Episode 98: Where is the money going? - taking back (financial) power to yoga teachers-fighting the system! With Clare Nicholls, Hrdayam Bern “My livelihood is completely depended upon my capacity to share authentically and to share with this deep love and compassion. If i don't do my job, i don't get paid. “ Clare This epsiode is a very important one and so close to the heart for me. Clare is my biggest inspiration on so many levels, specifically in fighting the capatalist system within the yoga industry. Last week i started my own classes, completely run on my own, renting a space, doing my thing. In this episode Clare explains why it's so important to do just that, she shares her journey with running her own space in Bern and her passion and love for this thing called YOGA. "I wasn't just going to open another yoga studio in Bern, one because there are so many, two, because I have very strong feelings about capitalism and commercialising yoga. So I wanted to create another system, where I just rent a space and sublet that space to other teachers. Moving away from a commercial model can only be good. Collectives are so much more useful than studios. When places become too big, they become unsustainable. My dream is to have something that lasts." We also speak about: The battle with the current climate….. 3 words bios on an apps, picking and choosing teachers, classes etc. And then there's us, senior teachers, with a few decades of experience, how do we stand stand out? Yoga is not something that works well in a space that has a commercial interest. There's a different kind of energy exchange with these two models of payment, when a teacher gets paid by the studio, doen't even know the student names, just rocks up an teaches or when the teacher gets paid directly by the student, builds a relationship with them, that's a fully different experience. WHAT IS YOGA? Asana is NOT yoga. ...... and so much more! SHOWNOTES: https://hrdayam.ch/INSTA: @hrdayambern HRDAYAM: means heart or heart space. GURU DAKSHINA: The Guru Dakshina is a very ancient concept belonging to the Indian origin. It is unique because no other country has this tradition. It is the tradition to repay one's ‘guru' or the ‘teacher' after the whole process of education is complete. This is done out of respect and acknowledgment by the student towards the teacher or the guru.

Episode 93 On War and Peace brokers with Austin from Urban Sadhu Yoga Austin is back! And this time we explore the heavy topic of war and our responsibility as a yoga teacher to bring this topic into our classes and communities. YOGA IS POLITICS! And this needs to be addressed more. Austin explains his point of view through ancient yogi texts and the way he works with and within his community bringing his views and method of yoga in Jersey City. This truly is a MUST LISTEN! I invited Austin to speak about this topic specifically bcause I feel it's so crazy to be in the business of “peace” as a yoga teacher and be confronted with this war and feel helpless and powerless. I also feel it's our job as yoga teachers to talk about this, to bring politics into class, to have this conversation, we speak about all this and about spiritual bypassing too.... another important topic! “Sometimes I wish it was back in it's little corner where no one gave a toss about it” SG Episode 84: Keeping it real in an industrial yoga complex world with Stewart Gilchrist and Mick Barnes This episode is without a doubt the closest to my heart, as my two main teachers who I love dearly came together in one (zoom) room! CHECK THIS OUT! It's a legendary one! Stewart Gilchrist and Mick Barnes both Senior Yoga Teachers (teaching for over 15 and 20 years) and true legends. We speak about how CAPITALISM IS DESTROYING YOGA! How they both navigate in a world of teacher training, Lulu Lemon world and retreats. Swimming against the tide. Or as Stew says swimming against a huge tsunami. They explain WHAT YOGA IS AND WHAT YOGA ISN'T! . It's an incredible unique, authentic and pure hearted episode sharing the ultimate truth and core of what yoga is or at least should be….. and even if you aren't into yoga, these two will entertain you and open up your eyes and inspire you in many ways! Those are yogas. The other ones aren't, they are businesses, just in it to make a profit. They are made up, without any scriptural history. YOGS ENDS SUFFERING: STEW: I think about quitting everyday. But then I think about how many people are suffering in this world and I suffered badly before I found yoga. I suffered every singe day and I made others suffer. And the one thing that helped me was yoga. So if I can show people that helped me with my suffering I can alleviate some of that suffering for them. That