This week's episode features an archival conversation from about four years ago during the pandemic with J. Brown, host of the Yoga Talks podcast. J. Brown has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and is widely known as a writer and industry-leading podcaster. His signature offering is a deeply breath-centered, therapeutic yoga practice inspired by the TKV Desikachar tradition, aimed at fostering well-being and reducing pain. J. Brown's journey into yoga began as a way to process his mother's death, seeking freedom from the grief and disillusionment that accompanied it. Starting with Ashtanga and Iyengar styles, J. eventually found his way to a therapeutic approach through the teachings of Swami P. Saraswati and the Krishnamacharya tradition. He teaches that yoga is not a linear progression but a practice of learning how to care for oneself. In this conversation, we explore the evolving dynamics of yoga practice and the teacher-student relationship. The discussion covers themes such as balancing devotion and discernment, the challenges of navigating modern spirituality, and common misconceptions about awakening. It highlights the importance of aligning one's practice, goals, and philosophical view to bring clarity to the spiritual path, offering valuable insights into the role of teachers and the transformative power of yoga.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. It was Alison who helped introduce Derek to the infinite potential that yoga offers for developing agency and awareness in navigating the deep challenges with our twisted, asymmetrical, and complex bodies and tapping into the mind-body connection. Alison West, Ph.D, E-RYT, C-IAYT is director of Yoga Union and the Yoga Union Backcare & Scoliosis Center, and has been teaching yoga for over thirty years. On this episode of the Woman Power Zone Podcast Ariel is joined by reiki master, yoga and meditation teacher, Kristen Fewel, to talk about the power of meditation, some different aspects of meditation and where to get started. KEY TAKEAWAYS I came to meditation out of necessity. I was in a really hard place for a really long time. I started with yoga classes and energy work. The best advice I ever got at that time was: “Kristen, you're going to need to learn yoga, learn how to manage your energy and not give it away all the time to anyone, and you're going to need to learn and practice reiki. If you can make those things a part of your life you're going to be OK, you're going to make it, you're going to be better than OK.” It's about reflecting on what thoughts are coming in, or just accepting that you had a thought and then being willing to let it go and see what arises, feel it coming into your field of awareness and then letting that go. With practice it becomes more reflective so that you recognise your habits and patterns, what is your mind doing while you're sitting, lying, walking, doing a thing. Are you able to do the thing that you set out to do? Which for me was just sitting, it's the most complicated part of meditation – sitting still – rather than focussing on doing an activity. You have to establish your sitting posture so you're comfortable in your body while you're sitting. That's where yoga comes in. We've discovered in our group that we have shared meditation experiences. We do dialogue a little bit after our session to find out if anything interesting comes up, and sometimes images or spiritual guidance will come into the room and are shared by 1, 2, or 3 people. It's really remarkable and powerful. I find that private lessons with an experienced teacher is the best way of getting on the right track with meditation rather than having to come in contact with all of the many obstacles which will come up, and there are many. You can get past those hurdles fairly quickly and have successful meditation if you have an experienced teacher. A group class isn't as fine tuned to the individual, but it will still give you something. BEST MOMENTS“Meditation doesn't happen the first time you sit down and do it. It doesn't even happen the tenth or the fiftieth time, but if you stay with it you feel your feelings, you get through the hardest part, and then it opens up to you.”“We're working on attracting more people who want to try to extend their sitting time to 45-60 minutes because that's when really profound things and major shifts start to occur.”“I'm a participant just like everybody else, I'm working through my stuff just like everybody else, I do the practice.”