We round things off with a discussion of Raj and DK's GUNS AND GULAABS starring Dulquer Salmaan, Gulshan Devaiah, Rajkumar Rao, Adarsh Gourav, and others before launching into our main review: 1993's PARAMPARA. Directed by Yash Chopra, this was Saif Ali Khan's debut film and it took us to many unexpected, half-remembered places. Ian McMillan is joined by an audience at the Belgrade Theatre as he explores Coventry's green places and the river that ghosts through the city with poets David Morley, John Bernard, Sujana Crawford and Olga Dermott-Bond. He is also joined by musicians from the City of Coventry Brass Band. Poet David Morley unpacks the meaning of the River Sherbourne, which flows through and under Coventry. David is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Warwick and his latest collection is 'Fury' (Carcanet). He is also a freshwater ecologist and brings an ecologist's attention and ear for language to his Sherbourne poem. John Bernard also explores the River Sherbourne with a poem called 'Revered River'. John is a spoken word artist and rapper – and a finalist on Radio 1 Extra and Asian Network's ‘Words First' programme. He explores the idea that he has become 'acquainted' with the river. Sujana Crawford reads a poem called 'Marshland Whispers' - inspired by Brandon Marsh, a nature reserve and former quarry. She was commissioned to write the poem as part of Contains Strong Language's 'Green City' project. Sujana's work has featured in many anthologies; her plays have been staged at venues including the Birmingham Rep, and the Belgrade Theatre. Poet Olga Dermott-Bond has been spending time with the City of Coventry Brass Band learning about their history, and experiencing rehearsals. She performs two poems with Stephen McDonald and Christopher Moore from the City of Coventry Brass Band - inspired by listening to the band warm up and by their performance of the hymn 'Nicaea'. Olga is a former Warwick Poet Laureate, and was one of the winners of the 2018 BBC Proms poetry competition. 'Apple, fallen' is her debut poetry pamphlet.
Flow With The Show #006 guest is Laurie Charlesworth, a presenter and music journalist known for her tireless work championing Drum & Bass. Born and bred in Leicestershire, UK, she's worked behind the scenes managing legendary artists Andy C and Adam F, not to mention her work freelancing at Kiss FM, BBC Radio 1xtra and Asian Network. Alongside being the host of Drum & Bass Radio on Spotify (the current #1 show with music on the platform), Laurie is also known widely for becoming the first and currently only female to host the BBC Radio 1 Drum & Bass Show. Head over to my YouTube channel to watch the video podcast: youtube.com/c/flowanastasia I thought it would be super cool to turn the tables and interview the person behind most of the DnB artist interviews I've seen over the last few years. I'm so grateful that Laurie came on the show!! This was our first time chatting live, and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. We talk about her experience working with and interviewing major DnB artists, common threads of success among them, and how she stops herself from fan-girling haha
Anil Sebastian is a multifaceted artist, producer and vocalist producing some of the most unique and otherworldly music to emerge from the UK in recent years. As well as their solo identity, Anil Sebastian is also in Icelandic band Hrím, with singer Ösp and producer Cherif Hashizume. Sebastian is also the creative director of pioneering sonic branding agency DLMDD. Already a familiar face to many in the industry as co-founder and director of the legendary London Contemporary Voices Choir, Anil's work has seen them regularly working on arrangements for and appearing alongside the likes of Alt-J, Manu Delago, Imogen Heap, Elena Tonra (Daughter), Kelly Lee Owens, Eivor, Eska, Nitin Sawhney, Laura Mvula, Sam Smith and U2. The choir has performed at several Burberry fashion shows, The British Fashion Awards, the 2020 Tommy Hilfiger show, two BBC Proms and also features on the Harry Potter Play soundtrack. Anil's choral version of Amber Run's ‘I Found' (which LCV performed with the band for Mahogany) has had over 4 million streams. Having released their debut album “Mesonoxian”, co-produced by Ingmar Kamalagharan and Cherif Hashizume (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne) in late 2017, collecting support on the way from i-D, Stereogum, Clash and Line of Best Fit online as well as radio support across Radio 2, 3, 6Music, BBC London and the Asian Network, the album campaign culminated in a sold out show at London's legendary ICA. “A gorgeous listen from start to finish...brave at every turn” Album Review, Line of Best Fit Since then Anil has immersed themself once again in the creative process, contributing co-writes/features the debut album of legendary producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Imogen Heap, Robyn), Björk percussionist Manu Delago's Silver Kobalt album as well as taking on several bespoke commissions for sync, contributing choral arrangements to queer artist and activist Nakhane's debut album, and co-writing tracks for The Cinematic Orchestra side-project Hunrosa. In October 2020 Anil Sebastian's immersive short film Daffodil was released on NOWNESS. Daffodil has been created with support from Momentum Funding by PRS Foundation, Arts Council and National Lottery Directed by Thiing Studios and written by Anil Sebastian, Daffodil explores the future of artificial intelligence and looks at what it means to be human and how we define identity. Combining animation by Thomas Rawle with slick live action footage and archival footage from Sebastian's childhood, Daffodil is a surreal examination of the moral