The acclaimed horror novelist and Radio Free Albemuth playwright Lisa Morton joins the DickHeads for the final published science fiction novel we have to cover. Radio Free Albemuth is part autobiography, part VALIS mythology, and part rough draft. Most of all, it is pure PKD. Plus: Riffing on the Royal Portable. Fappers. Episode 2 of Season 3 and we are trucking along with all new guest stars. This week, we are so happy to have Sarah Langan join us for her choice of "So Long, London!" Sarah and Sam have been friends for a few years and have bonded over Taylor Swift many times over cocktails. What better guest to have on a podcast about Taylor Swift and cocktails? We take time to hear Sarah's Swiftie story and why "So Long, London" was Sarah's #1 song on Spotify last year. Thank you, Sarah (and Taylor), for sharing your vulnerabilities and speaking about the importance of recognizing your own strength within a struggling relationship. Taylor cuts deep with her lyrics in this song, and we are gratefeul she chose to share these intimate details about the downfall of her long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn. Another Track 5 in the books....what do you all think about this one? Be sure to leave your comments if listening on Spotify, or leave us a review on Apple Podcasts! Sarah Langan, author of "A Better World" and "Good Neighbors," talks about her new dystopian novel and its frightening similarities to our current real life. In Sarah's novel, our hero, Linda, doctor and mom, is initially thrilled to be accepted into Plymouth Valley, a safe refuge for her family from an outside crazy world, but too soon she discovers that there are disturbing dark elements to this so-called utopia. In this episode, Sarah and Jennifer discuss the novel and its plot and characters, Orson Welles' 1984, the horror genre, and writing in general. Want a great summer read? We have it. A Better Place by Sarah Langan is a page turning mystery/thriller….like if The Stepford Wives met Shirley Jackson in The Lottery. The story is original, the characters are well written, and the mysteries presented will baffle you as they unfold. It's a terrific ride. We also talk also talk to John Mendelson, president of Nosy Crow Books, an independent publishing house for kids, who took the entire bike trail laid out by our Massachusetts guests from last week at Whitelam Books. Sarah Langan discusses her novel A Better World..
This month, we discuss books with magic, our final prompt from the 2023 Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. Our picks include an anthology of witchy tales; a novel about the magic of sourdough starter, robot arms, and the human who works with both; and a YA fairytale set in contemporary times. If you're participating in Books & Bites Bingo, don't forget to turn in your bingo card throughout the month of December!Michael's PickThe anthology Hex Life: Wicked New Tales of Witchery, edited by Christopher Golden and Rachel Autumn Deering, contains 18 stories from authors like Sherrilyn Kenyon, Sarah Langan, Tananarive Due, Alma Katsu, and Kelley Armstrong. These stories of witchery range from cozy and humorous, to fantastical, to spooky and downright scary.Pairing: Channel your inner Audrey from the story “Bless Your Heart” and whip up a batch of Seven-Layer Magic Bars.Carrie's PickIn Robin Sloan's novel Sourdough, main character Lois is a young programmer who works at General Dexterity, a San Francisco tech company that programs robotic arms. Lois works so much, she sometimes sleeps at the office and drinks meal replacements instead of eating. But when two brothers give her their sourdough starter, a whole new world opens up to her, one filled with the magic inside a new community food market–including her own singing, possibly sinister starter.Pairing: San Francisco Sourdough from the book Super Sourdough by Great British Baking Show contestant James Morton.Jacqueline's PickThe Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black is an enchanting YA fairytale set in contemporary times. In this novel, Black returns to her dangerous, alluring world of faerie tales. This fantasy novel's complex worldbuilding is full of romance, terror, and adventure.Pairing: Old Fashioned Blackberry Pie, a recipe that will remind you of the magic that is childhood, when you could play all day, spending hours in the sun picking wild blackberries.

