Summary: For the final episode before our hiatus, it is only fitting that Holly and Devin get to spend an hour gushing about one of their favorite middle grade series, Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend. Written by a queer Australian, these books bring middle grade fantasy into technicolor from black and white. With rich world building, a menagerie of friends, foes, and frights this series will make the hearts race for readers of any age. Reminder: Holly is a new mom! While she spends some time with her evolving family, we'll be taking a hiatus from the podcast through the summer and fall. As we have updates we will share them. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to review our back-log of episodes in the meantime. Topics Discussed: Series Summary (4:37): Morrigan Crow is a young girl born on Eventide, the unluckiest day of the year. Cursed to die on her eleventh birthday, she's blamed for every misfortune in her town and her parents dismiss her - her fate is sealed. However, when the day arrives she is whisked away by the enigmatic Jupiter North, who brings her to the secretive and magical city of Nevermoor. There, Morrigan learns of the Wundrous Society, an elite organization for those with extraordinary abilities. To gain entry, Morrigan must complete four trials - even when she's not sure what her own magical “knack” is… Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow Silverborn: The Mystery of Morrigan Crow (pub date June 24, 2025) Key Themes (13:28): Rich World Building with Complex Characters: Nevermoor is a vividly crafted city, teeming with magical elements, unique customs, and a diverse cast of characters, offering readers an immersive experience. Beyond Morrigan, the series boasts a range of well-developed characters, each with their own backstories and motivations, adding depth to the narrative. Identity and Self-Worth: Morrigan's journey is a profound exploration of self-identity. Branded as cursed and unworthy, she struggles with feelings of inadequacy. Through her experiences in Nevermoor and the trials she faces, Morrigan begins to redefine her sense of self, discovering her intrinsic value beyond societal labels. Belonging and Found Family: The series emphasizes the importance of finding one's place in the world. Morrigan's relationships with characters like Jupiter North and her fellow society members highlight themes of chosen family and the comfort of belonging, contrasting her earlier experiences of isolation. Prejudice and Acceptance: Morrigan's status through the series exposes her to fear and discrimination, reflecting broader themes of prejudice. Townsend uses Morrigan and other characters and plotlines to challenge characters and readers alike to confront biases and embrace understanding and acceptance. Courage and Resilience: Facing daunting trials and societal rejection, Morrigan's resilience is a central theme. Her determination to persevere, even when the odds are stacked against her, serves as an inspiring testament to inner strength. The Nature of Power and Authority: The series delves into the complexities of power, particularly through the lens of Morrigan's abilities. It poses questions about the ethical use of power and the responsibilities that come with it. Hot On the Shelf (28:00): Holly: With a Vengeance by Riley Sager Devin: Red Rising by Pierce Brown What's Making Our Hearts Race (32:43): Holly: Andor Season 2 Devin: Friendship with Holly

Jessica Townsend is the ridiculously talented author behind the middle grade fantasy series 'The Chronicles of Morrigan Crow'. The series began in 2017 with 'Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow'. Jessica followed up that record-breaking first instalment with 'Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow' and 'Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow'. Best of all, there are six more books on the way. Chapter 1: Jamila and Astrid dive into the books that first made them feel ‘grown up' and the ones that represented their shifts into adulthood. Regular listeners won't be surprised that Astrid says her coming of age read was Stephen King's 'It'. Jamila brings us back to the world of appropriate teenage reading by reminiscing about Melina Marchetta's 'Looking for Alibrandi'. Chapter 2: Jamila brings Chang Rae Lee's 'My Year Abroad' to the podcast, and she is more blunt than usual about a work of fiction. Chapter 3: And for the first time ever, Astrid recommends a rom-com - Naoise Dolan's 'Exciting Times' (Astrid assures us it is the thinking woman's rom-com). Recommendations: Two each this week! For adults, Jamila recommends 'Dreams from my Father' by Barack Obama. Jamila then refuses to take Astrid seriously when Astrid recommends Anne Rice's 1976 classic, 'Interview with the Vampire'. Both then make recommendations for middle grade readers - Jamila brings '45 and 47 Stella Street' by Elizabeth Honey, and Astrid brings 'The Chronicles of Morrigan Crow' series from Jessica Townsend. Thank you for putting together such a great podcast! I listen to it every week. I am writing because my boyfriend and I are both avid readers and we want to read something together. The problem is we read very different genres. He likes historical books and books about leadership. Some of his favorite books are Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and Think Again by Adam Grant. I like romance, fantasy, and literary fiction. I am open to reading nonfiction but it’s kind of hit and miss for me. I got an ARC of Miseducated by Brandon P. Fleming and I really liked that. I’d be open to reading a self-improvement book with him because I think that might fit the bill. Some of my absolute favorite books are The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin, Beach Read by Emily Henry, and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. Thank you! -Jessica 2. I am in desperate need of some book recommendations. I’m usually a really big reader, but I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately and am hoping that you can help me. Problem is, I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I’m a teenager, so YA, and I really enjoy cuddly romance (I don’t like pining so the sooner the couple gets together the better) but I don’t like books that have romance as the whole plot (also, the romance doesn’t have to be male/female). I also like 1920s detective stories, sci-fi with ensemble casts, Good Omens-type books, and epic questing stories. I only ask that: it’s not SUPER heavy/dark, there is minimal pining, it isn’t a comic or graphic novel, and it is something that will hold an average teen’s attention past the first few chapters. And has a snarky side character that isn’t a human. Thanks a million! -Quinn 3. Thanks for a great podcast! I graduated college six years ago and find that the friendships I formed then remain my most intense to this day. I’m in close touch with these friends, but, as an international student who moved back to Europe after finishing my degree, have seen some of them in person only once or twice after graduation and others not at all. The nostalgia for the days when I could just knock on their dorm room doors is real! Can you recommend books that capture the tight-knit nature of friendships formed during a formative period in one’s life in close quarters? Please nothing about friendships buckling under the stresses of adult life; as I say, we’re still close. I’m just looking for a comforting, intelligent read for moments when I particularly miss my friends. -Luisa 4. Hey y’all, I want to get my Dad a book for Father’s Day that we can both read and discuss. He can be a bit of an *old white man,* and I’m looking for something that casually centers a non-white, non-Western culture and preferably has some strong female characters. He primarily reads Jack Reacher-style thrillers and the occasional high/epic fantasy when it falls in his lap (generally of the LOTR variety, basically still just about problematic white male Europeans). The Poppy War by RF Kuang is closest thing I know of to what I’m looking for but I’m hoping to find something I haven’t read before. I hope that the book can generate some conversation/thought about social justice issues today, but please don’t make me talk about explicit sex stuff with my Dad… -Caroline 5. Hey Book Riot! I wonder if you have any recommendations for a non-fiction (or fiction?) book for LGBTQ+ community allies? As in… I want to be able to explain things better if I get into an argument with a conservatively thinking person. Thank you!

