SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are seeking mind and body harmony as we shift our perspective on exercise from vanity to vitality. We've got it all twisted when it comes to exercise because we've been bombarded with images of ripped bodies and weight loss miracles, making us think that's the ultimate goal. But here's the truth: exercise is about feeling good, living longer, and staying vibrant, not just looking good. If you're part of the norm then you've wasted an inconceivable amount of time pining over the ideal body image that is simply unachievable. Not even for the person in the touched-up picture. Why do we wait until our 40's, 50's, or 60's to start taking our health seriously? Probably because that's when we start feeling the effects of not taking it seriously before. Let's shift our focus to health and vitality, and watch how it transforms our lives from the inside out! I will raise my hand first and admit, that my thinking on health and wellness is freakishly flawed. I view myself as curious, an independent thinker, and decently smart so how can I be so off here? Until I dive in to uncover the real reason, I can only point to conditioning. Generational body image issues have deceived me into thinking that nothing tastes better than thin feels and unless you have ripped abs, you're not done yet. UGH Can you imagine the negative, body shaming loop we let play on repeat in our heads? How do we stop it? Achieve our unrealistic goals or cave to our desires. Nope, that's your black-and-white thinking taking over and giving you two impossible choices. TIME-OUT! Want to uncover a better way of thinking?  Me too! Stay with me as we walk through some unfamiliar but important concepts. At now.org I found some alarming statistics on body image Kelly Wallace from CNN shares the dangers of The ripple effects on girls when moms struggle with body image Megan Tripp introduces Harmonizing The Body and Mind - A Harvard grad developed a tension-relief exercise that works with both your mind and body. Found at bostonmagazine.com Creating mind and body harmony involves a holistic approach that integrates physical activity, mental well-being, nutrition, and mindfulness practices. Here are some steps to achieve this balance: Regular Physical Activity Exercise for Health: Focus on exercises that promote overall well-being rather than just aesthetics. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, and balance exercises. Consistency: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week. Mindfulness and Mental Health Meditation and Yoga: Practices like meditation, yoga, and tai chi can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and enhance mental clarity. Mental Breaks: Incorporate short breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge your mind. Nutrition and Hydration Balanced Diet: Eat a variety of foods rich in essential nutrients, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain optimal body functions. Sleep and Recovery Quality Sleep: Ensure you get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Good sleep is essential for both physical recovery and mental health. Rest Days: Allow your body time to recover between intense workout sessions. Mental and Emotional Well-Being Positive Relationships: Cultivate strong, supportive relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Therapeutic Practices: Seek professional help when needed. Therapy and counseling can provide tools to manage stress and emotional challenges. Goal Setting and Personal Growth Set Realistic Goals: Establish attainable health and fitness goals that focus on personal growth rather than comparison with others. Continuous Learning: Engage in activities that stimulate your mind, such as reading, learning new skills, or taking up a hobby. Positive Mindset Self-Compassion: Practice self-compassion and avoid negative self-talk. Recognize and celebrate your progress and achievements. Gratitude Practice: Incorporate gratitude practices into your daily routine to foster a positive outlook on life. Holistic Approach: Combine these practices into your daily routine in a way that feels natural and sustainable. Balance is key, and it's important to find what works best for you. By integrating these elements, you can create a harmonious connection between your mind and body, fostering long-term health and well-being. CHALLENGE: Achieving mind and body harmony is all about embracing activities that make you feel energized and healthy, rather than just focusing on looks. Start today by setting goals that prioritize your overall well-being and celebrate every step you take towards a healthier, happier you!   I Know YOU Can Do It!

