The BJP returned to power in Delhi after 27 years, having won a clear majority of 44 out of 70 seats in the Assembly election, the results of which were declared on 8th of February. The swearing-in ceremony for the new chief minister is scheduled for tomorrow 20th of February at Ramlila Maidan.Moving on to another major story, with many Nepali students who were asked to leave the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology University campus in the aftermath of the suicide of an engineering student yet to return to their hostels. The Indian Express has learnt that senior Nepal embassy officials have raised concerns over their safety and security. Two senior officials from the Nepal embassy in Delhi are in Bhubaneswar to hold discussions with Odisha government representatives over the death of 20-year-old Prakriti Lamsal, an engineering student at Odisha's KIIT, and the safety of protesting Nepali students. Lamsal, who is from Nepal's Kathmandu, died on campus Sunday evening, sparking a standoff between Nepali students and the university administration.In another news making headline, the National Green Tribunal rapped the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the Uttar Pradesh government for not submitting adequate details on faecal coliform and other water quality parameters, such as oxygen levels, in the river Ganga in Prayagraj. It granted the state government a week to place on record the latest water quality analysis reports from different points of the river at the Maha Kumbh Mela site in Prayagraj. A bench of NGT was hearing the matter on the compliance of a December order, wherein it had directed the UP government and the Central Pollution Control Board to ensure that water quality in rivers Ganga and Yamuna was fit to drink and bathe in during the Kumbh.Meanwhile, in the news from the North, The Uttarakhand Cabinet today approved a new draft law banning people from outside the state from buying agricultural and horticultural land in 11 of the state's 13 districts. The new draft law will be tabled in the ongoing Budget Session of the Assembly. In a tweet, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called it a “historic step”. Under the new draft law, people from outside the state, except for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, will not be allowed to purchase horticultural and agricultural land, and district magistrates will no longer have the authority to approve land purchases.On the global front, US President Donald Trump defended the Department of Government Efficiency's decision to cancel a 21-million-dollar grant intended to support voter turnout in India today. Questioning the necessity of such financial aid, Trump cited India's economic growth and high tariffs as reasons why US taxpayer money should not be allocated for this purpose. Au risque de jouer avec la vie de millions de patients, car aucune étude sérieuse ne conclut à leur efficacité.  De notre envoyé spécial à Haridwar,Depuis une petite pièce dans le Kerala, au sud de l'Inde, le docteur Abby Philips mène une croisade. « J'ai commencé à faire des vidéos alors que l'Inde était confinée et que de nombreuses informations pseudo-scientifiques circulaient. Patanjali en particulier, avec son mélange de plantes Coronil, censé soigner le Covid. C'était faux et dangereux, il fallait que quelqu'un en parle ! »Derrière des caméras, un néon décline son nom de Youtuber : The Liver Doc. Ce spécialiste du foie multiplie les vidéos contre les fausses promesses faites au nom de l' « Ayurveda ». Cette médecine ancestrale indienne s'appuie sur les éléments tels que l'air et le feu. Mais elle est aujourd'hui dévoyée à des fins commerciales. Patanjali, le leader du secteur, est évalué à plus de 6 milliards d'euros mais accusé de graves tromperies envers les patients. « Les géants de l'Ayurveda comme Patanjali cherchent à faire de l'argent, pas à soigner », avertit le Dr. Abby Philips, qui analyse la composition des produits vendus par la firme. « Dans le Coronil, on trouve du plomb, des solvants industriels, et des plantes sans effet mais toxiques pour le foie. Les médicaments dont ils font la promotion mettent en danger les patients qui y placent leurs espoirs. »Communication XXLRares sont ceux qui osent s'élever ouvertement contre Patanjali. Et pour cause, son visage médiatique, le gourou (professeur, en hindi) Baba Ramdev, est idolâtré par des dizaines de millions d'Indiens. Il est aussi très proche des nationalistes hindous du BJP au pouvoir en Inde. Depuis l'élection de Narendra Modi en 2014, l'Ayurveda est glorifié par le gouvernement comme une religion, symbole de la puissance de l'Inde ancienne. Diabète, épilepsie, Alzheimer… Dans ses vidéos massivement suivies, Baba Ramdev fait l'apologie de ses médicaments, censés guérir tous les maux. « Les médecins vous disent que seule une greffe de foie peut vous sauver », lance-t-il ainsi aux patients atteint de cirrhose. « Mais en réalité, il suffit de prendre un comprimé de Livogrit avec de l'urine de vache au réveil et dans un mois vous serez guéris. »Patanjali prétend désormais prouver scientifiquement l'efficacité de ses cocktails de plantes. À Haridwar, où est établi le siège de l'entreprise, un centre de recherche a été ouvert en 2018. « En Inde, il y a une très riche tradition de plantes médicinales. Pour connaître leur mode d'action, il faut s'engager dans une recherche biologique de pointe », explique en blouse blanche son directeur Anurag Varshney, qui avance que le groupe a « publié plus de 100 articles scientifiques dans des revues internationales. »  Inquiétude croissantePeu de scientifiques sont cependant convaincus par ce mélange des genres. « Ce charlatanisme scientifique rend Patanjali encore