On July 14, 2023, the labor union SAG-AFTRA began a strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), joining the Writers Guild of America (WGA). This marks the second time since the 1960s that two Hollywood labor unions are striking simultaneously. First, we speak with Dominic Patten, Senior Editor for Deadline Hollywood, who discusses the latest on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the issues brought up by the unions, and the responses we've seen from the studios and producers. Then, we're joined by Art Wheaton, Director of Labor Studies at Cornell University's ILR School, and Dr. Miranda Banks, Associate Professor from Loyola Marymount University, to share their thoughts on the Hollywood labor strikes, and other labor disputes in what's being called the “Hot Labor Summer”. Plus, Orange is the New Black star Lea DeLaria, joins the conversation to discuss her participation in the SAG-AFTRA strike and thoughts on the issue of residual payments for actors. Guests: Dominic Patten Senior Editor, Deadline Hollywood Art Wheaton Director of Labor Studies, School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR), Cornell University Dr. Miranda Banks Associate Professor and Chair of Film, Television and Media Studies, Loyola Marymount University Author, The Writers: A History of American Screenwriters and Their Guild Lea DeLaria Actor, Comedian, and Jazz Singer Town Square with Ernie Manouse is a gathering space for the community to come together and discuss the day's most important and pressing issues. Superb Alto Saxophonist Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Now Christopher is gaining respect amongst fans, critics, and his peers as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the world. His 2012 debut album Quatuor de Force certainly establishes his ability to front a group and write his own soulful, melodically indelible tunes. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his recent album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B—with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley's post-bop sensuality–but his improvising is very rigorous and cogent. Starting his professional career in Chicago in 2007, Christopher has been in high demand around the world as a musician, composer, arranger, and educator. In addition, since moving to New York in 2013 his group The Whole Proof has played venues all over New York such as Smalls Jazz Club, Smoke Jazz Club, Ginny's Supper Club & Fat Cat. The musicians he has performed for stretches over many genres with artists such as Billy Preston, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Broom, Percy Gray, Roy Hargrove, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Guy Sebastian, Solange, Ne-Yo, Jennifer Hudson, Alice Smith, Brandon Flowers, Lea DeLaria, 88 Keys, Milton Mustafa, Winard Harper, and the Marquis Hill Blacktet. He now currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. In this episode, Christopher shares his background, education, and musical journey. Radio listeners have heard several of Brad's appearances on The Frank DeCaro Show and his work as a guest co-host on SiriusXM's Morning Jolt with Larry Flick. In front of tens of thousands of viewers in more than 30 countries around the world, Brad has performed on stage alongside Patti Lupone, Sutton Foster, Vanessa Williams, Kathy Griffin, Lea DeLaria, and Leslie Jordan since 2010. At Countermelody, this April Fool's Day begins with a dirty musical joke, and a great one! The episode continues with nearly a century's worth of performances of risqué songs, most but not all of them from musicals. Among the composers and lyricists, the great Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Brecht and Weill, Comden and Green, Carolyn Leigh, Alec Wilder, Stephen Sondheim, Bolcom and Weinstein, Fred Barton, the late Francesca Blumenthal, my friends Richard Pearson Thomas and Lawrence Rush, and the mysterious Durwood Douché. Among the performers, who really let their raunchy side out, Pearl Bailey, Eddie Cantor, Judy Holliday, Mabel Mercer, Gertrude Lawrence, Ann Miller, Vivienne Segal, Marlene Dietrich, Elisabeth Welch, Martha Wright, Raul Julia, Gertrude Niesen, Chita Rivera, Nina Hagen, Mary Martin, Julie Wilson, and Lea DeLaria, among many others. Fasten your seat belts: this is a long episode, but a beautifully down and dirty one! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. "An Exclusively Gay and Lesbian Bookstore for Chicago"Time travel with us to a very special place in episode four of Unboxing Queer History!Between 1988 and 1997, Carrie Barnett and Brett Shingledecker founded and ran People Like Us: Chicago's only exclusively LGBTQ bookstore, located just north of Belmont at 3321 N. Clark Street. The bookstore was unique at a time when many queer spaces were segregated into women's or men's spaces. Carrie and Brett did not separate lesbian and gay male literature, but instead shelved everything together by genre. Erotica was separated out, but otherwise the collection was integrated. This created an overlap; an interaction between two cultures that were often polarized even within the queer spectrum. Of course, People Like Us became much, much more than just a bookstore - it was a cultural center: an everyday anchor for Chicago's queer community, a tourist hotspot for queer visitors to Chicago, and a foundation for the development of queer literature by publishers. PLU even hosted an incredible number of queer legends and icons–polaroid photos from events show speakers from Alison Bechdel and Lea DeLaria to Rupert Kinnard, John Preston, Leslie Feinberg, Greg Louganis, Rita Mae Brown, and beyond.Listen in to learn more about this incredible space and to hear from Carrie, Brett, and patrons of People Like Us on why having an exclusively LGBTQ bookstore was so important for the Chicago LGBTQ community, as well as where to find that touchstone today. Unboxing Queer History is created by Ari Mejia, Jen Dentel, and Erin Bell. Produced by Ari Mejia with Hannah Viti. Artwork by Mere Montgomery & theme music by Danny Robles! Love, Simon (2018) premiered to mixed reviews from the queer community and critics alike. Supporters of the film (like Kevin's mother-in-law) praised the boldness of the first major studio-released gay teen romance, while its detractors criticized the film's aim at universality of a queer experience. This week, Jake and Kevin talk about where this movie hits and misses, particularly compared to one of its coming-out-predecessors, Edge of Seventeen (1998). This charming movie was written and directed by actual gay people and feels ahead of its time in dealing with the sensitivities of coming out. How did Love, Simon get things wrong that Edge of Seventeen got right 20 years earlier? Is everything Lea DeLaria touches gold? What the hell is going on at Simon's high school? Come speculate wildly with us! Our miniseries on our favorite cinematic sissies sails onward with a deep dive into Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
