“We are a much-lectured people,” wrote Robert Spence Watson in 1897. Beginning at mid-century, cities and towns across England used the popular lecture for purposes ranging from serious education to effervescent entertainment and from regional pride to imperial belonging. Over time, the popular lecture became the quintessential embodiment of Victorian knowledge-based culture, which itself ranged from the production of new knowledge in the most elite of learned societies to the consumption of established knowledge in middle-class clubs and the hundreds of humble mechanics' institutions initially founded to provide scientific instruction to workers. What did the “average” Victorian talk and think about? How did the knowledge-based culture of lecture and debate enable men and women to demonstrate both civic engagement and cultural competence? How does this knowledge-based culture and its changing expression give us ways to look at Victorian citizenship long before the extension of the franchise? With engaging and accessible prose Anne Rodrick draws from a variety of primary sources to provide fascinating answers to these pertinent questions. Based on the analysis of several thousand lectures and debates delivered over more than 50 years, Lecturing the Victorians: Knowledge-Based Culture and Participatory Citizenship (Bloomsbury, 2024) by Dr. Anne Rodrick digs deeply into what those individuals below the most elite levels thought, heard, debated, and claimed as a badge of cultural competence. By the turn of the 20th century, the popular lecture was competing for attention with new institutions of leisure and of higher education, and the discourse surrounding its place in contemporary England helps illuminate important debates over access to and deployment of knowledge and culture. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. A portable handy little one. I got it in Sound Store Waterford.  €50 I think. We've been mainly on campsites using our ACSI card. Roughly 20 a night in Spain & France. Because we're mostly on campsites we're mostly plugged in so this stove is getting some use. Even boiling our whistling kettle. I bought a gas bottle in Spain when I arrived. It's the same connection in Ireland. You can opt to buy the bottle without a return contract and it's about €20 cheaper. I won't be back in Spain so I opted for this. Repsol is a major petrol station over there. That's where I got it.     The stove will pull 8 amps if both hobs are on fully but even if you have a 6amp hook up you could have both hobs on 70% and you'd be fine on 6amps and plenty hot to cook.  That's my main tip so far. Save a bit of gas and try not change bottles too often as they are different in most countries as well as the green aspect of cooking on electricity.      All the best lads, love the show!  Dean Carroll      Grantham Leisure on TokTok for great Tips  https://www.tiktok.com/@granthamsleisure?_t=8nsbwfN16iO&_r=1       Camp life:   Inspired by a cousin of mine Philip.

Somehow I suspect you've either recently been in a conflict where you were corrected or have seen a need or opportunity to offer correction to another. If not, perhaps it's just around the corner. How about some guidelines from Jesus about that? Because we are God's children, and He warns us sternly against "despising the little ones." After radical detachment, we have to "turn back" to rescue the lost sheep of our inner child, and the lost sheep in our original and church families when they are also our brothers and sisters in Christ. Using Matthew 18 as a touch point for discussion of the inner child is what we call using a "spiritual sense" of Scripture. It's fascinating to me that Jesus emphasized His teaching in 18 and part of 19 by placing children before Him (remember that chapter and verse numbers were not in the original writings, but added for our convenience). Like flesh and blood parables, children bookend His teaching on boundaries, and we learn that not only are healthy boundaries necessary to faith in dealing with one another in the family of God, but they're also necessary in human and faith development, too.  Thank you with all my heart to my newest Friends of the Show, Melanie D; Bruce R; Veronica W; Melinda M; Loren G; Tessa W; Lindsay B; Ann C; Carol S; Christina C; Vicki G; Anita C; Christin L; Emily P; Anne B; and Kevin G, for for loving and lifting me! The Text: This week's text is Control, spanning from pages 149 - 154.  Synopsis: Wu, Hammond and Arnold begin to feel some anxieties of the consultants actually recommending that the park be closed for safety reasons, and become leery of Malcolm and Gennaro in particular – while our consultants tour through the sauropod paddock, enjoying the view of Triceratops, Apatosaurus and Hadrosaurs. Muldoon, on the other hand, has anxieties of the consultants' actual safety, and preps his Jeep with a rocket launcher just in case – which isn't much of a vouch of confidence for the park's safety is it? At the same time, a large storm coming in jeopardizes the safety of the big supply ship, the Anne B, and since Hammond spared the expense of installing a storm barrier at the docks, this ship must depart early. Oh, and unbelievably, contrary to everything they've been told so far on this tour, Tim spots a rogue velociraptor running amongst the hadrosaurs, and it's so unbelievable everyone scrambles to find an explanation. Ep #185 - Unlock The Burnout Barriers. An Interview with author, Anne Bérubé. I have to start by exclaiming how impacted I was by my guest for this episode of Empowering Chats. I joked with her at the start of our interview about how much I felt her latest book, entitled, The Burnout Antidote, A Spiritual Guide to Empowerment for Empaths, Over-Givers and Highly Sensitive People was written specifically for me. Anne Bérubé is an author and a teacher / coach, and she also runs workshops she calls “Happy Sessions." Anne and I had a lively and insightful conversation about those choices we make and how we find ourselves in burnout situations. So much of what Anne has written about speaks directly to me. And I have a feeling it will do the same for many of my listeners. Anne shares how she  used to carry a limiting belief that you can't experience burnout when you are living your purpose. If you are living your purpose, how can you burnout? That's when she realized that the place she was giving from was not sustainable because it was based on beliefs of needing to please and be needed, or liked by those she was serving and helping.  And so, she found herself going through this process of digging deep to finding out who she was at her core.  She had to ask herself, “Who was I before people started needing me?” Anne talks about the power of the patriarch and how that differs from the energy of the feminine. She goes onto express that feminine power is the source embedded in our earth, we are all sourced from the feminine. She feels we all need the grounding of our Mother voice, the one that says: “I am holding you. I am nurturing you. I am not going anywhere. I love you.” Anne and I both agree that we need to learn to love ourselves like that and recognize the masculine energy is actually a servant to the feminine and when they work together it can be powerful for everyone involved.