“If you're not ready for meditation, perhaps you'd like to explore aspects of mindfulness, which are different. Mindfulness is noticing what's going on in the moment but not necessarily with reflection on it.” ABOUT THE GUEST Kristen Fewel is a seasoned teacher with more than two decades of yoga practice and study. She uses an adaptable breath-centred approach inspired by the teachings of TKV Desikachar and Krishnamacharya to guide students toward breathing and being with depth and ease. Kristen's teaching points to the importance of mindfulness and meditation as a way to enjoy life more, and as a path to discover your true potential. Kristen spends most of her time with individuals doing yoga therapy or reiki energy work at Full Circle. Michael Hutchinson has been studying the breath in the KYM tradition for over 4 decades both experientially and scientifically. He has recently written a new book called Breath for Health, using the main tenants of the teachings from TKV Desikachar, to express how to breathe simply and effectively. Amy interviews Michael and discovers that he offers a rare glimpse into how we can use breath for as little as 10-minutes per day and it will change our lives. Michael knows this because he has felt the impact of simple breath techniques within himself for decades, taught others and observed how different breathing techniques impact the human system, and read the research on respiratory physiology. In the end, he shows us how the simple breathing techniques taught be Desikachar are shown to be effective for health, healing and beyond. · Michael is a thoughtful and introspective human being that thinks, feels and speaks with subtle awareness and clarity· Michael defines what optimal breathing looks like and feels like· Michael shows how he uses techniques such as bhavana (thinking- feeling and imagining) to help people breath more comfortably and efficiently· He talks about how we can use breath to create more space in our mind and heart· He explains how even a short breathing practice every day can change the trajectory of one's life· He discusses how the unconscious observation of breathing patterns within families can be transferred from parent to child· Yoga Sutra 2.34 and the importance of ahimsa or non-violenceIf you would like to receive the free infographics and handouts that correspond to each episode on the Yoga Therapy Hour Podcast, please subscribe to our segmented email list. Withdrawal of the Senses.Returning to Yoga-8, the limbs of practice, E61 is all about Pratyahara (the fifth limb) withdrawal of the senses. Even after decades of study, practice, and teaching, there are aspects of Yoga that are a constant curiosity, Pratyahara is one of them.Sherry & Theresa decided to go on a field trip before tackling this notion of sense withdrawal and went floating. That's right, floating. Floating is akin to what we used to refer to as a, “sensory deprivation tank.” That was the expectation, total sensory deprivation. While the hosts did not withdraw from all their senses, they talk a bit about how the focus of floating in darkness that is the same with eyes open as closed, had an influence on their sensory experience that opened doors to understanding Pratyahara in a new way.Floating offered a new language with which to offer clarity (or at least an alternate road to clarity). This episode touches on what Pratyahara is, how it can be practiced in the modern world, and benefits of practice. Pratyahara is the 5th of 8 limbs and is the first of the more contemplative practices. Talking about Pratyahara brought up other subtle body anatomy maps (chakras, koshas, and more) which curiously overlay each other in symbiotic ways.Pratyahara asks us to notice what we notice. This conversation covers some of the basics, but if you wish to understand Pratyahara (or any of these limbs) in a more scholarly way, absolutely find a teacher with whom you can do the deeper dives. On today's episode, Amy chats with Ashley McKeachie. Ashley is a registered yoga instructor, yoga educator, and yoga therapist. She graduated with her Masters Degree in Yoga Studies from Loyola Marymount University. Ashley spends half her time working as a yoga therapist, where she uses the tools of yoga to help alleviate the symptoms associated with chronic pain, and the other half as part-time faculty at Orange Coast College, leading and facilitating their Yoga Instructor Training Program and teaching about Integrative Health Coaching. Amy and Ashley talk about the importance of being a part of a positive Sangha, or community, for self-regulation and self-actualization. "Authentic yoga is about having the personal means to actually participate in the reality of life in body, breath and relationship. These means are easily learned and applied without any struggle." - Mark Whitwell Mark Whitwell has worked as one of the OG yoga teachers around the world for the last 45 years and is the author of four books on the topic of yoga. I am so grateful to have caught Mark on a brief layover in Singapore, where our conversation really became a healing vessel for me during a particularly difficult time. He reminds me that I am the cosmos, and that I am ultimately enough. His authentic approach to yoga stems from his teachings under the "Father of Yoga" T. Krishnamacharya, and his son TKV Desikachar, of which he helped write a book called The Heart of Yoga. I was going through a big change during the recording of this episode and became quite emotional in some parts. I am grateful for Mark for offering a safe container to hold my vulnerability. Mark's teachings clarify the profound passion and relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 243: What Yoga Texts Should I Read? with Chase Bossart Description: Many yoga teachers are eager learners and always seeking to expand their knowledge about yoga. However the multitude of texts (and their various translations) available can feel overwhelming and daunting to approach. In this episode, Chase Bossart shares his recommendations and expertise around some of the must-read yoga texts. Chase Bossart is the Director of the Yoga Well Institute, an organization dedicated to yoga, meditation, and holistic health in the tradition of Viniyoga. Chase studied under the tutelage of TKV Desikachar, son of Krishnamacharya who is often described as the father of modern yoga. Chase shares his insights on how to take the yoga sutras into challenging times, the three fundamental texts he suggests yoga teachers read, and why these are so important for yoga teachers as a foundation in their practice and their teaching. Chase also explains why having a teacher to guide you in your study of the texts can be helpful, and whether yoga teachers need to know Sanskrit and all of the texts to practice or teach yoga. Shannon and Chase also discuss cultural appropriation, how and why yoga has changed so much in its practice in the East vs. West, and much more. If you have ever wondered what texts you should read to deepen your knowledge of yoga and yoga philosophy, or how the teachings of yoga apply to our daily lives, this episode is for you. Key Takeaways: [4:25] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Chase Bossart. [6:37] Shannon gives a shoutout to Schedulicity. [7:47] Shannon reads a review from a listener. [11:25] This interview was recorded on the 20th of January, Inauguration Day in the US. Shannon and Chase discuss the state of things in the US at the moment. [13:03] How have the yoga sutras held Chase through the challenges we have faced recently? [19:20] What are the main texts that Chase recommends that yoga teachers read? [22:14] Chase explains a little more about the Yogasūtra, and Haṭhayoga Pradīpika. [25:26] These texts are not easy to read or understand. Chase talks about the traditional way that people would go about learning these texts. [28:40] Not everyone can live with and learn these texts under the tutelage of a teacher. What can they do instead? [34:12] Chase shares his recommendations on how yoga teachers can approach these texts. [37:37] Does studying with one teacher mean that we are automatically limiting ourselves to just one person's ideas? [39:08] Chase shares more about the three texts he recommends for yoga teachers. [46:09] Context is not well understood in yoga. [47:33] What is Chase's reaction to someone who just wants to practice yoga and believes that yoga's teachings will come through to them in their practice, without reading the texts? [53:53] What are Chase's thoughts on bringing yoga from the East to the West? Shannon and Chase discuss the topic of cultural appropriation in yoga. "Yoga, like cooking, is experiential knowledge. Like music or dance. It's not just something that you know, it's something you do." "It's important to build a foundation before we add lots of stories." "Another part of difficulty in yoga is that context is not well understood." "We should be, at least, having a fundamental idea of what is yoga as a practice and as a life philosophy, rather than just what is yoga as an exercise class or some huff and puff."

Sriram is my Gurubhai – brothers of the same teacher. He is particularly interesting to me in that he is indigenous to South India, born into the society and language of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar. Whereas I migrated into that culture and knew nothing of it in my early life. As a modern man in the West, Sriram is an extremely informed Yoga teacher who is able to communicate the nuance of the culture of our teachers in modern and useful ways. Sriram speaks of growing up in South India as a radical young explorer of life and his journey into Yoga — a riveting and a brilliant window into how radical Desikachar himself was, absolutely not a traditionally religious or conservative yoga school. And the inspiring story of his relationship with his German wife Anjali and move to Germany. R. Sriram has been working as a yoga teacher in Germany since 1988. In 1977 he began to systematically learn yoga with Śri TKV Desikachar in Chennai, his hometown - he received private and group lessons from him. Sriram also took private Ayurveda lessons with Dr. V. Narayanaswami and attended group lessons with Śri T. Krishnamacharya. For several years, Sriram taught under the guidance of Śri TKV Desikachar at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai Yoga and contributed to the development of the then young institute. The philosophical source texts of yoga, therapy with yoga, mantra yoga and yoga with children from mainstream and special schools were and are his focus. Thanks to his language skills and the support of his German wife, the Indian dancer Anjali, he has become an important