The Iron Claw - 311

Soul Forge Podcast

The Iron Claw tells the story of the professional wrestling family, the Von Erichs. Shawn and Leah just saw this film in theatres, and are here to share their thoughts on the movie, and recall their wrestling memories. Of the two, Leah is a bigger fan of wrestling than Shawn. She has met many professional wrestlers. One time, Shawn saw Hulk Hogan walking up some stairs. The bulk of Shawn's wrestling knowledge is from the mid-1980s to about 1991. Leah has had much more interaction in the world of wrestling, including going on a wrestling inspired cruise. The Iron Claw starts in the nineteen-sixties, when Fritz, a struggling wrestler, splurges on a Cadillac to foster an illusion of success, while imbuing his two young sons, Kevin and David, with a gospel of fanatical self-reliance that's also an imperative to be the “toughest” and the “strongest.” The movie's protagonist, and its occasional narrator, is the grownup Kevin, the family's oldest surviving son. Kevin's older brother, Jack, Jr., died in an accident at the age of six. Jack's death is one of the key reversals that shadows the family, leading to the pervasive, publicity-fuelled notion—one that the Von Erichs take grimly seriously—of a family curse. The heart of the drama begins in 1979, when Kevin is making a name for himself in the ring—namely, the Sportatorium, a small Dallas arena that Fritz owns and operates. “We loved wrestling,” Kevin reminisces in voice-over, and it shows, even as the rest of the movie depicts how that love was lost, along with many of the people he loved. “The Iron Claw” is as exuberant as it is mournful, and the high spirits of performance and achievement are inseparable from the price that they exact. Kevin is disciplined, focussed, and grounded; he's a vigorous and enthusiastic performer, leaping from the ropes, raging, slamming, punching, and putting on a show with the maneuver—the skull-squeezing Iron Claw—that made his father famous. But for Fritz it isn't enough that Kevin is locally successful; Fritz, who believes that he was wrongly denied the sport's heavyweight championship, lives for the day that one of his four sons—and, indeed, preferably all of them, in succession—will win that belt.  Fritz's pecking order is far more than merely professional. Because his very identity—as his family's protector, the redeemer of its name and the breaker of its curse—is bound to the prospect of his sons' successes in the ring, his professional favor is also a paternal popularity contest. At the breakfast table, Fritz unabashedly announces his ranking of his four living sons, adding that the ranking “can always change.” The young men, ranging from adulthood to adolescence, are competing, above all, for their father's love. James Beard Wrestling Promoter & Von Erich Family Friend The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who make history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports. ean Durkin's first two features, “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “The Nest,” have a manner that I'd describe as apologetic realism: there's something he's bursting to say, but he forces it into the confines of tightly crafted dramas. Those films have a tamped-down melancholy that hint at how much he's holding in check. He doesn't lay his voice on the line, but, by forcing his characters into frameworks with a too-clear point, he never seems to explore their lives fully, either. His third feature, “The Iron Claw” (which opens December 22nd), is different. In this group bio-pic of the Von Erich family of professional wrestlers, Durkin's brand of realism is even more rigorous, yet unapologetic. He still has plenty to say, but this time his characters do more than fit his ideas—they inspire his imagination, largely because they themselves are creators of fantasy. As presented by Durkin, the patriarch, Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany), has a chip on his shoulder the size of a sequoia, and he matches it with colossal dreams of vengeful success that overwhelm everyone in his life. The story starts in the nineteen-sixties, when Fritz, a struggling wrestler, splurges on a Cadillac to foster an illusion of success, while imbuing his two young sons, Kevin and David, with a gospel of fanatical self-reliance that's also an imperative to be the “toughest” and the “strongest.” The movie's protagonist, and its occasional narrator, is the grownup Kevin (Zac Efron, imposingly muscled), the family's oldest surviving son. (In real life, there were five at the time; Durkin cuts one, Chris, the youngest, out of the story.) But what does it mean for a pro wrestler to win? The movie makes the matter apparent, by way of a bit of dialogue that's dropped into the movie sweetly and aptly—in the sequence in which Kevin connects with Pam (Lily James), a determined and self-aware young autograph seeker with an ulterior motive. The scene of their meeting is one of the most charmingly written and performed romantic encounters of the year in movies (up there with the elevator encounter in “Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game,” which started the year in romance), and the date that follows is similarly witty, wry, and tender.

What'cha gonna do, Slackers!? Growing up in Connecticut meant living in the shadow of Titan Tower, aka the WWF. From Hulk Hogan, to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, wrestling has been part of my consciousness for as long as I can remember. But just like music, I always sought out any alternatives to the mainstream. This is when I discovered wrestling out of Texas, with guys like the Von Erichs and the Fabulous Freebirds…coming straight out of the world famous Sportatorium in Dallas, TX.After becoming a “lapsed fan” in the early 90's, I stumbled upon an odd show airing at 2:00AM on the local Spanish language channel: Extreme Championship Wrestling out of Philadelphia, PA. ECW! ECW! ECW! With blood, guts, profanity, and weapons galore, this crazy promotion forced the “big companies”, WWF and WCW, to move from child friendly programming into something with a little more “attitude”.Join me for this little barbed wire slice of 80's and 90's “'rassling”. It's enough to make you go, “Woooooo”!