plus dangereux », juge Shinmon Jose, immunologiste membre de la Mission pour l'éthique de la santé en Inde. « Les études de Patanjali se contentent de simulations informatiques, de tests sur des rats, alors que le corps humain est bien plus complexe. Leurs hypothèses sont biaisées puisque ses produits sont de toutes façons déjà commercialisés. » Même parmi les spécialistes des médecines traditionnelles, Patanjali inquiète désormais. « Le problème, c'est de faire passer l'Ayurveda pour une sorte de science parallèle équivalente à la science moderne », juge un professeur de cette médecine ancestrale d'une des plus grandes universités d'Inde, sous condition d'anonymat. « L'Ayurveda est né en observant le corps humain il y a des millénaires, sans microscope. Il nous faut distinguer ce qui est utile de ce qui est périmé. »Le scandale lié au remède Coronil de Patanjali durant le Covid pousse désormais les langues à se délier. « Patanjali a gagné des dizaines de millions d'euros de façon criminelle en faisant croire aux patients qu'ils pouvaient leur sauver la vie », juge Prem Agarwal, cardiologue. Ancien directeur de la Delhi Medical Association, il a tenté d'incriminer Patanjali sur le plan judiciaire auprès de la Haute Cour de Delhi ou de la Cour Suprême Indienne. Sans y arriver pour l'instant. « Un jour, Baba Ramdev sera jugé pour ces crimes », veut-il croire. En attendant, le ministère de l'Ayurveda a récemment demandé à Patanjali de retirer 53 publicités mensongères. Mais de nombreuses entreprises continuent à duper les patients. Depuis 2018, près de 20 000 publicités trompeuses liées aux médecines traditionnelles ont été signalées dans les centres de pharmacovigilance indiens.

For there is the anniversary on the 12th of the momentous Temple Entry Proclamation by the Maharaja of Travancore in 1936; on the 14th is the birthday of my late, dear friend Varsha Bhosle; on the 18th is 13 Kumaon’s magnificent last stand at Rezang-la; and on the 26th was the attack on Mumbai.But this year, I am beginning to think it is December, although it is only halfway done. On December 4th, the much-loved Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, died in a helicopter crash. On the 15th, there was the grand inauguration of the Kashi Viswanath Corridor. On the 16th is the 50th anniversary of the surrender of the Pakistani Army in Bangladesh. Also on the 16th, a $10 billion announcement about support for semiconductor fabs.And, as in ‘The Waste Land’, a pandemic still stalks the land. It is a mixture of hope and despair:April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain. Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.After the devastating death of General Rawat and 12 others, there was the astonishing spectacle of ordinary highland Tamils lining the route of his funeral cortege and showering flower petals on the vehicles carrying their mortal remains. It startled me, because I have been led to believe that the average Tamil is this close to secession. The outpouring of genuine grief all over the country at the death of the General is a signal that there is a new India emerging, one where a nation is finally being built, overcoming the fissiparous tendencies and separatism that have bedevilled the country. This is a ray of hope. Gen Rawat stood for a hard, capable, and rising Indian State: he was lionized by the average Indian because he had stood up against the enemies of the nation.There is another India, though, the one that has long claimed to represent the masses. They showed their abundant churlishness by mocking the General’s death. A famous newspaper  had a headline where they didn’t even call him General, but just Rawat, an egregious violation of protocol. And there were others who could barely contain their glee. These people may even actually represent some strands of India: those that are thrusting rentiers, footloose, beholden to or mentally colonized by or pure fifth columnists of various hostile powers, or just plain awed by the West and impelled to copy them. But their days in the sun are over, because Bharat is rising and their India, of connections and plummy accents, is falling. The nationalist Dharampal once wrote movingly of a group of villagers on yatra, pilgrimage,  that he met on a train. They were a group from two villages in UP, of different jatis, and they had gone all the way to Rameswaram. Now they were going to Haridwar, and they had voluntarily skipped the great cities, the Nehruvian ‘temples of modern India’. They were indifferent to them, and to people like us, Anglophone urban residents. That Bharat has always been there, even if it is not visible to most of us. It was this Bharat that, with tearful faces, mourned the General. It is this Bharat that is happy that the dirty, disgusting bylanes of Varanasi have been removed. This Bharat will visit Ayodhya. And this Bharat is the one that has taken to UPI, QR codes, and digitization with a vengeance. It is they who have benefited from various development programs in the recent past, including Direct Benefit Transfer, JAM, UPI, health insurance, crop insurance, new roads and other infrastructure being built, the cooking-gas revolution, reliable electricity, and most of all, the Jal Jeevan mission. If they can be freed from the fetters of the colonial-Nehruvian State (a friend calls it the Anglo-Mughlai State) I suspect they will create miracles. It is this cohort, the salt of the earth, that we are only vaguely aware of, that has sustained Hindu civilization, bloodied but yet unbowed. And they are the ones under withering attack by various enemies of the nation, targets of conversion drives, false narratives, and outright extermination attempts. The low-hanging fruits are