link between east and west for many yoga practitioners. Since the nineties he has taught at many yoga training centers and universities and has brought many people closer to yoga in all its aspects in private lessons. With his therapeutic knowledge he was able to give many people the opportunity to find a new, healthy way of dealing with their complaints and illnesses. In this way, R. Sriram has been able to train many students to become well-founded yoga teachers over the years. These teachers offer yoga all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Sriram's childhood in South India and his introduction into spiritual life through music His involvement with radical Chennai theatre communities in the 1970s On meeting his wife, famous German-born Indian classical dancer Anjali Sriram, and the meeting of East and West Memories of J. Krishnamurti and TKV Desikachar and why Desikachar ignored his questions about spirituality Breaking out of cultural expectations and how Yoga helped resolve conflicts Reflections on the culture of the Mandiram community and those teaching and studying there Vedic chanting and the relationship with music Desikachar as “no more than a friend, no less than a friend” and his radical acceptance Dealing with the dreaded question – “What type of yoga do you teach?” Dealing with religious fears and prejudice over 30 years of working as a Yoga teacher in Germany, and how it has changed in that time. Chris Preist, co-director of Bristol Zen Dojo, talks with J about the teachings of TKV Desikachar and collectivizing institutions of yoga. They discuss Chris’s history and study in both yoga and zen, the process of mind and ego at work in yoga transmission, devising practice and the role of oo-jai pranayama in going from gross to subtle awareness, deep commitment in practice, teacher/student relationships, the failing of institutions to address abuse, and the power of sincere friendship and mutual bonds of affection. #018: Simon Borg-Olivier Scott talks to Simon Borg-Olivier on his 50 years as a teacher and practitioner of yoga. Simon Borg-Olivier is a maverick and someone who has truly done his own research into how yoga works for him. Simon Borg-Olivier has been studying traditional forms of posture, movement and breathing for over 50 years. He has worked as a research-based scientist, exercise-based physiotherapist and a university lecturer. He has over 33 years experience teaching yoga, inspiring people all around the world. He co-founded Yoga Synergy in 1984 with Bianca Machliss, leading daily yoga classes, workshops, teacher training courses and international events. His passion for his work has brought him to understand the interconnectedness of the world around us, and the belief that we can make the world a better place by acknowledging and enhancing the connections within us and around us. The purpose of a yoga practise for Simon is to ‘lovingly encourage the circulation of energy and consciousness’ in the body, so that we can be in greater harmony with everything around us. You can find out more about Simon’s profile and teaching schedule here and his teacher training courses here Simon also has a new online Ashtanga Yoga course. You can access it here. Finding The Real Yoga – Simon Borg-Olivier Scott and Simon have an incredibly expansive conversation on SImon’s 50 year exploration into yoga and movement and his search for the ‘real’ yoga. Simon shares incredible stories of his time spent with some of the leading teachers of modern postural yoga and shares how he has formulated his unique approach to yoga teaching and practice. In this inspiring conversation Simon shares: How he was introduced to breathing techniques when he was very young. His fascination from an early age with the connection between yogis and nature. That for him, meditation is a deep deep process of the body and mind based on circulation of the blood in the body. How his approach to meditation resonated with the Iyengar teaching method. How meeting Professor Bim Dev Malik inspired him to see the possibilities of what yoga can achieve. That meeting Shandor Remete in 1985 really deepened his knowledge of Iyengar Yoga and sent him to meet BKS Iyengar in India, leading him to understand that only BKS Iyengar taught true Iyengar yoga. How he learnt Ashtanga yoga in 1985 from Robert Lucas, Cliff Barber and Danny Paradise. About meeting Pattabhi Jois in the 1990s, and w he’s still inspired by Ashtanga yoga. How he met TKV Desikachar, who was an influence too. How seeing and learning the Malakam practice in India inspired him greatly. Learning dasaran in Malakam was challenging but a way to connect with the Indian boys in India. The similarities between yoga postures and martial arts postures. About his time working in an Indian hospital. His decision to teach yoga rather than become an academic in 1992. How, as a result of a friend having a bad accident, he presented yoga exercises to doctors to help rehabilitate paraplegics. That training to be a physiotherapist was about being able to present yoga to doctors as a valid