“My ancestors would often say only the most broken people can be great leaders” - Namor The death of star Chadwick Boseman left a huge hole in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that may never be filled. Ryan Coogler decided that instead of recasting his hero, that his follow up to the 2018 Best Picture nominated film would be a film that dealt directly with the loss of the Black Panther. Focusing instead on the great surrounding characters from the original film, this sequel takes us to a Wakanda where Queen Ramonda and Shuri are the only remaining members of its royal family, the world wants to mine it's land for Vibranium, and they are about to go to war with the underwater kingdom of Talokan led by Namor the Submariner.

There is more than one queen that reigns over Wakanda. That queen is costume designer Ruth Carter, a 4-time Academy Award nominee (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Black Panther, Amistad and Malcolm X), and winner for 2018's Black Panther. She is also an Emmy nominee for Roots, a 3-time Costume Designers Guild Award winner (Coming 2 America, Black Panther, Career Achievement Award), a 3-time Critics' Choice Award winner (Black Panther, Dolemite Is My Name, Black Panther: Wakenda Forever), and so much more.  Carter is responsible for the iconic outfits that Marvel favorites like Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) wear. She was also tasked with creating the outfits for the newly-introduced world of Talokan, like Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and Namora (Mabel Cadena). Carter continues to raise the bar higher and higher, not only for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for any individual in the profession. In result, Carter was honored with her fourth individual Academy Award nomination for the film, where the film itself garnered five nominations (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects). When asked about The Hollywood Reporter article that was penned by The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood around omissions of Black women for Academy Award nominations, Carter responded, “It's not myopic representation. It's global and I find representation in Bardo. I find representation in Everything Everywhere All At Once. I find representation in Pinocchio. I find representation in Camille Friend, in Angela Bassett, in myself, in Ludwig Göransson. There is a lack of representation of black voices and black images, and for that, I feel sad. Women directors, for that, I feel very sad. I do hail the efforts of those who have films that do speak to the Black community and such. I cannot turn my back on that type of representation as well this year.”  We will find out the winners of the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12.   What's next for Ms. Carter? She will continue to stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by designing for the reboot of Blade. While tight lipped, she did reveal that, “Mahershala [Ali] has been training for weeks… months. I think we are going to see another Mahershala that I haven't seen yet because he is dedicated.” Blade will be directed by Yann Demange and will be released on September 6, 2024.  Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Critics' Choice and Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Michaela Coel, Martin Freeman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The film is currently streaming in the Academy screening room and on Disney+.

White supremacy, the system which enabled the descendants of Europe to steal an outsized portion of this world's labor and land, has always been tied to a specious notion of beauty. What does it mean that Wakanda and Talokan give us a beauty created not to justify enslavement but to celebrate freedom? Ta-Nehisi Coates dives deep into the beautiful and complex portrayals of Shuri, Namor, Wakanda, and Talokan with actors Letitia Wright and Tenoch Huerta and cultural consultant Dr. Gerardo Aldana. (A HUGE thanks to Alyssa Surgent for writing the story and brainstorming the idea for this video! Check her out on Wattpad: https://www.wattpad.com/user/Kuramalover86)   «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»     You were begging Namor to take you to see Talokan, his kingdom under the ocean. After the two of you got to know one another while meeting in the cave he loved, you still wanted to see his city. “Please Namor? I promise not to tell anyone, just like I haven't so far. I just really, really want to see it. Please?” Namor looked to you as if doubting the seriousness of your request. “Well, you can't go down there in that.” He was referring to the shirt and capris you were wearing; not exactly swimming material. Then his tone got very serious as he continued, “Hypothermia will grip you almost instantaneously. Your blood will become toxic, and the pressure of the ocean will break every bone in your body.” It almost started to scare you until he spoke again. “Or you can wear a suit. We have some, come on.” He took your hand and led you to a cavern where there were several diving suits that were suited for submerging deep underwater. You both stepped into the water, Namor giving you a moment to adjust to the mobility of the diving suit in the water. “Stay close.” Namor reminded you before you closed the helmet and the two of you dove under the water. As you dove deeper in the suit to follow him, you could hear whale calls every so often, which didn't surprise you; you knew Talokan had to have whales as modes of transportation through the ocean. You looked in the suit at the many buttons and saw one for music. You pressed it and some calming music began to play as you followed Namor through the currents that took you in the direction of his city. After a few minutes of currents pulling you in different directions, you had arrived at the massive city of Talokan. You were stunned at the beauty of the city around you. Though it was deep in the dark of the ocean, the bioluminescence of plant life this deep still brought light to the surroundings. You swam through the city to see people breathing underwater going through their daily routine as if they lived on land. Some were playing a sort of sport like soccer which looked like fun. Then you passed through a market of sorts and everyone who saw Namor greeted him with the unique hand symbol they did. As you moved through the city, Namor showed you the building at the center of the city with a bright and brilliant light coming from it. It lit up the entire city. “Oh Namor, it's so beautiful. Is that also vibranium?” “Yes, in the depths of the ocean. I brought the sun to my people.” It made you cry at how beautiful it all appeared. Namor smiled and continued to lead you on a deeper tour of the city, the music and whale calls adding to paradise beneath the waves.

