Last year, David Peak released "The World Below," a midwestern gothic tale intertwining two rival families whose animosity sparks amidst a ritualistic occult murder mystery, amplified by heroic doses of LSD. Published by Apocalypse Party, a rapidly acclaimed purveyor of top-tier horror, "The World Below" is a testament to their commitment to darkness. This book seamlessly blends atmosphere and narrative, achieving the rare feat of being both immersive and a page-turner. David Peak's work aligns him with horror luminaries like Brian Evenson, Clive Barker, and Poppy Z Brite. In this episode, we delve into reading as a psychedelic act, exploring how family feuds in small towns can evolve into an art form. We also dissect the drama and artistry of Jerry Springer, touch on the American mythology surrounding the West Memphis Three, and revel in the exhilaration of death metal and films like "Mandy." "A brilliant and flayed slice of Midwest gothic. While one might find traces of Poppy Z. Brite or Michael McDowell here, The World Below is wholly its own beast. Peak laces the classic premise of feuding, cursed families with high-potency LSD, forming something fresh, potent, and filled with ache." -B.R. Yeager, author of Negative Space "Violent, noir-soaked horror infuses every page of David Peak's astonishing The World Below, coiling like a serpent around love: first and lost loves, love of family and the land, love of darkness and blood. Peak mixes the most primal of emotions like an alchemist, leaving every reader transformed." -Livia Llewellyn, author of Furnace SOCIAL: Twitter: @WakeIslandPod  Instagram: @wakeislandpod David's Twitter: @raviddice --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wake-island/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wake-island/support

Enter Boogeyman was sent to me for review by Acheron International: Thank you, Melina! While I am late in getting the news and review out, there are still 4 days left to go if you want to fund the printing of this anthology. Poppy Z. Brite wrote an illuminating introduction... and we will need it to see by down these dark halls wherein the boogeyman dwells. There are 18 stories about various boogeys ~ and four of the eighteen stories are reprints: the ones by Stephen King, Joe R. Lansdale, Ramsey Campbell, and Richard Chizmar. If the introduction and knowledge doesn't chase the haints away, it glows in th dark too, so that may light your way. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/acheronint/enter-boogeyman-the-horror-anthology I also get into other boogeymen: from the recent film from a story by Stephen King and even The Halloween film franchise. From wikipedia, "The Boogeyman is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage from a screenplay by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman and a screen story by Beck and Woods. It is based on the 1973 short story of the same name, by Stephen King.[6] The film stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and David Dastmalchian." It is on Hulu and Disney and I rented it on Itunes. We even get to talk once more about "Becoming the Boogeyman" by Richard Chizmar which is "genuinely chilling and something brand-new and exciting” (according to Stephen King) and comes out October 10 as the follow up to the successful "Chasing the Boogeyman". Chizmar also has an entry in Enter Boogeyman. It all came together after a little Carpenter movie marathon and I realized I'd not said, read or heard the word boogeyman more in the last few days than I had over my entire life.  On this episode, we discuss books by LGBTQIA+ authors, one of the prompts for Books & Bites Bingo. We've got a diverse group of characters and settings for you, including a Splatterpunk novel set in 1990s New Orleans, a Booker Prize-winning novel set in the United Kingdom, and a YA novel set in 1987 El Paso, Texas. Michael's PickMichael read Exquisite Corpse by Billy Martin (formerly Poppy Z. Brite). This Splatterpunk novel about a pair of gay, necrophiliac serial killers in New Orleans is not for everyone--even Michael admits he had to put it down at times. But the lyrical writing and focus on the AIDS epidemic kept him reading. Pairing: Immerse yourself in the New Orleans setting with a bowl of Duck and Andouille Gumbo, a recipe that be found in Justin Devillier's The New Orleans KitchenCarrie's PickCarrie recommends the Booker Prize-winning Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo, an Anglo-Nigerian writer. Each chapter is told from the third-person point of view of eleven different British women and girls and one nonbinary person, ranging in age from their teens to their nineties. Their different classes, races, and sexualities highlight the diversity of the United Kingdom. The book's power grows as you see the characters' lives intersect.Pairing: This book is full of delicious sounding Caribbean and West African dishes, but the description of a character making Thai Chicken Coconut Curry is especially mouth-watering. Lemongrass and Coconut Curry with Summer Vegetables has similar ingredients and would be a great way to use up some summer squash.Jacqueline's PickJacqueline enjoyed Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Pen Faulkner Award-winning author Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This YA novel is a coming-of-age, LGBTQIA+ story set in the summer of 1987 in El Paso, Texas. It tells a story of a friendship between two boys on the cusp of manhood. The author uses the boys' friendship to explore issues of family, ethnicity, and sexuality.Pairing: An Edible Mosaic's brisket recipe would make a good choice for a summer picnic under the stars.