From Goodreads: Celeste Ng's enthralling dissection of suburbia meets Shirley Jackson's creeping dread in this propulsive literary noir, when a sudden tragedy exposes the depths of deception and damage in a Long Island suburb—pitting neighbor against neighbor and putting one family in terrible danger. Hello DickHeads. Here comes a strange one. A Maze of Death is PKD's 27th published novel and the only one so far with a foreword by the author and a table of contents. Both of which are more exciting than they initially sound. Maze is the story of 14 spacefaring adventurers, a strange walking tower, and a couple of new gods. Plus: Christians on PKD. Perspicaciousness. And the closest we've seen to a Voight-Kampff video game. In this episode of Postcards,three-time we have a very special guest the three time Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Good Neighbors. Langan was also one of the judges for the inaugural Shirley Jackson Award and is currently on the Board of Directors. She got her MFA in creative writing from Columbia University, and also received her Master’s in Environmental Health Science/Toxicology from New York University. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughters. In this wide-ranging interview, we chat about writing horror as a woman, dodging the sexist and misogynist tropes of the genre, the writing of her debut novel the Keeper, being put in writer jail despite numerous awards, and a deep dive into her new novel Good Neighbors. Good Neighbors resists tight genre distinction but if you really want to know what it is I would call it a horror social satire of suburban culture. Like a modern re-telling of the classic Twilight Zone episode, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street Langan updates the concept by replacing the cold with climate change. Laced with thriller elements this novel lends itself to a deep discussion as it is a fine work of social commentary. I suggest you read it first but there is still much to get from this novel. Would you carry a vaccine passport? Should we have to rely on corporate overlords to ensure our right to vote? Will you still watch “Bridgerton” even though Regé-Jean Page won’t be around? IS RE-WATCHING “GREY’S ANATOMY” A CRY FOR HELP???? We are joined this week by Hanna Rosin, who runs podcasts at New York Magazine, and Gillian B. White, managing editor at The Atlantic. Plus, Sarah Langan stops by to talk about her new book Good Neighbors, which we CAN’T RECOMMEND ENOUGH! AND, Margaret Lyons, TV critic for the New York Times, offers some suggestions for what to watch this spring.
Good Neighbors: A Novel by Sarah Langan Named by Goodreads as One of the Most Anticipated Mysteries and Thrillers of 2021 “A modern-day Crucible….Beneath the surface of a suburban utopia, madness lurks.” —Liv Constantine, bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish “A sinkhole opens on Maple Street, and gossip turns the suburban utopia toxic. A taut teachable moment about neighbors turning on neighbors.” —People “One of the creepiest, most unnerving deconstructions of American suburbia I've ever read. Langan cuts to the heart of upper middle class lives like a skilled surgeon.” —NPR Celeste Ng’s enthralling dissection of suburbia meets Shirley Jackson’s creeping dread in this propulsive literary noir, when a sudden tragedy exposes the depths of deception and damage in a Long Island suburb—pitting neighbor against neighbor and putting one family in terrible danger. Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world. But menace skulks beneath the surface of this exclusive enclave, making its residents prone to outrage. When the Wilde family moves in, they trigger their neighbors’ worst fears. Dad Arlo’s a gruff has-been rock star with track marks. Mom Gertie’s got a thick Brooklyn accent, with high heels and tube tops to match. Their weird kids cuss like sailors. They don’t fit with the way Maple Street sees itself. Though Maple Street’s Queen Bee, Rhea Schroeder—a lonely college professor repressing a dark past—welcomed Gertie and her family at first, relations went south during one spritzer-fueled summer evening, when the new best friends shared too much, too soon. By the time the story opens, the Wildes are outcasts. As tensions mount, a sinkhole opens in a nearby park, and Rhea’s daughter Shelly falls inside. The search for Shelly brings a shocking accusation against the Wildes. Suddenly, it is one mom’s word against the other’s in a court of public opinion that can end only in blood. A riveting and ruthless portrayal of American suburbia, Good Neighbors excavates the perils and betrayals of motherhood and friendships and the dangerous clash between social hierarchy, childhood trauma, and fear.

