Albo's Housing Hypocrisy

Australia is struggling with a number of crisis situations – a cost-of-living crisis, a housing affordability crisis and a rental shortage crisis. Our beloved Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared on many occasions how much he cares about the plight of ordinary Australians in dealing with these issues. But, as the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words – and that is particularly relevant to our elected representatives who love to stand before the media cameras and declare their concern for the people but fail to match their words with appropriate actions. So, let's look at how the Prime Minister has handled his personal housing market issues in 2024. In May this year Albanese evicted a long-standing tenant in a property he owned in the Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill. At the time, the tenant declared he was shocked to learn he no longer had a place to live and had no idea he was going to be kicked out of his home of four years. At the time the tenant said he had tried to seek clarification of the situation and why he had to leave but did not receive a response. He said at the time: “It seems a little bit misaligned with the messaging Labor has been putting out ... about recognising how difficult it is for renters.” He also said: “It's a crippling blow for me right now. I have mixed emotions in calling this out. I voted for Albo at the last election and am broadly a supporter of his policies.” So, PM Albanese, having got rid of the pesky tenant, then put the Dulwich Hill property on the market, with an auction scheduled for October. This was a three-bedroom townhouse at 29B Lewisham St in Dulwich Hill which Albanese bought for $1.17 million in 2015 and was advertising for auction with a price guide of $1.9 million. If it sold at that price, it would represent a 62% gain in nine years. But then, at the last minute, the Prime Minister cancelled the auction and decided not to sell the property after all. He evicted his tenant because he said he wanted to sell and then decided NOT to sell. Then, in the same week, it was revealed he had spent $4.3 million on a new home on the Central Coast north of Sydney. This is Albo the battler we're talking about, the guy who loves to talk about his tough working-class roots and growing up in a housing commission environment. Albanese said he planned initially on leasing out the property with views over Copacabana Beach, with estimates he will pocket between $2000 and $2500 a week in rental income. A Labor MP, who declined to be named, said the purchase was “not a great look” for Albanese, who will have to fight hard to hold on to government at the next federal election. Responding to claims the purchase was a bad look in a cost-of-living crisis and a housing market crisis, Albanese, who earns more than $600,000 a year, said he knew “what it is like to struggle”, referring to his upbringing in public housing in Sydney's Camperdown. “I am much better off as Prime Minister. I earn a good income. I understand that,” he said. Columnist Dennis Shanahan wrote in The Australian: “There are two unequivocal things to say about Anthony Albanese's decision to buy a $4.3 million cliff top, ocean view home on the NSW Central Coast. The first is — good on him. Well done for living the Australian dream of home ownership and getting there on his own. “The second is this — this has to be the dumbest, most damaging piece of political tone deafness and timing since Tony Abbott appointed Prince Philip as a “Knight of the Order of Australia” in the Australia Day honours' list in 2015.” Shanahan wrote: “No matter what Albanese says to justify the purchase, it's a bad political look that makes him appear out of touch with people renting and trying to buy their own home. It also raises the immediate thought that it's a retirement parachute for after the next election.” Meanwhile, on the same day as the $4.3 million purchase was revealed, it was the AGM of Commonwealth Bank – which reported that more and more customers are feeling the pinch from the cost-of-living crisis. Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn revealed huge numbers of Australians are falling behind on their mortgage repayments. He told shareholders the bank has offered tailored hardship payment arrangements to 132,000 customers over the past year. Comyn said: “Households are continuing to find it very challenging.” But certainly not the household of our battler Prime Minister. Albo is doing very well indeed. He's just paid over $4 million for a home he won't be living in and he has decided he doesn't need to sell his $1.9 million investment property in Sydney to afford it. And that's perplexing news for the tenant he evicted on the grounds that he needed to sell the property, before subsequently changing his mind.

