When the Hart-Celler Act passed in 1965, opening up U.S. immigration to non-Europeans, it ushered in a whole new era. But even to the first generation of Asian Americans born in the United States after that milestone, it would have been impossible to imagine that sushi and boba would one day be beloved by millions, that a Korean boy band named BTS would be the biggest musical act in the world, that one of the most acclaimed and popular movies of 2018 would be Crazy Rich Asians, or that we would have an Asian American vice president. And that's not even mentioning the creators, performers, entrepreneurs, execs and influencers who've been making all this happen, behind the scenes and on the screen; or the activists and representatives continuing to fight for equity, building coalitions and defiantly holding space for our voices and concerns. And still: Asian America is just getting started. Join us for a special program featuring the talented authors of Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now. The timing is great for this intimate, eye-opening and frequently hilarious guided tour through the pop-cultural touchstones and sociopolitical shifts of the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and beyond. Jeff Yang, Phil Yu and Philip Wang chronicle how we arrived at today's unprecedented diversity of Asian American cultural representation through engaging, interactive infographics (including a step-by-step guide to a night out in K-Town, an atlas that unearths historic Asian American landmarks, a handy “Appreciation or Appropriation?” flowchart, and visual celebrations of both our "founding fathers and mothers" and the nostalgia-inducing personalities of each decade), plus illustrations and graphic essays from major AAPI artists, exclusive roundtables with Asian American cultural icons, and more, anchored by extended insider narratives of each decade by the three co-authors. They provide an informative, lively and inclusive celebration of shared experiences and singular moments, and all the different ways in which we have chosen to come together. This one goes out to the Asian diaspora Gen X, millennial & Gen Z-ers who are getting better acquainted with or just further embracing tf out of their Asian identities. For most of us Asian Americans, we grew up assimilating, disconnecting, and/or over-representing this side of ourselves - our languages, customs, features - in a society where we were mostly stereotyped, fetishized, or simply overlooked and ignored. But throughout the many decades since our parents and grandparents immigrated from our motherlands, we've created spaces, trends, and our own subcultures that have blossomed into a unique and increasingly stronger identity. In this episode, Minji sits down with two Asian American trailblazers who have contributed their life's work to carving out a space for our stories - writers & public figures Jeff Yang and Phil Yu (aka AngryAsianMan). Together they discuss their new book RISE, co-authored with Phil Wang of WongFu Productions, which covers some highlights in the evolution of Asian American pop culture. They dive into how times have changed, the significance of challenging the status quo, and the importance of a supportive, unified community to address bigotry, hate, and ignorance. Links: Spotify - Featured Music Playlisthttps://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/feb/15/wsj-shoes-on-shoeless-house-essayFollow Minji on:Instagram (@minjeezy)Instagram (@firstofallpod)Follow our guests Phil Yu (AngryAsianMan) and Jeff Yang on: Phil Yu Instagram: @angryasianmanJeff Yang Instagram: @originalspinRISE book Instagram: @RISEAAbook ▫️ Music featured in this episode include "Uzutrap" by Uzuhan and “This Is A Song About Self Love” by DANakaDAN.  Check out his new album "Me. Phil started his titular site nearly 20 years ago and since then, it has become an indispensable news resource about Asian American culture, politics and related issues. Phil, along with Jeff Yang, also hosts his own Asian American culture podcast, They Call Us Bruce. Phil wanted to revisit one of the big hit albums of his youth: II by Boyz II Men. By '94, the group was already one of the biggest acts in all of R&B and expectations were beyond high for the follow-up. The quartet of crooners from Philly didn't disappoint as II continued the group's reign at the top, especially thanks to smooth ballads like "Water Runs Dry," "On Bended Knee" and of course, "I'll Make Love To You." We would love to introduce the talented, creative and unique talent, Michael Tow from TRIBECA and AT&T Award winning film, “Lucky Grandma,” which is set tot make it's debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in late April/early May. Michael, who plays the role of, “Little Handsome,” is a low