How did it happen that after decades of being confined to the margins of cinema, this grand myth of Wakanda was weaved out of the history and culture of the “most broken people?” To conclude the story of the making of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ta-Nehisi Coates returns to the beginning of the journey with producer Nate Moore, and reflects on the ancestor who made it all possible with artist Simone Ledward Boseman and director and co-writer Ryan Coogler. White supremacy, the system which enabled the descendants of Europe to steal an outsized portion of this world's labor and land, has always been tied to a specious notion of beauty. What does it mean that Wakanda and Talokan give us a beauty created not to justify enslavement but to celebrate freedom? Ta-Nehisi Coates dives deep into the beautiful and complex portrayals of Shuri, Namor, Wakanda, and Talokan with actors Letitia Wright and Tenoch Huerta and cultural consultant Dr. Gerardo Aldana. Every film is a machine, a complex device made of people with a myriad of jobs and responsibilities. Ta-Nehisi Coates breaks apart the machinery of Wakanda Forever, zooming into the creative processes of actor Dominique Thorne (Riri Williams), costume designer Ruth E. In an episode filled with music from Göransson's soundtrack and score and some clips from director Ryan Coogler's audio diaries, we learn more about what it takes to build a film that not only entertains but makes us feel something in the process. The story of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever emerged out of the very real death of Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played T'Challa. But there was an earlier version of the script, a different story written when no one involved in the movie knew that Chadwick was gravely ill. Ta-Nehisi Coates is joined by director and co-writer Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole to discuss the original screenplay, the changes they needed to make, what makes a Black Panther film, and their special collaboration on both movies. Ta-Nehisi also talks to producers Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, and Nate Moore, Executive of Production and Development, to learn about the 22-year journey to bring Black Panther to the screen and what excites them about Namor, comic book storytelling, and making movies. Patrick is joined by Aram in Toronto to talk about ANOTHER Golden State Warriors' bad loss, this time at the hands of the lowly Orlando Magic, 94-90. They discuss what their biggest concerns are in these final 10 games of the season, the resurfacing of awful non-championship habits, Klay Thompson's need for a mental break, and how the W's can right the ship. Additionally, in another Warriors' Multiverse session -- if Patrick and Aram went back in time to before the 2020 draft would they trade Jordan Poole and the pick that became James Wiseman for Wendell Carter Jr. and the pick that became Tyrese Haliburton? Lastly, in a welcome dose of good news, Paola Mardo, a huge Oakland Warriors supporter and Patrick's BIGGEST fan rises up the podcast world ranks! The struggle to save lives from COVID-19 is far from over, and neither is America’s struggle against racism. As we report on hate crime and anti-racist action, Cathy and James hop on the phone and check in with a couple of our friends in podcasting: Paola Mardo (who tells stories from the Filipino diaspora on Long Distance) and Ahmed Ali Akbar (who covers the social, cultural, and political experiences of American Muslims on See Something Say Something). We took this time to unpack the ugly, reckon with the bad, and speak to the good that we hope comes out of this pivotal moment in history. We hope you’re all getting the support you need out there, and would love to hear from you — just write to community@selfevidentshow.com, and please take care. Big thanks to them for taking on all of the work required to keep this up. We shared a list of anti-racism resources in a recent newsletter. Since circumstances evolve day by day, we’ll continue using the newsletter to bundle and share resources that might help you get through it all. You can sign up for that here. With their blend of kitsch decor, exotic drinks, hula skirts and loud shirts, nothing said fun quite like the tiki bars and Polynesian-themed cocktail lounges that sprang up in the US back in the Fifties and the Sixties. Paola Mardo's an audio producer based in California whose show 'Long Distance' tells stories about the Filipino diaspora. She first got interested in tiki bars when she found out about all the Filipino bartenders who got jobs at these drinking spots. She even did her university thesis about them! And with these bars now experiencing a bit of a revival, she reviews their problematic cultural heritage.