American pop music star Madonna performed before an estimated 1.6 million people on Saturday at Brazil's famous Copacabana Beach. The outdoor show in Rio de Janeiro was free to attend. The fans turned a long stretch of the coast into a huge dance floor for the last show of Madonna's Celebration Tour. The series began last October in London. The so-called “Queen of Pop” began Saturday's show with her 1998 song Nothing Really Matters. Huge cheers rose from the crowd pressed up against the barriers. Other attendees held parties in houses and hotels overlooking the beach. Helicopters and drones flew overhead, and boats floated on the water nearby. “Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” the 65-year-old Madonna told the crowd. Pointing out the ocean, the mountains and the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, she added: “This place is magic.” “我们现在身处世界上最美丽的地方,”65 岁的麦当娜对人群说道。 她指着海洋、山脉和俯瞰城市的基督救世主雕像补充道:“这个地方很神奇。”Madonna performed her popular songs, including Like A Virgin and Hung Up. For the introduction to another, Like A Prayer, Madonna covered her head in black cloth and held a rosary. 麦当娜表演了她的流行歌曲,包括《Like A Virgin》和《Hung Up》。 The star honored those who died of AIDS with the song Live to Tell. Large black and white images of the disease's victims appeared behind her as she sang. Later, she was joined on stage by Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar. Rio city officials estimated that 1.6 million people attended the show. Madonna's official website called the show the biggest ever in her 40-year career. “Since Madonna arrived here, I've been coming every day with this outfit to welcome my idol, my diva, my pop queen,” said 69-year-old retiree Rosemary de Oliveira Bohrer. She wore a gold-colored top and a black cap in a style that Madonna made popular. “自从麦当娜来到这里以来,我每天都穿着这套衣服来欢迎我的偶像、我的天后、我的流行天后,”69 岁的退休人员罗斯玛丽·德奥利维拉·博雷尔 (Rosemary de Oliveira Bohrer) 说道。 她穿着金色上衣和黑色帽子,这种风格是麦当娜流行的。 Eighteen sound towers were spread along the beach to ensure that all attendees could hear the performance. Fan Alessandro Augusto flew about 2,500 kilometers, from Brazil's Ceara state to Rio, to attend the show. Augusto said, “It's a unique opportunity to see Madonna, who knows if she'll ever come back.” “Welcome Queen!” a drink company announced with advertising around the city. Bars and restaurants prepared special alcoholic drinks named after Madonna songs. A shop known for selling Carnival clothing temporarily became a “Madonna” clothing store. “欢迎女王陛下!” 一家饮料公司宣布在城市各处做广告。 酒吧和餐馆准备了以麦当娜歌曲命名的特殊酒精饮料。 一家以销售嘉年华服装而闻名的商店暂时变成了“麦当娜”服装店。Several huge concerts have taken place on Copacabana beach before, including musician Rod Stewart's 1994 show. It took place on New Year's Eve as part of the city's holiday celebration. About 4 million people attended. However, not all necessarily took in the music show. And, in 2006, a Rolling Stones concert drew 1.2 million people onto the famed beach, the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported at the time. Madonna fan Ana Beatriz Soares attended the show Saturday. She said Madonna has made her mark across the years. “Madonna had to run so that today's pop artists could walk. That's why she's important, because she serves as an inspiration for today's pop divas,” she said. “And that's 40 years ago. Not 40 days, 40 months. It's 40 years,” she added. “麦当娜必须跑步,这样今天的流行艺术家才能走路。 这就是为什么她很重要,因为她是当今流行天后的灵感来源,”她说。 “那是 40 年前的事了。 不是40天,是40个月。 40 年了,”她补充道。

Copacabana beach's fame has spread worldwide – few beaches are more well-known than this 2.5-mile stretch of sand. It will no doubt be busy, but one of the pleasures of traveling is mixing with local people – and in the case of Rio de Janeiro, beautiful people! Many tourists begin their Brazil holiday in Rio, and this beach should be on the list of places to see before moving on. I have to take this podcast very early in the morning. In late morning, the crowd started forming and there will be disturbance. I prefer to keep it pure. Listen to it, enjoy it at your comfort home. Feel the Brazilian beach atmosphere. Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Sprint. Lunge. Sweat. It was entirely predictable, of course. Guy Heveldt nailed it on 1News last night. Every time it rolls round, he said, we always insist we don't like the Commonwealth Games. ‘They're a relic! They're outdated! Who wants to see us whip Rwanda in the Badminton, anyway?' But then, in the midst of a tough winter, with Covid knocking us about and all sorts of economic pressures, all it takes is a few medals in a few off-Broadway sports and we're right onboard with the Commonwealth Games. They're like a chilled-out Olympics where we win more. What's not to love?! But of all the Commonwealth sports, there's one in particular I've loved watching this week. Sprint. Lunge. Sweat. It does what a great individual sport should do. First of all, it's mostly rational. It's simple. It's the kind of sport that kids could invent in the playground. You can explain the fundamental rules in about 25 seconds and if you haven't seen a match since the last Commonwealth Games, no drama! You'll pick it up in no time. Sprint. Lunge. Sweat. Secondly, it blends raw athleticism and short twitch power with endurance, and technical skills. You can't just be fast. You've gotta' be able to last. You can't just have endurance. You've gotta' be super quick. You can't just be fit, you've gotta' have incredible hand-eye coordination, creativity, and flair. Sprint. Lunge. Sweat. Finally, it's a sport that attracts players from a diverse range of countries. If you consider the top five players in the World Rankings, for each of the men's and women's games, there are players from Egypt, the U.S, England, Peru, and New Zealand. Five continents. Sprint. Lunge. Sweat. It just seems so obvious to me. And sure, maybe it's because I'm a weekend battler with secret athletic ambitions. But I reckon there's something in it for everyone. Forget surfing and E-Sports, squash needs to be at the Olympics! Think about it. A glass court only costs a couple of hundred grand so it's a lot cheaper than a velodrome. And it's so versatile. In Egypt each year, they set up courts in front of the great Pyramid of Giza. You could do that anywhere. Imagine watching Olympic squash on Copacabana Beach or next to Shibuya Crossing. What a spectacle! LISTEN ABOVE Sprint. Lunge. Sweat. For me, the highlight of these Commonwealth Games was seeing Paul Coll vanquish his demons of four years ago. The Greymouth whiz sprinted. He lunged. He sweated. He gasped. He yelled. He smeared his greasy palm down the back wall to try and get a better grip on his racquet. He trailed. He led. He dived. He sprinted. He lunged. He sweated. He endured. And ultimately, he triumphed. Knowing that unlike athletes in many other sports, the squash players won't have the opportunity to compete at an Olympics, made New Zealand's squash success that much more special. The Commonwealth Games don't matter, you reckon? No one told Paul Coll.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After multiple failed attempts to fulfill her Olympic dream, Claire Michel found herself on the starting line at Copacabana Beach in 2016. She earned her spot in the sport of triathlon to represent her country on the world's stage in Rio de Janeiro.  She had every intention to shine. Shortly into the swim, Claire knew that she was expending precious energy that could prove costly as her competitors swam in packs on either side of her. They were moving faster and using less energy while she swam by herself doing all the work. She stayed present with what was unfolding, Claire is not one to panic. She gave it everything she had on the day. She came out of the water four minutes down from the leader. She got on her bike and got to work. The race was not over yet. As she approached the transition area to begin the 2nd lap of the bike she saw the media frenzy pass her by. She knew that the cameras were not there to capture her performance. They were there to broadcast the action of the lead pack which included 2016 medalists Gwen Jorgenson, Nicola Spirig and Vicky Holland. For the first time in her triathlon career, Claire was being lapped on the bike. She knew immediately this meant that her day was over. Everything she dreamed of, ended in an instant. She was in a state of shock and emotional disruption but what ensued next gave her the fuel to pick herself up and set her sights on Tokyo 2020. Claire is no stranger to failure and she knows that one of the greatest gifts in failure is the opportunity to rise up again. This is exactly what she has shown herself and the world since that day in Rio. Claire now trains under the guidance of Paulo Sousa and is a member of the coveted Triathlon Squad. She is thriving in her environment and there is no doubt in our minds that she will be shining on the world's stage again. This is a great conversation that covers so much about what it takes to be a top-level athlete and human. Thank you for tuning in and sharing this show with your community. He went to high school and college and before he graduated college from Oregon State University in 2007 with a degree in finance, he had already gotten a job as a financial analyst.  