in the formerly benighted interior, the Gangetic Plain, sometimes derisively called BIMARU. From my vantage point, I see Kerala, which got an early start, now declining in the state rankings; perhaps like West Bengal. The North shall rise again, and that is a good thing. But others are inventing dangerous myths. There is the oft-repeated (but repudiated even by the Vatican) claim that Saint Thomas came to Kerala in 72 CE. Similarly, there is an effort in Tamil Nadu’s Keezhadi and Kerala’s Pattanam to create a perception respectively, that a) Tamil civilization is older and different from Hindu civilization, and b) that Saint Thomas brought Christianity to Kerala even before Hinduism arrived. The latest instalment in this saga is a story that some ancient rice has been discovered in a dig in Tamil Nadu. This has been breathlessly turned into ‘proof’ that Tamils are different, and in effect not part of Indian or Hindu civilization. Just today I read about the new American ambassador-designate’s plans for India, which include vaguely-worded threats about inciting that mysterious animal, ‘civil society’. That’s a euphemism for creating and sustaining fault lines in Indian society. There was, for instance, an American named Gail Omvedt who lived (lives?) in India, and was systematically attempting balkanization under the rubric of human rights. The ambassador-designate, by some accounts, has messed up so badly as Los Angeles mayor that he has to lie low for a while and get rehabilitated. What better than to send him to India on an errand of ‘sub-national diplomacy’? Surely he’s going to threaten India with sanctions over the Russian S-400 missile system, as well as on other Democrat hot buttons, for instance Ilhan Omar’s new Islamophobia Bill.It is downright insane that a politician is the US envoy to India, when a rising India surely needs a savvy businessman: India will likely grow its trade and manufacturing clout especially given the trend towards reducing China exposure. It shows Democrat animosity towards India, and is further proof that the Quad is dead, after being put on life-support by AUKUS. With the threat of war on the Tibet frontier, and of Omicron in the pandemic, 2022 looks like a year of living dangerously. The only consolation is that Bharat is rising, and that Kashi and Ayodhya have been reclaimed, though not in full measure, for Hindu civilization. 1130 words, 17 December 2021 This is a public episode. Additional Info:Two persons were rescued while 168 are still missing following the glacier burst in Chamoli, District Magistrate Swati Bhadoriya on Friday said. Earlier on Thursday, the rescue operation was temporarily halted following a rise in the level of water in the Rishiganga River. Around 30 people are feared trapped inside the tunnel. The Chamoli Police also informed that the water level in the Rishiganga is rising and the people living in nearby areas are being alerted. The police have requested people to be on alert and not to panic. A glacier broke in the Tapovan-Reni area of Chamoli District of Uttarakhand on Sunday, which led to massive flooding in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers and damaged houses and the nearby Rishiganga power project. Many aerial recces have been done. An 8-member SDRF team sent today on foot to assess the situation. Further action to be taken after evaluation. A team of Garhwal scouts is at standby near the Tapovan Project Site. Apart from that an engineering team and a medical team are present at the site. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on February 7 had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel are distributing rations and essential items in Suki, Lata and Bhalgaun villages that were cut off due to a flash flood in Dhauli Ganga.A glacier broke in the Tapovan-Reni area of Chamoli District of Uttarakhand on Sunday, which led to massive flooding in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers and damaged houses and the nearby Rishiganga power project. An editorial in the Nepali Times says that the flood is “almost identical” to Nepal's Seti River flash flood of 2012, which killed nearly 80 people. The article warns that “it is clear that the countries that share the Himalaya from Afghanistan to Burma have to be prepared for more frequent disasters of this type. Many villages were earlier evacuated as authorities emptied two dams farther down the river to stop the floodwaters from reaching towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh. Two C-130J Super Hercules with 3 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the rescue mission. According to the director-general of the NDRF, the rescue efforts could take up to 2 days. Emergency crews managed to rescue 16 workers who had been trapped inside a tunnel. Another 35 to 40 workers are thought to be trapped in a second tunnel. I've had the immense privilege of sharing space with Ishita Sharma on a number of occasions over the past year. It's difficult to put into words what she does for people, or at least what she's done for me. She is a modern mystic, holding space for life in all of its abundant complexity, from the highest joys and miracles to the deepest suffering and sorrows. She was born in Haridwar, India, and grew up in the Garhwal Himalayas. Eventually, she came to the US to study as a physicist, but turned to architecture and design practice, evolving into a multidisciplinary artist working with paint and sculpture. Through it all, she felt that she was looking for an even deeper framework to explain what felt obvious to her: that we are all connected.Today, Ishita works with contemporary visionaries and spiritual seekers to create futures that are free of past limitations.
