The episode kicks off with Dr. Lalvani's poignant thoughts on the paradox of segregating children to foster a sense of belonging, asking difficult questions about educational environments that fail these students. This podcast episode is an insightful dive into the history and ongoing challenges of parent advocacy in special education.Dr. Priya Lalvani shares her extensive research on ableism in education, uncovering systemic resistance parents face when fighting for inclusive educational practices. This episode is a must-listen for educators, policymakers, and advocates passionate about genuine inclusion, as it delves deeply into the responsibilities and challenges of creating inclusive spaces for all learners.Complete show notes + transcript: https://mcie.org/think-inclusive/battle-fatigue-the-fight-for-inclusive-education-with-dr-priya-lalvani/Key Takeaways:Segregation vs. Inclusion: Dr. Lalvani questions the logic behind segregating students with disabilities to create spaces of belonging, advocating instead for transforming existing educational environments to become more inclusive.Parent Advocacy and Systemic Challenges: The history and current landscape of parent advocacy in special education reveal systemic barriers that make the fight for inclusion strenuous for families.Battle Fatigue in Advocacy: Dr. Lalvani introduces the concept of "battle fatigue," describing the emotional and physical toll on parents as they continuously advocate for their children's rights in a resistant educational system.Privilege Disparities: The discussion highlights how disparities in privilege affect the efficacy of advocacy efforts, with certain families able to leverage resources and knowledge to push for change more effectively than others.Policy Recommendations: Practical solutions, such as improving professional development for educators on IDEA and inclusive practices, could shift the current paradigm towards more effective inclusion.Resources:Undoing Ableism: https://bookshop.org/p/books/undoing-ableism-teaching-about-disability-in-k-12-classrooms-susan-baglieri/ Battle Fatigue: Parents, Institutionalized Ableism, and the “Fight” for Inclusive Education: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15407969241259365Thank you to our sponsor, IXL: https://www.ixl.com/inclusive Hosted on Acast. In episode 96, host Dr. I. David Daniels speaks with Dr. Heliana Ramirez about the “Workplace Battle Fatigue” of workers in toxic workplaces. Workplaces with chronic exposure to psychosocial hazards can be not only psychological but also physically harmful to those exposed. A toxic workplace is one where workers feel psychologically unsafe, disrespected, or threatened. It can include negative behaviors such as bullying, harassment, discrimination, and unethical behavior. Toxic work environments can also lead to burnout, health issues, decreased productivity, and high turnover rates. Those in toxic work environments may experience anxiety, depression, and stress and may take more time off or, in some cases, leave the organization either voluntarily or involuntarily. Dr. Ramirez will share not only her expertise regarding toxic workplaces but also the actual damage these workplaces can cause, particularly to members of marginalized populations.

“The most critical time in any battle is not when I'm fatigued, it's when I no longer care.” Too often we don't care, or that's what we tell ourselves.  We work really hard not to care because we've figured out that caring is just too risky, in whatever way it happens to be too risky for us.  We get the idea in our head that ‘not' caring is just easier, because we don't care.  Or it's safer, because we don't care.  We're not in a position to get hurt, because we don't care.  If things don't go our way it doesn't matter, because we don't care.  If something or someone fails us, there's no loss to us because we don't care.  And this whole mindset of not caring is not about not caring at all.  It's about protecting ourselves from the pain that we fear we'll experience if we do care. But, by assuming this self-protective position, we're doing something that we may not be thinking about at all.  We're retreating.  Basically, we're retreating from any situations that have caused us pain before, or from situations that we feel will cause us pain if we deal with them.  And in all that retreating, maybe there's a stance that we should have taken, or some action that we should have engaged in, or some decision that we should have stood in opposition to or in support of.  But we don't.  We don't.  Instead, we retreat.  And we retreat because we've worked real hard to convince ourselves that we don't care, and we've done that so that we won't get hurt.  And therefore, the battle that maybe should have been ours, or the battle that we should have contributed to, or the battle that was critical for us or someone else is fought without us being in it.  Or worse yet, maybe it never got fought at all because we didn't show up to fight it.  And the loss that we incur, however we incurred it, is likely to cause a level of pain far, far greater than the pain that we were working to avoid feeling in the first place.  And in the end, there's a good chance that we'll end up caring that we didn't care.  And because we end up caring that we didn't care, we'll create a battle in the last place that we ever want to fight one…and that's within ourselves.