level gang member, hit man who doesn't feel pain or has any remorse in trying to chase, track down and capture “lucky grandma.” Michael classifies his role in this film, along with his colleague (“gang member”) the “Marv and Harry” from the hit film, “Home Alone,” so they aren't the smartest hit men in the world. This comedy, drama film is set to make its mark at the Tribeca Film Festival this year. Besides starring in this TRIBECA film, Michael has been in the entertainment industry for quite some time, you may recognize I'm from projects like, BLINDSPOT on NBC, where he plays the character of Del Toro, a ruthless, hacker for hire who is hired by Madeline Burke. Del Toro was hired to hack into and take down a plane. He has been the center of the story line spanning for over 6 episodes this past season. Michaels other credits include films, Slender Man, The Sea of Trees, R.I.P.D. to just name a few and some Television that include, DareDevil, Royal Pain, MacGyvr, etc. With the the asian culture making waves in the industry, Michael is someone to watch out for…. In a partnership with AT&T, The Tribeca Film Festival, held its second annual, "Untold Stores" program, where many directors, producers and writers pitch their scripts to a panel for a chance to win $1 million dollars towards their film, with a year to make it come to life. Some of the panel consisted of directors, writers and producers from, Dallas Buyers Club, Birdman, Precious, Broad City, to just name a few. The award and funds went to the script/creators of, Lucky Grandma, Sasie Sealy and Angela Cheng. Lucky Grandma is about an ornery Chinese grandmother living n NYC's Chinatown with a small-time gambling habit. Being really down on her luck, the grandma learns from a fortune teller that “a most auspicious day” is on the horizon. The grandmother takes fate and it turns out to be a a chase of a lifetime and lands on the wrong side of the tracks, in the middle of a Chinese gang war. The creators took their own featured home videos and clips of their Chinese mothers to explain the concepts, they say its a homage of amazing women, but explain that grandmas of this decent (American and Chinese) are relatable and so specific. Michael also owns his own production company called, Tow Arboleda Films, who are AWARD WINNING filmmakers. Last year, Michael and his co-producing partner won 2 Telly Award for their shorts film, Christmas Forward. His production company started 2 years ago making social justice short films and videos (14 films/videos to date) usually responding to or parodying Asian American events in the news. Their first video, the Mannequin Challenge video Awoke, was named won of the top Asian American videos in 2017 by popular blogger Angry Asian Man. They have been seen by over 5 million people across the world and are currently making a feature length documentary movie on Chinese American comedian talk show host , Joe Wong. In his spare time he loves to spend time with his family, living in Boston and New York City, Michael also finds time to play hockey, one of his other passions. I’ve had the awesome opportunity to interview Jenn Fang of Reappropriate, known as “one of the oldest AAPI feminist and racial activist blogs” on the Net, on Project Voice right before our official rebranding launch! Active for almost 20 years as a blogger, Jenn will speak on how much the online Asian activist community has grown and changed since she started. Along with that, Jenn will share her thoughts in support of the validity and necessity of the Asian American feminist movement. As someone who understands how becoming a voice for the Asian diasporic community can lead to expectations she’s expected to meet because of the role that others see her in, I’ve asked her to also address her critics’ feedback in regards to her beliefs and work under @reappropriate. I highly encourage you to tune in to hear what Jenn Fang has to say on what it means to be an Asian American activist and feminist who is open to learning and growing. Our interview will include topics that range from fighting Internet bullying - a subject hat Jenn and I both feel super passionate addressing - to forming alliances with other POC communities and fighting anti-Blackness within the Asian community, and finally, to exploring what it means to practice radical love in this world that often forgets that conversations and change don’t just take place online but in the real world as well. All I have to say is this: since following Reappropriate, I’ve felt a lot more knowledgeable and convicted with my beliefs as a self-identified, proud Asian American feminist. Jenn Fang is the founder of Reappropriate.co, one of the web’s oldest and most popular blogs dedicated to Asian American and Pacific Islander feminism, pop