rehabilitation process. How becoming a physiotherapist changed his way of teaching people. His views on how easy it is to become a yoga teacher now, and why he set up his own teacher training programme. How Yoga Synergy became a system that could help benefit a wide range of people, basing it on traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga and adapting it for the modern body. How he healed from a back injury by changing how he moves as well as how he teaches, and how this non-traditional approach has been healing for himself and others. How care needs to be taken with yoga cueing so that their meaning and helpfulness doesn’t get lost or misunderstood How he met his teacher, Master Zhen Hua Yang, in 2007, who he continues to train with. How he sees his role as a teacher as learning from his mistakes and doing better job with his students than he did with himself. That the ultimate purpose of yoga is to realise that we are all one – a manifestation of connected consciousness – which we can start to realise by becoming physically connected with ourselves first. That, for him, the aim of yoga practice is to generate loving information and communication in the body by freeing good energy, and becoming yama and niyama in action. That, ultimately, it’s all about love. Simon talks about: Shandor Remete BKS Iyengar Prashant Iyengar Cliff Barber. ‘To me Simon Borg-Olivier is a teacher’s teacher. A modern day icon and maverick in the yoga world. He is a visionary and has never rested on his laurels, always learning… This conversation get’s behind how he has become the yogi we know and love. An essential listen for all modern day yoga practitioners who are on a quest for real yoga…. Leslie has been described by himself as a ‘yoga educator’, and by others as a ‘yoga cowboy’. This is a very appropriate term, as he really does interest himself in every aspect of yoga; its anatomy, practice, teaching as well as its philosophy. He is a courageous, honest and unconventional thinker in the yoga-world which is really needed now more than ever. Having started practice in the 1970s, he later spent a long period as a student of TKV Desikachar (the son of Krishnamacharya - father of modern toga). Having done his time within traditional studies, he went on to co-author with Amy Matthews ‘Yoga Anatomy’, a book that has sold over a million copies worldwide. He also founded the influential ‘The Breathing Project’, and New York Studio. He now teaches from the wealth of his personal experience accumulated in a lifetime dedicated to yoga informed by his uniquely personal approach.
Amy Wheeler, Ph.D., former President of the Board of Directors at the International Association of Yoga Therapists, founder of Optimal State, talks with J about the current landscape of the “Industrial Yoga Complex” and embodying the principles of yoga. They discuss Amy’s work as a sports psychologist, her training with TKV Desikachar and differences between the way he taught compared to what yoga looks like today, outcomes vs protocols, yoga therapy definitions, grim professional prospects for yoga teachers, and the satvic purpose of yoga. The last of the Introduction of the book, which is the end of the Q&A with Desikachar, Krishnamacharya's son. We cover mainly topics of who can practice Yoga (everyone!), and a big chunk of this idea of guru-dom. What makes a guru? Who is a guru? And some personal insights and things to share with you and perhaps for us all to ponder upon what the heart of yoga is, and does guru-dom even have a place in it. (Answer: no) :D Hope you enjoy listening, these are big chunks of gems in this one, as personally it means so much to us to talk about this topic and it is great to see it so simply put and written about by Desikachar.
We continue on this Pt 2 of Q and A's from the book, the A's answered by Desikachar. Today its about Krishnamacharya's history, how yoga was integrated in the family, and how Desikachar learnt from his dad! Pt 3 next week is the last of the Q and A before the chapters begin! :)
Reading of the Introduction of this book which includes some history on Sri Krishnamacharya, and the start on some Q and A's with his son, TKV Desikachar, the author of this book. Really interesting short history of his life, studies and approach to teaching, and a nice takeaway at the end about approaching how we teach and share Yoga to others.

Ranju Roy and Dave Charlton in conversation with Tara Fraser. Understanding Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the key to understanding yoga itself and yet relatively few of today’s practitioners know how to apply these ancient Sanskrit aphorisms to contemporary life. Yoga Teachers Ranju Roy and David Charlton, both practitioners within the tradition of TKV Desikachar of Chennai, discuss some of the most important sutras in their new book Embodying the Yoga Sutra and show how each one illuminates a different aspect of the vast field of yoga, both on and off the mat. In conversation with author and yoga trainer Tara Fraser. This episode is a live session from #ZEEJLFatBL2019.
