In this week's Hollywood Stories, Richard Rushfield sits down with TV comedy legend Nell Scovell — creator of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and writer for everything from The Simpsons to Late Night with David Letterman. Before breaking into TV, Scovell sharpened her voice at Spy and Vanity Fair, where editors Kurt Andersen and Graydon Carter taught her to “be funnier, go harder, be meaner.” She shares how she defied her agent to leave Vanity Fair and dive into the boys' club of TV writers rooms, a dynamic she was still battling decades later — even on The Muppets in the 2010s.She also opens up about her sharp, hilarious memoir Just the Funny Parts, which she jokes she really wanted to title, “Penis, Penis, Penis, Penis, Me, Penis.” (Scovell: "It would have sold more.") Richard calls it “one of the best memoirs of working in television I've ever read.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

If we were playing television trivia and said "Sally Rogers" you would say "Rose Marie" -- this week's legend. But there was a whole lot more to Rose Marie than her role as a comedy writer on The Dick Van Dyke show. A child singing sensation, Rose Marie spent time on the vaudeville circuit, eventually making it to Broadway with a featured role in South Pacific. She frequently guested on early tv sitcoms before she landed the role of a lifetime and became part of television history along with Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Carl Reiner, and Richard Deacon. In particular, Rose Marie's Sally Rogers and Morey Amsterdam's Buddy Sorrell were fan favorites and appeared from time to time as a duo act. When Rose Marie died, Nell Scovell, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, said that Rose Marie's Sally Rogers was the "patron saint of female comedy writers." Not a bad way to be remembered! As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Rose Marie? Rose Marie got her start as a child singing sensation (known as Baby Rose Marie) -- and here is one of her hits. https://youtu.be/XGBqxkqAvMk?si=4yB0AhtS2YppRZfW Rose Marie landed a prime role in the Broadway production of Top Banana back in 1951 as well as the 1954 movie version. Here she is at a 1978 Johnny Mercer retrospective, singing her spotlight song from that show.https://youtu.be/NYWcwPMArXg?si=QyT0ebw4dZL_CC-2 Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam sometime reprised their Sally and Buddy act for live audiences including this fun spot on the Hollywood Palace. You even get Groucho Marx as the host. https://youtu.be/cQik0KEpgZY?si=Qn_SQ8hT2WHEZYIP Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam appeared together in a sweet episode of Caroline in the City in 1996. What are the different roles available within the insurance industry, and how might one transition from one type of role to another? What is the career advantage of participating in additional activities in the workplace? What educational steps do we need to take to alter misconceptions about our industry at an early stage? In this episode, we're very pleased to be speaking with Louise Clemments, Senior HR Business Partner at HDI Global Specialty. In conversation with Sandra Lewin, Louise discusses the nature of her role and how HR underpins the fundamental infrastructure of insurance businesses. She suggests that insurance is a uniquely advantageous industry to work in due to the versatility of the skills that you acquire, which are transferrable across a wide array of roles. Furthermore, she suggests that active participation in the additional activities available at your workplace, particularly in the early stages of your career, is instrumental to a healthy career progression.   Quote of the Episode “I'm very passionate about finding the right person for the job. And in the insurance market, we know there is a talent drain with not enough young diverse talent coming in, thinking about careers in this field. But rather than just sitting around complaining about this, I feel we all have a responsibility to make changes and spread the word about what an interesting and fulfilling career insurance can be.” For Louise, the onus is on everyone within the insurance industry to help to promote it to the general public. This is particularly essential on an educational basis. Insurance and the broader financial services remain male-dominated industries, with many girls dissuaded from considering such a career due to the prospect of being the only woman in the office. To alter this mindset, we need to have an educative presence in schools and universities, discussing the various benefits of working in our ever-evolving industry. Consequently, this year HDI launched an Early Careers Programme offering formal internships and apprenticeships. They have also partnered with an outreach provider to ensure that candidates come from socially diverse economic backgrounds. For Louise, it is key that we spread the word to people who may not have considered a career in financial services, who will have skills that can undoubtedly be transferred to insurance.   