Welcome, mindful agers, to Episode 43 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. Today, we're delving deep into yoga philosophy to uncover how understanding and practicing a key yogic concept can lead to meaningful behavior change.Start of The Vritti Samskara Chakra Presentation: 17:12Introduction to Vritti-Samskara-ChakraWe start off by laying some groundwork, explaining the  Sanskrit concepts of vritti, samskara, and chakra. Although they may initially seem esoteric, I assure you that they have practical, day-to-day implications for how we live and change our behaviors.Unpacking VrittiWe dive into the concept of vritti - the modifications or fluctuations of the mind. Understanding vrittis can give us deeper insight into how our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions shape our daily experiences.Understanding SamskaraFrom vrittis, we move onto the idea of samskara. These are latent imprints from past experiences that influence our behaviors, reactions, and habits. I share some personal examples to help illustrate this concept.Exploring the Meaning of ChakraEven though the chakra system doesn't feature prominently in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, it's a core aspect of certain yoga traditions. I provide a brief introduction to this energy system and discuss how it could be influenced by our vrittis and samskaras, to create a repeating mental pattern. Vritti-Samskara-Chakra and Behavior ChangeOnce we understand these concepts, we explore how they can inform behavior change. I talk about how samskaras can create recurring vrittis, leading to deeply ingrained patterns, and how understanding this process can help us break free from unhelpful cycles.Yoga Practices for Behavior ChangeIn the latter part of the episode, we turn to specific yoga practices that can help us lighten the load of our past, reducing the influence of our samskaras, and making space for healthier patterns. I discuss various techniques from asana practices to pranayama, from meditation and mindfulness to mantra chanting, and even the study of sacred texts.Closing ThoughtsWe wrap up with some final reflections on the transformative potential of these practices. Through understanding and working with our vrittis and samskaras, and harnessing the wisdom of yoga, we can replace outdated and unhealthy tendencies with more resourceful and healthier ways of being.Thank you for joining me for this enlightening episode. It speaks to how important it is for us, not just now during a pandemic, but on a regular basis, to make the 12 dimensions of wellness part of our lives. The authors concluded that "certain meditation, yoga asana (postures), and pranayama (breathing) practices may possibly be an effective adjunctive means of treating and/or preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection". Turning to the environment, President-elect and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris have a plan for climate change.  They intend for the US to become the world’s clean energy superpower.  They say we can export our clean-energy technology across the globe and create high-quality, middle-class jobs here at home.  References Alkhatib A. Shivadasani Seminar Dr Prabhavati Reddy 9 Jun 2016 By the fifteenth century, the Nath lineage of Siddhas had emerged as influential teachers and wonder-working yogis in the Telugu-speaking region of Srisailam in South India. Both textual and archaeological evidence suggest that Nath gurus have gained popularity among royal families and common people as well as the establishment of regional Nath parampara traditions, combined with Saiva, Tantra and Hatha Yoga practices in the environs of Srisailam. In this seminar, we will discuss the mid-fifteenth century Telugu work, the Navanathacaritra of Gaurana, which is a primary source dedicated entirely to the history of nine Nath teachers, in particular the fifteenth century Prakara’s art narratives depicting the Naths and a variety of Siddha portraits in hatha yoga postures. The Navanāthacaritra is the first work to give a list of nine Naths corresponding to those found in later Nath works and it also contains important information on the localization of Nath yogis, the Saiva-Nath affiliation, and Tantric and hatha yoga techniques. This seminar explores the five facets of Nath religious culture, including: 1) the historical account of nine Nath Siddhas based on the NavanathaCaritra and the art narratives of Minanatha (Matsyendra), Gopala (Goraksa) and Sarangadhara (Caurangi); 2) the kundalini-based yoga techniques and hatha yoga practices by Nath gurus; 3) the Yogini-Kaula cult of Matsyendranath; 4) a variety of Siddha portraiture and hatha yoga asanas; and 5) the placement of Srisailam’s Nath religious culture within the broader context of the Nath tradition.  Dr Prabhavati C. Reddy is an Adjunct Faculty member of Religious Studies at George Mason University in Virginia, USA. She is an interdisciplinary scholar with a Ph.D. in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Harvard University, an M.A. in Asian Art History from the University of Texas-Austin, and an M.A and M.Phil. in Ancient History and Archaeology from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. She has previously taught at George Washington University and was a two-year Andrew Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow at Northwestern University where she taught in the Department of Religious Studies. She specializes in Hindu traditions and is interested in the historical development of sectarian traditions with reference to constructive theological frameworks and syncretism, religious authority and identity, and conflict and resolution in response to sociological and political processes. She is the author of Hindu Pilgrimage: Shifting Patterns of Worldview of Srisailam in South India (Routledge, 2014) and has published several articles on Indian art and Indian diaspora/Hindu temples in North America. She is currently working on two books entitled, The Tantra and Siddha Traditions at Srisailam: Kundalini and Hatha Yoga Practices in Medieval India and Vaisnava Rituals and Sacred Images. She has lectured at universities in both the U.S and India as well as has presented papers at professional conferences.
