When Carrie and I began recording The Perks of Being a Book Lover, we called it our half-assed idea. One year later, we are still half-assing our way through it, although we think we have learned some things and gotten more adept at using microphones, troubleshooting the recording technology, and asking interesting questions of our guests. It was a year filled with laughter, frustrations, and climbing learning curves. We thought it would be fun for our 1-year anniversary recording and 47th episode to put ourselves in the hot-seat, and fortunately, Carrie's daughter, Norah, agreed to ask us the questions. Like a lot of 16-year-olds, she was excited to do it the night before but seemed to be completely bored and uninterested during the actual interview. She yawned and Pinterest-ed her way through our answers, which may be what a lot of our listeners do as well as they listen to it. In this episode, we discuss how we started the show, some of our favorite experiences with guests, and what dictatorial book choices we'd make if we had the power. Books We Discuss In This Episode: 1- Moby Dick by Herman Melville 2- Sula by Toni Morrison 3- Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- The Fifth Season by N. Book Vs Movie The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Replay) The Story Behind the 2008 Novel & the 2018 Movie Are you ready for a little 1940s weepy? The Margos sure are as they talk about the novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society that was started by Mary Ann Shaffer who brought on her niece Annie Barrows to help her finish when she became ill. Shaffer spent some time fogged in at the airport on the island of Guernsey which is located by the English Channel. After checking their local bookstore she found out the island was occupied by the Germans in World War 2 and she became obsessed with the idea of placing a historical fiction story based there.  The novel is told in an epistolary format and features an array of intriguing characters who come together under terrible circumstances and create their own magical world. Taking place in 1946, London-based writer Juliet Ashton is stymied on what to write after her last book was a disappointment in sales. After starting a correspondence with a group of book club members based in Guernsey she impulsively decides to visit the island and her life is upended by the power of love. The film is from director Mike Newell and at the time of this recording, is streaming on Netflix. So between the novel and the movie--which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out. In this ep the Margos discuss: The backstory of how Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows collaborated to bring the novel to life. The true story of the German occupation of the island of Guernsey. We touch on the significance of ANZAC Day and get the housekeeping done (Caro gets a whack about a recent recommendation).  Why is it so hard for politicians to say “we were wrong”? Caro and Corrie examine the Royal Commission into banks, talk about Kelly O’Dwyer’s recent interview with Barrie Cassidy (with some behind the scene observations from Caro).  We take a look at two of the biggest AFL stories of the week featuring Adam Goodes and Sam Powell Pepper . After last week’s chat about stuffed up song lyrics - we’ve some fresh Mondegreens to share including a few from our listeners.  In BSF - Caro’s been reading ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ by Holly Ringland.  She’s been off to the movies to see ‘The Party’ and ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society’. And Caro shares a great recipe for Cumin-Spiced Cauliflower wth Fried Lentils and Spinach Yoghurt.  Condescending reporting of the Queen’s birthday is making both Caro and Corrie grumpy and in ‘6 Quick Questions’ it’s everything from Autumn cooking, Barnaby Joyce and a little fashion - plus Caro reveals which senior Hollywood heart throb she’d rather go on a date with! Author Richard Flanagan is the ‘Crush of the Week’ and Corrie’s GLT is one for Scrabble tragic.  Email us - feedback@dontshootpod.com.au  Drop by our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/dontshootpod/ Follow the show on Twitter - @dontshootpod and check out 'Caro and Corrie' on Instagram.