Morrigan Crow is terug in dit spannende derde deel van de internationaal succesvolle Nevermoor-serieUitgegeven door Luitingh SijthoffSpreker(s): Peggy Vrijens
Jessica Towsend is sometimes referred to as the “JK Rowling of Australia”...but it's no longer a name she relishes...more on that later. The first three books of her young adult Nevermoor series was sold for a six-figure sum, and the rights have been sold to 20th Century Fox. The series follows Morrigan Crow, who was born cursed - doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. She's forced to take part in near-impossible trials in order to join the Wundrous Society and escape her fate. The third book in the series, Hollowpox, has just been released, and she's been talking to Jack Tame about the release. LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE

Biotech, pharma, digital health inventors, researchers, entrepreneurs: Your inventions - your intellectual property (IP) - is at risk if you do not have a strategy for how you will protect it. IP protection is more than just patents. A comprehensive strategy - or even a relatively brief conversation with an IP expert attorney - is critical to ensuring you create value for yourself, your investors, and the marketplace. In this episode, Deborah Pollack-Milgate is both informative and inspirational. She and Steve discuss everything from how to protect IP to how to become a successful lawyer or other professional to how to inspire and promote women and minorities in the workplace. You don't want to miss this value-packed episode. Deborah Pollack-Milgate is a partner in the Barnes & Thornburg Indianapolis office. She concentrates her practice in patent litigation, trade secrets litigation, trademark litigation, and complex commercial litigation, including antitrust litigation, contract litigation and appellate matters. Ms. Pollack-Milgate has assisted and advised clients in a number of complex patent suits across multiple areas including: chemical products, digital radio, adhesives, healthcare, pest control, and insulation products. She has represented clients in appellate matters in the Indiana appellate courts and in federal courts of appeal, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Ms. Pollack-Milgate acts as outside in-house IP counsel for both national and international clients, assisting with virtually all aspects of Intellectual Property Portfolio management. She assists clients with putting systems in place, from the stage of invention to patent protection and enforcement, which will allow them to fully maximize the value of their intellectual property. During her time at Barnes & Thornburg, Ms. Pollack-Milgate spent an extended stay in Mannheim, Germany, where she worked for and advised an international client of the firm in U.S. litigation and patent matters. She routinely presents in the German language on patent matters, and is the author of BLIPs, a quarterly German-language IP newsletter. Ms. Pollack-Milgate has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America and Indiana Super Lawyers for several years and was recognized by The Best Lawyers in America as a 2018 Indianapolis “Lawyer of the Year” in patent litigation. She is also a member of the German-American Lawyers' Association (DAJV), the German American Chamber of Commerce, and the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property. She is a member of the Board of the Indiana Health Industry Forum (IHIF), and a founding member of the Indianapolis ChIPs Chapter, an international organization devoted to promoting women at the confluence of technology, law, and policy. She served on the board of Women & Hi-Tech for seven years and as president in 2013-2014.
