#186 No Competition So Far - Britini Haar, Cloud Peak Cultures

As we close the chapter on Wyoming foodpreneurs for this year, we end with an interview with Melissa Hemken of Central Wyoming College, who has been co-hosting this series. In addition to all she coordinates with Central, Melissa is founder of her own company, Melissahof Hatchery, a chick-raising farm that delivers healthy day-old chicks to local poultry farmers. “Hof” means “farm” in German. Living near Lander, Wyoming, Melissa discovered that rural expansiveness hindered the mail shipment of healthy day-old chicks. Recognizing that other Wyoming folks also need healthy chicks for their flocks, Melissa raises dual-purpose heavy breed poultry from which to hatch purebred chicks. When eggs are hatched into chicks, there is a 50/50 gender split. Most customers purchase the female chicks – called pullets, as they are looking to raise egg-layers. Melissa raises the rooster chicks, nicknamed the “McNuggets,” on pasture for the farmers who raise chicken for their meat. Now to our interview today, Britni Haar of Cloud Peak Cultures, a local kombucha clan of kid-friendly home brewers who are working their kitchen magic, conjuring another batch of fermented tea. Founded by Britni and Kandi Broersma, they are at the forefront of Sheridan, Wyoming's burgeoning kombucha culture as Sheridan's first commercial kombucha venture. Britni's journey began in 2015 when her family took a trip to China to visit friends. One of the friends had been taught to brew kombucha and shared it with Britni, who loved the beverage. It got her thinking she also could be brewing kombucha and when she got back to the US she started her research. Britni made the decision to buy the starter culture, called scoby, from a fellow kombucha brewer, rather than try to grow her own. She began brewing and the story is a familiar one: Britni gave some to friends who told her she could sell her brew. Then Kandi came on board to help with the business and in 2018 they started selling at the Sheridan farmers market with great success. That propelled them into selling at the local greenhouse farmers market, a year-round market. The business grew but life has its road bumps; Kandi had a baby, started home schooling and the business was too much for her to continue so Britni has been solo since. But that hasn't stopped her from expanding. Springboarding off her fermenting expertise, she has developed a line of fermented jalapenos used in the dip Britni also sells. Of course, Britni has expanded the kombucha flavors by blending different ingredients, huckleberry-lemonade being her favorite. Flavored drinks are made by letting the kombucha blend sit for about a week. Then the fruit juices are added and the brew sits for another three or four days. It self-carbonites then it is refrigerated. Alcohol content is not a fine science in the kombucha industry and Britni's brews are pretty much in line with other kombucha drinks. However, Britni does say her kombuchas are more mild and less tart than most commercial kombuchas. As for the future, Cloud Peak Cultures is covered under Wyoming cottage laws so she can sell her beverage without the heavy regulation. But if she wants to grow, that will be a game time decision. At present, Clout Peak Cultures is not her full time occupation, so she is contemplating her next move. Find her on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cloudpeakcultures/. In your attempts to share the Good News of the Christ, have you ever had someone put a halt to your advance and tell you that they "believe in God?" There are many views as what that belief might be that we need to probe so that the truth can be presented. Springboarding off of Point 3 in the Twelve Points that Show Christianity is True ("A theistic God exists"), this episode addresses the various views people hold about what kind of God they believe in. In this episode, I first define what we mean by biblical theism, and then move into addressing some of the popular "isms" that do not fall under the historical biblical of God. Those isms are: deism, finite godism, pantheism, panentheism, and even henotheistic polytheism. Many people have not given much thought to this question, and that is because the church is not teaching deeper on who God is. Think of it like this: If you say that God created everything but is not involved or does not intervene in the world, you might be a deist. If you say that God is everything and everything is God, you might be a pantheist. If you say that God is in everything and everything is in God, you might be a panentheist. If you say that God is not infinite but finite and beyond the world, you might be embracing finite godism. If you say that you believe in Jesus Christ, but believe that man can become a god in the afterlife you hold to polytheism. Please feel free to ask us questions about any of the views that you hear in this episode. You can send your questions to roblundberg315@gmail.com. He refuted the idea that Jesus was silent on the issue of sexual ethics; in fact, he intensified the already stringent sexual ethic of the Old Testament. Jesus's expectation for his people in marriage and sexuality—just as in all of life—is high. It requires the denial of one's own sinful, selfish desires in order to become who we were meant to be and receive life. It is a costly proposition. And it is always worth it.