Welcome to an altogether new show here at Cinema Degneration we are calling "Without Warning." The theme for this show is unlike any other in our lineup. Hosted by Cinema Degeneration CEO Cameron Scott and author and host of 'The Diabolical Index' Korey Dawson. The theme is simple: Scott calls Dawson out of the blue with no warning as to what the topic of conversation will be...without warning if you will. Scott will continuously test the overall skill and level of pop culture and movie expertise of Mr. Dawson with totally random topics including movies, literature, pop culture, music, art, comics and more. Dawson has absolutely no prior knowledge to these show topics and is going into the discussions totally blind. These shows are a hoot to record, and we hope as much fun for the audience to listen back to. The second episode show topic is on "BOOKS VS FILMS". Essentially you are all in for a deep dive discussion on various authors and books and the movies that were based on them. Topics range from Dracula, to Stephen King, Frankenstein, Poppy Z. Brite, Clive Barker, Robert R, McCammon and many more. It's a literary adventure of cinematic proportions! Join us!

The Cleft Serpent is the 13th album of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. The two-CD edition which is also available on vinyl, minidisc, cassette and digital format is one of Projekt Records'  ' founder Sam Rosenthal's latest production. Black Tape For A Blue Girl began over thirty years ago by Rosenthal's exploration of brooding extended electronics and strings meshed with deeply revealing lyrics and darkly textured, melodramatic vocal performances. The ethereal, gothic and dark ambient stylings has made the band one of the originators of the American darkwave genre. Rosenthal's pensive electronics and revelatory songwriting has made fans of director David Lynch, former adult actress Sasha Grey, writers Poppy Z. Brite and Caitlín Rebekah Kiernan, just to name a few.The latest album weaves the tale of the enigmatic Cleft Serpent, as we follow him through time and space within a lush, dark and sensual musical palette of string-hued Neo-Classicism. It's rich and engaging, created by our three-piece ensemble featuring new members, Jon DeRosa's powerful vocals and Henrik Meierkord's mournful cello strings twined around Rosenthal's somber electronics. https://www.projekt.comhttps://blacktapeforabluegirl.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on MODSNAP Alternative RadioKMOD: San AntonioListen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com3pm to 5pm (HST/Hawaii Standard Time)5pm to 7pm (PST/Pacific Standard Time)6pm to 8pm (MST/ Mountain Standard Time)7pm to 9pm (CST/Central Standard Time)8pm to 10pm (EST/Eastern Standard Time

For episode 48 I have a conversation with a young and upcoming voice in the rising Queer horror movement. Of course, queer horror is nothing new Clive Barker and Poppy Z. Brite were out voices as far back as the 80s and 90s but exciting new things are happening in this space and Hailey has become a leader in the movement based on the strength of Her novella The Worm and His Kings which is an early favorite for a favorite read of the year already. Hailey Piper writes horror and dark fantasy and is a member of the Horror Writers Association. Her other titles include Unfortunate Elements of My Anatomy, The Possession of Natalie Glasgow, and Benny Rose, the Cannibal King. Her short fiction appears in such places as Year's Best Hardcore Horror, The Arcanist, Flash Fiction Online, Daily Science Fiction, Tales to Terrify, Blood Bath Literary Zine, and lots of other spaces. In this conversation, we talk about Hailey's early and modern influences, her early books, and her new collection. Then we dive into a spoiler-free and spoiler-tastic look at The Worm and His Kings. Don't worry there is a warning but you can listen to most of the interview without concern of spoilers. If you want to support the podcast, please like and subscribe. Brite, The Crow: Salvation mixes up the formula a bit with its crooked cops angle. Eric Mabius is a bit bland as this movie's Crow, but Kirsten Dunst brings it as Erin Randall, the sister of the murdered girlfriend. Perhaps the darkest of the series, this is a slight improvement over The Crow: City of Angels.  Sequelcast 2 and Friends is part of the Greenlit Podcast Network Follow the show on Twitter @Sequelcast2 Like our Sequelcast 2 Facebook Page Listen to Marc with a C's music podcast Discography. Références citées - Jean-Claude Dunyach - Elisabeth Vonarburg - Dan Simmons, préface aux Contes de la fée verte ; Poppy Z. The latest installment of Rose Sinister: Vampires is a deeply personal reflection on a vampire story that had a huge impact on my life- and why sometimes, revisiting the magic of our youth can challenge us to re-examine the stories that shape us. One of the best, and most disturbing, vampire novels ever written, Poppy Z. Brite's shocking 1992 novel, Lost Souls has had a huge impact on the lives of many of its readers. It's not a novel for the faint of heart, and while this episode isn't explicit, it does come with a content warning for disturbing subject matter and, of course, spoilers. I'm particularly interested to know what your thoughts on this novel are, if you read it when you were young, and if you've re-read it as an adult.

