My son leaves for college in August, so you can only imagine how much I have been reflecting on motherhood lately.I've been thinking back on all those joyful hours watching Tommy play soccer since he was three years old, and the sleepless nights worrying if he'll be okay as he changes and grows into the young man he is today. The essence of loving a child deeply reminds me of Elizabeth Stone's famous saying – “Making the decision to have a child – it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” These words have never felt more true than they do right now, and it has inspired me to re-release an early episode of the Cracking Open podcast with one of the fiercest and most radically loving mothers I know - the incredible Jodie Patterson.Jodie is an award-winning author, public speaker, advocate, and entrepreneur whose work spans communities as diverse as fashion and beauty brands, to media and entertainment organizations, to queer and BIPOC advocacy groups. In 2019, she became the first Black person elected to the role of Chair of The Human Rights Campaign Board, America's largest LGBT organization with more than forty years of experience advocating for the rights of this community. Her first book, The Bold World: A Memoir of Family and Transformation, was hailed by Alice Walker as “marvelous”, and since its publication in 2017, Jodie has spoken weekly on topics of identity, gender, race, and beauty, along with how they play out in family dynamics. In 2021, she published her second book, Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope. It has won several awards and was gifted to all public schools in the state of Kansas. The picture book was inspired by Jodie's child's pronouncement at the age of three, “Mama, I'm not a girl, I am a boy”, as well as Jodie's transformation into an unapologetic LGBTQAI advocate.Jodie's story has been featured in numerous daytime talk shows, evening news programs, national print publications, podcasts, and radio programs, including a short documentary produced by Cosmopolitan magazine that reached more than 11 million views and is currently used by the State of New York for diversity training of its employees. In 2015, Family Circle Magazine named her the #1 Most Influential Mom.She is a truly inspiring woman and mother, and the conversation that we share is both poignant and passionate. Jodie's voice is an important one to listen to if you want to experience the embodiment of true freedom in love and motherhood.Love,MollyPurchase Jodie's book The Bold World here, and Born Ready here Follow Jodie on InstagramMolly's next 3-month Cracking Open group coaching program starts in September 2024! Jodie Patterson sees herself as a Starfish - she has the ability to stretch far and wide and reach people as she does so. At 53, she has perfected the art through many careers, self-grown businesses, 5 children (currently spanning 30 - 14 years of age), volunteer work, art and a vibrant life of travel and friendships. Jodie is a Native New Yorker who grew up on the Upper West Side in a creative neighbourhood and an actively Black family. She comes from a long line of activists and entrepreneurs and continues this lineage with many successes along the way, clearly drawn towards women with strong voices who inspire, she embodies these qualities too. 'The Bold World' is one of the most striking and memorable books I have ever read. I cried, I laughed, I resonated and learned. It is Jodie's story of her life so far and the transformation of her family both immediate and extended. When her son, Penelope, came to her aged 2 and said, "Mama, I'm not a girl. I am a boy." it blew her world wide open. In this book, she shares just how. I am not letting go of my own copy but I am giving it out to everyone I know and you should too. This episode is not all about Menopause. It is about identity, creativity, community, freedom, curiosity, transition and transformation and how all of it is an inside job, "We can be who we are from the inside out." You can find Jodie on IG @jodiepatterson and https://jodiepatterson.com and you can find "The Bold World" wherever you choose to get your books. If you are in the UK, you may have to be a little more patient for it to arrive but it is well worth the wait :-)
When President Biden nominated former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley to be director of the Social Security Administration, Democratic State Senator Jill Carter from Baltimore said she couldn't support the president anymore, opening a view into the traumatic history of hundreds of thousands of illegal arrests during O'Malley's tenure as mayor of the city. Jill Carter talks to Sunil Dasgupta about what happened and how she was silenced and marginalized when she protested. Author of “The Bold World” and LGBTQIA+ advocate Jodie Patterson joins Carol to share her enlightening perspectives on gender, identity and parenting her five children, including her transgender son Penel. Carol and Jodie discuss how parents today can feel overwhelmed, confused and unprepared when it comes to discussing gender, sexuality and identity with their children. Jodie explains how she worked to expand her knowledge, perspective and language in order to become the mother that Penel–and all of her children–needed. Jodie talks with Carol about the importance of pivoting to meet your child's needs, and learning to parent in a way that supports your children while giving yourself room to reflect and grow. If your child's identity or perspective takes you out of your comfort zone it can be tough to find trusted resources and useful guidance. In this episode Jodie explains how she created the tools she needed, and how you can, too. I'm sharing a special preview of A Slight Change of Plans, a podcast all about