There's a suggestion new cards accrediting service dogs will address a non-existent problem. A new nationally consistent card will be rolled out in coming months, to make sure disabled people aren't stopped for having the dogs with them. It states denying access is against the law - and has a link for further information. Independent disability advocate Jane Carrigan says it's a bit over the top. The Care Compass with Nicole Brandon Caregiving in the Fire: Protecting Parents, Finding Resources, and Holding Onto Love Nicole Brandon shares a deeply personal Care Compass episode about protecting aging parents, navigating fiduciary decisions, assisted living, rehab centers, cognitive care, senior day programs, service animals, transportation resources, and the small sacred bonds that keep families connected. A Personal Episode From the Caregiving Front Line In this solo episode of The Care Compass, Nicole Brandon speaks directly to caregivers and families who are trying to navigate the complicated world of aging parents, assisted living, medical care, memory concerns, fiduciary decisions, and quality of life. She explains that instead of bringing on a guest, she wants to share what has been happening in her own family since the last broadcast, hoping that her transparency can help someone else walking a similar path. The transcript frames all medical, legal, fiduciary, service-animal, and care-related comments as Nicole's personal experiences and perspectives rather than independently verified advice. Fighting for the Right Level of Care Nicole describes a painful struggle over whether her parents should be moved into memory care. She says one parent may be approaching the point where memory care could be considered, but she strongly believes her father is not ready for that environment. According to Nicole, a fiduciary had been pushing for both parents to enter memory care as a cost-saving measure, while her father's doctors did not believe such a move would be appropriate. She worries that taking away his independence, friends, activities, and quality of life could cause him to decline quickly, and she emphasizes the emotional toll of fighting systems while trying to protect both parents. The Mental Load of Caregiving A major theme of the episode is the constant pressure caregivers carry. Nicole describes waking up with the question of how to keep her parents safe, spending hours researching agencies, facilities, legal options, adult protective services, veterans' benefits, care plans, and ways to keep her parents together. She speaks honestly about how hard it is to maintain one's own life while living inside someone else's medical and emotional emergency. Missed birthdays, forgotten obligations, endless calls, and nonstop decisions become part of the caregiver's reality. Emergency Mode and the Caregiver Brain Nicole spends time explaining what she has learned about how the brain can stay in “emergency mode” even after the immediate crisis passes. She compares it to a car stuck in the wrong gear: after a hospitalization, stroke, feeding-tube surgery, cancer treatment, fall, or other crisis, both the patient and the caregiver may remain mentally locked in survival mode. She says this can create fogginess, difficulty sequencing tasks, and a feeling of being out of sorts. For Nicole, understanding this helped her make sense of why caregivers can struggle to return to normal routines after weeks or months of crisis. Cognitive Support and Brain Reactivation Nicole shares that she was introduced to a cognitive-development agency that, in her words, works with seniors to keep the brain sharp, support memory, improve sequencing, and reactivate brain pathways. She says her father is participating in the program online several days a week, and she is encouraged by what she sees in his thinking, balance, and brain activity. Nicole plans to bring representatives from the organization on the show so listeners can learn directly about their work. She also wonders whether caregivers who participate alongside seniors may benefit from the exercises as well. Resources, Experts, and the Refusal to Give Up Nicole encourages listeners who are facing trauma, illness, Parkinson's, stroke recovery, Lyme disease, shingles, cancer, or other challenges to reach out and share what they are going through. She says there are more resources, specialists, technologies, nutrition options, support systems, and research pathways than people often realize when they first hear a frightening diagnosis. Her message is that a difficult diagnosis should not automatically close the door on hope. Instead, she wants The Care Compass to become a place where experts, specialists, caregivers, and families can connect around practical solutions. Conversations That Become Mountains Nicole reflects on the difficult conversations families must eventually have, such as taking away a parent's car keys. She remembers going through that process with her own parents and watching her father previously face the same issue with his own father. She explains that some conversations may sound simple from the outside, but for the family living them, each one can feel like a mountain. Whether the issue is driving, oxygen, dialysis, full-time care, a feeding schedule, or mobility, each decision carries emotional weight because it