My friend and mentor Bryce Cook (married, father of 6 children/7 grandchildren) joins us to talk about how he and his wife Sara navigated the road of having two gay sons (which started in 2003 when their son Trevor came out as gay). Bryce talks about how his worldview of gay people dramatically changed upon learning his good/talented/spiritual son is gay. Bryce talks about Trevor “wanting companionship” just like he saw with his parents (Trevor married his husband Ben in 2023). Their third son Tanner also came out as gay after he saw how his family responded to Trevor's coming out. Bryce talks about deep spiritual promptings that he and Sara needed to do something with the knowledge they gained and not be silent, which led to the formation of All Arizona in 2012. Bryce talks about how their home became a safe place for queer Latter-day Saints and the resulting spiritual/sacred experiences that followed—and how the annual All Arizona conferences provided support/community to LGBTQ members and education/understanding for their family members and church leaders. Bryce talks about the promptings he received to write about this topic, which became a groundbreaking widely-circulated essay called “What Do We Know of God's Will For His LGBT Children? An Examination of the LDS Church's Position on Homosexuality (see show notes). This essay (which has helped me better understand this issue) is powerful and brings more insight/understanding (and possibilities) for queer Latter-day Saints and those who support them. Thank you, Bryce and Sara (and your wonderful family) for teaching how to better love and support. Your story is a beautiful family love story. I encourage everyone to listen to Bryce's podcast and read his essay—I believe you will have better tools to support LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and their families. COVID-19 has changed everything, including how we work (and to be more precise, are employed). But in order to best understand how things have changed, and hopefully to grapple with how they will be, it helps to have studied how they were. Enter Melanie Simms, professor of work and employment at the University of Glasgow ‘s Adam Smith Business School, and the author – in 2019 – of What Do We Know and What Should We Do About the Future of Work? In this Social Science Bites podcast, Simms explains that while the idea of working from home seemed to be the dominant narrative during the pandemic, it's only one of two “real headlines.” That's in large part because the people who talk publicly about working from home are academics and journalists, both groups that did work from home. In fact, Simms relates, in the United Kingdom about 70 percent of workers spent some or all of their time at their workplace. The less public headline, she notes, is that there seems to be a large group of people who have left the labor market during the pandemic – often women with children. And while improving options for childcare might see more mothers in employed positions, Simms notes a different trajectory for older workers -- almost anyone over 50 who has left the workforce in the last year-and-a-half struggles to re-enter it -- regardless of kind of work they do. In discussion with interviewer David Edmonds, Simms details that while she does look at global trends, her research mostly focuses on the United Kingdom, and thanks to the regulatory ecosystem and a skew toward the service economy, what's true in the UK can't automatically be applied elsewhere. Among the subjects Simms and Edmonds touch on are the “regrowth” of the middle class female workforce starting in the 1960s; the difficulties that a lack of childcare routinely creates for working women; the aging of the workforce as young people stay in school longer (delaying their entry into the labor marker) while at the same time older workers remain active in the labor market for longer; de-industrialization; labor unions; and the gig economy, which Simms sees as more about how work is allocated than a change in work itself.

Episode 12. Today on the podcast, I got to talk to my very dear friend and incredibly talented colleague Dr. Sapna Doshi. Dr. Sapna Doshi is a licensed clinical psychologist and owner of Mind Body Health. Dr. Doshi earned her Ph.D. from Drexel University and completed her internship at Duke University Medical Center. In 2015, she opened her private practice, Mind Body Health which now operates in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC and is staffed with 25 psychologists and dietitians. Mind Body Health specializes in providing evidence-based treatment in the areas of eating disorders, insomnia, obesity, chronic pain, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders.  What We Cover What is the field of clinical health psychology doing well?Where are we missing the mark? How can people balance working on improving their relationship to food and their bodies when they have difficulty letting go of weight loss as a goal? Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating Dr. Doshi talks about the positive effects of the Health at Every Size movement and Intuitive Eating as an alternative approach. We also discuss a controversial topic which is the effect she and I have seen where some members of a social movement can come across as shaming to others. She talked about the environment she has created within her practice where they can have conversations between professionals that are respectful, even if they ultimately disagree. This has created a community where collaboration and focus on the client remains the top priority. Striking the Balance Between External Suggestions and Internal Cues Dr. Doshi talks about the balance and difficulty of this in the real world. She discusses her own personal experience with having a diagnosis of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and how challenging it is to tune inwards while having to avoid