Mark Whitwell is a master Yoga teacher and has taught yoga for over three decades internationally and is the editor and contributor to TKV Desikachar's book The Heart of Yoga. Mark is interested in developing an authentic yoga practice for the individual, based on the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, with whom he enjoyed a relationship for more than twenty years. Mark's teachings clarify the profound passion and relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life.Mark teaches Ha-Tha Yoga, which against common understanding means all physical forms of Yoga practice, not a specific "style". Hatha means the merging of the sun and moon, the male and female, prana and apana (two energies), and is a purificating and re-balancing practice where breath and body movement are one. The practice includes Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing exercises which move, activate and increase Prana, vital energy), Bandha (energy locks), Meditation, Relaxation and Chanting. He is the author of 6 profound books including his latest book 'God and Sex: Now We Get Both.' We recently had the pleasure of hosting Chase Bossart for a workshop at Miami Life Center on the teachings of The Bhagavad Gita, part of our month long course Ashtanga Practitioner's Intensive. This text along with The Yoga Sutras are crucial in guiding the path of a yogi. Held side by side, they compliment as well as contrast each other and we thought it would be interesting to dive into the concept of God in this regard. Listen in as Chase so skillfully presents the structures of The Yoga Sutras and The Bhagavad Gita and how and why God or Isvara fits in. Is it necessary to turn to 'God' on the path of the yogi? What is the role of a God in the yogi's mind? Tune in to scratch the surface of what these spiritual texts have to say. Chase is a personal student of TKV Desikachar since in 1991 with a B.A. in Eastern philosophy from Colgate University (1992) and a M.A. in Religious Studies & Indian Philosophy (1996) from University of California (thesis on Patañjali’s Yogasūtra). He lived and studied at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai/India 2003-2004. Yoga teaching has been Chase's sole occupation since 2003. He is a former Director of Therapy & Education at Healing Yoga Foundation with a private practice and an internationally traveling yoga therapist. Today, Chase directs The Yoga Well Institute, offering training programs and online classes. He has studied with many of the world's leading yoga teachers including BKS Iyengar and TKV Desikachar. In 2005, Timothy began his studies with a traditional Ayurvedic doctor, Chandukutty Vaidyar, and spent more than a year at his clinic in Kerala, India. DrMcCall.com
Chase Bossart, founder of Yoga Well Institute, is a longtime student of TKV Desikachar and friend of J’s who returns to the show to shed some light on the essence of yoga with an unconventional view of Patañjali’s Yogasūtras, Samkhya, and Bhagavad Gita. They discuss whether Patanjali wrote the commentary of his sutras, Chase’s reasoning for looking at the sutras alone, misconceptions about the definition of nirodhah and other terms, and a universal picture of yoga based on perception and knowing. The intelligent edge yoga podcast was produced by Kathryn Anne Flynn; author of Teach Kind, Clear Yoga: A Guide for Practitioners and Teachers. To learn more about Kathryn, practice online, or find retreats and training opportunities, visit kathrynanneflynn.com Show Notes:Leslie Kaminoff is one of the most recognized and respected names in American yoga, but he owes it all to Canada... We talk about his beginnings as a teacher, the Yoga Alliance standards creation and review, as well as some breathwork techniques and when holding the breath makes sense. We also discuss...Leslie's forty years as a teacher, and he got started with teaching in Canada! Learning from Swami Vishnudevananda and his senior students in Val Morin, Quebec, so as a Canadian, I insist on credit for his education. (We also talk about TKV Desikachar, who was his Teacher.)We discuss the difference between instructor and teacher, and how Leslie sat at the table during the creation of the Yoga Alliance standards (back when it was Unity in Yoga). We discuss the Standards Review Yoga Alliance is undertaking, and what we both think will come of them.Since Leslie knows so much about breath work and breath anatomy, we discuss breath retention and how it's a natural inclination that can be really helpful.
