Together with Dive, one of our Open Gaming Research Initiative partners, we're exploring the topic of data and games through a limited podcast series called “Data Corner.” This episode is the final segment of this mini-series, so we decided to focus it on a fascinating future-facing topic — AI Analytics.According to Gartner's Analytics Ascendancy Model, there are four types of analytics that sharpen hindsight, reveal insight, and create foresight:1. Descriptive analytics, which explain what happened2. Diagnostic analytics, which explain why it happened3. Predictive analytics, which explain what will happen4. Prescriptive analytics, which explain how one can make it happenFrom a gaming analytics standpoint, gaming studios of all sizes and analytics capabilities live on various points of this framework and employ each of the four analytics types to varying degrees. However, AI has the potential to act as an exoskeleton here and elevate all aspects of this framework. To discuss all this and more, we're joined by Elad Levy, founder and CEO of Dive, Daniel Berdichevski, Playtika's ex-VP of Data Science and Products (now a Data Management Consultant), and your host, Abhimanyu Kumar, co-founder of Naavik. We hope you enjoy the last episode of the Data Corner. Please send any thoughts, feedback, and questions to podcast@naavik.co.We'd also like to thank Pragma for making this episode possible! Can you play games and save the planet? Maybe, with Dots.eco's new rewarded ad experience that isn't like anything else I've seen. Wooga, Wild Life, and Playtika are using it, so I thought it'd be worth checking out. Maybe you will too :-) In this episode, host John Koetsier chats with Dots.eco chief growth officer Daniel Madrid. Episode summary Dots.eco is a platform that offers real-world environmental rewards to incentivize players in games. The platform allows players to engage in activities such as planting trees, cleaning plastic from the oceans, and saving sea turtle babies while playing their favorite games. The cash for these rewards comes from game publishers and other businesses who pay for the impact. By integrating these environmental rewards into games, publishers can increase engagement, retention, and monetization. Dots.eco has seen significant growth and has partnered with major gaming studios and brands to implement their platform. The results include improved player satisfaction, increased transactions and revenue, and enhanced brand reputation.
In this week's episode, Xander and Warren really dive into the nitty-gritty of current events. First, we discuss AppLovin's new Vessel app – a marketplace where mobile game developers can integrate NFTs into games to drive engagement and revenue. This sits at the intersection of three huge areas of focus for us: Web3, mobile games, and performance marketing. It's exciting news – and also interesting in the fact that AppLovin has managed to work within Apple's strict policies to bring an NFT marketplace into the App Store. Next we discuss Google's announcement that Stadia will be shutting down in January. The cloud-gaming service has struggled to gain traction, but the company believes the technology will be useful in other areas of its business – such as with industry partners, YouTube, Google Play, etc. Google will be refunding all Stadia hardware, games, and add-ons purchased through Stadia's store. In another gaming goodbye, Playtika is shuttering Best Fiends maker Seriously – supposedly over discord and clashes between the studio and its parent company on aggressive monetization, budgeting, and other issues. Leaks regarding the fallout seem to heavily favor Seriously, which likely indicates they came from sources within the studio. An article from Mobilegamer.biz promises that a new studio will "rise from the ashes" in coming months. Shifting to incoming games, we highlight the release of Overwatch 2 and it's interesting pivot into a completely live-services model. The game is also doing away with loot boxes in favor of a new in-game shop that uses in-game currency. It's been a long time coming, but that's not surprising given everything Blizzard has been through in the last few years. Finally, we end on the news that App Store net revenue declined 5% year-over-year for the month of September – a record low for the store. The news was highlighted by Stephanie Link and retweeted by Eric Seufert, who noted that "ATT wreaked havoc on the mobile gaming market, which comprises the vast majority of App Store revenues. The growth of Apple's ad platform, substantial as it has been, was not sufficient to offset that loss within the broader Services category." It was after he had worked 3 years as an investment analyst with Bear Stearns and spent more than 2 years inside the corporate strategy bullpen of The Walt Disney Company that Craig Abrahams decided to head to business school. However, Abrahams says that unlike many of his future classmates, he had made up his mind that hedge funds, investment banks, and strategy consulting firms would not be on his preferred menu of postgraduation career opportunities. “I wanted an opportunity to work really hard and stand out but also to go somewhere a little bit different, where I wasn't competing with 10 versions of myself,” explains Abrahams, whose earlier experiences at Bear Stearns and Disney had left the MBA student searching for a less traditional route to career success. Observes Abrahams: “I was looking for a place where I personally could have an impact.” That place became Las Vegas, where upon graduation Abrahams joined Caesars Entertainment as a director of broadcasting and new media. “This was about putting myself in a position where I would be in the right place if an opportunity came along,” comments Abrahams, who within 6 months of joining the gaming giant was tapped to help launch Caesars Interactive Entertainment. “I remember when Gary Loveman, the CEO of Caesars at the time, said to me, ‘There's an opportunity to work on a business plan to create a new entity,' so that opportunity fell into my lap,” remarks Abrahams, who had served in a number of corporate development roles before advancing into the new entity's CFO office. It was as CFO of Caesars Interactive that Abrahams first became acquainted with a small Israeli company that had a megahit mobile game known as Slotomania. Caesars was smitten and in 2011 acquired the Israeli firm, Playtika. Over the next 5 years, Caesars Interactive invested more than $300 million into the business, which allowed Playtika to complete a series of acquisitions that led to the sale of the company for $4.4 billion in 2016. “This was just the first step in the evolution of Playtika,” explains Abrahams, who joined the newly private firm as CFO in 2019 and subsequently spearheaded a debt raise of $2.5 billion. The company was able to pay investors a dividend before management became focused on taking the company public, a goal that would be realized early in 2021. –Jack Sweeney