certain foods she enjoys. Considerations for the Body Mass Index in South Asian Community Dr. Doshi talks about her experience as a South Asian woman growing up in the United States. We also talk about her dissertation research and the fact that South Asian women on average actually have higher body fat percentage at a lower body mass index (Doshi, 2012). So again we see the limitations of the body mass index in actually predicting health. She also discussed a finding from her dissertation that more cultural conflict (that is, more conflict between the South Asian and standard American culture) was associated with higher levels of disordered eating (Doshi, 2012). Ways to Improve Cultural Adaptations to Improve Care Dr. Doshi shares a story of her experience being told how to treat her SIBO and the lack of cultural adaptation and flexibility in the standard medical approach. She also shares about the fact that South Asians are underrepresented in the mental health field. Therefore, it's important to work towards increasing diversity in different health professions. Why Does Behavioral Weight Loss so Often Fail? We talked about our experiences with behavioral weight loss trials, and ways in which we were part of methods that were ultimately rarely successful long-term. "Deprivation is not a state we can constantly be living in."Dr. Sapna Doshi, PhD She also discusses the fact that prior weight loss attempts can sometimes be romanticized, leaving people to forget the negative and focus on all the positive (e.g., "I think I was happy... I must have been, I was thin!") Is Long-Term Weight Loss Possible? What Do We Know? We talked about the National Weight Control Registry. This is a registry for people who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for at least a year, though on average they have lost more weight and kept it off longer than that (Thomas et al., 2014). What Have We Learned from this Registry? Regularly activeModifying their eating in some wayMost eat breakfast regularlyThey aren't watching a ton of television

This episode talks about how large oil companies dominate areas inhabited by low-income or indigneous people in both Nigeria and the Peruvian Amazon and how their negligence in maintaining pipelines has caused thousands of oil spills which are dangerous for both the ecosystems and the people. Consumers in the U.S. continue to buy oil from these companies without realizing how they exploit and harm these communities. What Do We Know? Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome David Putrino is the Director of Rehabilitation Innovations and Jenna Tosto Mancuso is a physical therapist both at the Abilities Research Center at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Josh Duntz is the CEO and founder of a breathwork company called Stasis. Dayna McCarthy is a physician in the department of rehabilitation at Mount Sinai Hospital. David discusses the management of COVID in three phases: 1. Prehab – get patients to feel control over their symptoms (i.e. breathwork) 2. Medical – investigating red flags which may prevent a patient advancing with treatment 3. Physical Therapy – a reconditioning program Josh uses breathwork to teach functional breathing and having control over one's breath. He uses this treatment to help COVID patients become comfortable to perform physical activity. Josh uses the three pillars to explain breathwork: 1. Mechanics of breathing 2. Tidal volume – measuring normal breathing 3. Respiration rate Dayna explains her role in phase 2 of management – checking if there is anything significant that needs to be ruled out or taken care of from a medical standpoint. Jenna emphasizes that when patients reach phase 3, these patients are highly sensitive with quick symptom exacerbation. PT's need to go against their instincts for pushing patients and educate patients to not push themselves. Check out Jenna's previous episode with us presenting her COVID-19 Long-Hauler Inservice. What Do We Know for Sure about the COVID-19 Virus at This Point? (0:32)Guest: Sankar Swaminathan, MD, Chief of Infectious Diseases Division, University of Utah HealthAll of the decisions governments, schools and businesses are making right now about how to proceed with COVID-19 cases on the rise, depend on having good information about how the virus spreads. And that information has been in flux. Does the novel coronavirus spread through droplets only? Can you get infected by touching a surface that has the virus on it? Why do some people get really sick and some don't even have symptoms? How accurate are the tests for COVID-19? Microaggressions and the Harm They Inflict (20:50)Guest: Ronald E. Hall, Professor of Social Work, Michigan State UniversityYou're not a racist. Of course you're not. And you'd never do something like call an African American the “n-word.” But there are many little ways to be racist-or sexist. They're are called “microaggressions” and you may not even realize you're doing them. You probably mean no harm. But they can be harmful. The Widening Racial Gap of Home Ownership (36:33)Guest: Jacob Rugh, Professor of Sociology, Brigham Young UniversityEighteen years after the housing crisis hit the US, homeownership rates have rebounded for every racial group except Black Americans. Right now, while only 41% of Black Americans own homes compared to 75 percent of Whites. Latino homeownership has climbed to just under 50%. Why does this disparity exist? What are its implications for the 2020 election? Migration is Natural & Inevitable; Trying to Prevent It Only a Distraction From Real Solutions (52:52)Guest: Sonia Shah, Science Journalist, Author of “The Next Great Migration: The Beauty and Terror of Life on the Move”In the natural world, migration is an ingenious survival adaptation. Birds and butterflies do it–of course. Did you know even forests can migrate? So why does society consider it a problem when people do it? More