PRAISING KANE returns with the notorious Elaine May-directed, Dustin Hoffman & Warren Beatty-starring bomb ISHTAR from 1986! Featuring those two as hapless songwriters who end up wrapped up in international intrigue in the middle east, it had a famously messy production but is it as bad as its reputation? Or as good as its revised reputation? Also, did you know Carol Kane is in it? SHE IS! But first we have to chat about the 1986 Cinemax comedy sketch special from Bob Goldthwait called DON'T WATCH THIS SHOW, with Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Kazurinsky, Dee Snider, (an uncredited) Robin Williams and - of course - CAROL KANE! It's AWFUL! All this and the latest CK news so LISTEN! The post Episode 264 – Praising Kane – Ishtar (1986) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
The Other Sister directed by our good friend Garry Marshall and starring Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi as two mentally challenged adults who find love is a movie that shouldn't have been made. We shouldn't have watched it. In fact, this movie killed the podcast for a little bit as it sent George down an existential rabbit hole where he questioned all reality. We recorded this episode a while ago but decided not to release it for a variety of reasons (don't worry, it's not like it's terribly offensive or anything but that should explain why we talk about the lead singer of Smash Mouth dying several months after it happened). What was originally going to be a lost episode is now available for you to listen and judge us for picking a movie like this to watch and then realize that we can't mock it without sounding like dickheads. Just remember, we're good people who made a mistake. There's not even an SNL alum to justify this so we should learn from this and stick to only watching movies starring Dan Aykroyd or Tim Kazurinsky on Saturday Night Jive. It's been said many times on this podcast, George loves him some Mary Gross. For all you doubters out there, he proved why by forcing Ben to watch an episode of Saturday Night Live from Season 9 hosted by Michael Douglas. Coffee infused blood, totally rad 80s music videos, busty 7 year olds, a town without feet, a host with an open headwound, and blackface. This one has it all and we're in agreement that it's pretty solid. You got a demonic Jim Belushi in an ice cream shop, Tim Kazurinsky blowing up cars, Gary Kroeger flying over desks, and a dude that looks kinda like Kenny Loggins. Plus two bops from musical guest Deniece Williams. Join us for a Mary Gross boner that you'll never forget. Why did we watch A Billion For Boris? Because we're dumb? Well, yeah. Because SNL alum Tim Kazurinsky is in it? I guess. Because George thought it was about a monkey who wins the lottery? Perhaps. Or is it just because this is Saturday Night Jive the podcast where we talk about random and obscure movies featuring cast members of Saturday Night Live and sometimes we land on a film nobody has ever heard of, will ever hear of, will ever watch, or will have any interest in whatsoever. Seth Green makes his feature film debut in this movie where he plays a precocious young kid who accidentally creates a TV that can see into the future. What do a group of young kids do with a prescient television? You better believe they bet on the ponies. This is a stupid movie, but this is a stupid podcast, so enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here
We're dumb. We watched Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol. This is the first movie in the Police Academy series we've seen. We thought it would be funny to watch the 4th one, because it features SNL alums Tim Kazurinsky and David Spade. Turns out, they were really running out of steam by the time they got to this one. How dumb was America that people kept going to the theater year after year to see another Police Academy movie? Steve Guttenberg's final entry in the series has the group of prankster policemen training some skateboard punks to be street vigilantes. Then they fight ninjas for some reason. This movie is dumb so we spend a lot of time talking about The Batman and movies we used to spank it to instead. From SNL, Curb, Second City and Police Academy Tim Kazurinsky talks about being discovered by John Belushi and his years on SNL with Eddie Murphy and Julia Louise Dreyfus. Great storyteller and amazing guest. Follow Tim Kazurinsky on Twitter @timkazurinsky
We know the names, Dan Ackroyd, Jim and James Belushi, Gilda Radner, Chris Farley, Bill and Brian Doyle Murray, Mary Gross, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Vanessa Beyer, Cecily Strong, Aidi Bryant, Jason Sudekus, Mike Meyers, Tim Kazurinsky and many more. Out of all those, one looms large for not only staying on the NBC comedy bull for 8 seconds, but riding it for 10 years...longer than any other alum from the Second City. If you haven't figured it out, I'm talking about Tim Meadows, our guest today. A cast member for the entire 90's, Tim spanned era's in the show history including two of what many would consider to be “golden eras” for the show. He's one of a select number of SNL alums to have a character turned into a movie with the “The Ladies Man”, a satire on sexuality that I would say is as relevant today as when it came out. Maybe not the radio part. It would be a podcast today.
*Read in Stefon's Voice*: These results had everything: predictable outcomes, major upsets, some guy Tim Kazurinsky, and Sunday Night Fever (that's the thing where two tired podcast hosts record a podcast Sunday night for an early Monday morning release). In this episode, we go over the results of your voting for the Best SNL Cast Bracket! We tell you who won, who lost, and what shocked us most about the voting. Tangents include but are not limited to: all of Nia's cousins, Eurovision 2021, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. SNL alumni, actor and screenwriter, Tim Kazurinsky on his journey from a coal mine town in Pennsylvania to a world away in Australia and somehow onto the stages of Second City and 30 Rock. His life after SNL and his friendship with John Belushi.
Here we go again! Police Academy 4 (released April 3rd, 1987) is the same as Police Academy 3, which, in itself, was basically the same as Police Academy 1. This time they're training civilians, pulling pranks, and blurring the line between running jokes and lazy writing. Dreams do come true because we are here with Denny Dillon. You Might Know Her From Saturday Night Live, Saturday Night Fever, My One & Only, Gypsy, Garbo Talks, Dream On, and Roseanne: An Unauthorized Biography. After courting her for nearly two years, we chatted with Denny about making her Broadway debut in the historic revival of Gypsy starring Angela Lansbury and directed by Arthur Laurents, her infamous and misunderstood season of SNL, and publicly coming out as a lesbian in 2020. You know how we've said "This is the worst movie we've ever seen" about a lot of movies? You know how we've also said "This is the worst movie ever and if we ever say it again, we are lying"? Well, this is the worst movie we've ever seen and if we say that about another movie we are lying. We watched Plump Fiction a parody of Quentin Tarantino movies and other films from 1994. It stars Julie Brown, not the Downtown one, as a fat version of Mia Wallace, Paul Dinello as the John Travolta character, Tommy Davidson as Samuel L. Jackson (who is sometimes doing a Sammy Davis, Jr. impression for no reason), the coach from Air Bud 2, the voice of Bobby Hill, and Glenn Gulia. More importantly it also features SNL alum Tim Kazurinsky as Priscilla, Queen Of The Dessert. Get it? Because dessert sounds like desert. It's funny. No, it's not. It's painfully unfunny. Please don't watch this film, but you can enjoy listening to us talk about it.Download Here