Key Takeaways For Louise, when onboarding new employees and retaining those employees, it is fundamental that we listen to them to understand what they want from their roles and their careers in the long-term. Similarly, we must be transparent about what we can offer as employers to facilitate those goals. Many people consider work culture to be a key factor in which roles they apply for, and a greater emphasis on this when advertising roles, clarifying how the business operates, may help substantially to boost insurance recruitment efforts. Louise suggests that the Great Resignation observed in recent years is proof that a ‘job for life' is not inevitable. She suggests that there is great value in trying lots of different roles in order to gain different types of exposure and experience. The insurance industry is particularly well-equipped for this kind of experimentation, with many types of roles requiring different skills on offer. For example, Louise herself works in HR, but there are various skills held by brokers or underwriters which could fluidly transfer to a role in this department. In HR, you are advising business leaders on strategy, so a general background in insurance would make you very well-placed to facilitate this kind of decision-making. In addition to her role in HR, Louise holds a book club at work which communes every four to five weeks, focusing on books with a business or leadership leaning. Engaging in such activities at work can have huge career advantages. Being present and volunteering for additional activities at work showcases your willingness to be involved with and contribute to the business to the senior people who make decisions about your career when you're not in the room. This type of visibility can be instrumental to your future career progression.   Best Moments/Key Quotes “I think it's quite an old-fashioned mentality to have a ‘job for life'. I think some of our European counterparts may still believe that to be true. But I think that one of the nice things, certainly in my career, is I've worked for small to medium sized firms, and the exposure you get, because you're having to do everything, you have fingers in many pies, is great.”   “There's a slight myth that the younger generation don't want to do things outside of their pay exclusively. We've actually found these are the individuals who do want to be good corporate citizens and make a difference.” ‘I would love to see more people going from insurance roles such as claims, underwriting, broking to transfer into HR because I think it will give you excellent grounding.'   “If you want to showcase yourself to other senior people who quite honestly make decisions about your career when you're not in the room, you have to you have to be present in those other aspects of the organisation that are not necessarily part of your day to day.”   Resources Empower Development – TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@empower.development Mindset by Carol Dweck Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Nell Scovell and Sheryl Sandberg Atomic Habits by James Clear   About the Guest Louise Clemments is the Senior HR Business Partner at HDI Global Specialty. “Writing is not what you start,” writes podcast guest Nell Scovell in her scathingly funny memoir Just the Funny Parts. “It's not even what you finish. It's what you start, finish, and put out there for the world to see.” Indeed, Nell offers this observation from a place of hard-won experience. A veteran television writer (“Newhart,” “The Simpsons,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” “Murphy Brown,” “Coach,” and on and on), Nell understands what it means to get an idea on its feet and out in front of an audience. As Sheryl Sandberg's collaborator on the #1 New York Times best-seller Lean In, she helped to create a guidepost for a generation of women looking for a shared compass point in their lives and careers—a book Nell says she wishes she'd read at twenty-five, as a woman working in the male-dominated field of television comedy, instead of helping to write at fifty-two. Join us as Nell reflects on a lifetime working in collaboration with some of the brightest (and least accommodating!) minds in television, on what it was like to write jokes for President Obama at the White House Correspondent's Dinner (“Obama, out!”), and on what it was like to be Spy magazine's first staff writer, and a contributor to Vanity Fair, Vogue, and The New York Times. ............................................................................................................................................... Merrill Markoe's storied career in comedy has included co-creating and serving as head writer for Late Night with David Letterman (earning her three of her four Emmys and giving the world "Stupid Pet Tricks" in the bargain), TV writing stints for Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Moonlighting, and Sex and the City, a Writers Guild Award for writing and performing on HBO's Not Necessarily the News, and even an acting gig on Friends. The versatile Markoe, who recently received the prestigious the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement, has also published much-loved collections of her comic essays and three hilarious novels-and her cartoons have been featured in The New Yorker. All of this Renaissance woman's considerable talents converge in her first ever graphic memoir, WE SAW SCENERY: The Early Diaries of Merrill Markoe (Publication Date: October 13, 2020; $24.95), which, with hindsight and wit, transforms the comedian's real-life adolescent journals into a laugh-out-loud work of art. "There are occupational hazards to being a writer," the grownup Markoe reflects. "In addition to the emotional mess that can come from writing about the people you love, there is the physical mess that accumulates from seeing everything as a potential topic. Usually I save things that strike me as funny, thinking maybe I'll write about them some day. At least that is the excuse I give myself for the weird stuff in the boxes of things I didn't get rid of because they make me laugh..It wasn't until the day that I decided to try and clean house that I found the little stack of childhood diaries I'd received as Christmas and birthday