He had a fantastic time during his  4 years in school, but Sean couldn’t help but feel that he wasn’t prepared for his real life and he wanted to learn more tangible skills that he thought he needed to be successful after graduation. This led him to a job as a financial analyst that he quickly found wasn’t for him.  He had no free time. He was working 50 hours a week, wearing a suit and tie, and not having any of the flexibility to do the things that excites him.   Sean Ogle said that it all began on a trip to Brazil in 2009. He’d saved up all of his vacation time to head down to Rio for Carnival with one of his best friends.  It was the last day of his trip and he was walking down Copacabana Beach with a coconut in his hand and all he could think was “I should be able to do this whenever I want.” Over the next 6 months Sean started Location 180, sold his car, left his job, started a business and then in January of the following year he moved to Thailand. Location 180 is all about doing the stuff you really want to be doing in life. He specifically talks a lot about travel and entrepreneurship, and how it can be a great vehicle for reaching your goals. Sean’s primary business is his community Location Rebel – but he has a half a dozen other small businesses built around various interests of his.   Location 180 and Location Rebel. 3:46 Sean noticed there really wasn’t a good community for people looking to build a location independent business. So he created Location Rebel with the idea that he wanted a premium offering, where if someone was willing to invest in themselves and work hard – there would be no reason why they wouldn’t be able to build a successful business. Nearly 3 years later Sean has over 600 members, and a large chunk of them have left their jobs and are doing things on their own terms.   One of the biggest surprises about this process has been just how diverse the group of people they have is. It’s comprised of pepole from 20 year old college students who don’t want to go into the corporate world, to 45 year old single moms, and 63 year old retirees. Sean says that anyone can build this type of business, if the desire to do it is there.   Fear of Uncertainty. 10:32 Sean said after he lost his job he was uncertain of what will happen next to his life. He was uncertain how to pay his rent and his bills, and he was also uncertain if he could still get a good job. But he realized that the uncertainty that he had was also his motivation to make certain things happen. And that is the mindset the entrepreneur has to have in order to be successful.   The Secret of his success: 15:01 Sean gives tutorials to people who went through his situation. He helped people figure out how to make this lifestyle work for themselves. He also gives inspiration to people on how to do different things to build their business. He said the most important points to consider in order to succeed is how to build community online. Sean has helped dozens of people quit their jobs and build successful online businesses over the past year.   Sean’s greatest success is the fact that he built a business that allows him to do what he wants, when he wants. He still have to pinch himself on a regular basis!  There are the more superficial successes like building a 6-figure business, or a big email list. But frankly, it’s the fact that Sean built something that has helped both himself and hundreds of other people achieve a life that they’re actually excited about, that I think is the most important.   Walking through his book Location Rebel 16:11 Sean Ogle said that everyone is different, but they usually have variations of the same problem: they aren’t happy doing what they’re doing and want to change. The most successful people he work with have without fail have followed the 3 step process:   1) Build relevant skills – WordPress, SEO, Copywriting, Social media. Start a blog and get familiar with all of these things.   2) Freelance one of these skills – This builds income and confidence. Once you have those two things, it gets much easier to start a business that’s a bit sexier like e-commerce, apps, info products, etc.   3) Apply these skills to your own projects: Most people start with this step, and that’s why the fail – they don’t have the proper groundwork laid out to be successful.   Best Advice: 43:43 Sean said, “Start a blog and find a group that has the same interests with you. Even if you’re working on your own, you’ll be facing an uphill battle if you don’t have a few people to turn to for support. “ Links:   Sean Ogle’s Books: Location 180 Location Rebel   Official Website: http://www.seanogle.com/ Twitter: Sean Ogle LinkedIn: Sean Ogle