it was almost exactly six months. that’s wild. I’m not saying Poppy Z. Brite is dumb, just not “bright” like Trolls is “bright”. Also the music is “Turkish Lady Face” by The Underscore Orkestra and “I Will Get Back Up Again” by the good people at Dreamworks? I dunno. It’s included for review purposes please don’t

**Content warnings: This episode references potentially triggering topics, including abusive relationships, gaslighting, murder, cannibalism, sexual assault, violence, incest, Real Person Fan Fiction, and age differences--a lot of triggers that constitute "dark" or "problematic" fiction. While we don't dwell on many of these subjects, they are referenced, and people may want to protect themselves accordingly. Also, there are mild spoilers for Hannibal and other pieces of media referenced.** Don't miss the very important announcement about the future of THR and our other podcast ventures! We have exciting news to share and want feedback from our listeners to give you the best experience possible. This episode, we head over to the Dark Side of queer publishing and fan fiction (and give you several more TED Talks). Austin and Amanda think that the widespread use of content and trigger warnings in fandom and queer fiction give readers the ability to curate their own experience and examine their reactions to fiction in ways that mainstream media doesn't typically allow for. Amanda talks about her own journey through dark media and how she's drawn and redrawn her own lines, and Austin does the same. Ultimately, both hosts believe there is no consensus as to what constitutes "good" fiction versus "problematic" fiction, that policing other people's engagement with media is impossible and reductive, and that humans are complicated and messy by nature.

Grey Cross – Episode 79 Summary of Show: A lifetime can be a masterpiece of creativity.  As a child, Grey Cross was turned away from his itching passion for creativity by the typical conservative “you can't do that for a living” argument that so many children fall victim to.  As he evolved and grew into a need to rediscover his passion and true calling in life, Grey set himself loose from the life he knew and hit the road for years of uncertainty, soul searching and self-reinvention.  Through travel, minimalism, writing, photography and a huge evolution of painting and sculpture through touchable art, Grey advanced through various stages of creativity and arrived at a place of contentment. I absolutely adored talking with Grey about his years of floating and self-discovery and the powerful message he is conveying through every piece of art he touches.  His work is simply astonishing. Here are the highlights of my funky conversation with Grey:   20:56 : Loving the arts when he was young but stumbling when told not to pursue it early on. Discovering how detrimental this sort of negativity is to the younger generation, 23:21 : Having a wonderful relationship despite being married young, being miserable by straying from his passion, and how he mended this by a decade of soul searching, 25:21 : Key lessons he learned on the years on the road including taking chances, surviving a minimalistic lifestyle, working with limited resources and being himself, 29:50 : How discovering himself contributed to his creativity , pursuing photography when he got to New Orleans, and finally finding his contentment in painting, 33:12 : The stages he went through in his art career from creating touchable art, to luminescent art, finding interest in Crayola and metallic art until he got to coming up with 3D pieces, 39:12 : The messages his artwork conveys and concepts where some of his artworks are based on, 42:20 : The length of time it takes him to complete his pieces, the biggest battles he faced and the habits he has in place, and 53:15 : His future plans of designing a course to match artists of talent with children of talent. List of Creative Influences: The Art of the Long View If you could spend one hour creating something with anyone from the past or present, who would it be and what would you create? I would like to study under Yayoi Kusama and watch her process as she makes amazing art. If you had to battle Godzilla, how would you use your creativity or talents to defeat him? I would use the same solution as they use when they fight giant forest fires but instead of using water, I will take a container that's slightly heated, fill it with super glue, take it up with a helicopter and release the glue on top of the monster until he ceases to move. Favorite Quotes and Advice:  ·       If you have talent and ability, you can take it somewhere if you get past the stumbling blocks of life that will be placed in front of you. ·       The great thing about art is that you can create something, and then you can totally wipe it out and do something different. ·       Sometimes we have to be a poor, starving artist to appreciate that creativity can come from the craziest things.
