Joel is an athlete and an entrepreneur, becoming the youngest person in the world to run seven ultra-marathons on seven continents in 2017. Along the way, Joel raised $192,000 for Pencils of Promise and built seven schools. Currently, he's also the Owner of Ultimate Paleo Guide and Ultimate Meal Plans. In this episode… What is your personal and professional life like? Do you stay within a box and avoid trying new things? Would you rather push your limits and achieve the impossible in your life and in your business?  The Owner of Impossible, Joel Runyon, says that you can do and achieve more than you think. Most people say they want to do something hard — something they've never done before — but give up after the first obstacle. To push past this, Joel created an ”impossible list” that included things like running an ultra-marathon and owning a business. And guess what: he's achieved both.  In this episode of The Ed O'Keefe Show, Ed O'Keefe sits down with Joel Runyon, the Owner of Impossible, to discuss his journey to achieving the impossible. Joel explains how he was able to run an ultra-marathon, tips he's learned from being an athlete that have helped him start and run his company, how to push your limits, and more.

How does one go from living jobless in their parents’ basement to running 7 ultramarathons on 7 continents, building up a company and brand, all while raising hundreds of thousands for charity?? Joel Runyon dives into the impossible in this episode, sharing the major mindset shift that allowed him to achieve all of these things, and detailing how we can break through the limits we subconsciously set for ourselves. It all starts with “turning the impossible into a challenge.” One of Joel’s “impossibles” was running a triathlon, which in time led to him taking on the ultras in order to raise money for building schools worldwide. No, it was. not. easy. Joel wasn’t a runner to begin with, and there were so many times he could have quit. But, to Joel, a few hours of pain was more than doable if it meant a lifetime of possibilities for a child given the gift of education. “Impossible” in areas of poverty around the world includes obtaining clean water and building schools. Remembering this, do your “impossibles” appear a little more achievable as you re-appreciate the resources you’ve been given? Often, the obstacle surrounding the seemingly-impossible is fear. Currently, there’s a lot of fear surrounding the global COVID-19 pandemic. Joel and hosts Bob and Kelsey point out that there is also a lot of opportunity. We can either use our free time to sit around in the basement, eating junk food and watching Netflix, or we can read more books, set more goals, workout, grow stronger; breathe. “Don’t come out of this [social isolation] weaker.” Our response to a time of crisis, where much is beyond our control, is a choice. Getting into the practice of taking available opportunities puts us in a much better place to not just grow ourselves, but also to reach out to others. What will you use your lockdown time to achieve for yourself and for those around you? Today I'm thrilled to share my interview with Mr. Impossible, Joel Runyon. Joel and I took a very rainy walk in Austin, Texas to talk about how he went from living in his parents' basement and struggling to find a job, to running 7 ultra marathons in 7 countries to build 7 schools for Pencils of Promise.  In the midst of his low point, Joel decided to make a list of all the things he wanted to do that, at the time, he thought would be impossible. This was the list that changed his life. He started to do the things on his "impossible list" and, slowly, as he checked them off one-by-one, started to turn his life around.  Joel has since been traveling the world running ultra marathons and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. He started a company, has learned multiple languages and started the nonprofit impossible.org to give back.  Joel truly enriches your life simply by meeting him. Once you listen to this episode, I promise you'll want to go out and do something impossible.  A big thank you to Joel for taking some time out to share his story (and rained on!) We can't wait to see what you do next!  And a huge thank you to our amazing sponsor Aftershokz! We couldn't do this podcast without you. Be sure to visit charitymiles.org/aftershokz for more information on their super comfortable bone conduction headphones.  Check out Joel and his Impossible List.  