WAKANDA FOREVER! During an interview with TheWrap, Wakanda Forever producer Nate Moore discussed the legal issues standing in the way of Disney and Marvel Studios producing a Namor solo film. Like the Hulk, Namor is still controlled by Universal, and has essentially been "borrowed" by Marvel Studios. In the MCU, Namor can appear in team-up films and the like, but cannot star in a solo movie. Namor also cannot appear by himself in promotional material, with the only exception being for a character poster that's released as part of a larger series of posters.   MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS NEWS   Marvel Studios Develops Ideas on a 'Not-So-Secret' Retreat https://www.cbr.com/marvel-studios-secret-retreat-mcu/ Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore has pulled back the curtain of the company's creative process ever so slightly, dishing on an occasional retreat held for key personnel.   During an appearance on The Town podcast, the producer of films such as Black Panther and Captain America shared that the "not-so-secret retreat," held at Palm Springs "every year or two," is where top executives discuss ideas and aspirations for major films made by the studio. While studio boss Kevin Feige has discussed them previously, Moore has shed some new light over what goes on behind closed doors. "We just talk about interesting characters or stories we'd love to tell or,‘Hey, if we could do anything we wanted, what would it be? Who would it be? What characters haven't we used that we're passionate about?'" Moore explained.   The retreat typically leads to one or two major "tent poles" that are then further discussed. In fact, Moore revealed that the concept of the Multiverse and building Phase 1 around the Infinity Gauntlet were all products of ideation at the retreat. He also shared that working together on such massive ideas is made easier since they have "50+ years of material to pull from." Despite an "overwhelming" number of ideas that are shared at the retreat, the most passionate individuals work on bringing these ambitious projects to life.   Delving deeper into the workings of the retreat, Moore also highlighted how characters are created and the importance of an executive becoming an expert on a specific character once they're given the go-ahead. "For instance," Moore said, when I was put on Captain America 2, literally reading every appearance of Captain America in publishing. It takes about, I would say about 3 to 4 months." Creatives often have to go through archives of Marvel content after an idea is pitched at the retreat. During this process, they also begin building an "internal document" that makes note of the most compelling characters and their stories.   Moore shared the process of his research for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, explaining that it gave him the opportunity to encounter "characters that are really great, moments that are really great, cool facts that you maybe don't know off the surface or off a Wikipedia entry." This in-depth research is also crucial because it gives creatives a chance to filter out problematic content in the comics and tweak it for the big screen while simultaneously coming away with "a document that's a little bit indicative of what we think the movie could be." Once executives do their homework, the ideas are fleshed out and the pitch is then broken down and rebuilt and eventually translated into the blockbuster films that we watch onscreen.   Chris Hemsworth Explains Why He Hasn't Watched Tom Hiddleston's Loki https://www.cbr.com/chris-hemsworth-mcu-watchlist-not-up-to-date/ Actor Chris Hemsworth has played an integral role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor. The franchise star recently revealed, however, that he isn't quite up-to-date on all of the expansive franchise's films and Disney+ shows.   Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Hemsworth stated outright that he was unable to keep up with everything Marvel Studios has had to offer. He only recently caught an episode of the Loki series. When asked if he hadn't seen the entire show yet, the MCU star explained, "I've got three kids and… I'm off gallivanting around the place… No, I haven't watched anything. It's not because I don't want to. I just haven't had time."   Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3 trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3V5KDHRQvk   X-Men's James McAvoy Addresses Rumored MCU Return as Xavier https://www.cbr.com/x-men-james-mcavoy-return-secret-wars-responds/ Former X-Men star James McAvoy has debunked rumors that he will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Professor Charles Xavier.   In an interview with GQ, the actor stated that he had no desire to join the MCU even as his former X-Men co-stars join the franchise. "I'm very quick to say, 'No, I'm done.' Or 'I'm not that bothered about coming back.' Because you move forward," McAvoy said, who also addressed rumors that Marvel Studios had asked him to return for Avengers: Secret Wars. "I've definitely not got the call. And if I did I would definitely not be telling you."   OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [1:19:39]   We would love to hear back from you! Ao mesmo tempo, Wakanda, agora governada por Ramonda (Angela Bassett), está dividida entre se defender ou formar uma aliança com o reino subaquático de Talokan. Richtman, a proven source of reliable leaks, gave a simple, one-word reply: "Likely." This revelation should please fans of the original show. The former Daredevil series stands out from typical Marvel fare with its gritty, realistic depiction of violence and the physical and emotional toll being Daredevil puts on Matt Murdock, the man behind the mask. A TV-MA rating should allow the showrunners to push Daredevil: Born Again even further.   Daredevil's Deborah Ann Woll Still Hasn't Been Asked to Join Born Again https://www.cbr.com/daredevils-deborah-ann-woll-still-hasnt-been-asked-to-join-born-again/ Daredevil star Deborah Ann Woll has confirmed that she still hasn't been asked to feature in Daredevil: Born Again, a reboot of the Netflix show.   On an episode of the Inside of You podcast hosted by Michael Rosenbaum, Woll revealed that she hasn't received any calls from the makers of the Daredevil reboot. "So, as of now, I am not a part of it," the actor confirmed. Woll starred as Karen Page, Matt Murdock's secretary and love interest on the Netflix show that was canceled after three seasons. Woll shared that she would be "thrilled" to be on the show and felt like there was more for her character to explore. "They know where I am. Like I said, I love the character Karen Page. I love telling that story. But it is up to them what kind of story that they want to tell," she added. Karen Page was an integral part of all three seasons of Daredevil and played a significant role in Matt Murdock's life.   AGATHA: COVEN OF CHAOS: MORE STORY DETAILS REVEALED: EXCLUSIVE https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/11/17/agatha-coven-of-chaos-details/ Agatha: Coven of Chaos may be at least partially set in Westview, NJ -- the same town where WandaVision took place.   The story was broken by the Illuminerdi, who reported that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will return to Westview. According to the site, "The show seemingly picks up where WandaVision left off, as Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) will be freed from Wanda's spell, which imprisoned her in her Westview persona, Agnes. Most interestingly our sources stated that she is freed by a new Coven of Witches. Aubrey Plaza is one of them and according to some casting details it can be assumed that Ali Ahn is also part of them."   MCU – TIMELINE   Will the MCU Ever End? Marvel Studios VP Nate Moore Responds https://www.cbr.com/will-mcu-end-marvel-studios-vp-nate-moore/ Marvel Studios' Vice President of Production and Development Nate Moore doesn't see the Marvel Cinematic Universe ending any time soon.   Speaking on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, Moore believes that the franchise can continue on for "a long time," insisting that the creative teams behind the MCU still have plenty of stories to tell. "To me, Marvel movies are just movies," said the filmmaker. "Our source material is just… It'd be like saying, 'Hey, are movies about books gonna go on forever?' Probably." Despite this confidence, Moore elaborated by emphasizing that Marvel Studios can't rest easy with the established formula. "I think we have to continue to… We can't sit back on our laurels. We can't think we have the answers. We have to continue to push the envelope as far as genre and what we're willing to explore."   OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [1:11:54]   Join Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. next time as the Agents discuss the Marvel Studios 2022 film Thor Love And Thunder. We are going to dive deep into the depths of Talokan to tell what we thought of this film so stop here and go watch it if you haven't!! In what was no doubt going to be an emotional roller coaster since the passing of the late, great King Chadwick Boseman, we were left with a question. What would a Black Panther sequel be without T'Challa? Ryan Coogler proves complete mastery over storytelling as we see the passing of one King and the rise of another. Much of the original magnificent cast returns in addition to some new heavy hitters. Mainly the man himself Tenoch Huerta as NAMOR aka Ku'Kulcan maybe aka The Sub-Mariner? We shall see! We have a lot to say about this film so grab some beer from the motherland and join us as we prepare to wage war on the surface world! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jafnpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jafnpodcast/support