At the end of the episode, we give a short wrap-up of season 3 of the podcast - as this is the last episode for the season - and we focus on what we learned and what are the key topics, in the context of organizing at scale, that are on our minds. We cover the seemingly ramping importance of modularity and composability in markets - also check out this piece - https://boundaryless.io/blog/towards-modular-and-composable-markets/ - that captures some of the ideas - and some additional thoughts around the questions concerning our relationship with technology, adopting a regenerative mindset and convivial organizational models. The sudden rise of the weight companies put on cross-promotion is of course due to the IDFA deprecation that has to some extent further accelerated consolidation in the industry. Gigi is one of the most appreciated, sharp and talented investors in the Israeli startup scene, but also abroad. He is a GP at NFX together with James Currier, Pete Flint, Omri Drori & Morgan Beller. After being a pilot in the Israeli Air Force, Gigi founded several startups, such as Playtika (acquired for $4.4 billion), Ridge, Beach Bums and more. He used to be CEO of 888 Holdings, one of the world's frontrunners in the gaming industry. Gigi invested in startups such as Komodor, Mammoth Biosciences, Kenshoo, MyHeritage and countless others. He also serves as an advisor on the board of several organizations, such as MEET - Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow. Gigi candidly shared with me his personal journey. The CEO Persona We spoke about the complexity embedded in the CEO role - the costume you wear, and how that sometimes gets confused with the real you. We shared how as a young CEO - he was managed by his ego, with no compassion and forgiveness, and how important it is for a CEO to learn to put his ego aside and really listen to others. Being forgiving to himself and to others is something that he takes with him into the investor position. In Silicon Valley - both the founders and investors use a language which nurtures a complex threshold of expectations - they are all “killing it”. They should not show weakness, which brings a lot of misery, and literally “killing it.” Now - it doesn't mean that you should share your weakness with everyone - but you should do it with your inner circle and close peers. The Investor Persona Gigi sees his role as the sounding board of the entrepreneurs he invests in. Once they share their truth - it's a ‘Protected Zone,' and they can rest assured that it stays there. Gigi and the other NFX GPs don't insist on being on the board, but they insist on being the last conversation prior to the board. Sometimes, it's also ‘tough love' - as this is what they need to hear at that moment. Gigi believes that as investors - they should be grateful to have been chosen by the founders to join their journey. The founders are generally brilliant, hungry, energetic and sacrificing a lot in this path. It's not ‘our' company - it's theirs. For him, the lowest of lows - is to find out he picked the wrong entrepreneur. Founders' Psychological Traits Gigi has seen more than 10,000 entrepreneurs over the years. In different verticals - different traits are needed. But, there are psychological aspects that are true for entrepreneurs in general. Founders are a mix of inherent contradictions Optimism - they never believe they'll fail They must have an elastic and agile mind, so they can reconvene new directions when needed Be open and transparent Crystalize a clear vision & WHY Be data-driven decision-makers Entrepreneurs can be either arrogant & loud or insecure & quiet; the range is surprising. However, both types can be great entrepreneurs. Decision Makers - “Move Fast and Break Things”Speed is one of the main character traits founders should have, whilst being willing to accept failure. If you make a mistake>>you fix>>iterate>>move. Speed needs to be balanced with the quality of decisions - especially when it comes to recruiting talents. Gigi shares his personal growth from being the smartest guy in the room, telling others what to do, to being the mentor that thinks together with them. He likes providing them with tools to make decisions and letting them make their own. That has a lot to do with the concept of parenting and how we educate & mentor our children and founders. Gigi sees the cherry on top of his role as an investor in helping the entrepreneurs balance their psychological traits, is learning how to wear the various costumes when needed. More importantly, it is knowing when to leave them aside. For Gigi, what helped him more than all in his personal growth journey - was learning from failures. Failure, the way he sees it, is a call to reach a higher level of consciousness. A “wake up call,” an opportunity to better ourselves.

Arnd Benninghoff (EVP, Modern Times Group) and Shaun Rutland (CEO, Hutch) join the podcast to discuss MTG's corporate strategy. MTG is one of the top consolidators in the industry having acquired companies like Hutch, Inno Games, and ESL. MTG refers to their consolidation activities as "family building". Their growth strategy is founded around acquiring resilient game studios that have operated over years through the turmoil of the market. The acquired companies are usually mid to small size and without exception profitable. MTG doesn't offer any central resources - unlike Zynga, AppLovin, or Playtika. And the corporation wants founders to continue to not only head their companies but to also help to "grow the family". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/deconstructoroffun/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/deconstructoroffun/support
Zynga, Playtika, Tencent, Stillfront, Embracer, and many more are achieving fantastic growth through M&A. In many ways, acquiring gaming studios has become the norm for growth for successful gaming companies. Yet we tend to forget how volatile M&A tends to be. According to research and a recent Harvard Business Review report, the failure rate for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) sits between 70 percent and 90 percent when looking at all industries combined. In this episode, I'm joined by Lou Fasulo, former CEO of Z2, which was acquired by King in 2015 and shut down in 2019. In many ways, the acquisition of Z2 represents the more common way acquisitions tend to play out. After a bloomy dating period comes the honeymoon, which is followed by the challenges of functioning effectively as a part of a larger corp. As the challenges mount, the result is often the dismantling of the acquired entity. ---- LINKS: Secrets of Game Growth Level Up 2021 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/deconstructoroffun/support

And that is what the connection between you and the user is all about.”“For certain activities, we might even show an ad even the say after the install saying, “Hey, did you check out this feature? Did you get a chance to look at this?” So it kind of builds up the connection from day one, literally.Mentioned In This Episode:Playtika
