Conversations with Musicians, with Leah Roseman

Trumpeter, composer and conductor Stephen Burns is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Fulcrum Point New Music Project in Chicago. He has been acclaimed on four continents for his virtuosity and interpretative depth in recitals, orchestral appearances, chamber music, and multi-media performances. In this interview you'll hear him talk about some of his mentors including Arnold Jacobs, and Pierre Thibaud. Stephen Burns won several important competitions and awards which helped launch his solo career at a young age,  the Maurice André Concours International de Paris, but touring internationally brings challenges which he discussed candidly with me. Stephen has worked closely with Madeline Bruser and is a certified teacher in the Art of Practicing.  We talked about mindfulness, the importance of a  student-centered approach to teaching, the deep connection to your audience, programming innovative programs, and specific advice for not only brass players and musicians, but for all of us. It's Tuesday and we're fired up for another day in Retail Auto as we talk about the unfolding action in EV manufacturing. We discuss Lordstown Motors bankruptcy, the launch of the Silverado EV, as well as the moves Ford is making with its engineers. Show Notes with links:Ohio based Electric truck manufacturer Lordstown Motors has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is now  taking legal action against Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, accusing them of fraudulent conduct and a series of broken promises, including not abiding by an agreement to invest up to $170 million.Foxconn, best known for assembling Apple's iPhones, had previously invested about $52.7 million in Lordstown and holds nearly 8.4% stake. They stated that Lordstown breached the investment agreement when the automaker's stock fell below $1 per share. The company's flagship product, a pickup called the “Endurance” was plagued with fires during testing and CEO Stephen Burns resigned in 2021 after acknowledging overstatements of pre-orders for its electric trucks. The dispute could bring more scrutiny to Foxconn's electric vehicle ambitions and partnerships. Should Lordstown fail to find a rescuer, the once celebrated, Lordstown, Ohio factory now owned by Foxconn could attract overseas automakers wanting to build vehicles in the U.S.The Chevy Silverado EV is about to begin commercial production, promising a 450-mile range backed by a whopping 200+kWh battery. However, due to recent supply chain and economic pressures, Chevy is set to increase the initial $39,900 price point of the base model upon its 2024 launch.GM has closed orders for the truck as it begins to fulfill some of the 185k existing commercial orders. Production has started at GM's Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit, with customer deliveries expected to begin soon. The vehicle weighs 8500 lbs and requires 61 PSI in its tires. Its 200kw battery is 50% larger than the F150 Lightning long range battery and twice as large as the standard range. A Chevy Bolt has a 65kw battery. Carplay still works with a popup warning that it will be discontinued with future updatesIn the ongoing positioning of EV manufacturing, Ford Motor Co. is preparing to lay off hundreds of salaried engineers across all three of its divisions;  EVs, ICE, and commercial vehicles to boost profitability and cut costs amid its $50 billion transition to electric vehicles. Earlier this year, CEO Jim Farley said the company needed as many as 25% more engineersT.R. Reid, a spokesperson for Ford, stated, “We're not cost competitive. We have specific priorities and ambitions that have implications for skills, assignments and staffing needs. These changes are consistent with that. During a flight from Paris the other day, my friend David, who is also the owner of our new label Team Nowhere, listened to the podcast. When he landed, he called me and said, "I have figured out what you are doing with the podcast". Curious, I inquired, “What is it that I am doing?". With his usual wit, he replied, "This is not just an interview, it's a rock n' roll psychoanalysis!". In retrospect, I think he's right. As an interviewer, I'm always interested in the musical journeys of the artists I speak with. However, I'm also curious about our histories as artists because I think there's a link between personal history and art. The way I see it, art is a chemical reaction that is formed by our upbringing, our environments (private and public) as well as the things that happen in the world. By asking my interviewees their personal stories, I try to unearth what led to their art. My experience has shown that it begins even before they are born more often than not. Cosmo Gold traces its lineage back to Emily Gold's grandparents. Her grandmother was singer