Let's look back to a simpler time, when kids played outside until dark and phones were attached to the walls. Have you seen the movie Secretariat where the father says to his sons, “Get your devices off the table,?” The devices were their toy airplanes, that always cracks me up but it also is a reminder of how much things have changed. Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger reminds us of a less hurried time. He wrote from his hear masterfully weaving together a novel of historical fiction, matters of grief, coming of age (bildungsroman), and mystery. The story is told from Frank Drum's viewpoint as he, now a grown man, looks back to the summer when he was an unsettled kid of thirteen grappling with what manhood was all about in his mixed-up world. His younger brother, Jake, has a stuttering problem. He also has deep insight. He didn't fake things, he was the real deal. Ariel, their talented older sister, was soon to be on her way to Juliard. Their father, Nathan Drum, pastors 3 churches, ministers to his war buddy,Gus, and pours into the whole community. “My father and his great embracing heart.” On the other end of the caring spectrum we meet Ruth Drum, distant mom and wife, being a preacher's wife is not what she signed up for. Kruegar shows the after effects of WWII. “I think that it wasn't so much the war as what we took into the war. Whatever cracks were already there the war forced apart, and what we might otherwise have kept inside came spilling out.” The novel starts with an accidental death of a small boy then the boys find a homeless man who died of natural causes. Next, there's a suicide attempt and a murder! Not a book for youngsters, the content is heavy and the language is like that of sailors, but for readers that are ready it is a gift. We are shown the different ways people work through grief. “Hope was what my father held to. My mother chose despair.” “I (Frank)felt ______'s death had shoved me through a doorway into a world where I was a stranger.” Jake said, “If we put everything in Gods' hands, maybe we won't have to be afraid anymore.” Please join Kate and Sheila as they dive into the 1960s. Blessings to you, dear readers! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message

Reed Diamond.Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Reed Diamond. Reed is an actor who has appeared in so many films and television shows that I could spend all day naming. In this episode, we chat about when he decided to become an actor, why he went to the University of North Carolina, and how he got into the Julliard. Then we discuss some of the bands he was in growing up, and the hilarious names & antics that ensued; including making a drum set out of some very unusual items. Next we get into some of his acting credits, including: Dollhouse, Much Ado About Nothing, Homicide: Life On The Streets, and his newest series 'Orphan Black: Echoes'. Reed shares some wonderful stories about working and going to school with the great Andre Braugher, what it is like to be part of the Whedon-verse, and how much fun it is to get to work with his wife on the same show. Along the way; we talk about Reed's 'alter ego' while away at college, reasons to never believe Wikipedia, and how the universe finally revealed the REAL reason he learned to play guitar.

Instead of opening an investment account, Sophia comes home with a boxer- and we don't mean of the dog variety. Our next installment of MAYbe It's Horror is Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece: Robocop. Verhoeven had passed on this project until the intervention of his wife and Barbara Boyle encouraged him to look past a seemingly silly title. After reading the script, then dozens of Judge Dredd comics, Verhoeven dove into the film so deeply that he even ended up making a cameo (in the night club). On this episode, we feature director and friend, Price James, who will shamelessly admit this is his favorite film. Follow him on Instagram @fisherpricejames to see his upcoming projects, including a Barbie version of his Action Man: Battlefield Casualties ad. During our discussion, we talk about everything from Robocop's photo opportunity with Rudy Guliani (which sadly took place with the Boy Scouts and not in front of a landscaping business) to literary references in the film. If you know Jake, his obsession with Robocop is nearly as old as his fascination with dinosaurs. Well guess what? He even crowbars in a reference to Robocop: The Future of Law Enforcement issue 7 from Marvel, which published in 1990, depicting our favorite chrome-clad cop fighting cloned dinosaurs. The music was by Basil Poledouris. We discuss the nature of his work and how its satirical style almost becomes a character in this film and that of Starship Troopers, which Verhoeven also directed. Also, side note, did you know he did the music for Hot Shots! Part Deux? Stop-motion animation was done by Academy Award Winning effects designer, Phil Tippett. The actors were truly remarkable. Peter Weller plays Alex James Murphy, who is by no means an everyman, rather a what every man aspires to be. His foil, is Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker. He embodies slime and scum and everything you love to hate on celluloid. Nancy Allen, who many remember from her role in Carrie, is Anne Lewis, a tough, but tremendously lovable cop. Ronny Cox plays Dick Jones, who is just a nasty person. Imagine rubbing your poop hands in someone's hair