On this episode of That Remote Show, I am joined by Sean Ogle from Location Rebel. Sean has been an anchor in the location independent movement for close to a decade after he quit his job in finance and moved to Thailand just 2 months later to build his online business. Since then he has built one of the largest communities of digital nomad entrepreneurs at Location Rebel and has helped thousands of people start an online business. During the interview we got to talk about why Sean quit his job and how another friend of the pod Dan Andrews of Tropical MBA gave him his first online job. We also talked about how Sean popularized Location Rebel and found his first paying customers, how he started his next 6 figure site Breaking Eighty, how you can start a 6-figure hobby site yourself, and why uncertainty can be an entrepreneur's best friend.
Come on baby, light my business fire! (The Doors. Nailed it). Matt and Andrew are joined by Brandon from MadFientist.com to talk about staying motivated in their online businesses. Brandon shares his journey of growing his own successful site (including the mental breakdown that motivated him to launch it) and chats about his newest online business, including the challenge of mixing business with a hobby. The three of them debate what truly motivates them in their work (hint: it's not money, but it kind of is?) and how to keep that hunger alive when you start to feel like you're coasting in your business. How do you tap into that intrinsic motivation to keep the business fires burning bright? This is an honest, behind-the-scenes chat about what drives these guys to do what they do. Enjoy! P.S. You can read about Brandon's synthesizer business experiment here: Madfientist.com/Online-Business-Experiment P.P.S. Liked this episode? Favorite Success Quote “Comparison is the thief of joy” ~Theodore Roosevelt Key Points 1. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others One of the most pervasive problems in our hyper “connected” society is the prevalence of the comparison mindset. No matter how great you are doing in your business, health, and relationships, someone is always doing better, and after 30-seconds of surfing through Instagram you are immediately reminded that you are not the biggest fish in the pond. But guess what? It’s ok. Every single person is on their own unique journey to success. We all have our own path to chart and our own roads to travel. And comparing yourself to others (whose story and struggle you are completely unaware of) is the fastest way to sabotage your own success and happiness. It is one thing to aspire to a certain level of success. It is another thing entirely to degrade your own journey and achievement by comparing yourself to other people who had an entirely different set of skills and advantages when they entered the game. Cut out the comparison and you will cut out a vast majority of your unhappiness. 2. Start with the Basics So often whenever people are getting started on their journey to freedom and location independence, they want to focus on the sexy businesses. They want the six figure membership site, the 7-figure ecommerce store, and the high ticket coaching and consulting gigs. But what most people don’t realize is that these types of businesses require an incredible level of skill and knowledge to build. You need to start with the unattractive basics first. Select a skill like SEO, copywriting, or web design. Become extremely proficient in that skill until you can make a full time living as a freelancer. Then, once you have the bills paid for and the ability to work from anywhere in the world, start applying those skills to your own “Freedom Business.” Without the basics, you will fail at creating the “sexy” business every single time. 3. Consistency is the Key to Success True success comes from one thing. Consistency. It doesn’t matter whether you devote 2 hours a day or 20 hours a day. As long as you are doing something to grow your skillset or business every single day, you will achieve success in a relatively short amount of time. By making a 2-hour daily commitment over the next 18 months, you can quit your job, travel the world, and make more income than you ever thought possible. But it requires consistency. You can’t just work 80 hours on your freedom business one week, and then forget about it for three months. You need to lay the foundation every single day and keep piling up those bricks until you reach the level of success that you desire. 4. Focus on Vulnerability, Not Perfection One of the biggest road blocks that most entrepreneurs come across is that they are striving for perfection. Perfection in their content creation, perfection in their product creation, and perfection in every aspect of business execution. This is a mistake. The world responds to vulnerability, not meticulously written articles that require a month of editing. Be raw, be real, tell people what is really going on. The more vulnerable you are, the more people will be able to relate with you and the more of an impact you will be able to have. Don’t try to be perfect. Just be real and the results will come. 5. Realize that Uncertainty is the Greatest Killer of Dreams “People will choose unhappiness over uncertainty” ~Tim Ferriss People are scared of the unknown. It’s just how we are wired. We are terrified of the “ifs” surrounding our lives. What if she rejects me? What if this business fails? What if I lose it all? But what people forget is that 9 times out of ten, the worst case scenario, the “if” that we are so scared of is extremely unlikely. And even if it happens, it’s almost never as bad as people think it will be. So what if you start a business and it fails. You can lick your wounds and return to the corporate world or you can start over and try again. But if you succeed, you will have a life that you can only imagine right now. So what if that hot girl rejects you? Odds are she will let you down gently and you will still be the only guy in your social circle with the balls to talk to her. And best case is that she is amazing and you end up in a happy fulfilled relationship. With most uncertainty in life, there is a disproportionate reward to risk ratio. Meaning that whatever you are scared of and uncertain about will typically result in a small potential loss, but has the potential for massive long term gain.

