Dear Arroe, Hi. Husbands, partners, and jobs come and go, but close friendships are our bedrock. Until they're not. What happens when these bonds sabotage instead of support? Who among us has the courage to walk away? And how can we protect ourselves from further heartbreak? In her provocative new book, “Estranged: How Strained Female Friendships are Mended or Ended,” (Meridian Editions) well-known gender expert and bestseller Susan Shapiro Barash takes a deep dive into the complexities of female friendships. By peeling back the societal narrative that our friendships are meant to last forever, she uncovers a more nuanced reality: the closest bonds do falter. Through groundbreaking research and 150 interviews with women aged 20 to 80, Barash reveals an emerging trend — estrangement among female friends. Examples of unhealthy friendships: 1. The Faithless Friend: Always there until a third party drives a wedge between you. 2. The Wayward Friend: Drawn to questionable or dangerous behavior. 3. The Green-Eyed Friend: Jealous and secretly rooting for your failure. 4. The Thieving Friend: Betrays you by stealing your ideas, opportunities, relationships. 5. The Disparaging Friend: Tears you down with relentless criticism disguised as “honesty.” She uncovered how these suboptimal friendships can impact mental health, why women avoid conflict even in damaging relationships, the emotional trauma of cutting ties with a friend and estrangement as a radical yet necessary act of self-preservation. Barash sheds light on estrangement—both for the “estranger” who walks away and the “estrangee” who is left behind. She challenges women to reimagine their friendships and take the bold step of letting go when necessary. This cutting-edge book offers an empowering path forward: learning to prioritize self-worth, stability and authenticity over loyalty to friendships that no longer serve us. Barash has written several nonfiction books, including Tripping the Prom Queen, and A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us. She taught gender studies at Marymount Manhattan and has guest taught creative nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence's Writing Institute. She was featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, Marie Claire, and has appeared on TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC and as a guest on NPR and Sirius. In this enlightening episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, we welcome Susan Shapiro Barash, trailblazer in gender studies and author of Estranged: How Strained Female Friendships Are Mended or Ended. Together, we unpack the often-taboo subject of female friendship breakdowns—why they happen, the emotional toll they take, and why letting go can be an act of self-love. Drawing insights from 150 interviews with women aged 20 to 80, Susan shares stories of betrayal, jealousy, and shifting values that lead to friendship estrangement. This episode invites listeners to reflect on their own relationships and offers permission to prioritize well-being over outdated notions of loyalty. About the Guest:Susan Shapiro Barash is a celebrated author and gender studies expert with over 14 non-fiction books, including Toxic Friends and Tripping the Prom Queen. Her latest book, Estranged, explores the hidden complexities of female friendships, revealing why some relationships fade and how women can navigate these shifts with grace and empowerment. Key Takeaways: Friendships aren't always forever—and that's okay. Betrayal, jealousy, and diverging values often fracture bonds. Letting go of toxic friendships is an act of courage, not failure. Women often avoid conflict in friendships due to cultural conditioning as "pleasers." Emotional healing from friendship loss requires self-reflection and self-compassion. Theo nghiên cứu từ giáo sư Susan Shapiro Barash, 90% sự cạnh tranh của phụ nữ tại nơi làm việc là giữa các phụ nữ với nhau. When Friendships Break Up (or Should): Marriages fall apart all the time, and we understand that. But when a friend betrays, undermines or ghosts us, that's another story. Friendships can be soul connections or toxic encounters. Join author Susan Shapiro Barash, whose study on friendship turned into the eye-opening book, Toxic Friends.
