It's Tuesday and we're fired up for another day in Retail Auto as we talk about the unfolding action in EV manufacturing. We discuss Lordstown Motors bankruptcy, the launch of the Silverado EV, as well as the moves Ford is making with its engineers. Show Notes with links:Ohio based Electric truck manufacturer Lordstown Motors has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is now  taking legal action against Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, accusing them of fraudulent conduct and a series of broken promises, including not abiding by an agreement to invest up to $170 million.Foxconn, best known for assembling Apple's iPhones, had previously invested about $52.7 million in Lordstown and holds nearly 8.4% stake. They stated that Lordstown breached the investment agreement when the automaker's stock fell below $1 per share. The company's flagship product, a pickup called the “Endurance” was plagued with fires during testing and CEO Stephen Burns resigned in 2021 after acknowledging overstatements of pre-orders for its electric trucks. The dispute could bring more scrutiny to Foxconn's electric vehicle ambitions and partnerships. Should Lordstown fail to find a rescuer, the once celebrated, Lordstown, Ohio factory now owned by Foxconn could attract overseas automakers wanting to build vehicles in the U.S.The Chevy Silverado EV is about to begin commercial production, promising a 450-mile range backed by a whopping 200+kWh battery. However, due to recent supply chain and economic pressures, Chevy is set to increase the initial $39,900 price point of the base model upon its 2024 launch.GM has closed orders for the truck as it begins to fulfill some of the 185k existing commercial orders. Production has started at GM's Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit, with customer deliveries expected to begin soon. The vehicle weighs 8500 lbs and requires 61 PSI in its tires. Its 200kw battery is 50% larger than the F150 Lightning long range battery and twice as large as the standard range. A Chevy Bolt has a 65kw battery. Carplay still works with a popup warning that it will be discontinued with future updatesIn the ongoing positioning of EV manufacturing, Ford Motor Co. is preparing to lay off hundreds of salaried engineers across all three of its divisions;  EVs, ICE, and commercial vehicles to boost profitability and cut costs amid its $50 billion transition to electric vehicles. Earlier this year, CEO Jim Farley said the company needed as many as 25% more engineersT.R. Show #1400 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Thursday 10th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. 2024 CHEVY BLAZER EV WILL HAVE AN SS PERFORMANCE VARIANT - Chevrolet's Blazer crossover is going electric for the 2024 model year with the launch of the Blazer EV and a teaser video released today indicates a performance-oriented SS trim will be part of the lineup - The Blazer follows an onslaught of other electric vehicle announcements from General Motors, including the GMC Hummer EV and Chevy Silverado EV pickup trucks, all of which use the company's Ultium battery technology. - Earlier this year, Chevrolet revealed the first images of the Equinox EV, an electric SUV sharing the name of the company's popular compact crossover. - Chevy says that the Blazer will be the company's first EV to gain a performance SS badge when it debuts later this year. - The Blazer SS will go on sale in spring of 2023 Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a39384135/2024-chevy-blazer-ev-ss-performance-variant/ CHEVY TEASES ITS FIRST PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC VEHICLE, THE 2024 BLAZER EV SS - The automaker revealed little about the Blazer at CES, though, preferring instead to share details about the Equinox. Set to go on sale with an MSRP of around $30,000, the compact Equinox SUV will be a bargain by EV standards. Despite that, big screens and fancy technology will still be present, suggesting that Chevrolet is taking its transition to electric vehicles seriously. Original Source : https://www.carscoops.com/2022/03/chevy-teases-its-first-performance-electric-vehicle-the-2024-blazer-ev-ss GENERAL MOTORS PARTNERING WITH CALIFORNIA UTILITY PROVIDER PG&E FOR V2H PILOT - General Motors announced a new partnership with California utility provider Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) that will allow GM customers to use their electric vehicles as backup power sources for their homes. - As part of the pilot, PG&E and GM will test vehicles with bidirectional charging technology that can help safely power the essential needs of a properly equipped home. Bidirectional charging capabilities offer a higher level of electric resiliency and less reliability on the grid, especially during peak times. - The pilot includes the use of bidirectional hardware that's paired with software-defined communications protocols that will enable power to