In this week's Hollywood Stories, Richard Rushfield sits down with TV comedy legend Nell Scovell — creator of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and writer for everything from The Simpsons to Late Night with David Letterman. Before breaking into TV, Scovell sharpened her voice at Spy and Vanity Fair, where editors Kurt Andersen and Graydon Carter taught her to “be funnier, go harder, be meaner.” She shares how she defied her agent to leave Vanity Fair and dive into the boys' club of TV writers rooms, a dynamic she was still battling decades later — even on The Muppets in the 2010s.She also opens up about her sharp, hilarious memoir Just the Funny Parts, which she jokes she really wanted to title, “Penis, Penis, Penis, Penis, Me, Penis.” (Scovell: "It would have sold more.") Richard calls it “one of the best memoirs of working in television I've ever read.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Many of us who love to grow tulips in our gardens have visiting deer who love to eat them. It seems to be such a violent death for a bud or flower. The poet E. J. Scovell, when she wrote the following poem in 1991, must not have had deer in her garden because she describes a more gradual demise. Here are some excerpts of her poem: I would, if I could, choose Age, and die outwards as a tulip does; Not as this iris drawing in, in-coiling Its complex strange taut inflorescence, willing Itself a bud again—though all achieved is No more than a clenched sadness, The tears of gum not flowing. I would choose the tulip's reckless way of going; Whose petals answer light, altering by fractions From closed to wide, from one through many perfections, Till wrecked, flamboyant, strayed beyond recall, Like flakes of fire they piecemeal fall. Most of us prefer tulips in a vase when they are closed or just partly open, rather than splayed outwards, wide open, just before the petals fall. Though perhaps, opening wide, is their last defiant gesture of farewell. This is Moya Andrews, and today we focused on the death of a flower.
Playwright Alice Scovell (The Rewards of Being Frank) discusses her new comedy Kindred Spirits, a sequel to Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit now having its world premiere at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (and featuring our own Austin Tichenor as Charles Condomine, whose late wives Elvira and Ruth return once again to stir up trouble). Scovell talks about how she gave Oscar Wilde's characters from The Importance of Being Earnest the seven-year-itch; how she's played around in the STU – the Shakespeare Theatrical Universe – through her sequel to Love's Labor's Lost; the challenges and rewards of negotiating with an author's estate; and how a life of theatergoing has led to a new life of theatre making. Today's guest is an innovative industry leader, who is responsible for leading Woodbine's investment strategy across all asset types. Please welcome to the show, Dupree Scovell! Dupree is the Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Woodbine Development Corporation, and he joins the host Dan Ryan to share his view on hospitality and how his journey brought him to where he is now. Takeaways: For Dupree, hospitality comes from a deep spiritual state. It is something that can extend to everyone in every aspect of our lives. It's not just something that you extend to someone staying in a guest room. In any industry, you will never be able to go without some sort of conflict at some point. Even when that happens, it's important to handle yourself by looking for common ground and make sure to avoid looking at it as a zero sum game. There are 5 core values that Dupree's company lives by; Relationships, Effort, Accountability, Conviction and Humility. At the end of the day, humility and relationships are the most important aspects for Dupree. When looking ahead for your company, you want to consider what you are building for and what the ultimate goal is in the end. It's not always about being the biggest company but sometimes it's about enduring as a company. If there is any sort of conflict within your company, you will end up going back to your values and those will help you determine the solution. For the future, Dupree takes a methodical and intentional approach rather than letting what others are worrying about get to him and affect his view. If Dupree could go back in time to talk to his younger self, he would give him the advice that his identity isn't just his grades or the sports he has played, but rather the person he is at his core. Writer Nell Scovell has worked for some of the best, most popular TV shows of the past 30 years. She wrote for David Letterman. She wrote for The Simpsons. She created the '90s show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. She wrote on NCIS. And at too many of those jobs, she was the only woman working in the writers’ room, countering Hollywood’s endless boys’ club. Scovell’s new memoir, Just the Funny Parts, is an excellent chronicle of her time in the TV trenches, as well as the times she’s branched out into writing books (she co-authored the massive bestseller Lean In with Sheryl Sandberg) and writing jokes for President Obama. Above all else, the book makes the argument that having more diversity in Hollywood writers' rooms will make movies and TV shows funnier. Scovell joins Todd for a frank and funny conversation about all those famous shows she’s worked on, her push for better representation of women behind the scenes in Hollywood, and her best Simpsons memories. Writer and comedian Nell Scovell talks with Recode's Kara Swisher about her new book, "Just the Funny Parts," in front of a live audience in San Francisco. Scovell, who has written on TV shows like "The Simpsons," "Murphy Brown" and "Coach," also co-wrote the hit book "Lean In" with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and tried to adapt it into a movie. She says producers tried to rework the story to fit what they considered to be successful films about women, like "Pretty Woman" and "Bridesmaids." Scovell also offers her theory for why the MeToo movement arose when it did — after Donald Trump was elected president, women had nothing left to lose — and talks about the experience of writing jokes for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Mark Zuckerberg. With more than thirty years of experience as a writer, producer, and director, Scovell knows how the entertainment industry works. She came to Hollywood as a bookish New Englander and worked her way up from a low-level writer for Newhart to a major contributor to shows including The Simpsons, Late Night with David Letterman, Murphy Brown, and NCIS and on to creator of the series Sabrina the Teenage Witch. While her roles have mainly been behind the scenes, Scovell has had several moments in the limelight. In 2009 she spoke out about gender bias on late-night TV writing staffs, and later she collaborated with Sheryl Sandberg on Lean In. In both cases Scovell helped spark a debate about diversity in a male-dominated work environment that her candid, wise, and very funny memoir continues. Scovell is in conversation with Alexandra Petri, Washington Post columnist.https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780062473486Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
TV writer and "Lean In" co-author Nell Scovell talks with Recode's Peter Kafka about her new book, "Just the Funny Parts ... And a Few Hard Truths About Sneaking Into the Hollywood Boys’ Club." Scovell says TV is hierarchical, meaning bad behavior at the top — including sexual harassment — trickles down to other employees. She also talks about what has changed since "Lean In" and what happened when she publicly criticized her former boss, David Letterman.