Let's face it -- this one doesn't require much explanation. This one is about as obvious as making a metric crapton of money adapting illustrated children's fantasy stories into major studio franchise tentpoles. And while you can rest assured in the knowledge that Judge Claire Mulkerin will spend the better part of ten minutes setting up the admittedly convoluted but undeniably cohesive narrative in which this week's battle takes place, you already know the real reasons. Marvel vs. DC. The superhero known as Captain Marvel vs. the superhero who used to be known as Captain Marvel. The boss of space vs. Magic Superman. Over a billion at the box office vs. unusually good reviews for a DCEU movie. Carol Danvers vs. Billy Batson. Let the unrelenting comic book bullshit commence. Sarah Langan makes her Smash Fiction debut and immediately proves that she belongs right here with all the other dinguses, while Miles, Bob, and Dan basically just grunt and make frustrated noises at one another. Will one of the many, many times somebody says "Shazam" manage to transform this comic book clusterfuck into a decent episode? Or will our audience drown alongside us in an endless sea of semantics, speculation, specific issue numbers, spelling corrections, and salty pickles?

As bee populations fall, Sheila Dillon asks if some salvation may be found in the mean streets of our cities. With a report from New York where bee keeping was actually illegal for a long time but where the honey festival now thrives. In London a young brewer tells us how she combined her love of brewing and beekeeping to produce an award winning honey ale. In Copenhagen we hear from a project with hives across the city - each producing its own distinctive taste and flavour, determined by the source of the nectar. Even the offices are alive with the hum of bees as Dan Saladino hears how the venture enlists the help of homeless people and asylum seekers, giving them confidence and and training in all aspects of beekeeping, honey production and sales. Meanwhile in Bristol are trying to find out if urban habitats really can provide a stable environment for our bees to flourish - can our overlooked scruffy verges and car parks contribute to the solution to one of our biggest ecological threats?Produced by Sarah Langan.

Sheila Halpern got her looks from her Momma, who died pushing her out. Died before, even, but still kept pushing. “You're the prettiest thing in the whole darn world,” her daddy told her the day he put her on the train for the St. Polycarp's Home for Happy Wanderers, his age-soft teeth all chipped so everything sounded muffled. She was eight years old, lice riddled, and 90% liar like her daddy. Narrated by Carrington MacDuffie.
Matthew Parris finds out why the actor Bill Paterson would nominate for Great Life status a Scottish actor little known outside Scotland. He is Leonard Maguire, who died in 1997 after a career which took in acting on stage, television, film and radio and included some wonderful writing - not bad going for a man who learned English as his third language as a child. The expert witness is Leonard Maguire's writer daughter, Susie. Produced by Christine Hall and Sarah Langan. First heard on Radio 4 in 2012.
This week's Great Life, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, hated being tagged as the father of pop art, yet his representations of images from popular culture came almost two decades before Warhol and Lichtenstein. Prolific and generous, his public sculptures populate many cities across the country, yet his name is not as well known as Moore, Hepworth or Gormley. The diversity of the forms that he worked in, and his reluctance to be packaged and promoted by agents, accounts at least partly for that. Paolozzi's personal story is no less complicated. Born in Edinburgh to Italian parents that sent him back to Fascist summer camp in Italy every year, all the men in his family, including the young Eduardo were interned when Mussolini declares war in 1940. Eduardo spent three months prison, but his father and grandfather met a far worse fate. Joining Matthew in the studio are two close friends of Paolozzi's. Nominating him is the restaurateur Antonio Carluccio, who remembers dining and cooking with Paolozzi, and marvelling at how his 'fatty sausage' fingers could produce artwork of such intricacy. Cultural historian, Professor Sir Christopher Frayling who taught with Paolozzi for many years also has many anecdotes to tell, and he and Matthew agree to differ on their appraisal of one of Paolozzi's most well known works; the mosaics at Tottenham Court Road tube station.