flow from a charged EV battery into a customer's home. The software will automatically coordinate between the EV, home and PG&E's electric supply from the street. - The pilot will test bidirectional power technology with multiple GM EVs. - Last month, Ford announced a partnership with San Francisco-based Sunrun, a provider of residential solar panels and home batteries that allows Ford F-150 Lightning owners to use their truck's substantial battery reserves as a home's emergency power source. - To use Ford's Intelligent Backup Power, customers will need to install the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System, which includes a power inverter plus a dark start battery and transfer switch, enabling two-way power flow between the home and vehicle. This caused the computer to think the car still had 10% of range left when in reality the main battery was already at 0%. - When the main battery died, the 12V Li-Ion battery was also dying Original Source : https://driveteslacanada.ca/software-updates/tesla-deploys-emergency-software-update-2022-4-5-12-to-calibrate-lfp-batteries TESLA CONFIRMS DELIVERIES OF GERMAN-BUILT MODEL YS ARE STARTING ON MARCH 22 - Tesla has confirmed that deliveries of Model Y vehicles built at Gigafactory Berlin in Germany are starting on March 22. - Last week, after months of delays, Tesla finally received its official building permit following the environmental approval of its Gigafactory Berlin project. - However, the approval was conditional on about 400 different conditions that the automaker needed to confirm. Surprisingly, German officials said at the time that they expected Tesla to fulfill all those conditions within the next two weeks. - March 22 will mark an important step for Tesla by starting deliveries of European-made vehicles and putting it on a path of better logistical efficiency. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/03/09/tesla-confirms-deliveries-german-built-model-y-starting-march-22/ BRANDENBURG TO MAKE WATER EXTRACTION ALLOWANCES FOR GIGAFACTORY  - After the permit for water extraction, which was found to be illegal and also affects the Tesla factory, Brandenburg wants to tolerate partial extraction. This would allow the public water supply to be maintained, the Ministry of the Environment told the DPA. - On Friday evening, the Administrative Court of Frankfurt (Oder) had declared the water permit issued in 2020 “unlawful and unenforceable”. - In a first reaction, the Straußberg-Erkner Water Association (WSE) had demanded that the state tolerate the water pumping until the procedure was made up for. - However, the 1.4 million cubic metres of water actually contractually guaranteed by the WSE for Tesla would only be needed when the carmaker in Grünheide has actually reached its full capacity of 500,000 cars per year. When that will be the case is still unclear. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/08/brandenburg-to-make-water-extraction-allowances-for-gigafactory TESLA MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ALLOCATION TO EUROPE FROM GIGA SHANGHAI IS SOLD OUT FOR 2022 - Tesla can't produce the Model 3 and Model Y fast enough to meet the huge demand. The situation is worst in Europe, where the customers rely on Giga Shanghai production allocation. In the case of Model 3 RWD and LR AWD, the estimated delivery time to Germany has jumped to February 2023. This is just shy of a full year away. - This is true for the customers in Germany, France, and United Kingdom. The waiting time is significantly longer than what people in the North American market are facing. For American customers, the same vehicles are promised to be delivered in May 2022, while the Canadians have to wait until August 2022. This time, the Ukraine war is cited as the root cause for production pauses. - The two premium German brands are joining BMW, Mini, and Volkswagen, all of which have been forced to idle plants across Europe. At the moment, March 18th is the project date for a return to normal activities however that could change at any moment. - One of the main missing parts of wiring harnesses which were made in Ukraine. Part production was halted once Russia invaded the country according to Automotive News Europe. - Mercedes-Benz has halted S-Class and EQS production at its Sindelfingen plant near Stuttgart. Benz's neighbours, Porsche, deferred Taycan output at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory. - Porsche specified that about 200 Taycans will not be built. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 26th January. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new PRODUCER GLEN MASON GENERAL MOTORS WILL BUILD A THIRD EV BATTERY FACTORY IN THE US General Motors announced a $7 billion investment in growing its electric vehicle manufacturing capabilities in Michigan, calling it “the single largest investment announcement in GM history.” The company will spend the money on four manufacturing sites, with plans to create 4,000 new jobs and retain another 1,000 in the state. The investment includes construction of a new battery cell plant in Lansing and the conversion of GM's assembly plant in Orion for production of the Chevy Silverado EV and the electric GMC Sierra. GM has said it will spend $35 billion by 2025 on electric and autonomous vehicles It's also a sign of GM's continued confidence in the growth of the EV market, despite representing only 3 percent of sales in the US over the last year. https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/25/22900729/gm-ev-battery-factory-invest-michigan-us G.M. has battery plants under construction in Ohio and Tennessee, and has retooled a plant in Detroit, where it recently started making an electric Hummer truck. It also plans to make electric vehicles at a plant in Ontario and at another in Mexico. G.M.'s new Michigan battery plant, like G.M.'s other battery plants, will be a joint venture between the automaker and LG Electric. It will be built on the site of an existing plant in Lansing, at a cost of $2.6 billion to be shared between G.M. and LG. G.M. will also invest $4 billion to enable a plant in Orion Township The company expects to add 2,350 jobs at the Orion factory and to retain 1,000 other jobs at the plant when pickup production starts. G.M. expects the Orion plant and the Detroit plant, known as Factory Zero, to eventually be able to make 600,000 electric full-size trucks a year. The company said that by the end of 2025, it planned to have a total annual manufacturing capacity of one million electric vehicles. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/25/business/general-motors-electric-vehicle-plant.html WHITE HOUSE TO HOST GM, FORD AMONG CEOS AT MEETING ON SPENDING PUSH The White House plans to host the chief executives of major U.S. companies including auto and tech sector firms on Wednesday to discuss President Joe Biden's signature $1.75 trillion Build Back Better legislation. General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Ford Motor (F.N) CEO Jim Farley Biden on Tuesday touted GM's announcement of a new $7 billion investment in Michigan, adding 4,000 jobs and boosting electric vehicle and battery manufacturing. Biden's proposal would increase the current $7,500 EV tax credit to up to $12,500 for union-made U.S. vehicles as well as creating a credit of up to $4,000 for used vehicles. The bill would also again make GM and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) eligible for tax credits after they hit the 200,000-vehicle cap on the existing $7,500 credit. https://www.reuters.com/business/white-house-host-ceos-spending-bill-push-2022-01-25/ PLANS FOR SECOND LG PLANT IN HOLLAND COMING TOGETHER, BUT NOT 'DONE DEAL' Despite dirt already moving on the site of a proposed expansion of LG Energy Solution's electric vehicle battery plant in Holland, Holland is still competing for the final blessing to be the site of $1.7 billion in investment from LG. The state of Michigan is expected to offer substantial incentives to LG Energy Solution for the project, but no official word on what those incentives will amount to is expected until a state board votes on the incentive package in late February. LG Chem's battery-making subsidiary LG Energy Solution is proposing building a second plant with the primary building, at 1 million square feet, even larger than the existing Holland plant. The total footprint of the proposed project is 1.4 million square feet. According to city documents, LG plans to hire 1,200 employees by 2025 to staff the second plant at an average wage of $50,000. Ever since LG Chem chose to build its first battery plant in Holland in 2010, city officials have known there was a chance for a second major investment in the city on land LG owns directly to the north of the current plant https://eu.hollandsentinel.com/story/business/manufacturing/2022/01/25/plans-second-lg-plant-holland-coming-together-but-not-done-deal/9208985002/ TESLA (TSLA) Q4 2021 EARNINGS PREVIEW Tesla (TSLA) is set to announce its fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 financial results tomorrow, January 26, after the markets close. As usual, a conference call and Q&A with Tesla's management is scheduled after the results. Earlier this month, Tesla confirmed that it delivered 308,600 electric vehicles during the last quarter. The Wall Street consensus for this quarter is $17.112 billion, and Estimize, the financial estimate crowdsourcing website, predicts a higher revenue of $17.416 billion. The earnings are more of a hit-or-miss since it depends on how much Tesla is spending that quarter, and with supply chain issues and cost increasing at new factories being brought online, it could be not as profitable despite record revenues. https://electrek.co/2022/01/25/tesla-tsla-q4-2021-earnings-preview-what-to-expect/ TESLA Q4 2021 EARNINGS Q&A – SAY.COM What's the current volume of 4680 cells?