touches independence, dignity, safety, and love. Senior Day Camp and Social Care One resource Nicole highlights with excitement is the idea of senior day camp or adult day care. She describes it as a place where older adults can socialize, enjoy activities, hear music, play games, receive meals, and have access to staff and medical support. She compares it to day camp for children or even dog day care, emphasizing that seniors also need joy, structure, stimulation, and companionship. For families who work during the day, cannot afford full-time care, or worry about leaving a parent alone, Nicole sees adult day care as a powerful option that can create safety and happiness at the same time. Rehab Centers Are Not All the Same Nicole shares one of the strongest warnings in the episode: not all rehab centers are equal. She describes nearly losing her mother in one rehab facility and says she had to intervene directly, call her mother's primary doctor, and get her moved to the hospital. At the same time, she also describes another rehab center as a “gem,” where staff treated her mother with love, encouragement, and urgency when needed. Her point is that a list provided by a hospital does not guarantee equal quality, and families must advocate, observe, ask questions, and trust their instincts. Service Dogs, Companion Animals, and Healing Presence A softer and hopeful section of the episode centers on Nicole's dogs, especially Heaven, whom she describes as a trained medical dog. Nicole shares stories of Heaven sensing distress, receiving medical and pediatric training, and helping comfort a young girl on a plane whose mother was being deployed. She also describes how Heaven helped a flight attendant who had been afraid of dogs gradually feel safe enough to hold her. Nicole uses this story to talk more broadly about the healing value of animals, including medical-alert dogs, service dogs, companion dogs, pets for seniors, and animals that bring calm, safety, and emotional support. Transportation, Companions, and Practical Daily Help Nicole also points to practical resources that can make caregiving easier, including senior transportation, drivers who take older adults to appointments, companions who sit with them during long waits, and caregivers who match the personality and needs of the person receiving care. She explains that her father does not only need transportation; he needs someone who can engage him, listen to his jokes, play music, dance with him, and keep him company through long medical appointments. Her broader message is that care is not only about logistics — it is also about preserving joy, personality, and human connection. Small Safety Changes and Simple Tools Nicole reminds listeners that not every caregiving improvement has to be expensive or complicated. She gives the example of using soft baby-proofing bumpers around sharp bathroom sink edges to prevent injuries from falls. For her, even a small, inexpensive item can make a major difference in safety. She encourages caregivers to look for practical tools, home modifications, services, and supports that can make life happier, safer, more peaceful, and more manageable for aging parents and for the people caring for them. The Sacred “Special” Between Loved Ones The closing section becomes deeply personal as Nicole shares the running family story that her father has always told her he is from Mars because he has one blue eye and one brown eye. Since childhood, he told her that Martian daddies have two different-colored eyes and invisible antennas, and that he came to Earth to guide her to greatness. Now, as he ages, that private family mythology has become more precious than ever. Nicole encourages listeners to find their own “special” connection with a loved one: an inside joke, emoji, word, sign, sound, butterfly, bell, or shared symbol that can keep love alive even when conversation becomes difficult. Walking With Caregivers Through the Dark Nicole closes by explaining why she created The Care Compass: she wished someone had been there to guide her through the caregiving maze, and now she wants to offer that guidance to others. She invites listeners to write in with questions, experiences, resource needs, and expert recommendations. Her final message is one of companionship: caregivers are not alone, help exists, and even the hardest path can turn toward light when people walk it together.

Canine Angels provides service dogs at no cost to children and young adults. The nonprofit is now seeking more volunteer puppy raisers.

It's been one year since the killing of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their golden retriever, Gilbert.Gilbert started out as a service dog in training through Helping Paws, the Eden Prairie nonprofit that trains assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities, veterans and first responders living with PTSD. But Gilbert was ultimately deemed a little too friendly for the job, and the Hortmans adopted him as their own.In the months following their deaths, thousands of people donated to Helping Paws in their memory. That support helped create the Hortman Heroes Fund, which will train future service dogs for veterans and first responders with PTSD.MPR News host Nina Moini got a tour of the Helping Paws facility from executive director Alyssa Golob.