Picture a married heterosexual woman who is having an affair. Why do you think she's engaging in infidelity? It is purely about sex and pleasure? Is it about intimacy and emotional connection? Is she doing it just because she can? Women's affairs can take a lot of different forms, so let's talk about them. In today's show, we're going to explore four distinct types of affairs that women have, as well as how women feel about their affairs. Are they happy that they did it, or do they have regrets? I am joined once again by author Susan Shapiro Barash. She has written thirteen nonfiction books on women's issues. She also writes fiction under her pen name Susannah Marren. Susan's latest book is titled A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us. In this book, Susan presents three decades of research she conducted on heterosexual women in monogamous relationships who committed infidelity. Some of the topics we discuss include: What motivates women to have affairs? What is the difference between an empowering affair, a sex-driven affair, a love affair, and a self-esteem affair? Are some types of affairs more prevalent than others? How did the pandemic impact women's infidelity? How do women feel about the affairs they're had? Rates of infidelity have risen over the last half-century; however, if you break the data down by gender, it turns out that men's rate of infidelity has remained relatively stable, whereas women's has increased. So what's behind the rise in female infidelity? And what are the implications of this for modern-day marriages and relationships? Let's talk about it! I am joined today by author Susan Shapiro Barash. Some of the specific topics we discuss include: Are women today actually cheating more, or are they just more willing to admit to it than they were in the past? What role does technology play in women's infidelity? How is age related to having an affair among women? In what ways do women say that affairs made their relationships or marriages better? At what point do affairs become a catalyst to leave a relationship? Be sure to check out Susan's website to learn more. Thank you to our sponsors! The rates of Infidelity are rising in women. I chose to have Susan Shapiro Barash on to discuss this topic because she has studied women and infidelity for over 30 years. I do not condone infidelity and deception in a relationship. I don't believe it is a recipe for a healthy relationship. The purpose of this episode is to understand yourself better if you find yourself in this space and to help to prevent you from getting there to begin with. Susan has written a timely new book called, "A Passion for More" which is the culmination of her over three decades of research about today's women and infidelity. In the final episode of “She Wants More” we look at the darker side of an affair. While many of the women we talked with found empowerment and fulfillment through infidelity, today's guest, “Sarah” has a different kind of story. "Sarah" fell in love with her kid's pediatrician when she was married to another man. She had an affair, left her husband and got married. But then, her story took an unexpected twist, leaving her devastated and vindictive. Her story serves as a reminder of the real stakes of choosing infidelity and the lies we often tell ourselves in the moment in order to justify our actions. Susan Shapiro Barash shares her final thoughts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a Living to 100 Club conversation about the "the passion for more" -- the increasing incidence of affairs of older women. Our guest, Susan Shapiro Barash, has spent 30+ years researching the types of affairs that women have, and is finding an exponential rise in female infidelity. We discuss some of the reasons why these affairs are on the rise. These reasons include greater longevity, increased autonomy, and feelings of entitlement and empowerment (once the sole territory of men). Also discussed are the latest statistics on female infidelity. What percentage of women will engage in an affair, how many say their lover is the opposite of their husband, how many leave their marriages vs. how many end up with their lover. And, importantly, what has our guest learned about the different types of affairs among women? Mini Bio Susan Shapiro Barash is an American author of thirteen nonfiction women's issues books. Pod Crashing Episode 195 With Jo Piazza From She Want's More Are more women having affairs? Or are they finally just talking about it? Throughout history, women have been stigmatized, ostracized, and so much worse for committing adultery-while men have too often been given a pass. But the truth is that women have the same wants, needs and desires as men despite cultural assumptions. Hosted by journalist Jo Piazza, this groundbreaking podcast series features real women of different ages and backgrounds telling the stories of their affairs, many for the first time. After five years of reporting on marriage in the wildly popular Committed podcast, Jo is now uncovering the other side of monogamy and finding some surprising answers about the motivations behind female infidelity - from sex, to empowerment, to self-esteem, and even love. Mark Whitaker and I will discuss the dramatic events in this seminal year, from Stokely Carmichael's middle-of-the-night ouster of moderate icon John Lewis as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, known as SNCC to Carmichael's impassioned cry of “Black Power!” during a protest march in rural Mississippi; the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale to the origins of Kwanzaa, the Black Arts Movement, and the first Black studies programs; and from Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.'s ill-fated campaign to take the civil rights movement north to Chicago to the wrenching ousting of the white members of SNCC. Whitaker offers portraits of the major characters in the yearlong drama and provides new details and insights from key players and journalists who covered the story. On the cusp of her seven year wedding anniversary, host Jo Piazza begins her investigation into female infidelity. For so long the trajectory for women has been that we would be good daughters, good wives, good mothers and good caretakers. But contemporary women have more choices and options and frankly they want more. In fact, the rate of infidelity among women has reportedly risen by about 40% since the early 1990s, while the rate of male infidelity has remained pretty much the same. So, what's going on? In this episode Jo meets "Nikki,” a mom of two in her thirties who had a marriage that looked great on paper, but was lacking the desire and passion she craved. When she looked for those two things outside of her marriage, she not only found the hottest sex she had ever had, but it also made her question why men have been allowed to call all the shots in relationships for so long. Jo also speaks with Susan Shapiro Barash, whose book this podcast is based on, and asks her what she's learned from 30 years of research on female infidelity.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Through personal accounts of over seventy women, we get a wide-angle picture of how a lover is chosen with agency.Today women have affairs with a sense of entitlement. Kathryn interviews Author David Tabatsky.Naïve young attorney Ryan Coleman jumps feet first into the hedonist world of wealth and power at the core of class-action law and finds himself in way over his head in a satirical legal thriller filled with scenarios loosely based on real-world interactions with lawyers, judges and plaintiffs. Included in the cast of colorful characters is Eugenia “Gene” Cauley, a female shark in the male-dominated legal world whose life spirals tragically out of control, and Randy Hollis, an insanely successful lawyer turned multi-billionaire, who is pursuing his ultimate American dream: buying a professional football team. Author and attorney Brian Felgoise alongside Co-Author David Tabatsky reveal the surprising ways in which our system of class-action law enables (mostly) men to get ridiculously wealthy and behave like sophomoric frat boys.
