Ruth E. Carter is a two-time academy award-winning costume designer whose creativity and talent have left an incredible mark in the film industry. From the African-inspired designs of “Black Panther” to the symbolism behind the costumes in “Malcolm X,” each piece is a testament to Carter's skill at blending history, culture, and storytelling.During an exhibition of her costumes at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, she said, “It's amazing to me because each one is a different time in my life, and now they're all here together.”Carter's journey to success started when she auditioned for an acting role but didn't get the part. She was asked to design the costumes instead, and her passion grew. “Quickly, I realized that I could play all the characters, not just one. That I was able to do a character discovery, a deep dive into the intricoes of each of the characters and bring the characters to life amongst all of them.”“Each one of these pieces here, they represent some passion that I had. I made lots of decisions on each one of these costumes.”As Carter sees it, making costumes became a new way of exploring art, photography, textures and design. “I can recreate this in a medium that tells the story of them. I see their story, I see behind their eyes and who they are, and it just fascinates me.”Her work is featured in many popular TV shows and films including, “Coming to America,” “Selma,” “Roots,” “Rosewood,” and “Wakanda Forever.” Carter came to Indianapolis during the past weekend for the debut of her exhibition at the Children's Museum and for a panel discussion at the Madam Walker Legacy Center. For young women or people of color who aspire to Carter's career, she says, it's important to know that it's a passion career and not always glamorous, but it's key to be excited about one's own individual path. “You have to be a student of your passion and you have to stay the course. You learn so much even from your mistakes. There is no such thing as a mistake. It is sometimes difficult, but that just means you have to push yourself.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Marvel's 2018 film Black Panther not only broke box office records, it also changed perceptions of Black superheroes and African culture. As the first film to feature a Black superhero, the film's director and writers wasted zero time taking up space in an industry that traditionally lacks BIPOC representation. Joining the team was Ruth E. Carter, whose skill in blending African-American history and contemporary culture through fashion, combined with her determination to showcase Black excellence, won an Academy Award in 2019.rnrnrnNow through April 6th, Clevelanders will have the opportunity to be up close to the outfits created by Carter, in conjunction with the Cleveland Orchestra's performance of Ludwig G?ransson's Oscar-winning score from Black Panther on March 28-29. It is a rare opportunity to see what it looks like when communities can tell their own stories through their creativity, and shift narratives for lasting change.

Hey! If you enjoyed our review of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, then we have a special treat for you. Today, we're sharing an episode from the Webby Award-winning podcast American Masters: Creative Spark, produced by our friends over at PBS.  In this compelling episode from American Masters' podcast, host Joe Skinner sits down with one of the definitive artists of Black cinema: costume designer Ruth E. Carter. This interview was recorded just *minutes* after Ruth got word of her 2023 Oscar nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. And remember, she's already received an Oscar and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, working on iconic films like Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and (of course) both Black Panther movies.  Within this episode, Ruth takes us through the beginning of her career, how she started work on Marvel movies, the Afrofuturist approach (and hidden meanings!) she took when imagining Wakandan dress, and more.  Without sharing any other spoilers, here's the episode… Learn more about your ad choices. There is more than one queen that reigns over Wakanda. That queen is costume designer Ruth Carter, a 4-time Academy Award nominee (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Black Panther, Amistad and Malcolm X), and winner for 2018's Black Panther. She is also an Emmy nominee for Roots, a 3-time Costume Designers Guild Award winner (Coming 2 America, Black Panther, Career Achievement Award), a 3-time Critics' Choice Award winner (Black Panther, Dolemite Is My Name, Black Panther: Wakenda Forever), and so much more.  Carter is responsible for the iconic outfits that Marvel favorites like Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) wear. She was also tasked with creating the outfits for the newly-introduced world of Talokan, like Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and Namora (Mabel Cadena). Carter continues to raise the bar higher and higher, not only for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for any individual in the profession. In result, Carter was honored with her fourth individual Academy Award nomination for the film, where the film itself garnered five nominations (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects). When asked about The Hollywood Reporter article that was penned by The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood around omissions of Black women for Academy Award nominations, Carter responded, “It's not myopic representation. It's global and I find representation in Bardo. I find representation in Everything Everywhere All At Once. I find representation in Pinocchio. I find representation in Camille Friend, in Angela Bassett, in myself, in Ludwig Göransson. There is a lack of representation of black voices and black images, and for that, I feel sad. Women directors, for that, I feel very sad. I do hail the efforts of those who have films that do speak to the Black community and such. I cannot turn my back on that type of representation as well this year.”  We will find out the winners of the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12.   What's next for Ms. Carter? She will continue to stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by designing for the reboot of Blade. While tight lipped, she did reveal that, “Mahershala [Ali] has been training for weeks… months. I think we are going to see another Mahershala that I haven't seen yet because he is dedicated.” Blade will be directed by Yann Demange and will be released on September 6, 2024.  Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Critics' Choice and Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Michaela Coel, Martin Freeman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The film is currently streaming in the Academy screening room and on Disney+.