Editors Nicholas D. Hartlep and Daisy Ball will discuss their book, Racial Battle Fatigue in Faculty (Routledge, 2019) which examines the challenges faced by diverse faculty members in colleges and universities. Highlighting the experiences of faculty of colorincluding African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, and Indigenous populationsin higher education across a range of institutional types, chapter authors employ an autoethnographic approach to the telling of their stories. Chapters illustrate on-the-ground experiences, elucidating the struggles and triumphs of faculty of color as they navigate the historically White setting of higher education, and provide actionable strategies to help faculty and administrators combat these issues. This book gives voice to faculty struggles and arms graduate students, faculty, and administrators committed to diversity in higher education with the specific tools needed to reduce Racial Battle Fatigue (RBF) and make lasting and impactful change.

This is profound when we think about Racial Battle Fatigue. This term explains the physiological and psychological harm that is a result of long term microaggressions, racism, and intergenerational trauma. This term carries a weight that, when confronted, has the potential to also help us open the doors to understanding and healing, which sets us on a better path to our human selves. Lepscier is an enrolled citizen of the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe and a first line descendant of Menominee and Stockbridge-Munsee communities. What do the Greenwood, Mississippi-based McGhee family, the KKK, and Marlon Brando have in common? Well, apparently the answer is Bob Zellner, civil rights activist and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's (SNCC) first white field secretary. In this variety session of Battle Fatigue, AJ recalls some of her favorite stories as heard from the living legend in the movement himself. We know that Black history is often one of violence and despair and it can be easy to forget that in times of crisis and survival, there can be pockets of joy and relief. How did Mrs. McGhee beat on a police officer in his place of business and get away with it? Why would you ever need to tell an episcopal pastor to shut up? Why does Marlon Brando go through so many shoes? Tune in to find out these answers and more in this multi-tale episode of "one day you'll look back on this and laugh. If the trauma lets you." The Hidden Cost of Being Black (BIPOC) in AmericaMay 25, 2021 marked one year since the murder of George Floyd. Around the country, people held services of remembrance. These commemorations came shortly on the heels of the trial of the man who murdered him, Derek Chauvin. For many people who are black and others, the vicious murder, the trial, and the commemorations are traumatizing. Watching the video of his murder as well as reliving this experience and other acts of violence against people of color (along with the day to day microaggressions) create anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.Join Rev. Dr. TLC and her guest, Dr. Rosell L. Jenkins as they discuss the impact of racism on black people and other people of color. Dr. Jenkins, a licensed psychologist, reports a rise in the number of patients who present with Racial Battle Fatigue (RBF) and other related symptoms. They will discuss what RBF is, its impact on the individual and the larger society, and treatment interventions. This is a conversation you don't want to miss!Tune in for this important conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Show NotesSegment 1The first segment opens with Rev. Dr. Terrlyn introducing the show and today's guest. Dr. Rosell L. Jenkins, licensed psychologist who reports a rise in the number of patients who present with Racial Battle Fatigue (RBF) and other related symptoms. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn then leads the first couple of minutes of the show with a prayer. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn then discusses the importance of remembering the murder of George Floyd, we must discuss what has happened in the past, whats happening now, and what will come. They are reminders that we are still standing, but also that the fight isn't over for people of color in this country.Segment 2The second segment starts with Rev. Dr. Terrlyn opening the conversation to how to deal with the day to day effects of racism on someone's mind and how to cope with it. Dr. Rosell says that she has noticed an uptick in the number of people seeking therapy. Dr. Rosell then explains the pandemic already caused an exuberant increase in people with depression, anxiety, and for the racial injustices to happen in the middle of already existing chaos, people lost all hope. You may even think apocalyptic. Dr. Rosell says that there has been a rise in suicide attempts relating to racial trauma. She says the mentality is that, “if this is what the world has to offer then I don't want any part of it.”Segment 3The third segment starts with Rev. Dr. Terrlyn asking Dr. Rosell how a person could feel more safe dealing with RBF. Dr. Rosell says being able to distinguish immediate threats or is this a side effect of thinking every person and everything is a threat. She says that to believe that it is but to ask questions. This will allow you to logically work through the situation and to determine if there is an immediate threat and how to solve it. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn says that you should stay vigilant, but don't have a constant stream of constant trauma triggers. This will cause a constant state of anxiety or panic. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn says there is a method and process to dismantle racism and we should stay diligent to stick to the method so real impact happens.Segment 4The final segment opens with Rev. Dr. Terrlyn opening the conversation to how to encourage people to get help for mental health issues they are dealing with. Dr. Rosell says that if you notice a loved one is acting in a way they have never acted before, that may be a perfect indicator for you to help that person get help. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn says that the upsurge in people needing therapy is so great that most people can't find one. Dr. Rosell adds that there are plenty of ways to seek out a therapist with specific conditions and that may help someone find the help they need.