In our culture today, many people "listen with their eyes and think with their feelings." Many of the cultural issues of our day place many people in the reality of subjective truth. Springboarding off our our first point that truth about reality is knowable (Point 1), we find ourselves making absolute truth claims. Those absolute truth claims cannot be both true and false at the same time. Truth by its very nature excludes its opposite. If you don't think so, would you feel the same way about things like your integrity, bank account, prescriptions from you physician, personal safety in hazardous environments, or getting wrong results from a True/False test? Making absolute truth claims or being the hearer of them is inescapable. On The Let's Get Real Podcast, we move to the second point of the Twelve Points Showing Christianity as True, the Opposite of True is False and the Law of Non Contradiction. The law of non contradiction states that opposite ideas cannot be both be true at the same time and in the same way. Any claim or viewpoint such as relativism and nominalism (explained in the show) results in contradictions and is always and necessarily false. Several governors have announced that they will lift lockdown orders using the advice they receive from scientists and doctors. But even though scientific knowledge is obviously relevant to a government’s response to a pandemic, can it offer policy guidance all by itself? In a recent episode of New Ideal Live, Ben Bayer and Gregory Salmieri discuss this very question: “Should government just ‘follow the science’?” Springboarding from several recent articles on the same topic, Bayer and Salmieri discuss how scientific information and expertise are not sufficient to ground the ethical and political value judgments at the basis of policy guidance. These value judgments are the subject of moral and political philosophy. This means that it’s philosophy that provides the basic tools for evaluating and applying scientific information. During the discussion, Bayer and Salmieri recommend several additional resources that highlight the value of philosophy and identify rational standards in morality and politics. These include Ayn Rand’s essays “Philosophy: Who Needs It,” “The Objectivist Ethics," and "Man’s Rights," and Onkar Ghate’s essay “Finding Morality and Happiness Without God.” Watch or listen to the whole discussion below. Springboarding off her deep-dive this week into the 11 books Tsh read on her month-long sabbatical, in this episode she chats with Andrea about how to keep technology in its proper place at home, and the different steps her family is taking to keep away screen addiction and prioritize healthy relationships. This idea comes from one of her favorite reads, The Tech-Wise Family by Andy Crouch.  Andrea talks about something similar — she’s recently realized that her smartphone used to be a portal for her creativity, but now it’s become a block. She chats with Tsh about why she thinks that is, what she plans to do about it, and the article written five years ago that changed her perspective on screens.   Related Posts: What I Read in July (On My Sabbatical) by Tsh The Question That's Saving My Creativity by Andrea Links From This Episode: Andrea on Instagram Andrea’s website Tsh on Twitter & Instagram The Tech Wise Family by Andy Crouch unGlue Google WiFi system 5 Benefits to to My Month-Long Screen Break by Tsh "Reboot or Die Trying" by David Roberts Ep. 94: Attention Spans "Here's Why Instagram Is Going To Hide Your Likes" "The Perils of 'Sharenting'" Become a patron and help make this show happen Sign up for 5 Quick Things, the weekly email Kindly leave a review For any links and codes from our lovely sponsors, head here Download the transcript for this episode You can find new episodes of Simple, completely ad-free, only on Stitcher Premium. Great Women in Compliance
Springboarding Your Success with a Book with Deena King

Have you ever thought of publishing a book on compliance? Deena King is the author of Compliance in One Page and is currently the Director of Compliance at Texas Woman’s University. Today on the show, she’s discussing her book publishing process and what it’s like working at higher education, as well as sharing her best advice for writing a book and springboarding your success.  On writing about compliance Deena was part of the team that designed the initial Brigham Young University compliance program. When she transferred to NV Energy in Las Vegas, she noticed that doing compliance at a university was similar to doing compliance at a utility and decided to document this pattern. This eventually became her book which she finished in 2015. Challenges in publishing No one really tells you how to write a book — so that was a challenge in itself — and because she was new to the compliance profession, Deena decided to self-publish. She learned tons about the many moving piece publishers take care of, from design to editing and beyond.  Her next challenge is self-publishing the second edition of her book, which she hopes will be out early in 2020.  Advice for aspiring compliance authors If you see something no one is talking about and you feel you can add to the conversation, write about it. Start with articles in magazines to help you get your thoughts together and give you some direction. Then write an outline for your book and go for it! Working at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) Being an educated woman is a big, important value for her. So while TWU in itself is a great university (and the reason she decided to take the job), the cherry on top was that she was going to be working for a university whose primary goal is to educate women. Soft Skills vs Knowledge Knowing how to work with people is an absolute must in compliance, as you will be working with all kinds of people in many different areas. You can’t live without soft skills. But the legal and regulatory foundations are important too, because content matters.  Advice for springboarding yourself to success When Brigham Young University was going to start their first compliance program, Deena knocked on her director’s office door, sat down, and said: “I think I’m really going to like this compliance thing. Can I be on this team? Can I help?”  If you’re willing to help people build something, somebody is bound to say, yes.  Just step forward and be proactive. Learnings from the CIA Deena used to work at the CIA  in a former life. The CIA would always use three — and oftentimes more — lines of defense when it comes to protecting data, and this is something she carries with her until today. She makes sure that when she’s protecting information, there are always multiple layers of defense. Resources Deena King | Compliance in One Page | The Ethics of Higher Education