than 200 Offensive Words are Getting Banned From Competitive Scrabble (1:32:08)Guest: Josephine Flowers, Competitive Scrabble Player, Tournament and Club DirectorThe North American Scrabble Players Association–which hosts competitive Scrabble events for people who take the word game very, very seriously–has announced it will ban the use of hundreds of offensive words, including racial slurs. If you’re a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and navigating a journey to understand the intersection of religion and sexual orientation, we invite you to join us for this Latter Gay Stories episode. Bryce Cook is an active Latter-day Saint, father of two gay sons and the author of “What Do We Know of God’s Will For His LGBT Children? An Examination of the LDS Church’s Position on Homosexuality.” In this episode, Bryce Cook and Kyle Ashworth fairly and candidly breakdown the history of LGBT discussion within the Church, changes within the policies and doctrines, social impacts and what the future might look like for the LDS and LGBT communities. We invite all Latter-day Saints to listen to this interview, regardless of how you personally feel regarding these topics. We invite you to follow the counsel of Elder M. “I cannot count the number of people who’ve told me on Twitter, ‘Of course immigrants increase British unemployment! Of course immigrants drive down wages. It’s just the law of supply and demand.’ And it’s an almost infallible rule that people who say that do not understand basic economics and do not understand supply and demand, because immigration adds to both supply and demand.” So recounts Jonathan Portes, a professor of economics and public policy at the School of Politics & Economics of King's College, London and the former chief economist at the Cabinet Office, in this Social Science Bites podcast. Portes is explaining to interviewer David Edmonds how the “lump of labor fallacy” -- that there’s only a certain number of jobs to go around when in fact the number of jobs in an economy is not fixed – often plays out in the popular debate on immigration. “The key here,” Portes adds, “is that immigration leads to demand as well as supply.” The economist has a long and storied career in British economics, having been chief economist at the Department for Work and Pensions before his stint in Cabinet and then director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research from February 2011 until October 2015. His latest achievement is the release of What Do We Know, and What Should We Do About Immigration, one of three books in the debut release of SAGE Publishing’s new ‘What Do We Know’ series of social science explainers. (SAGE is the parent of Social Science Space.) One of the things that he definitely knows is that for anyone who sees immigration as an unalloyed evil (or boon, for that matter) is certainly mistaken. He likens immigration to trade, which is generally reckoned to be a good thing. “Trade and immigration are in some way very closely analogous and that the results that you get about the overall benefits – with the possible issue of distributional consequences – are very similar.” Those ‘distributional consequences,’ of course, often get the outsize headlines. “The UK has always been a country of immigration in some ways, going right back to the Norman conquests, if you like” Portes observes. Pre-European Union, surges in immigration often came from  refugees like the Huguenots or from commonwealth countries. “Step change,” he adds, did not accompany immediate entry in the EU, but did in the 1990s. “It coincided with Tony Blair’s government and some of the policy changes that Blair introduced, but it wasn’t driven by that, but by globalization.” The number of arrivals tripled from about 50,000 a year net migration to 150,000 a year. Another jump came in 2004, when workers in the new Eastern European member states in the EU – Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia – flocked to an open UK labor market. He offers quick correlation to test the direst worries about the continuing influx. He looks at two decades of heavy immigration into the UK, in particular in the last five years, and then at the unemployment figure, at 4 percent the lowest since the current way of measuring joblessness were instituted. “It doesn’t prove anything, because of course there are lots of other things going on. But it does sort of tell you that if immigration really had a big negative effect on the employment of natives, that’s not really consistent with the aggregate data.” Portes admits that there’s more to immigration that employment and wages; those just where the good data reside. “It’s much harder when you’re looking at more complicated issues – business startups, productivity, innovation. There is some evidence that immigration has had positive impacts ... but its more suggestive and more qualitative.” So ever the academic, he does caveat. But being the former bureaucrat, he also interpolates. Portes offers Edmonds the example of British higher education. “Instinct tells me that [immigration has] been good. Would we have the world-leading universities that we have in London if we had to solely rely on Brits to fill the jobs? I think it’s almost inconceivable that we would.”

Human beings, as a species, are putting on weight. Obesity rates are rising in rich and poor countries alike for a variety of reasons, from changing dietary habits and activity levels to exposure to artificial nighttime light. Mounting evidence from over the past decade suggests that certain chemicals may be playing a role as well. For some people, so-called obesogens may be altering their metabolism and fat cell development, making it harder to maintain a healthy weight. In this podcast, host Ashley Ahearn talks with Bruce Blumberg about the state of our understanding of obesogens. Visit the podcast webpage to download the full transcript of this podcast.
