Note from Pepper: This episode is special for me. J Robbins is my favorite producer and I never in a million years thought I would get the chance to have a conversation with him. Yay! Robbins began his career as a bassist for Government Issue, and has also led five of his own bands: Jawbox, Rollkicker Laydown, Burning Airlines, Channels, and Office of Future Plans. He was a touring bassist for Scream and played bass on the debut 7" from Jack Potential, which was issued by DeSoto Records in 1993. More recently he played bass in Report Suspicious Activity with Vic Bondi, which released two albums on Alternative Tentacles Records. In 2011, Robbins, along with Kerosene 454's drummer and fellow Channels bandmate Darren Zentek, bassist Brooks Harlan, and guitarist/cellist Gordon Withers, released an EP under the name Office of Future Plans. The band, who had been playing since 2009 and released an album on Dischord Records in November 2011, but as of October 2016, they are not together anymore. In May 31, 2019, J. Robbins released his first solo album, Un-Becoming. Robbins is also a successful producer and engineer for bands such as Ponytail, Clutch (and side project The Bakerton Group), Jets to Brazil, Hey Mercedes, Shiner, Mock Orange, The Pauses, The Life and Times, Miranda Sound, Time Spent Driving, Faraquet, The Dismemberment Plan, The Monorchid, The Promise Ring, Dwindle, Pilot to Gunner, Paint It Black, None More Black, Jawbreaker, Discount, Against Me!, Goodbye Soundscape, Modern Life is War, Stapleton, Murder By Death, mewithoutYou, Black Cross (hardcore), Lemuria, Caustic Casanova, The Sword, Debate (from Sao Paulo, Brazil), Coliseum, Hammer No More the Fingers, Small Brown Bike, Broadcaster, Noyo Mathis and Nakatomi Plaza. Welcome to an all-new bonus episode of Films for the Void! In this episode, Landon interviews Jonathan "Jono" Diener - a Flint-based musician, comic writer, marketing master, habitual tweeter, and certified cat and coffee enthusiast. You may know him as the drummer for former Fueled by Ramen punk band The Swellers, who spent the better part of a decade touring worldwide until calling it quits in 2015. Since then, however, he's kept incredibly busy as the Creative Director for Rootless Coffee in Flint, and as the drummer for the newly assembled band 84 Tigers, formed alongside Small Brown Bike members Mike and Ben Reed, as well as for  Worcester, Massachusetts punk band No Trigger. You can follow the work he's doing with Rootless over on Twitter @ rootlesscoffee, and if you live on the east coast, you can catch 84 Tigers in Brooklyn, Providence, and Boston this March.Landon chats with Jono about making the move from DIY touring to marketing, bestows advice for those working in freelance spaces, the work he's doing with Rootless Coffee, and, of course, movies - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:00 Interview w/ Jonathan Diener00:33:22 Round Robin Discussion

We had the pleasure of interviewing Her Head's On Fire over Zoom video.Indie rock, of all stripes, is far too long in the tooth —and the classic back catalogs far too crowded— fo half measures: If we are to have new "left of the dial" songs in an age where the wry cleverness and heart-on-sleeve (or heart-patch-on-messenger-bag?) vulnerability of yore have listed into a kind of sardonic nihilism, then those songs must be full of that strange alchemic mix of chords and melodies that make hearts flutter and souls soar—they must be incandescent; bright flares that light us up and burn away the pretenses and bullshit the world circa 2022 seems determined to encase us in.Enter Her Head's On Fire — a fiery, enlivening quartet with an unfuckwithable pedigree (Saves the Day, Garrison, Small Brown Bike, The Bomb, Gay for Johnny Depp) that serves as the DNA for a 10-track genetic splicing debut full-length, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes, that is not only simultaneously familiar and transcendent but also very, very good. If you ever thrilled to the anthems of Samiam, pounded the steering wheel to Superchunk, reveled in the waves of Dinosaur Jr's melodic fuzz, gladly went over to the Farside, got down to some Elvis Costello, or can remember where you were the first time you heard Sense Field…well, then Her Head's On Fire's heart-seeking post-post-hardcore, "emo"tive rock stemwinders will be the best thing to happen to you in a very long time.Building on the promise of an auspicious bow via last year's well-received split with living legend J. Robbins, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes is a beguiling and powerful statement: Her Head's On Fire has your number and a container of clean sonic kerosine. All you have to do is follow the light, open up to the real, and find your way back to the messy, anthem-inspiring glory of love once again. We want to hear from you! This week's guest is Mike Reed. These days, Reed can be heard as the guitarist and vocalist of 84 Tigers, a tremendous Michigan-based project that's preparing to release their debut album, Time In The Lighthouse, on Spartan Records this fall. Prior to that album's Oct. 21 release and the band's upcoming appearance at The Fest, Reed spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about the formation of his new band, the process of writing and recording the forthcoming album and what the near future holds for 84 Tigers. Of course, the interview also touched upon Reed's years in legendary Midwest emo outfit Small Brown Bike, as well as LaSalle, Able Baker Fox, his solo material and even his first band ever. Along the way, Reed discussed booking noted punk bands at a rural Michigan community center as a high schooler, memorable Small Brown Bike tours with Hot Water Music and Cursive, and how his approach and expectations he has for 84 Tigers differs from his past projects. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and 84 Tigers ("Kingdom Of One").

Often compared to Small Brown Bike, Hot Water Music and Jawbreaker, Jason Kindrachuk, the band’s guitarist/singer, talks to Bob and Bobby about the band’s origins in the prairies of Regina, Saskatchewan and how each band member migrated individually over 1700 kilometers to reform in Vancouver. This week on Episode 57 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Episode 2 of Dying Scene Radio), Bobby prepares for a “blizzard of epic proportions” in Connecticut, while Bob sits at home in Florida wearing shorts and a T-Shirt. Together, they plow through another week’s worth of new music and highlight this week’s happenings, as reported by dyingscene.com. BAND SPOTLIGHT: Things Change This week’s BAND SPOTLIGHT is on the Canadian punk rock trio, Things Change. The conversation turns to breaking into the Vancouver music scene and how Things Change gained their Facebook following of teenage girls who have recently broken up with their boyfriends. Bobby gets up close and personal with Damn Broads, an all-female punk band out of Torrington, Connecticut. The interview is conducted on-location at Snapper Magee’s from the stage where the ladies recently shot a new music video for their song, “I’m A Fake”, which can be heard here. While drinking shots of Jameson, these hardcore hunnies talk about playing nazi-bars and writing songs about the Westborough Baptist Church, while Bobby reveals his love and admiration for Mariah Carey…and that was only after the first round! You can watch the interview in its entirety on the DSR YouTube page. …Never forget the BliZZard of 2015.