"What [director Jake Schreier] wants to do with Florence's character is very interesting and how I factor into how we develop our relationship is very interesting," he said. Their troubled father-daughter dynamic was teased in Black Widow, but Harbour hints that it will be explored even further in "this movie that's, you know, kind of ragtag."   ‘Wakanda Forever' Costume Designer Ruth Carter on Film's New Water Sets: ‘I Had to Weigh Costumes Down so They Wouldn't Float' https://variety.com/2022/artisans/awards/wakanda-forever-black-panther-costume-design-production-design-cinematography-ruth-carter-1235429898/ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever costume designer Ruth E. Carter and production designer Hannah Beachler revealed that the film's costumes required weights for its underwater scenes.   In an interview with Variety, Carter shared that since a good portion of the film takes place in the undersea city of Talokan, the crew had to test how the costumes they designed interacted with the water. Weights were eventually added to the outfits to ensure they looked as intended under the ocean. "For the water scenes, we had a 20-foot tank in which we did tests," Carter said. "Divers went down in the water and I had to put them in costumes that included headdresses and capes, just to see what those costumes would do in water, and I ended up putting weights in."   Captain America 4 Starts Shooting in Spring 2023 https://www.cbr.com/captain-america-4-spring-2023-shoot/ Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Nate Moore recently revealed that Captain America: New World Order will start shooting in Spring 2023.   Moore discussed the upcoming sequel in an interview with Collider, confirming that it will be his next Marvel Studios project following the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Richtman, a proven source of reliable leaks, gave a simple, one-word reply: "Likely." This revelation should please fans of the original show. The former Daredevil series stands out from typical Marvel fare with its gritty, realistic depiction of violence and the physical and emotional toll being Daredevil puts on Matt Murdock, the man behind the mask. A TV-MA rating should allow the showrunners to push Daredevil: Born Again even further.   Daredevil's Deborah Ann Woll Still Hasn't Been Asked to Join Born Again https://www.cbr.com/daredevils-deborah-ann-woll-still-hasnt-been-asked-to-join-born-again/ Daredevil star Deborah Ann Woll has confirmed that she still hasn't been asked to feature in Daredevil: Born Again, a reboot of the Netflix show.   On an episode of the Inside of You podcast hosted by Michael Rosenbaum, Woll revealed that she hasn't received any calls from the makers of the Daredevil reboot. "So, as of now, I am not a part of it," the actor confirmed. Woll starred as Karen Page, Matt Murdock's secretary and love interest on the Netflix show that was canceled after three seasons. Woll shared that she would be "thrilled" to be on the show and felt like there was more for her character to explore. "They know where I am. Like I said, I love the character Karen Page. I love telling that story. But it is up to them what kind of story that they want to tell," she added. Karen Page was an integral part of all three seasons of Daredevil and played a significant role in Matt Murdock's life.   AGATHA: COVEN OF CHAOS: MORE STORY DETAILS REVEALED: EXCLUSIVE https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/11/17/agatha-coven-of-chaos-details/ Agatha: Coven of Chaos may be at least partially set in Westview, NJ -- the same town where WandaVision took place.   The story was broken by the Illuminerdi, who reported that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will return to Westview. According to the site, "The show seemingly picks up where WandaVision left off, as Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) will be freed from Wanda's spell, which imprisoned her in her Westview persona, Agnes. Most interestingly our sources stated that she is freed by a new Coven of Witches. Aubrey Plaza is one of them and according to some casting details it can be assumed that Ali Ahn is also part of them."   MCU – TIMELINE   Will the MCU Ever End? Marvel Studios VP Nate Moore Responds https://www.cbr.com/will-mcu-end-marvel-studios-vp-nate-moore/ Marvel Studios' Vice President of Production and Development Nate Moore doesn't see the Marvel Cinematic Universe ending any time soon.   Speaking on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, Moore believes that the franchise can continue on for "a long time," insisting that the creative teams behind the MCU still have plenty of stories to tell. "To me, Marvel movies are just movies," said the filmmaker. "Our source material is just… It'd be like saying, 'Hey, are movies about books gonna go on forever?' Probably." Despite this confidence, Moore elaborated by emphasizing that Marvel Studios can't rest easy with the established formula. "I think we have to continue to… We can't sit back on our laurels. She is so much more than a costume designer or expert storyteller. She is a trailblazer. A pioneer. A leader. Think Ryan Coogler's Black Panther. Spike Lee's Malcolm X, Do The Right Thing or 12 other Spike Lee joints. Ava DuVernay's Selma. Lee Daniels' The Butler. Steven Spielberg's Amistad. Coming 2 America… and so much more. But who is the woman behind the accolades? What makes her tick? What gives her life? And what drove her to become the first African American to win an Academy Award in Costume Design? And furthermore, how has it changed her? Here's to diving deeper into the life and mind of the modern iconoclast… Ruth E. Carter.CREDITS:Guest:  Ruth E.