Hi there, Daniel here! And today's episode we talk about Lifestyle Business and how to start one with our special guest Sean Ogle from locationrebel.com Sean is a long time Lifestyle Entrepreneur and he shares how he started his Lifestyle Business and how you can too! So, here it is! Podcast with Sean Ogle Daniel: Today, I have a very special guest. I am really excited to have him here with us. I am here with Sean Ogle, the owner, and operator of locationrebel.com, and he mainly helps people to build small lifestyle businesses that give you the freedom and flexibility to work from anywhere in the world. Sean has been featured in different places around the web, like Forbes, Entrepreneur on Fire, Huffington Post, the Self Made Man and many more. So, let's continue our conversation about freedom lifestyle with Sean and his approach on lifestyle entrepreneurship so you can live a life with more flexibility, freedom, and of course with passive income. Sean, welcome to the show! Sean: Thanks for inviting me, man. I'm excited to be here. Daniel: I’m very happy to have you, Sean. Would you, please, take a few minutes and tell us a little bit more about you, share a little of your story if you could? Sean: Yeah. So, I had the most average American middle-class upbringing imaginable. You kind of always knew what was next, you always kind of followed the path of least resistance a little bit. Like, when I was in sixth grade, I knew that I was going to go to Oregon State University, I was going to study finance, I was going to live in the dorms with my best friend, which is what ended up happening. Six months before I graduated college, I had a job lined up in Portland Oregon, working as a financial analyst, so it was always just kind of like the path of least resistance. You just kind of followed what was next in the plan, and it was very much kind of American dream. 2.5 kids, white picket fence, like that was the path that things were going down. And unfortunately, I graduated in July of 2007, so obviously, most of us remember that was the peak of the market, that was a terrible time to get into the financial world. And so by February of 2009, the market had completely crashed, the company that I was working for, they weren't doing very well, their clients weren't doing very well, my boss was unhappy, I was unhappy. So what I ended up doing was, I had saved up all of my vacation time for that year, to take a two and a half week trip down to Rio with one of my best friends. And so we went down there, had the absolute time in our lives. We went to Iguazu Falls, one of the seven natural wonders in the world, we went hang gliding over Rio, we danced in the carnival parade. And there's like 8-foot tall ridiculous costumes. And basically, it was kind of on that trip I realized that I should be able to do stuff like this whenever I wanted. I was going to go back to a job in Portland with miserable weather, have no vacation days left, and I wasn't getting closer to either of the two goals I had set for myself when I graduated college, which were to travel the world and to own my own business. To make matters worse, the day I got back from that trip, my boss told me that he was giving me a 20% pay cut and if the whole company was taking a 20% pay cut because of the financial situation, so that kind of was the impetus to make a change. And a couple months later, I started Location Rebel as a way to hold myself accountable to do all the things that I wanted to do in life, and that kind of set the scene for everything that's happened over the last eight years. Daniel: Wow, that's amazing, Sean. And that's awesome actually, you came back, and probably what somebody will think that is the worst news ever, that your salary is cut like 25%. Sean: Yes, 20%. Daniel: Imagine that you come back from the trip after spending I guess a lot of money on your trip, and then you come back and you have a pay cut.
Today I sat down in Portland with Sean Ogle of Location Rebel. Sean has been helping people build their side hustles, quit their jobs and become location independent since 2009. Sean was one of the first influences in my life that made me think I could do something other than sit in my parent's basement and wish I could do something impossible with my life. We even went to Jordan together back in 2012. In this episode, we talk about his story, how he got started, plus some of his own personal struggles and where he sees opportunity for new businesses in 2018. Sean Ogle of Location Rebel is an OG digital nomad blogger. I remember discovering his blog back in 2013 when my dream started. He's traveled all over the world and created multiple online businesses. In this interview, he shares his top suggestion for how new entrepreneurs can get into the online game / remote working / digital nomad hustle in 2018.
This week’s podcast is a special one. Not just because it is our 50th episode, which by the way thank you to everyone who has been listening to the show. The support we have received so far has been incredible, and we could not be more appreciative to all our listeners! It’s because we have Sean Ogle, founder of Location Rebel and Breaking Eighty, joining us. I could not think of a better guest to have on to celebrate this landmark. Sean was hands down one of the biggest inspirations to me when starting G&E Magazine. When our growing media company was just a domain, I stumbled across his site Location Rebel. On the blog, Sean documented his successful journey from being unhappy at his job, to starting his own online business that allowed him to work anywhere in the world. The life he lived was remarkable, and the below video was the icing on the cake. I just had to get started. Since coming across Location Rebel a few years back, I discovered that Sean also had a growing presence in the golf community around his stellar blog and Instagram account, Breaking Eighty. The blog was focused on his pursuit to shoot that coveted 79 while playing the top 100 courses in the world. And since then, he has turned the brand into another growing online business and community. For anyone who wants to play more golf, travel the world, and work from their laptop, this one is for you. A big thank you to Sean for coming on the podcast, and I hope you all enjoy our conversation about how he started his first online business, his life with golf, advice for people who want to do the same, and so much more.