who we are and who we become in the face of change. Dr. Maya Shankar is a cognitive scientist who is an expert on human behavior, and she's here to help us navigate the changes we all experience in our lives. She sits in intimate conversations with celebrity guests like Tiffany Haddish and Kacey Musgraves as well as everyday inspirations, like journalist Euna Lee, who was held captive in North Korea for 140 days, and Kate Bowler, a religious scholar whose own belief system was thrown into question after she was diagnosed with cancer. You'll also meet change experts — including leading grief therapist Julia Samuel, psychologist Adam Grant, and psychologist Ethan Kross – whose scientific insights will help us make better decisions and live happier, more fulfilling lives In this preview, you'll hear Maya in conversation with Jodie Patterson, a mother whose son came out as transgender when he was just shy of three years old. Jodie knew her son would face many changes ahead, but what she didn't anticipate was how much she would change, too. Jodie Patterson is an author, activist, beauty explorer, and mother of five. Jodie Patterson is an anomaly. The mother of five has co-owned New York's iconic, Joe's Pub; served as PR director for fashion designer Zac Posen; founded her own PR agency, and has launched two beauty brands. Everything changed when Jodie's then, 3 year old expressed that he was not a girl, but rather a boy. This propelled Jodie on a journey of learning and unlearning much of which she chronicled in her memoir, "The Bold World". Jodie now has dedicated her work to advocacy and educating community on subversive parenting. Listen in as Jodie and I have a refreshingly honest conversation about moving without fear, navigating life after divorce, and our obsession with rap lyrics.
Jodie Patterson's memoir quickly became one of Zibby's 2020 - and all time - favorites. Listen to conversation for standout insight on transformation, blended families, and more. "We have to discuss and debate with decorum and then shoot some basketball together at the end of the day" perfectly encapsulates Jodie's brand of brilliant advice.
Activist, Author and Entrepreneur Jodie Patterson joins Laura and Johnnie to speak about the #AllBlackLivesMatter movement, which includes the lives of Black LGBTQ+. Jodie also explains why she’s raising her own 5 Black children to be activists, including her trans-son. She reveals details of her own divorce, and she predicts that the current generation of children is the “...last generation to be f#C%ed with," as they mature and demand social changes that their parents were unable to accomplish. For the month of October, we’re kicking off a new theme: bullying. Bullying is a serious topic and we have a ton of interviews lined up to take a look at it from all sorts of angles — from what makes a bully, why the bullied take on a defensive role, to the experiences each side experiences. A lot of the times what happens with someone who takes on the bully role is that the people they are surrounded by don’t see them as who they could be but instead see them as some small element of who they are right now — and they become trapped. When someone is around people who are constantly pointing out a particular weakness to them, they start believing it too. And as our guest today, Jodie Patterson, says, “The world is unkind to people it doesn’t understand.” Jodie Patterson is a mother of five, an activist, an author, and a speaker. As an active LGBTQAI advocate, her activism has been recognized by the likes of Hillary Clinton, GLAAD, Family Circle magazine, Cosmopolitan magazine, Yahoo, Refinery29, and numerous other outlets. She also holds the position of Board Director with the Human Rights Campaign and works closely with HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. In today’s episode, Jodie brings an incredible story about her son who was born biologically female. At just the age of three, he was able to articulate to her that he was not a girl. But before this moment, he often lashed out and was misunderstood because he was misunderstood. Jodie breaks down the notion that “Bullies are bullies because they are bullied,” explains the importance of encouraging your children to do what they love regardless of the labels the world may put on them, and what having “family values” actually means. We also share some of our own experiences with our children around the themes of bullying, labels, and embracing ‘weird.’ “Having children is the fastest and most direct way to understanding yourself. Through my kids, I’m able to see my flaws and my strengths, and ultimately get closer to my true and most beautiful spirit. There’s no hiding with kids. They force you to either succumb or rise above.” — Jodie Patterson Topics Discussed: [:29] About today’s episode. [:59] Reading our review of the week. [1:36] Sophie reads a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson and we talk about how it relates to bullying. [6:10] We need to believe in ourselves in order to become who we want to be and taking space from others in order to grow. [9:55] More about today’s episode and how this topic deeply relates to our conversation today with, Jodie Patterson. [13:53] We’d love your feedback on this episode! Leave a review or tag us on social media and let us know what resonated with you. [14:20] About our IGNTD Glow Event! [18:26] The conversation portion of our podcast! [18:45] Reading an important quote from Jodie. [19:15] Jodie shares an important story that really illustrates this idea that we need to grow with our children. [23:50] How language minimizes the human experience and how we constantly have to redefine our understanding around words and labels. [25:38] Jodie explains discovering the flexibility