is what keeps me going. That stops me from quitting every single day. YOU CAN'T DO YOGA ON A COMPUTER: MICK: After Covid we got left with the phenomenon that is now Zoom. That has been the most challenging. Our little shala has never recovered, we lost some people because they lost their discipline and now we are still up against the Zoom and it sickened me. It sucked the life out of me, this capitalist marketing, people getting rich with setting up cameras all over gyms and yoga schools, but you can't do yoga on a computer, a big part of the practice is the effort it takes to get to the shala. It's been very hard for me. JUST KEEP GOING: Stew to Mick: Hang in there, you're doing the right thing. I get frustrated and angry with it too, just keep doing what you're doing. What you're doing is fine, it's almost like a separation, you got to separate yourself mentally. You can feel alienated. But you have to keep going….. YOGA IS A SCIENCE: MICK: I believe yoga is a science. If you subscribe to a certain order of practices, processes, being open to being taught, moving from absolute nobody awareness to awareness, its a holistic process, this is so much more than turning a computer on. Teachers need to have these people present, so we can emerge them, teach them, educate them, so they get the full benefit of it. THERE IS AN ORDER FOR EVERYTHING. Give everybody an opportunity to shine be able to teach anyone to practice yoga. You have to start somewhere. IT'S NOT WHERE YOU ARE GOING, IT'S WHERE YOU CAME FROM! MICK: Sharon used to say we are everything there is nothing to get, nothing to gain. And that is exactly it, it's not about where we are going, it's retracing our way back where we came from. (Sharon Gannon, co-founder Jivamukti Yoga) THE EVOLUTION OF THE SPIRIT! MICK: When you get older, you realise it's not really you doing it. That's the practice. The evolution of the spirit, it's not you.

Episode 81 Self Mastery, GETTING REAL and the Conscious Lab with Cherryl Duncan Want to get shit done? GET REAL AND GET WHAT YOU WANT! “I have a lot of ideas and a lot of them fail and then eventually something works and I don't know if it's courage or stupidity probably a bit of both, but I can't not do something” Cherryl We've recorded this episode way back on the 23rd of November in 2021 but both felt it was accurate enough to share it! And I am now also going to be teaching for the Conscious Lab starting this Tuesday the 17th, so perfect timing to share this episode now! :) We talk about going back to believing nothing in tough times, throwing everything out and starting from scratch, and in this way really finding your own authenticity, finding your own values. We also talk about the practical application of yoga at this time and age and how the industry is ever evolving and ever growing. And the importance of having a good teacher! Episode 78: how do you want to be remembered with Steven Hess “You don't get to first place without a second opinion.” How do you design your life? How do you want to be remembered? What is success? What is this work, life, balance business everyone always talks about? According to my guest this week work, life, balance is total BS…… And the difference between an “entrepreneur and an “offtrepeneur” Hear me out! The end of the year is here a perfect time for reflection and setting an intention for next year! Now this guest will most def inspire and help you with that! Meet Steven Hess, an international advisor, mentor and coach, sought-after for his honest, considered and straightforward approach. I have had the pleasure to have a coaching session with him this week actually and it's helped me so very much! We speak about daring to look at yourself, being yourself, bravery, the value of mentorship and coaching others and how we can live our lives to the fullest! Steven fundamentally believes that success is more about legacy than the bottom line. Steven lives in London with his wife and three sons.HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? Now…. that would be a nice intention and question to ask yourself for 23! SHOW-NOTES: The article mentioned: https://www.whitecap-pv.com/articles/work-life-balance-lie https://www.whitecap-pv.com @hesszero7 ABOUT STEVEN: Steven became a coach not by choice but by evolution. Entrepreneur, educator and CEO maverick Steven Hess is an international advisor and coach, sought-after for his honest, considered and straightforward approach. A veteran of global enterprise and fast growth startups, Steven brings decades of experience in the media, consumer, education, health and advertising sectors to his coaching practice. A three-time founder, Steven leveraged his experience to develop and grow the global not-for-profit Startup