Sean Ogle is a Location Rebel. He’s also a bucket lister, avid golfer, and cocktail connoisseur. He’s traveled the world to pursue his work and passions, making him a perfect guest for Pubcast Worldwide. In 2009, Sean created Location Rebel, a set of resources and online community aimed at helping people build relevant skills for creating an online business that will allow them to adopt a location independent lifestyle. In this episode, we explore what it means to be location independent, tips for creating an online business, and Sean’s personal story of quitting his job, moving to Thailand, and ultimately creating Location Rebel. We met up at Pope House Bourbon Lounge in Sean’s hometown of Portland, OR for our interview. As the cocktails start to flow, Sean and I jump into some other conversations, including Sean’s love of Scotch and golf, his quest to visit the top 50 bars in the world, and his new site Hobby Hacking that teaches people how to turn their passion into a business. After you listen, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!

Sean Ogle shows us how he runs his business from beaches to balconies from around the world.
“At the end of life, the person who wins is the one with the most stories.” This one sentence perfectly encapsulates Sean Ogle's attitude to life and business. He's an adventurous and relatable entrepreneur, who has created a strong community and a portfolio full of travel and epic narratives. Sean started his entrepreneurial journey after an eye-opening trip to Carnival in Rio de Janero. Upon his return to the States he decided to leave his 9-5 job as an analyst and hasn't looked back. His genuinity and curiosity led him to befriend Chris Guillebeau of the Art of Non-Conformity Blog, early on. Chris recommended that Sean start his own blog, not for the writing necessarily, but as a means to make his goals public and to add some accountability, kicking him into action. Sean credits his willingness to connect with those he respects as a great precursor to his success. He gives lots of great advice on how to do this: Be genuine in your communications. Follow their advice then tell them about the success you had by doing so. Get in touch and go one step further than others would by sending them a personal physical hand-written letter. Find their address by getting on their email list and sending it to the address at the bottom. Genius! Sean developed a three-step process for creating a location independent life after unintentionally going through it himself in the first two years of building his successful blog, Location Rebel. He credits this process as the key to his success: Learn relevant skills – SEO, copywriting, social media for business, WordPress and design fundamentals. Practice these skills as much as possible. Freelance work – Put your newly found skills to work helping somebody else. Apply the skills in your own biz– Create your own projects that utilize the skills you've learned. He decided to put this strategy to use by creating Location Rebel, a course and community for growing a location independent business. His goal is to get all of his members making $100/day. When you're making this much you have something to work with and build upon. One of the funnest things about Sean is his ability to accomplish so much and still find time to do many of his favorite hobbies and activities. He would say that in actuality, he doesn't find the time--he makes the time--as this is what energizes him. He credits doing fun things on a regular basis as helping him overcome resistance to doing work. He's also consistently putting in at least two hours a day of solid work. It might not sound like much, but when you're consistent about it, you can accomplish a heck of a lot. Putting in consistent work like this is a big part of his success, but Sean also credits his relationship to uncertainty and how he's learned to overcome it. According to Sean, there are three phases of uncertainty: Fearing Uncertainty – fearing uncertainty causes people to not do the things they really want to in life and avoid risking their “comfortable life” Overcome the Uncertainty – when people are scared but doing it anyway because they trust that the outcome will be positive. Embrace the Uncertainty – this is where most successful entrepreneurs lie. “Because I have no idea what's going to happen in the future, I can create any future that I want.” To Sean, being bold means embracing uncertainty. “If you can embrace the challenge and embrace the unknown then that's about as bold as you can be.” SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: Who inspired Sean to start writing? What was the catalyst for his blog Location 180? What new products is Sean working on? What are some of the lucrative decisions made due to the mastermind that he's involved in? How does Sean get work done and consistently overcome resistance? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: Which influencers and thought leaders has Sean connected with and how he does it. How Sean is putting ‘The ONE Thing' to use in his business Some great tips for webinar conversions Which areas he's undisciplined in and how he gets around this The habits and beliefs that Sean credits for much of his success Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Learn more about Sean: Website | Instagram | Twitter Location Rebel: Website Location 180: YouTube “A Secret to Business Success” Vlog: View Sean's Quest to play the top 100 golf courses in the world, Breaking Eighty: Website ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Chris Guillebeau and the Art of Non-Conformity: Blog Taylor Pierson from Episode 2 of The Bold Life Movement: Listen ‘The One Thing' by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan

He went to high school and college and before he graduated college from Oregon State University in 2007 with a degree in finance, he had already gotten a job as a financial analyst. He had a fantastic time during his 4 years in school, but Sean couldn’t help but feel that he wasn’t prepared for his real life and he wanted to learn more tangible skills that he thought he needed to be successful after graduation. This led him to a job as a financial analyst that he quickly found wasn’t for him. He had no free time. He was working 50 hours a week, wearing a suit and tie, and not having any of the flexibility to do the things that excites him. Sean Ogle said that it all began on a trip to Brazil in 2009. He’d saved up all of his vacation time to head down to Rio for Carnival with one of his best friends. It was the last day of his trip and he was walking down Copacabana Beach with a coconut in his hand and all he could think was “I should be able to do this whenever I want.” Over the next 6 months Sean started Location 180, sold his car, left his job, started a business and then in January of the following year he moved to Thailand. Location 180 is all about doing the stuff you really want to be doing in life. He specifically talks a lot about travel and entrepreneurship, and how it can be a great vehicle for reaching your goals. Sean’s primary business is his community Location Rebel – but he has a half a dozen other small businesses built around various interests of his. Location 180 and Location Rebel. 3:46 Sean noticed there really wasn’t a good community for people looking to build a location independent business. So he created Location Rebel with the idea that he wanted a premium offering, where if someone was willing to invest in themselves and work hard – there would be no reason why they wouldn’t be able to build a successful business. Nearly 3 years later Sean has over 600 members, and a large chunk of them have left their jobs and are doing things on their own terms. One of the biggest surprises about this process has been just how diverse the group of people they have is. It’s comprised of pepole from 20 year old college students who don’t want to go into the corporate world, to 45 year old single moms, and 63 year old retirees. Sean says that anyone can build this type of business, if the desire to do it is there. Fear of Uncertainty. 10:32 Sean said after he lost his job he was uncertain of what will happen next to his life. He was uncertain how to pay his rent and his bills, and he was also uncertain if he could still get a good job. But he realized that the uncertainty that he had was also his motivation to make certain things happen. And that is the mindset the entrepreneur has to have in order to be successful. The Secret of his success: 15:01 Sean gives tutorials to people who went through his situation. He helped people figure out how to make this lifestyle work for themselves. He also gives inspiration to people on how to do different things to build their business. He said the most important points to consider in order to succeed is how to build community online. Sean has helped dozens of people quit their jobs and build successful online businesses over the past year. Sean’s greatest success is the fact that he built a business that allows him to do what he wants, when he wants. He still have to pinch himself on a regular basis! There are the more superficial successes like building a 6-figure business, or a big email list. But frankly, it’s the fact that Sean built something that has helped both himself and hundreds of other people achieve a life that they’re actually excited about, that I think is the most important. Walking through his book Location Rebel 16:11 Sean Ogle said that everyone is different, but they usually have variations of the same problem: they aren’t happy doing what they’re doing and want to change. The most successful people he work with have without fail have followed the 3 step process: 1) Build relevant skills – WordPress, SEO, Copywriting, Social media. Start a blog and get familiar with all of these things. 2) Freelance one of these skills – This builds income and confidence. Once you have those two things, it gets much easier to start a business that’s a bit sexier like e-commerce, apps, info products, etc. 3) Apply these skills to your own projects: Most people start with this step, and that’s why the fail – they don’t have the proper groundwork laid out to be successful. Best Advice: 43:43 Sean said, “Start a blog and find a group that has the same interests with you. Even if you’re working on your own, you’ll be facing an uphill battle if you don’t have a few people to turn to for support. “ Links: Sean Ogle’s Books: Location 180 Location Rebel Official Website: http://www.seanogle.com/ Twitter: Sean Ogle LinkedIn: Sean Ogle
"More people will choose unhappiness to uncertainty." - Tim Ferris In the world of living and working anywhere, Sean Ogle is top of mind. He’s also one of the most eloquent teachers on the topic. 5 years ago in 2009, after being laid off, he launched Location 180, to explore what it meant to be location independent - to fold travel into his life in a greater capacity. Today he hones in on exactly what it takes to create a location independent lifestyle, whatever that means for you. For me, it means one that fosters a life of travel. I’m psyched to bring him on the show to discuss his travels, what happened that inspired him to pursue a life of travel, and how he not only believes but also helps others create location independent lifestyles for themselves. Now, whatever that means for you — maybe you want to start a business, or maybe not — maybe you just want to hear his travel stories — entrepreneurship may not be for everyone, but travel in whatever form, should be. Today we ask the question: do you think it’s likely that you’ll have $1,000,000 in your personal bank account in 5 years?