We talk about ECW's House Party '96, which featured the farewell of Public Enemy, the return of "The Franchise" Shane Douglas, the debut of Rob Van Dam, and Beulah announcing her “pregnancy” with Tommy Dreamer's spawn. Needless to say, this was a watershed show in ECW history, so we go in deep detail discussing all the major happenings in the promotion at that time. We then go to WCW to discuss Hulk Hogan's legal issues in Minneapolis, plus another Nitro in the Carolinas where Hogan gets booed heavily by the crowd. From there, talk about all the international news and results before coming back to the U.S. for the indies, where we talk about Scott Bowden having quite the day on USWA TV, the early days of IWA Mid-South, and the infamous Bodyguards vs. Bandits PPV being taped at the Sportatorium in Dallas. We then close with the WWF where Shawn Michaels gives an…interesting speech at the Royal Rumble press conference in Fresno, plus the Billionaire Ted's Rasslin' War Room skits get wild in week 2, with this one pissing off a lot of people and becoming the talk of the wrestling world. Oh, and Steve Austin's debut as The Ringmaster airs on that very same edition of Monday Night Raw. "POLISH  POWER"Ivan Putski-(Jozef Bednarski)   Ivan Putski is a former professional wrestler and bodybuilder, best known by the nicknames "The Polish Hammer" and "Polish Power". Putski is a former WWF World Tag Team Champion with Tito Santana. He had a notable feud with Superstar Billy Graham over the WWF Championship, which led to many pose-downs, arm wrestling bouts, and long matches between the two. Other rivals included The Iron Sheik, Ivan Koloff, and Jesse Ventura, who would refer to Putski as "Puduski" when commentating for the WWF. Putski was the first Polish wrestler to perform in the WWF (now WWE). Putski wrestled his last match for NWA New Jersey as he defeated King Kong Bundy by disqualification on February 27, 1999. Early career (1968–1974) Putski won the NWA Texas Tag Team Championship with Jose Lothario twice in 1973.[1] Putski was a fixture on the Dallas-Ft. Worth wrestling scene and was one of its most popular personalities. He was routinely the feature act at The Sportatorium, a wrestling-only arena in an industrial section near Downtown Dallas. Putski's act consisted of being a happy-go-lucky, often aloof buffoon, who would "miraculously" pin his opponent. Putski was often introduced as a former concentration camp survivor, only adding to his sympathetic appeal to audiences of all ages. In mid-1974, Putski worked with the American Wrestling Association.[1] It his time in the AWA that Putski also first clashed with Superstar Billy Graham. Prior to leaving the AWA, Ivan dropped most of his weight by getting into bodybuilding. Ivan kept himself fairly trim at the 215 - 220 pound mark. World (Wide) Wrestling Federation (1974–1987) Putski debuted in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1974.[2] While in the WWWF, Putski feuded with many wrestlers, including Bruiser Brody, Stan Hansen and Ivan Koloff.[2] On June 25, 1976 at Showdown at Shea, Putski defeated Baron Mikel Scicluna.[1][5] Four years later on August 9, Putski was again victorious at the next Showdown at Shea, defeating Johnny Rodz.[1] He also resumed his feud with Superstar Billy Graham. On October 22, 1979, Putski teamed with a young rookie Tito Santana to defeat Johnny and Jerry Valiant to win the WWF World Tag Team Championship.[1] They held the title for six months before losing it to The Wild Samoans.[2] Putski worked in the renamed World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in the 1980s, primarily feuding with Roddy Piper and Sgt. Slaughter. He took a hiatus from wrestling in 1986. He soon returned to the independent circuit, also making occasional appearances in the WWF as a jobber to the stars. His last high-profile feud was in 1984 with Jesse Ventura. His final appearance was in 1987 teaming on television with Junkyard Dog and Superstar Billy Graham in tag team matches. He then retired from the sport. Other promotions (1981–1986) He began to slow down his career in the 1980s.[2] He won his last tag team championship in May 1981, teaming with Wahoo McDaniel to defeat Dory Funk, Jr. and Larry Lane for the SWCW World Tag Team Championship.[1] In November 1985, Randy Savage defeated Ivan Putski in the opening round of the Wrestling Classic.[1] Return to Wrestling (1991-1992) After his run in the WWF, several promotions, and his semi-retirement, Putski returned to the ring in 1991. Putski made an appearance for International World Class Championship Wrestling teaming with his son, Scott to defeat the Masked Iraqis. Also made an appearance for Global Wrestling Federation in 1992 teaming with Gary Young against Tom and Mike Davis in a no contest. Return to WWF (1995, 1997) In 1995, Putski was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame class of 1995 by his son, Scott.[2] The father-and-son team returned in July 1997 to defeat Jerry Lawler and Brian Christopher on Raw is War, in what would be Putski's final match. International Championship Wrestling (1996) In 1996, he joined International Championship Wrestling, as a face. He won several matches in the company, and he was billed as a tough guy.

