so the shipping container is here to stay. George Griffiths from S&P Global Platts told the BBC: "We're seeing a lot more of the ultra-large container ships being built… the proportion of new ships that are moving over 14,000 containers is staggering." Each container can have a lifespan of up to 25 years. And even when the effects of wind, waves and loading takes its toll, some find a new lease of life as land-based storage units or even used as houses and hotels! 词汇表imported 进口goods 商品,货物cost-effective 划算的container 集装箱universal 通用的,广泛适用的vessel 船,大船port 港口world trade 世界贸易globalisation 全球化versatile 多功能的,多用途的ply 定期往返(于)cargo (轮船或飞机装载的)货物terminal 码头shipment 运输trade route 贸易路线ripple effect 连锁反应staggering 惊人的,令人震惊的take its toll 造成破坏a new lease of life “重获新生”,使用寿命延长storage 储物,储藏

My guest is Henrique Ribeiro of S&P Global Platts, a leader in providing price information, industry market insights and analytics. In addition to his work in lithium/battery metals price information and analysis, Henrique is also a host on the Platts Future Energy Podcast. In this episode, we discuss Platts role in providing information about lithium and other battery metals. We cover their methodology for making price assessments and how they factor in lithium product specifications. We discuss the significance of the “spot” price and why it can vary so significantly from contract price and information found in import/export statistics. I ask about quality control in the Platts process and how they deal with contacts that may try to “massage” the information they provide. I ask Henrique for his thoughts on the lithium supply and demand imbalance and when price may “soften”. We discuss the questions Henrique is most often asked by various industry stakeholders. Platts does not forecast lithium prices. We will discuss the logic behind that practice. In a world of many different prices for the same lithium grade, you will learn the value of the spot price as an indicator. We close with a slow rapid fire. Find out more at: spglobal.com

As the world's economies begin to reopen and embrace the post-pandemic era, the energy industry is at a critical juncture. Energy shortages have already gripped Europe and Asia, with LNG spot prices having been driven to record highs. Is this the first major crisis of the energy transition?   While energy shortages and higher prices would normally motivate new investment, the present-day investor is reluctant to finance new fossil fuel projects; a hesitancy driven by both activist calls to decarbonize, and the net zero targets set out by world leaders.   Will the vision of a carbon-free future be lost to the practical reality of energy shortages as countries turn back to coal? Will the political and economic be asserted to drive forward investment in solar and wind projects? And how will the LNG markets navigate between our reliance on fossil fuel energy today and aspirations to transition to a low-carbon energy future?   Join us as host Susan Sakmar, Author of ‘Energy for the 21st Century' examines the first major crisis of the energy transition with the Head of Global Generating Fuels & Electric Power Pricing at S&P Global Platts, Ira Joseph.

The international oil benchmark, Brent crude, rose above $45 per barrel on Monday, supported by an improvement in Chinese factory data, rising energy demand and hopes for an agreement in the United States on more coronavirus-related economic stimulus. Brent, against which Nigeria’s crude oil is priced, climbed by $0.81 to $45.21 per barrel as of 6:40pm Nigerian time on Monday. the latest S&P Global Platts survey found that Quota compliance by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies fell to 96 per cent in July, from 106 per cent in June, with their collective production increasing by 1.10 million barrels per day. OPEC+ output is set to rise even further in August, with the 22-country coalition hiking its quotas by about two million bpd in anticipation of higher global oil demand. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support