culture, and politics. Her writing has been featured in several outlets including Quartz, BlogHer, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress, Asian Americans for Obama, Angry Asian Man, and Northwest Asian Weekly. Jenn is also co-curator of AAPI Rewind, a weekly digest of AAPI news and commentary. Follow Jenn at @reappropriate on Twitter and Facebook or her blog at reappropriate.co! “The medicine for my suffering I had within me from the very beginning but I did not take it. My ailment came from within myself, but I did not observe it until this moment. Now I see I will never find the light unless, like a candle, I am my own fuel.” This quote is very close to Shannon’s heart. When her brother Brandon unexpectedly died in 1993 on the set of the Crow, Shannon was overwhelmed with intense pain and grief. It was on her journey to find healing from her grief that she started to delve into her father’s writings for the first time and she found this quote. Bruce’s words helped his daughter find space to heal and process Brandon’s death. Shannon is motivated to share her father’s writings and quotes because his words personally helped her get through the toughest time of her life. After discovering her father’s writings, Shannon experienced her own #BruceLeeMoment of self-awareness and the call to be on a path of self-actualization. She quit acting and decided to dedicate her life to spreading her father’s wisdom and legacy. We also talk about Kung-fu: the acquisition of skill through hard work. You can have kung-fu in anything, whatever you’ve developed mastery in. We often ask our team and visitors: what is your Kung-fu? Three layers of awareness: - Awareness of self - Awareness of in-between - Awareness of the world Take Action: Start with noticing where you are struggling in your life; it might be something big or small. Decide to move in a positive direction and seek the tools that are out there that will help you have constructive motion. We recommend journaling to help you take action with your struggle. If you would like to share your moment of taking action, we would love to hear from you! Share via social media @BruceLee or by email at hello@brucelee.com #AAHA (Awesome Asians and Hapas) This week’s #AAHA shout out goes to Phil Yu, also known as Angry Asian Man, a Korean American blogger and content creator. He started off with just his blog, highlighting things out in the world that he had issue with or he felt needed more discussion. Now he has won numerous awards, has a podcast and youtube talkshow, and sits on the board of Visual Communications that produces the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival. Phil has given a voice to his own culture and his own identity, and we think that’s awesome! #BruceLeeMoment This week’s #BruceLeeMoment comes to us via email from Justin Lewis: Hello Shannon and Sharon, My #BruceLeeMoment happened to me at 18. My parents were great at making their kids feel comfortable when we were growing up, but I knew for a while that there were some problems with my parents’ relationship. Finally they got divorced and it spun me off into this world I didn’t know and made me very uncomfortable with my surroundings. I was angry for a while and had no problem whatsoever letting my feelings be known. Being a young man, I was faced for the first time to try to cope with something outside my comfort zone. It was here that I rediscovered a documentary. Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey. Now I’ve seen this doc before, but when Bruce was going against the Escrima master with the bamboo stick, something stuck with me. The whole speech about “the willingness to adapt to broken rhythm” spoke to me and from then on, I was able to start to adapt to my surroundings, and try to be more fluid with life. Now I’m moving on to the next #BruceLeeMoment in my life, as I pursue my career in writing for film and comic books. After listening to your podcast about Taking Action, I realize that it is now or never. I learned how it was to be reactive, but now let’s see what happens when I become active. Thanks, and keep up the good work two! Forever flowing, Justin “Lou” Lewis Share your #AAHA and #BruceLeeMoment recommendations with us via social media @BruceLee or email us at hello@brucelee.com

In the aftermath of the 2016 Academy Awards, we call on the insight of the Angry Asian Man himself, Phil Yu, along with Dis/oritet/ed Comedy co-founder Atsuko Okatsuka, to talk diversity and help us make sense of what we all saw. Together we talk about the bad dated jokes and ask ourselves why the Asian community seems to be all but invisible in the celebration of media. We also chat about the phenomenon of Trump,  reflect on the "Obama Effect", and do some soul-searching about age and wisdom.