It's 2020 and your Sports Lordz are back in our second decade of service with a brand-new episode! We start things off by looking back at Bowl season and the College Football Semifinals, where the LSU Tigers destroyed the Oklahoma Sooners, and the Clemson Tigers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes in controversial fashion. We break down both games and discuss some of the iffy calls, but the all-tiger championship game is set for January 13th, regardless of how Buckeye fans feel about it, and we give out always reliable predictions for which Tiger will reign supreme. We then look back at a few other bowl games including Jimmy's Bulldogs taking care of Baylor in the All State Sugar Bowl, Diego's Vols finding a way to rip victory from the jaws of defeat in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, and Kevin's Fighting Irish dominant performance over Iowa St. in the Camping World Bowl. We also add to our list of fun names and say goodbye to Tua Tagovailoa who is smartly heading to the NFL Draft. We then level up to the NFL and look back at Wild Card Weekend, which truly lived up to its name as three of the four road teams won. We're especially thankful the Aints lost in painful fashion once again. You love to see it. We then wrap the week in sports with an update from Papa John who has been very active on Instagram and has set a new challenge for himself. Later, we're joined in the Sportatorium by head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick and Patriots safeties coach, Steve Belichick for one of the most unsettling interviews ever (53:45). We learn all about their relationship as father and son, what the Belichick household, and get some predictions from two genius football minds. We continue our tradition into 2020 of wrapping up another classic episode with a nice round of DABS (1:15:23)!This episode is sponsored by Booger McFarland's Yolo Froyo! Ho! Ho! Ho-ly crap it's the last Sports Lordz of 2019! As is custom we look back at the week in sports starting with some NBA talk as there's an interesting bidder for naming rights of an NBA arena, the Milwaukee Bucks dominating on the floor but maybe not in the nickname department, our Hawks really struggling, a job opening for the Knicks, and L.A. domination. We then get into the world of football with Joe Burrow winning the Heisman Trophy, and the NFL. Kevin reviews the Bill Belichick and Nick Saban documentary on HBO, we look into the Patriots spygate 2, the Falcons crazy win against the 49ers, the NFC playoff picture and more. We then go international and consider how cool England is and how Brexit will affect the Premier League. Finally, we open up the hot stove as MLB is proving us wrong with an active offseason. We discuss some of the big names moving to new teams and scroll through Josh Donaldson's Instagram. Later making his return to the Sportatorium is the man of the moment, the king of Christmas himself, Santa Claus (55:23)! Santa tells us what he's been up to, how vacations were ruined for him and Mrs. Claus, and makes some sports predictions of his own. We close out the show with the final DABS of the decade. This episode is brought to you by the Bazungas.com! The Sports Lordz are back together at the Sportatorium with the latest classic episode of your favorite sports-comedy podcast! This week as we begin No Nut November, we look back at the World Series and give our reactions to the Washington Nationals winning their first ever championship.  With the baseball season over we transition over to the “hot stove” part of the year and look at some of the free agents available and what might happen. We then get into some college football talk and recap the “World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” and the huge win for Jimmy's Georgia Bulldogs and then preview the upcoming massive matchup between Alabama and LSU and look ahead at what the college football playoff could look like. We shift gears and look at the NFL at its halfway point with the Pats losing and the Dolphins winning, and talk some NBA where the Suns have risen and the Warriors have crumbled. We wrap up the opening segment by looking back at the death of Deadspin, the Ringer's desire to unionize, and give out our Lord Of The Week to musician and good friend of the show Aaron Schilb. We then break news as our contact inside the White House has once again sent us recorded audio from the Washington Nationals World Series celebration at the White House with the dear leader (check out episode 19 for Clemson's White House celebration audio). This is exclusive audio no one else has and that you don't want to miss! We conclude our return to form with a new round of DABS! This episode is brought to you by Kamala Harris' Fireside Chat Fundraiser at the UCB Theater in LA. This is a special episode this week for the 4th of July weekend where I had the pleasure of sitting down with former WWE/WWF superstar Del The Patriot Wilkes. Del was just on the Stone Cold Steve Austin podcast a week ago and was gracious enough with his time to meet with me. I did not want to rehash that whole discussion so we talked about some new things like his love for college football and what he likes to do during football season. He also talks about his days with the Global Wrestling Federation that operated out of the Sportatorium in Dallas.