Check out Joel's nonprofit at impossible.org  Also mentioned... A few years ago, Joel Runyon got tired of having an average life, working at UPS and waiting for things to happen to me, so he decided to do something about it. He made a list of all the things he used to think were impossible and then I set out to do them. Now Joel works on his own terms and does his best to live a life of adventure and meaning while doing the impossible. Favorite Success Quote “It's always impossible till its done” – Nelson Mandela Key Points 1. You have to at least try Chances are, you will fail (at least in the beginning) at everything you try. Despite what many gurus may tell you, success is never guaranteed. However, you will never know how far you can go, never know how much of a difference you can make, and never know what you could have accomplished without trying. No matter what the venture, give it a shot, try it out. Don't expect immediate success, or success at all, simply try. Once you take that first step, you may be surprised where the path takes you. 2. You can't wait for things to happen to you The world will never hand you success, or hand you opportunities. You must make them. Make a decision to take action and create your own path, as James Altucher says in his phenomenal book, “You must Choose Yourself.” No one else will. No one else has your best interest at heart, if you want anything, you must take responsibility and make it happen. 3. Be entrepreneurial in your career With the online entrepreneur buzz that is so prevalent in modern society, it is often tempting to hand in your resignation and start building your own gig without first establishing a runway. A far wiser approach is to use your current career as a training ground for your future endeavors. Seek to make the most impact and value in your current position rather than seeking to create a new one. And most importantly, learn all you can. Working in a corporate job can teach you how to effectively manage your time as you try to build your own gig on the side. It can teach you how to effectively and maturely deal with all levels of foolishness that you will inevitably encounter within a 9-5. And it will teach you how to grind it out, how to keep going even when things are not going your way. 4. Start small After listening to inspiring stories about tri-athletes and multimillionaire businessmen, it is often tempting to only look at the end result without contemplating the steps taken to achieve it. The key to seeing results in your own life it to create a snowball effect of “impossible” actions. Want to lose 30 lbs. and get shredded? Focus on the first 5 lbs. Want to become a millionaire blogger? Focus on making your first $1,000. Start small and let the actions compound for bigger and bigger results. Take it one step at a time and before you know it, you will be miles from where you started. 5. Just keep going The simplest, yet most challenging piece of advice. Just keep going. As Winston Churchill so famously put it “If you are going through hell, keep going.” Do not stop, even when everything is caving around you, do not give others the satisfaction of seeing you quit. Keep going no matter what.

If you're here for leadership, especially personal leadership, you're going to hear about one of the most important things you can do to improve. What Joel talks about and how he lives are how you develop skills people think you can't learn, such as integrity, discipline, and resilience. You can, but you have to act---specifically to challenge yourself, not just passively read about or watch. We talk about cold showers, a big sidcha of mine, and one of the simplest ways to challenge yourself. If you've read about my cold shower practice and found it confusing, our conversation brings a couple experienced guys talking about it.You are your habits. Joel turned his life around with his, which is what this podcast is about. From nothing, he lived world class accomplishments, setting records running ultramarathons and starting schools in the process.I recommend watching his TEDx talk to see how much you can change your life.If you want to affect the environment, you will face "I want to act but if no one else does it won't make a difference," in others if not yourself. Joel's life is the opposite and it looks like he loves his life more than the people who accept such lack of meaning, accepting the resulting complacency. How do you treat the world?True to form, Joel committed to a double challenge of avoiding bottled beverages and picking up trash, so we talked about both.I recommend trying the challenge of picking up trash daily for a month or so. It takes almost no time or effort but gives you insight into how little many people value material objects or how much they pollute. Or maybe their ignorance.Joel and I talked about the results. We can't figure it out, but you can't help considering it when you experience how people treat the world. When was the last time you littered? Where does it come from? We speculated. Write me if you have ideas. I find it very confusing. We don't value stuff. That's why we give it away.I hope you see that acquiring bags, disposable things, and so on lead to garbage, which is waste, which hurts others. Stop acquiring. Also true to form, Joel remarked that making a difference is "almost too easy," yet he learned more about the environment than he would have reading statistics.TakeawaysHabits make new behaviors trivial, no mental effort. Habits enable you to live by your values. In his case, beyond the environment, he ate and drank less sugar and unhealthy stuff with gain in