of language and thought with her trans son. [28:00] Speaking about the negative affect from the constraints of labels and how this deeply impacted Jodie’s trans son for the first three years of his life. [32:22] Why Jodie’s son was a bully in a world that didn’t understand him. [32:25] Breaking down the notion that “Bullies are bullies because they are bullied,” and exploring why it isn’t always the case. [38:38] The importance of encouraging your children to do what they love and are interested in — regardless of societal norms. [43:00] Why “Weird is good!” [44:47] Sharing our own experience with our son, Leo, bullying others. [47:00] What changed after Jodie’s son vocalized that he was in fact a boy, not a girl? What did she do to help him find his place in the world? [50:45] Jodie gives her advice for trans children as well as their family and parents. [52:31] Talking about or journeys as parents and adjusting for our children. [56:33] The importance of diversifying the people you surround yourself with to broaden your language and experience. [1:00:00] Talking about bullying in today’s society, the concept of “othering,” and Jodie's approach: “mothering: a social architecture.” [1:02:45] What does having “family values” actually mean for your family? [1:09:25] What is the best advice Jodie has ever received? [1:12:02] What has been Jodie’s proudest moment to-date? [1:14:06] What has been Jodie’s most difficult moment to-date? On this edition of Fashioning Identity, we hosted a live panel at NeueHouse during New York Fashion Week with a special focus on intersectionality. The Fashioning Identity episodes examine one layer of identity – gender or race, for example – but the reality is many of us check off more than one minority box. As a result, these overlapping layers of identity create unique experiences and systems of discrimination that shape our lives. To explore this, we invited a guest from each of our past episodes to share their point of view on intersectionality and fashion’s role in it. Our panelists included social activist and author Jodie Patterson; journalist, producer, and speaker Noor Tagouri; Suited magazine founder, tailor, and designer Ash Owens; and Sneeze magazine partner and brand director Bradley Carbone. NeueHouse, the private workspace located in New York City and Los Angeles, is known for bringing together creatives and thought-leaders to dissect new ideas and, thus, provided an ideal environment to facilitate this important conversation. Host Sachin Bhola kicked things off with a discussion on the past and present state of inclusion in the fashion industry and why it’s been able to get away with the lack of it for so long. Bhola then probed into intersectionality and what that meant for our panelists. “I'm not even sure if people want to peel back all the layers,” Patterson commented. “I have a son who's a black transgender boy and I find that to be hard for people to wrap their head around. I'm a black woman who's lived hetero and I'm in a queer relationship now and people are like, ‘Well, what does that mean?’" We then wrapped up by considering what the future of fashion and identity politics looks like. This episode of Fashioning Identity was recorded live at NeueHouse, and calls attention to people with intersectional identities, how fashion overlaps with them, what people can do to influence change, and more. With the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and WorldPride happening this month, we turn our attention to LGBTQIA+ people and their relationship to fashion. To begin, Valerie Steele, the director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, discusses the role fashion has played for queer people throughout history. She references “A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk,” an exhibit she co-curated that was the first in-depth look at LGBTQIA+ contributions to fashion over the past 300 years. To get an understanding of the issues young queer people are facing today – and fashion’s role in telling their stories – host Sachin Bhola speaks to a few leading voices in the community. The first is rapper Taylor Bennett, who came out as bisexual in 2017. Next, Pierre Davis and Arin Hayes, the founders of streetwear brand No Sesso, weigh in on fashion’s commodification of sexual identity, particularly around Pride. To get the perspectives of people who don’t work in fashion, Bhola solicits the opinions of Jackie O and Mercy Kelly from The Hetrick-Martin Institute. One brand that has long been invested in supporting the LBGTQIA+ community is Gap, and its 2019 Pride campaign features author and activist Jodie Patterson. She talks about her chosen family and what she’s learned raising her transgendered son. We then take a global perspective on the LGBTQIA+ identity and talk to Ian Daniel, co-host and co-producer of Gaycation, who gives us a snapshot of queer people’s experience around the world and their relationship to fashion. This episode of Fashioning Identity examines the hardships and the triumphs of LBGTQIA+ people, thinks critically about the role fashion plays in their lives, and more. How we can celebrate and support a non-conformist, diverse “lab” of a family The beauty of self-identified labels that can promote fluidity and acceptance Why we struggle to distinguish body from spirit, physicality from identity How we can consciously work to create a legacy for our kids Why oppression is oppression, be it gender, race, sex or age The opportunities we have to support our burgeoning disruptors / activists Why we should bravely ask ourselves “am I capable?” How we can “transition” to best ally with the transgender community Visit: www.jodiepatterson.com to learn more about Jodie, her story and The Bold World, now available at any bookseller.