Leadership Program in the UK into a $158MM, 2,000 job movement while supporting the NHS with its own clinical entrepreneur initiative. Steven has a proven ability to move individuals and teams through rapid change and crisis drawing on his unique blend of business acumen, people skills and yoga teacher training. He fundamentally believes that success is more about legacy than the bottom line. How do you want to be remembered? Steven lives in London with his wife and three sons. ABOUT WHITECAP COACHING: Mentorship, in all its forms, has value - a consultancy will absolutely focus your business and resources (be they human or otherwise) on where it and they need to be. It just tends to ignore the human element when it comes to forging a path toward success. And where a business coach will do wonders when morale reaches rock bottom, it will focus much less on the bottom line. WhiteCap offers a different way forward - empathy, but with action, guidance, and goals; ambition plus authenticity. The science of success is a two-sided coin, and WhiteCap gives you both in a quantified system designed to identify what's working well and areas for focus. https://www.whitecap-pv.com

Episode 59. Eating disorders, ahimsa, veganism and the healing powers of yoga with Marianna from Kind Living Yoga "We need to stop believing that our bodies exist in the world just to be looked at by other people. Our bodies are not lifeless objects, we're not inanimate pieces of art hanging in a museum for people to gaze at and critique." - Megan Jayne Crabbe This episode is one I hold close to my heart as Marianna and I discuss some really important and difficult topics, like having and overcoming an eating disorder, how to deal with that when you're pregnant, being pregnant and plant powered, the journey of self love, the path of compassion and way way more. The episode is a follow up on the live interview Marianna did with me on Instagram last week, which you can watch back on @kindlivingyoga For any info on Marianna's classes, the teacher training they hold and way more check @kindlivingyoga

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ― Margaret Mead The power of the individual. It's indeed so powerful. This lady Michaela is in my opinion such individual. Running her own yoga studio in a small town in Austria, all by herself on her own accord, in these challenging times. I respect that so much and bow down to her strength, resilience and trust. She is an inspiration, no doubt about it. This episode is so real and authentic, I love it. Michaela and I speak about running your own business, the changes she had to go through due to pandemic times, how vulnerable and fragile she felt at times. She shares her views on yoga practice, learning how to stand out more, moving away from wanting to be and feel "normal" and standing out in a crowd! Have a listen and share! Episode 53: To rescue or not to rescue that’s the question with rescue angels Angela and Jason .So if there’s one thing that’s been happening a lot in this pandemic it’s people adopting and rescuing companionship animals. In this episode we focus specifically on dogs. Rescue angels and true specialists in these field Angela and Jason both return (check their old episodes link in notes) .We speak about the do’s and don’ts of animal rescue. They both give some really great tips on rescuing and fostering dogs and their own personal experiences. I wanted to make this episode especially because I feel many people are not aware of the extreme responsibility (and of course also pleasure and a sense of fulfillment) that comes with rescuing animals. Too many times still animals are seen like things, products even more so in Covid times. I am truly passionate about this and so excited to share this episode with the world. .Link in bio! Please share and leave a review! .Jason is a true educator, inspired by his wonderful dog Gibbons (who is no longer with us physically but def spiritually) he travels to schools (currently virtually) to speak to kids about rescue dogs and promoting his wonderful kids books: the Real Bubbins. Which he wrote himself and it explains the true story of his dog Gibbons. As Jason says: We can spray, neuter, shelter, foster and adopt, but until we educate it won’t stop. Angela runs a household full of dogs, some her forever dogs, some foster dogs, some just guests as her partner is a dog trainer, it’s unbelievable inspiring to see the dogs all together getting along, doing their thing. She makes the best videos you have to check out (see link in notes) and she’s also extremely knowledgeable and shares that knowledge with the world on a daily basis, she’s always educating, helping and advising people on the wonderful world of dog rescue.