after the horrors of 2020?! Last there is Miguel Ferrer as Bob Morton, the guy who gets the poop in the hair! Do you want to know how Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner conceived of the film? Details on filing in Texas? Budget? Costuming? Mime coaches?! Well, get in the car, because I usually drive when I'm breaking in a new partner. Oh, and as a lil extra sizzle for each of those seemingly rhetorical questions: on the set of Blade Runner, it was over budget and over 100 degrees, Rob Bottin designed it but was feuding with Verhoeven so badly that he stopped coming to set, and Juliard professor of movement, Moni Yakim (who just had a new documentary published about him: Creating a Character: The Moni Yakim Legacy). Patricia Mae Giraldo, better known as Pat Benatar, became one of the most prominent female rock stars when she made her debut in 1979. Her most successful studio album was this second album, Crimes of Passion, which would benefit from play on rock stations around the country and the new music video media spearheaded by MTV.Benatar had actually abandoned early dreams of a singing career, choosing to pursue health (actually sex education) at Stony Brook University, rather than music at Juliard. She dropped out of Stony Brook after a year, married Dennis Benatar, and worked as a bank teller in Virginia while he was stationed at Fort Lee. Her interest in singing was rekindled after attending a Liza Minnelli concert. She had some local success in Richmond and in New York where she and Dennis moved in the mid-70's, — but the real breakthrough would happen in Halloween 1977 when she performed in a spandex costume. Shortly thereafter she was signed by Chrysalis Records. She ended up divorcing Dennis Benatar thereafter, but would keep his last name as her professional name. While Pat Benatar achieved strong success on her debut album with the hit "Heartbreaker." Crimes of Passion would make Benatar a household name. The album would spend five consecutive weeks at number 2 on the album charts in January 1981, and would net Benatar a Grammy Award for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" of 1980. Pat Benatar would appear on the cover of the October 1980 issue of Rolling Stone along with her guitarist and future husband, Neil Giraldo. We think you will enjoy this excellent album. At least we will do our best to hit you with our best shot! Hit Me with Your Best ShotThis song is the second single off the album, but the biggest hit, and her first entry into the top 10. The song was written by Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer Eddie Schwartz, inspired by a therapy session he participated in that involved hitting pillows. This is a true rock anthem. Little ParadiseThis deeper cut leads off side two of the album, and was written by guitarist and soon-to-be husband of Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo. To us, it feels a little more like Ted Nugent or southern rock. You Better RunThe first single released from the album is a cover of a song originally performed by The Young Rascals. Although this song missed the top 40 (peaking at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100), it would become the second music video ever broadcast on MTV after the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star."Hell Is for ChildrenThis emotional song was written by Benatar, Giraldo, and bassist Roger Capps and is Neil Giraldo's favorite song. Pat Benatar was inspired to write this song by a series in New York about abused children. Later on Benatar and Giraldo would actually create foundation for abused children ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Cosmos”This popular PBS series premiered in September 1980, and would make Carl Sagan a household name. STAFF PICKS:“Introduction/Lola” by the KinksBrian's starts our staff picks off with a live version of the 1970's hit about an encounter between a young man and the cross-dressing Lola. In the song the guy meets Lola in Soho, London, but the inspiration was a result of Kinks manager Robert Wace spent an evening in Paris dancing with a cross-dresser. “Games Without Frontiers” by Peter GabrielWayne's staff pick takes its name from a European TV show, "Jeus Sans Frontieres" where people from different places would play games of skill while wearing strange costumes. The British version of this game show was called "It's a Knockout," and that title also makes it into the song. The song's lyrics are a commentary on war and negotiations between countries being like children on a playground. Kate Bush contributes backing vocals in this song.“The Legend of Wooley Swamp” by the Charlie Daniels BandBruce takes us on a spooky trip to the Wooley Swamp where the ghost of miser Lucious Clay torments the spirits of his killers, the Cable Boys. Today Wooley Swamp is the name of a farm campground and RV park near Raleigh.“Turn It On Again” by GenesisRob finishes off our staff picks with the first single off Genesis' album "Duke," written by band member Mike Rutherford. It is about a man who doesn't do anything but watch TV, and begins to think of the TV personalities as his friends. The song has a complex time signature, with much of the song in 13/8. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:"Dinorah, Dinorah" by George BensonWe're turning to a jazz instrumental by R&B and Jazz artist George Benson to finish off this week's podcast. It was off his 1980 album, "Give Me the Night."

Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week I had the great treat of meeting the Maestro Wynton Marsalis, managing and artistic director of Jazz @ Lincoln Center which he co-founded in 1987. He's produced more than 100 recordings, he's a nine-time Grammy Award winner, he's an internationally acclaimed musician, composer and bandleader, an educator and a leading advocate of American culture. Wynton has created and performed an expansive range of music from quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras and tap dance to ballet, expanding the vocabulary for jazz and classical music with a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers. He is a native of the birthplace of jazz, the New Orleans, Louisiana, which he left in 1979 to attend The Julliard School in New York City. He continues to call New York home but his reach is indeed global! He tells the Rabbi that he wants to be a Jew, but his Mom... Well, listen him to tell that story. He's vibrant, funny and lives his commitment to freeing others from the unseen prisons of past experience. Among his many talents--actor, singer, activist--one of his current passions is expanding the ranks of Black male entrepreneurs through his nonprofit, Global Eye Entrepreneurs. He's also Senior Vice President of Leadership Development for the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles...I guess I gave away the story's ending. Gamal's favorite songs: Wheels of a Dream from Ragtime and No One Is Alone from Into the Woods. Gamal's favorite words are from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar: Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, It seems to me most strange that men should fear... Also, taken from his Bio: Gamal Palmer is the Senior Vice President of Leadership Development at the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, overseeing several leadership programs and board and professional development for a 170-person staff. Palmer is also the Founder and CEO of Global Eye Entrepreneurs, a multicultural network for male entrepreneurs of color. Palmer designed and lectured the international programs at Yale University, Theater and Public Health in Swaziland and South Africa and Social Justice in Tanzania. Palmer earned his Post-Graduate Associate from Yale School of Management, M.FA. from Yale School of Drama and a B.A. from University of Miami. Palmer served as a Los Angeles Global Justice Fellow and delivered a TEDx Talk on the intersection of art and social impact. In 2018, Palmer was an International Career Advancement (ICAP Fellow) at the Aspen Institute. A native of Philadelphia, Palmer is the youngest of nine children and was highly influenced by his activist parentage. Sara dove into opera singing at 16, after her singing teacher recognized her talent. Following her lifelong dreams of performing on the big stage, she bucked the traditional route of "Juliard" and chose to go to a performing arts conservatory in Connecticut to study opera full time. Life as a professional opera singer is never straight-forward, or a straight-forward income - especially now as her entire industry is on hold indefinitely. As a multi-passionate person, Sara began to seriously pursue her obsession with antique diamonds, vintage and estate jewelry and turn it into a viable company. What started as a small side hustle is now becoming one of her two dual incomes, and has fortunately been able to employ a few fellow opera singers throughout the pandemic. Traveling back and forth across the US since 2017, alongside with her opera singing husband in their RV, has allowed Sara to source beautiful pieces of jewelry from estate sales and other rare finds. Songbird Sara (her jewelry company) is most known for "Divorce Rings" -- the concept of wearing a ring to honor of strength, empowerment, and a symbol of a bright future. The idea sparked after she left her own emotionally abusive marriage, and started wearing a ring to commemorate her new path. In addition to running her business and seeking her next opera performance -- she is both an ambassador and educational facilitator for One Love Foundation. This non-profit organization aims to teach young people about what is a healthy vs. un-healthy relationships. Sara incorporates opera storylines into her teaching material, as they represent unhealthy relationships and typically display 'bad' behavior examples. Sara and her husband Clay now travel around the US and Europe when they can, living their dream life and flirting with vintage hairstyles! This week's episode is about the bassist Henry Grimes. Grimes was a Juliard-trained musician, who took an interest in free jazz in the 1960's, who disappeared from the music world for three and a half decades. It features music from his early, conventional playing, from the peak of the free jazz movement, and music he made during his triumphant return in the 2000's. Questions? Comments? Oscar’s family made the move from Guatamala to America when he was still in diapers. His father a medical specialist Oscar was enrolled in private school but bad behavior got him explelled. He began to focus his energy on the arts both as an actor and as a musician. While in highschool he found success on his school stage as an actor but even more acclaim as the lead singer and guitarist for a ska-punk band known as the Blinking Underdogs – the even opened for Green Day. But Osar eventually had to decide if it were music or acting that he would pour his heart and soul into and an acceptance letter to Juliard in the Drama Division helped him make up his mind.

We get TWO scenes of them in bed together. #wet Also loving the legal foreplay Kevin and Moose and fooling around but Moose hasn’t come out yet, Moose finally tells his dad and they plan some bunker sex. (Cheryl advises new sheets which gross. Is there a laundry schedule?) Meanwhile the parents have been called together to play the game. But it turns out this was all a distraction to get to Moose and Kevin. V Scared. Reggie meets Gladys, and JB is an evil genius Hermione explains she needs {assuming 2 mil?} and Reggie/Veronica are going to get it, starting with the speakeasy. There isn’t enough but Reggie offers to rob his abusive father to get the money, ending up with a bullet graze and a bag of dyed money. Gladys and JB then head home to mind fuck FP and Jughead that they are home and happy but clearly this isn’t true. What is her end game? ALSO THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A VILLIAN! Where are they all sleeping, it’s a small house Toni voices her needs to her partner Toni feels like she lost her family. Cheryl promises to fix everything by forming a new girl gang the pretty poisons. Which is a dumb name but as you heard it here first - Was My Idea! Also why weren’t these girls in the Serpents? And why have we never seen them before because they are hot hot hot, like has Toni dated them before? Has Cheryl crushed on them? Josie gets some support and some kissing Josie’s auditioning to Juliard and needs a ride to Seaside, but Sweet Pea is tired of being a hot piece of ass. Melissa Dinwiddie is an amazing talent. It’s like everything she touches becomes beautiful. At 12 she was in adult-drawing classes. At 19 she was a dancer at Juliard. When she was 27 she was in galleries for her paper cut art and by 29 she had her own business making commissioned calligraphy and papercut art for clients all over the country. Now Melissa runs the Creative Sandbox. It's a community, a consulting agency, retreats, and playdays. But most of all it's a way of life where art is just art and creativity is (almost) always fun. Her work has been featured in The Huffington Post, Tiny Buddha, The Abundant Artist, Creative Pro, and Life Hack. Some things we talk about: abandoning drawing in 7th for not being “good enough” getting into Juiliard at 19 and dropping out at 20 starting her own business at 29, getting divorced, shutting her business down and starting over with The Creative Sandbox.