implications of artificial intelligence through Sebastian's imagination. Set in the near future, Daffodil tells the story of a scientist (played by Anil Sebastian themself) gone rogue and we see them attempting to bring back the conscious mind of a child in the form of an AI. In a parallel, otherworldly meta-verse this playful creature is being created through animation. Paired effortlessly with the film and archival footage, Sebastian's exquisite avant-garde art pop soundtrack provides the perfect backdrop for this mesmerising cinematic experience. The film was shown at Normal? Festival of the Brain as well as at a private screening underground at The Brunel Shaft in London. For Sebastian's cinematic debut, they have collaborated with an impressive list of some of the most forward thinking musicians, artists and thinkers in the UK. Sebastian holds a degree in Physics and Philosophy and they are one of the most unique voices and producers in the UK scene having worked with some of the most iconic global stars such as Imogen Heap, U2 and Bjork producer Guy Sigsworth. Daffodil also sees a contribution by Anil's brother Ingmar Kamalagharan as the co-producer of the film and live drummer on the soundtrack. Kamalagharan has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and works at the UK Space Agency and he is a long-time collaborator of the producer and innovator Cherif Hashizume (David Byrne, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno) in machine learning, interactive music installations and innovative software. Daffodil is a Descartesian meditation on existence and consciousness. As technology continues to infiltrate our public and private life, how can we reach an authentic form of being? Can an artificial intelligence gain consciousness and can it truly exist? Would you bring back someone you lost and if so, would they really be them? By combining science fiction elements with intimate, personal storytelling through encapsulating visuals and soundtrack, Daffodil is a film not to miss. http://www.anilsebastian.com https://www.instagram.com/anil.sebastian

Anita Bhagwandas I’m a brand consultant and journalist who has worked with the likes of Freuds, YSL, Dove, Superdrug, Braun, L’Oréal and many more. I’ve been on Woman’s Hour, BBC’s Asian Network and ITV’s This Morning talking all things race, beauty and wellness. My words have also appeared in The Guardian, Guardian Weekend, Cosmopolitan, Stylist, Marie Claire, Sunday Telegraph, Esquire, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, i-D, NME and Kerrang! to name but a few. I’m now a Contributing Beauty and Lifestyle Director at Glamour UK alongside my freelance and consultancy work. But I’ve also held some seriously prestigious staff roles in the last ten years too. I was Beauty Director at Stylist and stylist.co.uk leading the digital beauty strategy for the brand and pushing the agenda for inclusive beauty to the max (#skinpositivity, colourism, being fat-shamed at spas – you named it, I covered it.) Prior to this I was Acting Features Director at Stylist, coming up with cover feature concepts and flying across the world to interview CEOs, film directors and celebrities at the drop of a hat. I was also Senior Beauty Editor at Marie Claire (winning many awards for my investigative beauty journalism and being nominated for a BSME Columnist of the Year) and launching their plus size fashion column. Before that I was the first Beauty & Health Editor at Women’s Health UK, where I also won both Johnson & Johnson’s and Fashion Monitor’s Journalist of the year awards. I started my beauty career at Stylist when the magazine first launched – becoming the figurehead for calling out racism in the beauty industry after a feature I wrote about it went viral. I’ve always been part beauty activist, part journalist – and above all have a passion for using beauty and wellness as a lens for cultural and social commentary. This week on The Pleasure Podcast we welcome radio producer, presenter, and writer Amrit Matharu. She's currently working for the Asian Network, and has contributed to Radio London, Radio Northampton, and BBC Stories to name but a few. Amrit published her dissertation "Desi and Desire" focusing on British-Asian female identity and has become well known for discussing taboo topics such as sexuality, a subject rarely talked about amongst the South Asian community. She's passionate about promoting body confidence and works as both a body positive activist and plus size model. We talk to Amrit about her Sikh background, Asian family dynamics, and how her parent's values have impacted on her own relationship to romance and sex. She brings a fascinating insight into how a typical Asian upbringing which focuses on virginity, can leave you without the skills to manage dating and relationships, whilst the family pressure to get married ramps up. Asian Tinder and temple matrimonial lists provide one solution to prospective couples, but the beauty standards in this game of top trumps based on height, hair texture, weight and skin colour can create a narrow dating field.Amrit is a firm believer in being part of the ‘generation of change' where although she recognises and understands her parents' beliefs and the affect it has had on her, she would not impose those views on her children. It's an interview full of the cognitive dissonance that surrounds tradition and modern living that gets to the core of our need for tribes and belonging. You can follow Amrit's life and thoughts on her blog Amaretto's World and find links to her dissertation Desi and Desire here.We would love to continue the conversation and hear from you, our listeners: email us at hello@thepleasurepodcast.com or tweet us @ThePleasurePod. The transition