presents. They were lying way at the bottom of one of the biggest boxes. Each one came with a lock and key, because in the early sixties it was very important for preteen girls in suburban housing tracts to keep their dangerous secrets safe from prying enemy eyes." Those little tin keys unlocked a trove of now funny memories of events that, admittedly, didn't always seem funny to young Merrill at the time. Rereading the diaries, Markoe says, she often felt like she was reading about a stranger. But it also spurred a narrative of a childhood during what is often perceived as a simpler time, but was nonetheless fraught with family dysfunction, the angst of puberty and, ultimately, the first steps toward honing her singularly off-kilter talent. Markoe finds the hilarity in being a girl scout or running for 8th grade treasurer or first "love," even as she awkwardly navigates a daily reality controlled by a chronically angry suburban mother and shaped by the rapid social changes of the 1960s. With deadpan retrospection, she recounts honing her unique vision of the world through humor, even when her family made it feel as if she were doing something wrong. "Merrill Markoe got all the talent," says Nell Scovell, author of Just the Funny Parts. "WE SAW SCENERY is revealing, sad, funny, and above all, relatable. Markoe captures the experience of a young woman finding-and holding on to-her own voice. And we're all lucky she did." Mimi Pond, author of The Customer is Always Wrong, adds, "Merrill Markoe's visual and written analysis of her childhood diaries are acute, devastating, and hilarious." Today we want to talk about women supporting other women, in the office. We know that, sometimes, it can be HARD – women are people too, and people can get on your nerves! On top of that, we're genetically predisposed to compete for scarce resources (whether or not that scarcity really exists) and compare ourselves to others. That bleeds into every area of life, including the workplace. But remember: you can be the bulb in your organization that changes the color of all the other bulbs! (If that made no sense to you, check out S2E2!) Welcome to InspHERation Nation!   The Weekly Commitment Every week, we will ask you the same question: What is the one thing that you will commit to doing or improving this week? Writing down your answer to the question will start a self-accountability process, and following up with this practice after every episode will help you take consistent small actions that ultimately lead to BIG transformations. If you want to share what you are committing yourself to, we would love to hear! You can get in touch with us at... contact@InspherationPodcast.com Facebook Twitter (@inspHERationpod) Instagram (@inspherationpodcast)   Three Key Takeaways: Find another woman to mentor. Or, if you don't have a mentor yourself, the first step might be to find someone to mentor you (and it doesn't have to be a woman) because having a mentor will teach you the skills you need to mentor others. There's always someone else who can benefit from what you've learned, and you can help them and build them up. If that makes them more successful, then they are going to mentor others and you're going to start this wildfire of women building other women up. When you're in a mentorship role (or being mentored), you are spreading positivity; you are building someone else up or they are building you up, and that's a tribe! So take the time to get to know the women in your office and make yourself known as the person they can turn to to be there or trust. Stick up for other women at work when you see them being put down or being thrown under the bus. This is hard, but it's important to show that this type of behavior isn't acceptable, in front of others.   Resources: inspherationpodcast.com Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Nell Scovell and Sheryl Sandberg   The inspHERation Podcast is produced by Podcast Masters

Skylight Books Author Reading Series

Death by Sunshine (Writers Tribe Books) Novelist Allison Burnett (Christopher, The House Beautiful) visits Skylight to read and sign the third and final book in his B. K. Troop series, Death by Sunshine. "Like Truman Capote, Allison Burnett knows how to pull up a chair and whisper a juicy story into his lucky reader's ear. Death By Sunshine is a quickly paced tale inhabited by fascinating and funny creatures." --Nell Scovell, Vanity Fair "In this age when the genuine comic novel seems to be an extinct species, Allison Burnett gives us reason to rejoice. Death By Sunshine is a return trip to the world of B.K. Troop, one of the most appealing characters ever put on a page." --Charles Busch, author of The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Die, Mommie, Die! "Death by Sunshine is classic Burnett: hilarious, gut-wrenching, and entirely entertaining. He takes us on a journey across the country into the darkest recesses of the human psyche - with a few detours into the excesses of the human flesh along the way. A terrific read!" --Claire LaZebnik, author of Epic Fail and Families and Other Non-Returnable Gifts Allison Burnett's first novel, Christopher, was a finalist for the 2004 PEN Center USA Literary Award in Fiction. His second novel, The House Beautiful, was published in October 2006. His third novel, Undiscovered Gyrl, was published by Vintage Books in October 2009. His new novel, set in Los Angeles, is Death By Sunshine. Allison also works in film, having written and directed the 1997 feature film, Red Meat, as well as written or co-written a dozen films, including Autumn in New York, Resurrecting the Champ, The Feast of Love, Underworld Awakening, and Gone.
