How is this a "strong" economy? June Jobless Rate Triggers Sahm Rule: Recession In this morning's US Bureau of Labor Statistics data release, the U-3 unemployment rate increased 4.1 percent in June 2024, rising by one-tenth of a percentage point above the forecast rate.  This uptick triggers the Sahm Rule, a real-time recession indicator, suggesting that the US economy is in, or is nearing, a recession. The Sahm Rule, developed by former Fed economist Claudia Sahm, is designed to identify the start of a recession using changes in the total unemployment rate. According to the rule, a recession is underway if the three-month moving average of the national unemployment rate rises by 0.50 percentage points or more, relative to its low during the previous 12 months. With the June 2024 U-3 rate of 4.1 percent, the average of the last three months being 4.0 and the lowest 12-month rate of 3.5 percent in July 2023, this criterion has been met. Sahm Rule indications (1960 – 2024)   While more data will be required to confirm the Sahm Rule indication, the impact of accelerating prices, interest rates at their highest levels since 2007, and commercially suppressive pandemic policies have probably caught up with US producers and consumers. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring one key issue currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, hosted by deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan. The Cambridge Dictionary defines "optimism" as "the quality of being full of hope and emphasizing the good parts of a situation, or a belief that something good will happen." Looking at war-torn Israel today, it is a quality that appears to be in short supply. But in this week's What Matters Now, The Times of Israel's senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur points out that while things look bleak now, there are several reasons for optimism. We begin the program by discussing Israel's 5th place on the annual World Happiness Report, which, in addition to self-assessed evaluations of life satisfaction, is also based on GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption. Incredibly, the self-reported Israeli data was collected following the October 7 massacre of 1,200 individuals and hostage-taking of 252 by Hamas terrorists and the resultant, ongoing war in Gaza. Even faced with a "negative outlook" by ratings agency S&P Global and Moody's Investors Service on the Israeli economy, Rettig Gur finds signs of economic optimism -- stemming from the Haredi community. So this memorial week, we ask Haviv Rettig Gur, what matters now? What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. Coming soon to corporate financial statements: a lot more tax transparency. After seven years and three rounds of proposals, the Financial Accounting Standards Board in December published new rules requiring companies to shed light on the income taxes they pay to federal, international, and state governments. The disclosure rules, which kick in as early as 2025, are a response to years of complaints that current financial reporting rules offer too few details about tax obligations. Soon, companies will have to separately list any jurisdiction that accounts for more than 5% of their total tax obligations. Publicly traded companies will have to further break down how they calculated their effective tax rate, so investors and other financial statement readers can contrast it with their statutory rate. Bloomberg Tax reporter Nicola M. White spoke with David Gonzales, a vice president at Moody's Investors Service, about what kind of details companies will have to provide and how investors and analysts could use them.