joy and refreshment. He experienced more nature.I don't know your values, but if they include clean land, air, and water, he presents two you can start with little effort.Be warned: you'll care more. You'll change. You'll improve as a leader. You'll be surprised and notice others' behavior and yours. You'll probably become less tolerant for litter and waste. Don't we want to tolerate litter less? With experience, the skills you learn might get you promoted, hired, funded elsewhere in life.Start your snowball. In Episode 33, I introduced you to Joel Runyon who recently ran an ultramarathon on every continent - and raised a staggering $190,000 in the process. Today, we're diving deeper into the obstacles he faced, lessons learned, and what he'd change if he were to do it all over again. In part two of our conversation, Joel opens up about the obstacles he faced while attempting to finish the 777 Project. They included injuries, unrelated lawsuits, brutal trail races in the mountains of Thailand, and the normal logistical nightmares of running races all over the world. Of course, Joel didn't quit. It didn't matter that he had to take 6 months off to rehabilitate a peroneal tendon injury. He didn't care that every race - and the travel that went along with it - was self-funded. Nor was it even an option to quit during a race (how's that for commitment?). More important than the mindset that allowed Joel to leapfrog these obstacles is the impact and lessons learned from the 777 Project. We cover all that and more in today's episode of the Strength Running Podcast.

Joel smashes through goals normally considered impossible.  Recently, he completed an ambitious project to run 7 ultramarathons on 7 continents for charity to build 7 schools in developing countries. He succeeded - raising over $190,000. The 777 Project brought him to: Thailand Antarctica Australia Patagonia South Africa Finland and Chicago! Joel's philanthropic quest brought him around the world to extreme locations and terrain that nearly broke him. But his persistence led to the constructions of seven schools through Pencils of Promise, a charity where 100% of donations go toward its mission of school construction, scholarships, and trains teachers. Joel is on the podcast to talk about what it takes to run a series of ultramarathons in rapid succession, in varying climates, on very different terrain, all over the world. What are the travel logistics like for such an audacious project? How do you train for so many different races? What kind of gear is necessary to race in Antarctica? We cover that - and a lot more - on today's show.

Would you like to rise above your fears to live a life without limits? In today's podcast, Khierstyn talks with Joel Runyon, of Impossible HQ, about how you can conquer those fears and achieve what seems impossible.   Joel shares his inspiring story of how he turned his “can’ts” into “cans”. He stopped clinging to excuses and acted; Started running. Joel trained for and ran marathons, triathlons, and eventually, an ultra-marathon in Antarctica! The tough physical discipline required to master these tasks led him to develop a winning mindset that can be applied to any area of life. In this episode, we will learn how he did it so we too can go beyond what we thought was impossible. We can go limitless!   The First Step: Accept NO excuses and Act     Joel candidly tells the story of how he was at rock bottom in his life. Everything seemed impossible to him. His first step was to allow no more excuses in his life. He was finally sick of his own excuses, and that's what it took. Sick enough to be motivated. His second step was to find something he could do. Then he did it. He took control of his physical accomplishment. He did not choose what most would deem a reasonable goal. No, Joel went for the impossible. He knew he could run so he set his sights on running a triathlon. Then he started running. and did what others are afraid to and went for it. He trained, did it, accomplished it, and then set the next goal higher. Along the way, he developed a winning mindset that now allows him to live without limits in every area of his life.  You can too... if you ditch excuses, go limitless and determine to do the impossible.    If You Can't Do This, You Don't Have What It Takes to Go Limitless Joel fills us in on his 30 Day Cold Therapy Challenge. It is a challenging feat for most, though not impossible for anyone. It is, however, highly uncomfortable. That is the key to how it works its magic. The cold therapy gives you daily practice at “cowboying up”, taking a deep breath, and doing that which you REALLY do not want to do. What is the challenge? It’s simple. You intentionally take a five-minute-long cold shower, daily, for thirty days. The purpose is to learn to discipline yourself to do the things you naturally don't want to do. You are purposefully creating discomfort, then working through it. That's empowering. That conquers fear by helping you realize the head mess you experience beforehand is the worst of it. No more need to fear. Without fear, you don't need limits. You can live a limitless life of your dreams. It could be just a few cold showers away!   