Marni Nixon, who famously dubbed Natalie Wood's singing parts in West Side Story and Audrey Hepburn's in My Fair Lady. Her grandfather, Ernest Gold, was an Austrian-born composer who won an Academy Award for his work on the movie Exodus. That's quite a musical heritage! In Emily's case, her music is even more closely tied to her dad's, Andrew Gold's. He was not only a talented musician but also a passionate UFOlogist, which, as we'll see, had a significant impact on the music of Cosmo Gold. As well as making music for himself, such as the recently resurrected viral mega-hit "Spooky Scary Skeletons," Andrew Gold has contributed to the hits of others like Linda Ronstadt. Cosmo Gold embraces Andrew's musical freedom and sci-fi appetite. A pop space odyssey, Krong, their debut album, is a concept album about a friendly alien who abducted the band and taught them the secret to a peaceful civilization. The band is grateful to Krong for teaching them the virtue of doubt. In a world of self-confidence, entitlement, and where feelings take the place of facts, it seems wise indeed. Aside from the beautiful message and homage found in Krong, there is also a real sense of musicianship. Krong's arrangements show the band's skill and maestria. Compare the stripped down live version of Krong they taped in our studio with the album version, and you'll see what I mean. Founded in 2019, Cosmo Gold is an LA-based alt-pop band featuring Emily Gold (vocals, guitar, synth, keys), Mike Deluccia (drums, synth, keys, guitar), and Stephen Burns (bass, guitar, vocals). You can fly to Krong on any platform of your choice and escape our world. https://www.instagram.com/cosmogold4real/?hl=en https://linktr.ee/cosmogold Call Krong:

The Europe of Europe, getting into music through getting in trouble, and making an album for a cat. Stephen Burns (Triptides, Cosmo Gold, Little Rituals) "TRIPTIDES is a Los Angeles based psychedelic rock group led by multi-instrumentalist Glenn Brigman. It began in the summer of 2010 as a series of sun-drenched home recorded tape machine experiments. The band has since released six full length records and a number of singles and EP's. Whenever I have mentioned his name in musical circles the reactions are often mixed…but I have long understood that in the arts such a reaction more often than not means I've struck intellectual gold. Beneath an often-misunderstood character, is an intellect of such massive value, that what should shock American trumpet players is that he isn't more widely lauded as one of the best American trumpet players of the 20th and 21st centuries. I am happy he has joined the Faculty at DePaul, and would encourage anyone entering this dying industry to consider joining his studio, it might give you a fighting chance. I often talk about how arts institutions have clearly shown an inability to change with the times. This has led to a curious phenomenon; we can all agree that the industry has cancer…but the institutions are trying to treat their mortal disease with essential oils instead of chemo-therapy. In their plight to find out what content is relevant they have lost track of the fact that this is a zero-sum game. As Steve well puts it emotion is ALWAYS relevant. Wagner will always be relevant, our mistake is to think that Wagner depends on the Metropolitan Opera to survive…it is the institutions that are spelling out their demise, not the content. Few people I know are as articulate as Steve about the trends we see as normal in classical music today, but which are actually a disruption from the nature of the art form from the 1500s until the beginning of the 1900s. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Stephen Burns, CFRE is the Director of Institutional Advancement at Lansdale Catholic High School which is part of the oldest Catholic school system in the country. As Stephen edges closer to the end of his first decade in fundraising, he is asking whether the way we train fundraisers and the role we afford technology in this process aligns with the task we give them. Our conversation begged the question of whether our approach to developing talent is all wrong and what we might do to change that. Stephen has noted that some technologies create a lot of busy work and provide easy cover for those who are hesitant to interact directly with their donors. Complicating this fact, much of the training and credentialing process for young fundraisers focuses on what can be taught in a classroom and overlooks the importance of what can only be learned in the field. At a time when meaningful conversations with donors are critically important, I was especially encouraged by Stephen’s insights. As mentioned during the outset, Responsive's recovery plan is now available for download here (https://lnkd.in/dyhvmPv). We are very grateful to all those who contributed to this free resource.
