In this episode of Apptivate's new gaming series, Farhan Haq returns to the podcast to share his expertise on monetizing mobile games. What intel from your user base could be generating a ton of revenue? In-app purchases versus rewarded video ads? Where are the opportunities for game developers in markets around the world? Farhan answers these questions and more. Farhan is the founder of Hyper HQ, a consultancy for user acquisition and ad monetization for mobile games. Prior to launching Hyper HQ, Farhan was the Head of Growth at SYBO, a mobile game developer in Denmark, the Head of User Acquisition at Nanobit, a mobile game developer in Croatia, and a Product Marketing Manager at Social Point, a mobile game developer in Spain. Questions Farhan Answered in this Episode:What inspired you to start your own consultancy? What are some of the monetization strategies you used with Subway Surfers to convert users that typically play for free? How did the feedback from the Subway Surfers community inform how you marketed the game? Is there a way to make sure you're feeding users age-appropriate content? Do you have different marketing strategies for different countries and regions? Have you seen any trends in terms of what games might see better adoption in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions?Where do you think the mobile gaming space is going and where is creativity going to be coming from in the future? So we don't really look at game time, or time played, but more on the retention metrics because that gauges how often you have opportunities to make money out of your customer base.”(19:46-20:09) “And now, also the big one [to market mobile games] is Africa because of the fact that there are so many people getting mobile devices. It's got to be a market that's relevant. Of course, the lifetime value there is tiny at the moment, but if you have so many hundreds of millions of potential customers, if you can get that large base, and as the LTV starts improving, you're going to be able to make a lot of money.”Mentioned in this Episode:Farhan Haq's LinkedInHyper HQ

Eva Juretić is the Growth Marketing Manager for Pocket Worlds, a metaverse mobile game developer company pioneering social-first gaming. Eva is also the Senior UA and Growth Manager of her consulting company, ClickBite Consulting. Previously, she was the lead of the Growth Team at Misplay and a user acquisition specialist at Social Point. Questions Eva Juretić Answered in this Episode:Have you always identified this game as a metaverse platform? Have you seen a rise in user growth that you can correlate to the explosion of “meta” and “metaverse” as a concept? What does it mean to integrate blockchain into High Rise? What's changing from a consumer perspective? How do you educate your users on NFT, if at all? Will it cost cryptocurrency to acquire an NFT?How do these advancements and changes related to blockchain technologies affect your role and how do you think about driving growth?Timestamp:4:30 Eva's professional background14:04 About Pocketworlds and social-first gaming16:10 The explosion of “metaverse” in branding17:22 Play and earn: Introducing blockchain technology18:48 Cashing game currency - the first NFT drop21:33 Educating users on NFTs23:00 Buying NFTs with cryptocurrencies24:15 Giving users ownership with blockchain25:22 How will blockchain tech affect how marketers drive growthQuotes:(14:15-14:49) “Pocket Worlds is pioneering in social-first gaming, which means the social part of the game is the core part and the game is built around it. Unlike, for example, if you have an RPG game, they test the idea, the concept, the product; they see it's working, and then eventually they add some social components like chat or whatever it is. In Pocket Worlds, in High Rise, the main app we're talking about, this is the core of the game. The game wouldn't exist without that social component.”(17:59-18:15) “Us entering that space and introducing blockchain technology into everything, it's not only making the now popular ‘play to earn' but a ‘play and earn' concept, and this is what we're most excited about.”(24:16-24:40) “So we have the economy, but we don't want to be the owner of that. We want our users to have ownership of whatever property they have. So if you have any items, outfits, rooms, whatever you have in High Rise, like we know that because we have it written in our database. But we really want our users to own it, and a way to do it is translating that on blockchain.”Mentioned in this Episode:Eva Juretić's LinkedInPocket WorldsHigh RiseHigh Rise Creature Club)

It does seem like there is always a hot social or political issue dominating the mainstream media and the social media streams. The question is, as a brand, what are you going to do about it? Are you going to publicly state your position or will you just keep quiet? The risk in making a public statement is that you may alienate a segment of your market. But according a Neilsen survey, 73% of millennials want to work for a company that is socially responsible. And 81% of millennials expect their brand to publicly state and commit to those social causes. So, if you have a millennial customer base, maybe it's time for you take a stance? #movements #corporatesocialresponsibility #millennials

We recently hosted a webcast conversation between Lean Startup Co. Faculty Member Elliot Susel, and Aviv Stern, Chief Data Officer at Social Point, a gaming company, to discuss using lean analytics in mobile game development. Don’t have time for the full webcast now? Catch the webcast highlights and tips from their conversation in our companion blog below. Aviv got started working for Fortune 100 companies in a corporate environment in data back when data analytics was called “business intelligence,” he said. No matter what you call it, Aviv said the goal of analytics is finding a way to use data to benefit a business. Aviv praised the Lean Startup method for being intrinsically data driven, a good selling point when you’re trying to convince founders or a small product team to invest in data analytics. “Each of the stages, like build, measure, learn, has integrated into it [a] data-intrinsic approach,” Aviv pointed out. Convincing product development teams to do A/B testing early on—in which you put out two versions of a product or service and see which version is better—can be a challenging battle, Aviv said, so Lean Startup is a great approach to take. Aviv came to Lean Startup after what he called a typical startup experience, “the failing kind” that was also educational. After bootstrapping a data science app for about a year that “we were sure was going to change the world” only to have it fail, it led Aviv to ask how they were developing solutions. “That’s how I found myself really shifting the approach I had…to be much more lean, really focusing very early on validating,” he said.