Joel Applied These Same Strategies to GO LIMITLESS and Compete in an Ultra-Marathon, in Antarctica!        Here, Joel tells the tale of how he applied the strategy of doing the impossible to eventually compete in an ultra-marathon. That is a total of 100K… 10K, ten times. Also, it was in Antarctica, where it is so cold, there is no wildlife. It's a fascinating story of how anyone can go limitless and make their dreams come true.   How Does Choosing the Challenge Train Your Mind to be Limitless? The real value in the cold challenge is in how it trains your brain to ignore fears and persevere until you have done the impossible. The battleground, in those moments before you turn on the cold water, is in your mind. You're scared. You don't want to do it. More than that, you REALLY don't want to do it. It’s easy to come up with dozens of reasons not to. In that moment of no turning back, you decide to fear not and go for it. WOW! Yes, it is shocking, but you did it. You did not die and you can do it again. The wonderful thing is, the next time, conquering those fears will be a little bit easier. You tested your mental capabilities and won! That is how Joel did the impossible over and over again. You can go limitless too, if you accept the challenge.   How Adding Hours a Day of Workouts to His Schedule Increased Joel's Productivity Joel tells how adding intense physical training to his schedule made his him more efficient and productive. It forces you to step up and get serious about how you manage your time because it pushes your limits.   It develops character, consistency, and self-discipline. When you learn to push yourself physically and exceed your own limits, nothing seems impossible anymore. In the process of all the physical training, you find you have disciplined your mind to give you the edge you need to go limitless in every area of your life.   Do You Need Help to Keep Moving? There’s an App for That! The Move Well App will help you to stay mobile, increase mobility after injuries, and undo some of the damage sitting at a desk all day long can do. Each simple 5-10-minute routine is almost as good as having a physical therapist at your beck and call. If you are going limitless and need help to start moving more, this app is for you.   What is YOUR impossible goal? Khierstyn would love to hear about your impossible goal. You don't have one yet? Throw out the box, forget having limits, and reach for your dreams. When you have it...that one special, impossible thing you will do.... please, email her at [ obviously, insert it]. A few years ago, Joel got tired of living an average life. He was waiting for things to happen but they never did, so he decided to do something about it. He created a list of the things he used to think were impossible and started doing them. Now he lives a life of adventure, runs multiple online businesses under the IMPOSSIBLE brand, and continues to do the impossible. “How many things out there that you're telling yourself are impossible are easily doable if you just put in the time, effort and training it requires?” It all began with The Impossible List™. The list begain small, with just one thing he wasn't sure was achievable: completing a triathlon. From there, it grew to dozens of Impossible challanges created and completed. Once you do the impossible, you start to redefine your limitations. The blog isn't a bucket list, or a list of things he hopes to do before he dies – it's an ever-expanding list of his limits and what he can go beyond. In his business, Joel is focusing on building out his team under the IMPOSSIBLE umbrella. He's also breaking out his content across different subjects into separate businesses so that each can niche down even further. “I'm getting better at being more explicit in what each business does, what needs to be done to run it, and who I need to take actions on those tasks.” The next step is scaling it all. Joel is investing money, resources and his own time into preparing his team so that they can better help him grow the IMPOSSIBLE brand. He's leveling up his role from manager to owner. Joel and his team at Impossible X recently re-launched the 777 Project – an endurance, adventure and philanthropic initiative to run 7 ultra marathons on 7 continents in order to raise money and awareness to build 7 schools with Pencils of Promise. They will provide opportunities to those for whom a basic education can be impossible. Loved getting to grab time with Joel amidst all of his adventures     SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: If Joel could go back to the early days, or maybe even not that long ago, what would he do differently? What were the resources that Joel looked at that helped him start the business? Joel has a lot of different projects in different interests under one umbrella. How does he manage that all? What's giving Joel the juice these days to feel inspired?