On today's show of Soul Crush I get into all things God, sex, death and the true understanding of yoga of the heart as shared by Mark Whitwell. Mark is a refreshing voice of reason in a mostly otherwise mad yoga world, and proclaims repeatedly that there is a yoga for everyone while speaking to the many misunderstanding of the popularized yoga of our time. He dismantles the ideas that we are winners or losers in our patriarchal power structures, including the spiritual world. And how we are going to restore hope in humanity by reclaiming the Mother Nature wildness that is this body. I am very grateful to have shared this time. Find Mark and his upcoming training in Bali on his website and on Instagram. Rate us on iTunes and reach out to me @artofloving with questions and feedback. "Each one of us is the power of the cosmos that is arising s pure intelligence that even science cannot understand. It is unspeakable beauty, life. Everything in the natural world is utter beauty, sunlight on the water, each star, and each person is that beauty. And we are intrinsically in perfect harmony with the rest of the cosmos. That's just how it is. You are the power of the cosmos, pure intelligence and unspeakable beauty, in perfect intrinsic harmony with the entire cosmos. This is the fact. It is not the hopeful spiritual language. It is not poetry. It is a fact. The ancient Yogas of participation allow your mind to be cognizant of this fact and rest in the natural state. Without receptivity being half the process of asana, (the very purpose of strength is to receive) the popular ideas of Yoga are continuing the delusion of needing to get somewhere as if you are not already the power and beauty of reality. Yoga is participation only in what we have already been given; not an attempt to get somewhere. The struggle of mediocre gymnastics being called Yoga today were founded by misogynist men and unwittingly passed on by enthusiasts, men and women who exploit the gullibility of the public. The public, already programmed by the dark assumptions of religious power structure that built civilization are already susceptible to the search for a future alternative state in the name of Yoga. This enterprise is the active denial of the natural state, the perfect harmony- union of all with All, including the female-male polarity, which is the nurturing power of All. A pathology abounds of the need to create teachings of all kinds, being teachers, passing on teachings, even after death, obsession over institutional and personal legacy. When all the while Mother Nature is doing a perfect job in bringing us forth and sustaining us in her abundance. Man’s heaven has created a hell of this abundant paradise. There is no need for a teaching. For men to be absorbed in the natural state and committed to Mother Earth and women here is the perfect preparation for death. Not the obsession with teachings and legacy. The search denies the feminine and Mother Earth. It creates the vulgar denial or exaggeration of sex. God realization is in the other direction. We must wake down then we wake up; the embrace of all tangible conditions, body breath and relationship in that order. That’s where God is. Mark is interested in developing an authentic yoga practice for the individual, based on the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, with whom he enjoyed a relationship for more than twenty years. Mark’s teachings clarify the profound passion and relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life. Mark has taught yoga for over three decades throughout the US, Asia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and is the editor and contributor to TKV Desikachar's book The Heart of Yoga.

Have you ever taken (or taught!) a yoga class that was simple in sequencing but deeply powerful in its effect on you? Maybe you love teaching and practicing yoga in a simple way but you feel like you are the only one? Do you think that all your students want fancier, faster and more exciting asana classes? Whether this describes you or not, I am so honored to introduce you to my old NYC buddy Sarah Capua. Sarah is a yoga therapist and meditation teacher, a student of Buddhism and classical yogic practice, and a caregiver. The heart of her practice is rooted in the tradition of T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar, who emphasized individualized practice and believed that yoga should be adapted to foster self inquiry and personal transformation. She also studied meditation and Buddhist teachings with Michael Stone, as well as contemplative caregiving at the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care, where she trained as an end-of-life doula. She lives in Beacon, NY and is currently in post-graduate training in chaplaincy under the supervision of Zen Buddhist Reverend Trudi Hirsch. In this episode you'll hear: What it means to embody our practice in our lives. How we can let our practice and our values guide our decisions in how we structure our classes. Specific examples of the ways we can use our personal spiritual practice to guide what we teach. The deep power in simple teaching and how to offer simple classes confidently. Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, TKV Desikachar. These are all names that many in the yoga community are familiar with and are considered by many to be the pioneers of modern yoga. But thanks to the work of modern yoga scholars like Elliott Goldberg, we are learning about numerous other figures who influenced the modern practice of yoga. Who were these characters and how did they affect how yoga evolved in modern times? Join us with Elliott Goldberg, yoga scholar and author of The Path of Modern Yoga: The History of an Embodied Yoga Practice, as we discuss a figure named Yogendra Ji who paved the way for the modern yoga teacher and set the stage for how hatha yoga would be taught in the west. His sessions lasted about an hour and culminated in savasana, not meditation. Many of his views, such as his feelings on guru yoga and the practical benefits of Hatha Yoga, echo in many modern yoga teachers today. This week I chat with Kate Holcombe of The Healing Yoga Foundation in San Francisco. Kate has an amazing story to tell -- and I asked her to tell it in the top half of the interview -- about how a life-threatening accident while studying abroad in India during college set her on the path of becoming a student of TKV Desikachar. The second half of the interview focuses on a few of the sutras that helped Kate navigate the difficulty of going through breast cancer treatment. I've never known a teacher who has as much reverence for Patanjali's Yoga Sutra as Kate does. She lights up when she talks about them and her enthusiasm is contagious.
