Maryland-style rye came roaring back onto the scene over the past few years and one of the companies most closely associated with its resurgence is Sagamore Spirit. Founded in 2013 by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, Sagamore Spirit Distillery is in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland and has a history that is tied to champion thoroughbred horses and limestone-filtered water. Sounds a lot like Kentucky. Well, we're not in Kentucky anymore and this week we taste and review Sagamore Spirit Double Oaked Rye Whiskey. Coming in at 96.6 proof, this blend of straight rye whiskies is aged in secondary barrels for a whopping 18 months! Join us this week as we reflect on 125 episodes, talk about recent bourbon experiences, engage in some hydrometer antics, and offer our thoughts on this Maryland-style rye. Will it be "Happy Fryeday" or just another regular Friday? You'll have to listen to find out. Assistant Distiller Ted Wolfe and Sales Director Brett Bauer are on the show, and they're not here to just talk whiskey. Sagamore is launching a new Amaro. Ted explains the intricate process of developing the herbal liqueur, and Brett shares the market execution of launching the Amaro in a Black Manhattan campaign across the US. Ted also shares his experience of studying astrophysics to developing sustainable farming in Paraguay with the Peace Corps, then a decade working in storm water restoration, and finally, ending up in the distillery at Sagamore.Guests: Ted Wolfe & Brett BauerHosts: Jake Hukee Sagamore SpiritListen to more episodes and read stories at keyinthelake.comKey In The Lake

This week I'm solo, giving my rambling thoughts on both Barbie and Oppenheimer after my first view. These movies definitely require a watch as well as some folks to chat with so they will probably be revisted in greater detail another time. I just couldn't pass up making an episode about what I think is the Movie Event of the year. For two movies I decided to taste two great rye whiskies. Sagamore Spirit's Bottled in Bond batch 2 and 8 year old batch 2. They;re both really great ryes that you should try as soon as you get a chance. Cheers!
Cavan is out so the Rustic Renegade Caleb Morse is at the wheel as we continue Sagamore Spirit month with a sampling of Sagamore Spirit Rye. On the panel this week, Grant of W.S. Nacol, Rene of Piper's Haven and Dave of All Wood Furniture.

Season 5 of Drinks and a Movie is here! This week my very first guest on the show Lindsey joins me once again. This time we're discussing the controversial Samp Peckinpah masterpiece "Straw Dogs" starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George. We pour two exceptional bottles of rye whiskey from Sagamore Spirit. The Sherry Finish rye and the Palo Cortado sherry finish ryes. They're both some of the best ryes I've ever had and I cannot recommend them enough. Find them while they're still available. Cheers!
This is the newest release in their Reserve Series line for Spring 2023. Requiring careful aging and thoughtful blending, and this 8-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey embodies the power of both. After aging their rye in new charred American white oak barrels for at least 8 years, their distillers crafted this complex rye with notes of dried cherries, clove, and smoked vanilla on the nose. A perfect balance of sweet and spice, this rye whiskey has a bold palate with flavors of candied ginger, sweet orange, molasses, and nut brittle. This bottle had an original release in 2021 which earned a Gold Medal from the ASCOT Awards and a Double Gold from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
We recently had the opportunity to head out to Baltimore, MD to check out the Sagamore Spirit distillery. After touring the impressive facility, we sat down with President and co-founder Brian Treacy to get their story. In this episode, we talk about their devotion to Maryland, the farm that they source their proofing water and some of their rye from, and their ready-to-drink canned cocktails. We also learned about and sampled several of their amazing rye whiskies.Subscribe to our YouTube ChannelFollow Chris on Instagram Like us on Facebook! This week Matt and I discuss the legendary $7,000 independent action film "El Mariachi". Written and directed by Robert Rodriguez as a practice film to sell to the spanish video market it has become an icon in the low budget independent cinema world. It's been an inspiration to many people including Matt and myself and of course launched the carreer of Robert Rodriguez who would go on to direct Sin CIty, From Dusk Til Dawn, and much more, including turning the story of the Mariachi into a trilogy. If you haven't seen it we highly recommend. It's an amazing achievment considering the technical/financial disadvantages as well as working as a one man crew with non actors. For this one we try out the Sagamore Spirit Tequila Finished Rye whiskey as well as Sagamores flagship rye whiskey for comparison. It's a delicious whiskey that unfortunately isn't around anymore at this point but maybe they'll release it again some day. I recommend anything from sagamore spirit, it's ahrd to go wrong with their product. Cheers and than for listening.

This week Carissa joins me to discuss the 2019 Jayro Bustamante film "La Llorona". This film is more drama than horror but still has a great eerie atmosphere the whole time. it's an important movie that gives some insight into the brutal history of Guatemala. It follows the family of "an aging paranoid war criminal who, protected by his faithful wife, faces death while being haunted by the ghosts of his past." the drink of choice for this episode is the Sagamore SPirit Double Oaked Rye. One of the best available rye whiskeys on the market. I'm a big fan of just about everything sagamore spirit does. If you like rye whiskey then give this one a try.

Rye whiskey production had a historic past in the northeastern states, especially Pennsylvania and Maryland. And now Sagamore Spirit based in Baltimore is bringing rye whiskey back. Ryan and I traveled to record this interview with their CEO, Brian Tracey, and their Director of Operations, Ryan Norwood. We uncover Brian's unique past of how a phone call with Kevin Plank, the CEO of Under Armor, would take him from running a backpacking and kayaking company in Flagstaff Arizona to building a new distillery from the ground up. One of Brian's tasks was to find a distiller and that led to a few conversations with Ryan Norwood, a young guy who was really into yeast and beers. Sagamore had a longstanding relationship with MGP but now they have their own Maryland rye distillate and we talk about how they shaped and revitalized the Maryland rye category. Show Notes: Brian talk about how you go from ski bum to whiskey CEO? How did you cross paths with Under Armor CEO, Kevin Plank, and him ask you to become CEO? What did you know about the distilling business before starting? What did Kevin like about the distilling business? What was the initial vision? After you were convinced to start, who was the first call you made? When did Ryan Norwood come into the picture for distilling? Walk us through the differences be between brewing and distilling. What was is like working with Larry Ebersold to develop your Maryland style rye? Why do distilleries go with 95/5 rye? What was the process of figuring out how to scale and go beyond a 500 gallon pot still? Why only distill rye whiskey when bourbon is so popular? What does it mean to you when articles begin coming out without any affiliation to Under Armor? As a CEO, what are you trying to empower your people with? What was it about going down the path of finished whiskeys? Do you have any horror stories from working with barrel brokers on used barrels? Here's how we all came together to collaborate on Pursuit United Rye. @sagamorespirit @sagamorewhiskeybrian @smilesdavisjr Support this podcast on Patreon

In today's episode I sit down with Sagamore Spirit president Brian Treacy. First and foremost, Sagamore Spirit is making incredible whiskey. It's easy to see why their popularity is skyrocketing under Brian's leadership. They make great whiskey and have the right people in place to make the product worthwhile to buy, and would make consumers want to be repeat customers. I would highly suggest picking up a bottle of Sagamore Spirit. It's great whiskey at a really nice price point. Try the rye, and jump on the Double Oak if you get a chance. Then the cask strength. In today's episode I am reviewing two bottles from Sagamore Spirit out of Baltimore, MD. I've got their standard Rye as well as the double oak, and both are delicious. I will add, I have also tried the cask strength and Manhattan finish (both pictured here) and they are delicious, as well as the tequila finish which is also amazing. I am really impressed with these guys and the bottles they are putting out. I definitely suggest picking up a bottle or four.