Since 2018 when Black Panther, the first film by director Ryan Coogler about the king and protector of Wakanda - a fictional sovereign nation in Africa - premiered, fans around the world were excited to see what the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever would be about, and we were not disappointed. LaNeysha and I were joined by our friend, and fellow podcaster and film critic Kate Sánchez, to chat about everything that we loved, and didn't quite love about this new enter into the MCU.Not only were audiences treated to seeing some of their favorite characters like Okoye (Danai Gurira), M'Baku (Wintson Duke), and the regal Queen Ramonda portrayed by the one and only Angela Basset once again, we were introduced to Namor - played brilliantly by Indigenous Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta Mejía -, the leader of Talokan, a nation of Mayan Mesoamerican people, who like Wakanda had been living hundreds of years, away from the colonialist eyes and threat of Western imperialism. But unlike Wakanda, the Talokan are all too familiar with the destructive presence of colonialism and slavery, which plays a major part in their story, and the film's plot.Though we were all excited to see just how Ryan, co-writer Joe Robert Cole, costume designer Ruth Carter, production designer Hannah Beachler, and the production teams came together to craft this visually stunning story, there's no denying that many were apprehensive about how the grief over the loss of actor Chadwick Boseman would be portrayed on screen. Having played T'Challa for a number of years since his introduction into the MCU, Chadwick has been viewed as thee T'Challa, and having as prolific and impactful career as he did, his lost was felt acutely by the cast, crew and fans in the Black diaspora. With this seemingly impossible task Ryan Coogler created a film that is both beautiful and incredibly poignant. In this first episode of out special Wakanda Forever, recap, we share how we related to all these aspects of the film, what they mean to us personally, and how somethings in the film don't quite work narratively, or technically with regards to some of the acting. You can follow myself, LaNeysha, and Kate on social media at: @CarrieCnh12, @NeyshaPlays, and @OhMyMithrandir Hosted on Acast. Lots of questions about Namor and the Talokanil are answered in this podcast about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We also talk about mutants, Ironheart, Midnight Angels, Val & Ross, as well as the mid-credits scene. Show notes… Namor: In the comics, he rules Atlantis. In the movie, it's much different. He is the ruler of Talokan and the Talokanil. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Namor_McKenzie_(Earth-616) Namora: Namor's cousin! The movie doesn't make the relationship clear, and she doesn't have the powers that she does in the comics. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Aquaria_Neptunia_(Earth-616) Riri: IRON HEART! She's new to the MCU but she's been around in the comics for about 8 years, which is new for the comics. Lots of story potential with her, and she has connections to the Ten Rings. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Riri_Williams_(Earth-616) Aneka: In the comics. It's actually a pretty cool story. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Aneka_(Earth-616) Midnight Angels: Not a lot to it. It's special Wakandan battle armor used in the Doomwar. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Midnight_Angel_Armor Everett Ross: We've talked about him before, and he has a long history of working with the Wakandans. Pretty good movie to comic translation here. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Everett_Ross_(Earth-616) Val: A different character in the comics than the movies, but you should expect some nasty things to come from her, especially with the Thunderbolts movie coming up. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Valentina_Allegra_de_Fontaine_(Earth-616) News you can abuse! On this week's podcast, "Marvel normie" Stephen Garrett is honored to join host Neal Pollack, a Marvel completist. Neal gives Stephen all the backstory of 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,' especially when it comes to Prince Namor, formerly of Atlantis, now of Talokan. Neal found Wakanda Forever an emotional sendoff for Chadwick Boseman, but was disappointed by the poorly-developed, visually murky underseas scenes. Stephen marvels at how the movie is full of strong Black heroines. And then he and Neal have to pick themselves off the floor after over-admiring Lupita N'yongo, who is in this movie, looking fine.Matthew Ehrlich checks in to discuss Season 2 of 'The White Lotus.' Matthew has lots of problems with this show, but he still finds himself tuning in eagerly on Sunday nights. Neal loves 'The White Lotus,' he thinks it's sexy and juicy and fabulous, qualities not always apparent in TV shows. And they both agree that Jennifer Coolidge is a comic masterpiece who must be protected at all costs. Finally, Danny Gallagher visits the show to discuss 'Weird,' the Weird Al Yankovic biopic. What could be more appealing than listening to two Gen-X guys talk about why Weird Al is awesome and funny? Nothing, we say! We have the courage to like Weird Al here at BFG.
