This week, our Pastoral Resident, Elijah Elmer, unpacks the narrative of Abram's victorious rescue of Lot in Genesis 14. Not only do we see Abram as a type of Christ's victory in rescuing sinners, but we are introduced to the righteous king-priest Melchizedek, who points to Christ as well. How does Abram's faith in God's promises teach us to rely on the Lord? How does the significance of Melchizedek carry forward throughout scripture and resonate the grace of Jesus?

In our Pastoral Resident, Amelia Hamiter's sermon this past Sunday, we sit with Luke 10:25–42 — holding together the story of the Good Samaritan and the tension-filled moment between Martha and Mary. Two familiar passages. One shared thread: compassion.Through the parable of the Samaritan, Jesus expands our definition of neighbor and redefines mercy as costly, embodied action. Through Martha's overwhelm, we see what happens when service untethered from presence begins to drain us. Together, these stories invite us to wrestle with a hard question: How do we remain compassionate without burning out?We explore compassion fatigue, the limits of our capacity, and the difference between urgency and intentional love. What if the invitation isn't to do more, but to root our service in a different posture? What if mercy flows best from a place of grounded presence rather than anxious striving?Whether you feel like the Samaritan on the road, Martha in the kitchen, or the weary traveler in need of care, this conversation makes space for honest reflection about loving well — and sustainably.
In this week's message, our Pastoral Resident, Amelia Hamiter, explores with us what it means to find hope in the shadow of empire. Scripture reminds us that while dominant powers insist on telling us who matters, what's required, and which stories are “real,” God disrupts that narrative in the most unexpected way—not through palaces or positions of authority, but through a voice crying out in the wilderness.

We hope you'll take the time to listen in and get to know her as she shares about her life story and faith journey and how she came to apply to our church! WBC Stories is a periodic series we offer through our podcast, in which we'll invite members and friends of our church to share stories from their journey of faith. One of the challenges of being church together is getting to know one another in deep, meaningful ways. We believe it's important to share stories like these to point to God's presence in our lives all along the way. Thanks so much to Kali for her willingness to share, and thank you for taking the time to listen in!

Hezekiah Trevino, our Pastoral Resident, teaches from 2 Corinthians 3:1-6 at the Holt Venue."Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are Christ's letter, delivered by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God — not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.Such is the confidence we have through Christ before God. It is not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God. He has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life."Get a digital copy of the Cruciformed JournalSubscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Visit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.com

In this week's One Takes, Pastoral Resident, Molly Smerko reflects on the mystery of God. While no one has fully seen God, there are many ways that we can reflect on God's majesty. Molly uses a newly released children's book, "What is God Like?" (Evans/Turner) as one way to think about who God is. What things - art, music, nature - help you to ponder God? We hope you will take time this week to reflect on the majesty and mystery of God that is all around us.

John Prickett, Associate Pastor, and Sophia Ma, Pastoral Resident, of Antioch Community Church of Waltham join us to share what they each have seen our ANE Relational Value of Authentic Relationships to look like in their own lives. Curious what we mean when we say Authentic Relationships? Here's how we define and where we see it in the Bible:Authentic Relationships | Cultivating a community of trust Jesus' relationships were marked by honesty, vulnerability, and accountability. We aspire to be genuine and gracious with those inside and outside the church. In doing so, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to one another. See also Matthew 18:15-17; Acts 2:42-47; Romans 15:5-7; Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 3:12-15
Weekday Worship welcomes our second guest ever. A conversation with Generations' Pastoral Resident, Scottie Finlayson.
This week's sermon, brought to us by Mykel Pollock, CityLife's Pastoral Resident, asks the question, “What is the driving force in your life? Faith or fear?” In Matthew 14:22-33, Peter briefly walks on water towards Jesus, focused on His confidence in Christ. But as soon as his focus shifts to the circumstances, fear sets in and Peter starts to sink. How often do we do the very same thing immediately after seeing God do something miraculous in our own lives? We must come to realize that God chooses to exercise His power through us, in direct relationship to our confidence in what only He can do.
This week's sermon, brought to us by Mykel Pollock, CityLife's Pastoral Resident, discusses lukewarm Christianity. In Revelation 3, Jesus writes to the church of Laodicea about being neither hot nor cold and a faith that was not reflective of His kingdom. We know Jesus did not leave them - nor us - in mediocre faith, but counseled them and promised that if they repented and turned back to Him, they would reign with Him forever. That same promise stands for us today and so we should and could do with some self-reflection and asking ourselves, “Are we living the life of a lukewarm Christian?”
On today's episode, listeners will have a chance to get to know Ethan Smith, Grace's Pastoral Resident. Ethan is thoughtful, wise, and humble. We are honored he is spending this year learning the heart and soul of pastoral work and serving us.
