As an Air Force photographer, Stacy Pearsall traveled to over 41 countries, served in three combat tours, and earned a Bronze Star Medal—but when she returned home, that's when the real fight began. This week on Watching America, she discusses her military career and the challenges many veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life. She shares stories of these struggles in a new PBS documentary series “After Action” that details the journeys of 21 diverse veterans from across the country. “The military taught me everything I needed to know to thrive in service, but I wasn't given a handbook on how to become a civilian again. Simply hanging up my uniform did not mean I packed up years of conditioning, life-changing, sometimes traumatizing, experiences at the same time. I struggled to reconnect with those around me, even my family,” Pearsall said. “For those who've served, I hope they will discover there's an army of people who are on the same journey home. And for those who are waiting for their veterans to find their way, this show may help illuminate the path.” https://stacypearsall.com and https://pbs.org/afteraction

Veteran's Day is a very important day for American Warrior Radio. Three Veterans joins us to share their thoughts. Frank Antenori served as a Green Beret. He trained Mujahedeen fighters to fight the Soviets, served in Desert Storm and returned to Afghanistan in 2002, participating in Operation Anaconda among other actions. His book Rough Neck 91 describes his A-Team's battle against a numerically superior force in Iraq. Frank's uncle Gino Merli was awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II. A member of Stacy Pearsall's family served in the armed forces all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Stacy served as an Air Force Combat Photographer until injuries from several IED blasts forced her into a medical retirement. She is founder of the Veteran's Portrait Project and has photographed over 8.500 Veterans all across the USA. Chris Kilgore was “born into the Army” at Fort Bragg. He flew helicopters in Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also flew for the US Coast Guard. Chris is one of the Vietnam Purple Heart pilots whose stories are told in the book “Mended Wings”. Our guests share their perspectives on several topics including the false stereotype of the “broken Veteran” and things civilians should think about on Veteran's Day. Stacy: “Show support through your actions. There are so many opportunities in every community to do so. If you reach out somebody is going to reach back.” Chris: “We should take advantage of every chance we have to talk to, learn from and thank our Veterans for their patriotism.” Frank: “Sometimes members of our military are only treated as the break glass in case of war crowd. Lives at home go on as usual because of the sacrifices that Veterans are making overseas.” TAKEAWAY: Just because a war is over doesn't mean it has ended for those who fought it.

*** Please note there are a couple of minutes of echo on this show, there was a bad weather storm in Stacy's area. This caused our video session to black out a few times too, but i've edited all that out so can't tell. Nothing much to worry about though, just enjoy Stacy's presence. *** It’s that time again and its now episode 98. After recently speaking with Stu Mckenzie I thought it would be great to have a female combat photographer too. Some research later I came across a wonderful story about Stacy Pearsall, who had served and was doing a fabulous veternas project. After speaking with Stacy it was quite clear she has a wonderful sense of humour (as you will hear). Stacy is a person who hasn’t let her disabilities from her servitude affect her. Along with her trusty assistant and Charlie the service dog (world-famous) she applies her trade as a photographer. One of the main reasons you should listen is to her Stacy talk about her lovely veterans' project. This involves her traveling to every state in the USA. This is no mean feat for someone like Stacy, so listen carefully as she talks a little about herself. So in this one: charlie & Dolly Parton service dogs female veterans combat injuries + PTSD grey days combat camera requirements military jokes, gear & meals New Zealand travel dreams flying with dogs holsters + injuries photojournalism gear or gun? being an Ilford master brand loyalty & integrity Random questions Of course, Stacy is subjected to the usual barmy questions – so find out why you shouldn't watch horror films. Mariangela Abeo is a photographer, producer, writer and public speaker. She’s the creator of Faces of Fortitude, a movement in portraits that strives to lay a foundation for healing for those affected by suicide. Faces of Fortitude provides a safe, stigma-free space, virtually through social media, and in-person with appearances and gallery events, for mental health and suicide to be discussed. Mariangela recently stood on the TEDx stage for the first time in Youngstown, Ohio to deliver her talk entitled Celebrate the Survivor: Creating a Safe Space around Suicide. Her goal is to combat the mental health stigma at a grassroots level, where it all begins. In this episode Mariangela returns to the CreativeLive studios where Faces of Fortitude was conceived and describes the moment when the lightbulb went off during a class by Stacy Pearsall. We talk about her personal transformation in the past two years since she began Faces as a personal project on the weekends. Being self-taught, she explains what it took to push through imposter syndrome and call herself a photographer. We talk about how words that are whispered can create shame and she gives us a sneak peek into writing her next TEDx talk. This is We Are Photographers with Mariangela Abeo and this is her story.
Her job as a combat photographer was to chronicle war, combat, human strife, and disaster relief efforts among other significant moments in history. But over time it became a much, much more weighty task. One that she was passionate about executing, but one that would ultimately take a heavy toll on her body and mind. Stacy L. Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During her time in service, she traveled to over 41 countries, and attended the Military Photojournalism Program at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. During three combat tours, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor for combat actions in Iraq. Though disabled and retired from military service, Pearsall continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer, and is an author, educator, military consultant, public speaker and founder of the Veterans Portrait Project. Presently, Pearsall’s work is featured in a joint exhibition, “The Face of Battle, Americans at War 9/11 to Now,” at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Pearsall was one of only two women to win National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Military Photographer of the Year competition, and the only woman to have earned it twice. She's been awarded the Carolinas Freedom Foundation Freedom Award, honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Margaret Cochran Corbin Award, lauded by the White House as a Champion of Change, and holds an honorary doctoral degree from The Citadel. Pearsall has served as a nominating juror for the Pulitzer Prize and held a presidential-appointed board member position for the NPPA. She’s held a position on the advisory board of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at The Citadel since 2009. While transitioning out of military service in 2008, Pearsall purchased the Charleston Center for Photography (CCP). She grew the once grass roots photo club into a reputable brand for photography education, studio rentals, fine art print labs and gallery under one roof. As CCP grew, so did her personal endeavors with the Veterans Portrait Project. In order to pursue her personal project full time, Pearsall sold the CCP in the fall of 2013. The PDN “Personal Project” award-winning series Veterans Portrait Project (VPP) began while Pearsall rehabilitated from combat injuries sustained in Iraq. Spending hours in VA waiting rooms surrounded by veterans from every generation and branch of service, Pearsall was compelled to honor and thank them in the only way she knows how, photography. Pearsall has traveled coast to coast documented roughly 6,000 veterans in over 100+ engagements in 27 states, hosted numerous community-based exhibitions showcasing veterans from their respective hometowns, and took part in a USAA sponsored YouTube docu-series of her adventures on the road. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, and those who fought valiantly, several VPP images are displayed on the walls within the Pentagon. Between her photography, teaching and speaking engagements, Pearsall completed her first photography book, Shooter: Combat from Behind the Camera, which received worldwide praise as "A book of the highest levels in the annals of combat journalism." And her second book, A Photojournalist's Field Guide: In the Trenches with Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall, is "A must have for every aspiring photographer out there, and even pros can pick up a few new tricks to help them become better photographers."