from rap artist and Asian Beats DJ to serious journalist with strong opinions has seemed, at least on the surface, pretty seamless for DJ Nihal going from the BBC’s biggest pop station – BBC Radio 1 – to hosting key news programmes on BBC Radio 5Live and the Asian Network. A panel of activists speaks about the South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy and social justice. The mission of SANSAD is to develop a secular democratic South Asian diaspora in Canada. Their goal is to create a secular democratic force within the South Asian diaspora through education and engagement in the struggle for peace, social justice, human rights, democratic rights, and a sustainable world. Their concerns embrace their homelands, adopted land, and other lands where people share our interests. The presenters (in order) are: Jovian Radheshwar is a rap artist, poet and recording artist. Born in Bombay and raised in New York, Jovian taught Black Studies and Political Science in Santa Barbara, California. He currently lives in Vancouver where he teaches Political Science at Douglas College. Jovian finds in rap a powerful medium for making a statement both personally and politically. As MC Bitter Buffalo on the album “No Hooks” (2012), Jovian collaborated with Bobby Musgrave (Pensive Blue Polar Bear) and Ed Keenan (DJ California Condor) in exploring the endangered nature of existence in a technologized modern world. As part of the Endangered Species collective, he performed shows in Santa Barbara, Isla Vista, Goleta, and Los Angeles, California. Sejal Lal was born to South Asian parents, and grew up in Surrey in a confusing diasporic whirlwind of classical Indian dance classes, classical Western violin lessons, and grew up listening to 90's R&B. She also has a degree in Environmental Geography, where she began learning about natural resource management and the true history of colonization on these unceded Coast Salish Territories. Sejal's learning about her place here on these territories, as a settler, and a young womxn of colour, is where she gets her drive to talk about identities, race, gender, justice and goodness - and music is her outlet. Sejal is a member of the hip-hop/R&B collective Laydy Jams, an all-womxn-of-colour group featuring a mix of 3-part harmonies, electric violin, with a bit of 90's throwback. We work to promote minority empowerment, the arts, and social justice amongst youth. Sameena Siddiqi is a PhD student in Art History at UBC. She was born in India and studied at Shanti Niketan, the premier institution focusing on fine arts in India. Samia Khan is a recent graduate from UBC. We have a regular attendance of about 30 people at our Sunday meetings (rather than the small number who RSVP on Meetup). Keep up to date with our current topics at http://bchumanist.ca

The domestic challenge facing Britain's biggest secret intelligence service. What's stopping members of the ethnic minorities from playing a key part in Britain's spy network: discrimination, loyalty or simple old-fashioned prejudice? DJ Nihal Arthanayake, Five Live and Asian Network presenter, gets rare access to GCHQ, the government's secret communication headquarters in Cheltenham Spa. He talks to staff from the black, Asian and ethnic minorities and hears from members of those communities outside about their attitude to the intelligence-gathering organisation. A report leaked to the Sunday Times six years ago suggested that black and Asian intelligence officers were concerned about there being a racist culture. If GCHQ's workforce was truly representative of Britain's ethnic makeup, then 12 per cent would be black, Asian or from other ethnic minorities, but it's not even a quarter of that. Can the organisation change? Produced by Mark Savage.

A live DJ set compiled by me and executed live on the BBC Asian Network for Tommy Sandhu's Love Friday Mix. I do not often put up DJ content online as I see it defeating the object of booking me live (Which is my main method of work) - however to be able to showcase versatility like this was an opportunity I could not pass up, as it does not delve around the usual Nightclub or Wedding DJ set. Big up and thanks to the Asian Network team for allowing me to do this. All credit goes to the original artists whose music this is credited to, which allows me to showcase my talents that you are about to hear. Hope you enjoy, feel free to leave your comments. Salil Acharya & MissMalini run through their 10 favourite films over the last decade as Asian Network turns ten.
Less than two years ago the BBC Asian Network faced extinction. It was spared, but now its budget is set to be cut by almost half. What will this mean for the station, and for its audience? Listener Ravinder Sondh relies on the Tommy Sandhu breakfast show to get her family out of bed in the morning, so Roger goes behind the scenes to meet Tommy and his team in the studio. Roger also talks to Husain Husaini, the Asian Network's head of programmes, about how the station will manage the cuts. Are you filling in the Delivering Quality First consultation document? If so you still have plenty of time, the deadline is 21st December 2011. But some listeners feel the document itself isn't delivering much in the way of quality; too dense, too long and too much jargon. Roger enlists the help of Marie Clair of the Plain English Campaign. And after a Radio 4 news report accidentally declares the speed of light to be many thousand times slower than it really is, Feedback sorts out all this pesky business with neutrinos and relativity once and for all. Radio 4's forum for comments, queries, criticisms and congratulations. Presented by Roger Bolton, this is the place to air your views on the things you hear on BBC Radio.
