The Business of You with Rachel Gogos

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 18, 2023 38:36

Amy Carter is the owner of one of Indiana's top salons, but she isn't a beauty service provider. She is not licensed to do hair, nails or esthetics - but she has found success by approaching salon ownership from an accountant's point of view. Amy Carter is the Founder of Empowering You Consulting - helping salons and spas across the nation every day to expand their client base, increase profits, operate more efficiently, train a team of leaders, and gain personal satisfaction from their professional endeavors. Amy owns and operates Solaris Aveda Salon in Evansville Indiana, ranked in the top 200 fastest-growing salons by Salon Today. Solaris has been named as an Honoree in Salon Today 200 for the years 2018-2022.  Amy knows what it takes to reinvent a business and train a leadership team that is invested in long-term success. This is the story of how Amy started her unlikely career - not as an accountant, but as an entrepreneur in the face of great difficulties. She has overcome obstacles like bad business partners, bankruptcy, a lack of systems and the merging of mindsets to create her business. These lessons are being featured on The Business of You to inspire us to rise above the impossible - and allow ourselves to grow. A rough start in business Amy's story is a welcome reminder that great success sometimes begins with failure.  After college, Amy longed to start a small business. With her degree in accounting, she bought a salon - realizing after the ink was dry that the business was bankrupt. She was panicked. Her business partner cleaned out the bank accounts, left the employees unpaid and skipped town overnight, leaving 22-year-old Amy to clean up the mess. She made the difficult decision to build a new building and reopen the business after receiving 24-hour notice to vacate the mall. 18 years later, the business is still open.  Amy could have let that mistake dictate the rest of her life. But rather than being hard on herself, she humbled herself instead - committing to a lifelong journey learning to be better at business.  Now, Amy understands what she missed the first time. As an accountant, she looked back through the books and the issues were clear. Realizing that they had been paying too much rent and the profit was so low, Amy vowed to approach her salon business like an accountant from now on. Structure in an unstructured business When Amy asked one of her employees to clock in and clock out, it felt as though she was asking for her first born child. Met with resistance while implementing systems and processes, Amy realized that she needed to learn to speak her employees' language. To Amy, structure and systems were like breathing. They felt normal and natural. But to her creative and relaxed staff, her rules felt like a prison. Amy had to change their tune. After explaining that the systems were in place to protect their legal rights, Amy felt exasperated.  Finally, she had an aha moment. She motivated her employees to follow processes in order to free up their time, take on more clients, get paid more and receive payment on time with no issues. Her communication worked - and many of her previous employees still work with her to this day.  Your business grows with you When asked about her personal and professional growth, Amy laughs. She admits that she wasn't the leader she is today, early in her business.  Since Amy started her business at just 22 years old, she didn't have the life experience to approach her employees with empathy and understanding. But now, she sings a different tune. She is nationally recognized as a leader of salon and spa owners, teaching them to think less like frazzled service providers and more like smart savvy entrepreneurs.  Your personal growth will be reflected in your business. Enjoy this funny, frank and inspiring conversation on The Business of You! Quotes “I was like - if I'm going to do this type of business again, I've got to do it differently. And that's when I hired a consulting company.” “I had a personal mission that I wanted to have a debt-free company. Because to me, in a small business, when we have debt, it really does tie us in as owners. There's not a lot of freedom. So for me, freedom and flexibility look like being completely debt-free.” “It became about running it like a business, not as a job. A lot of times in the beauty industry, really, any service-based business, typically the owners are heavy technicians. Being a non-technician, I wasn't constantly doing services. But you know what the tricky part of it was? How do you take beauty and business plus employees, and merge them together? It was really challenging, putting this structure in place so that they can thrive - because they were so resistant to it.” “I realized that there were owners just like me that thought that their dream was the most amazing vision dream ever…turned straight up nightmare. Like, the math just doesn't work in this industry.” “I finally figured out some secret ingredients to get my employees to really be on board with it. Ultimately, those systems are for them. When I was able to figure out some of the secret sauces, so to speak, about this industry, I was like, I know those people are just like me. If I can support them in creating a life that they love and a business that they love and maybe a paycheck that they deserve, then we're onto something!” “It takes so much resilience to be able to not only have a brick and mortar, but then to learn how to have a remote company, have a remote team.” “I'm only really good at this because I really sucked at it. I'll be honest. I didn't get here because it was easy. I didn't take the easy path. I actually was an asshole. I couldn't understand why people just wouldn't just do their job. My businesses grew up with me. I took on a lot of personal development in my twenties, and then in my thirties, I really took on leadership development because that had to happen.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Amy's website at http://www.empoweringyouconsulting.com  Follow Amy on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/amy.laura.carter  Connect directly with Amy on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/amycartereyc/

Amy Carter joins Purposely Podcast to share her founder story launching The Christchurch Foundation. Amy understands what it's like to lead in a time of crisis. Amy shares the issues she dealt with and the emotions she experienced along the way. However, moments of doubt, sleepless nights did not knock her enthusiasm, she maintained her focus and sense of purpose to see her through the tough times. In 2011, Amy was a business owner when disaster struck. The Christchurch earthquake killed 185 people and permanently changed the physical and social landscape of the city she lived in. It affected her view on philanthropy and shaped her focus on what the city needed. This eventually led her to set up the Christchurch Foundation in 2017. The foundation went on to play an instrumental role in raising $13 million to respond to the 2019 terrorist attack on two Mosques that killed 51 people. The worst terrorist atrocity ever in New Zealand and with hundreds of lives changed forever The Christchurch Foundation was under immense pressure to get it right. To facilitate the right kind of response that was ‘led by the victim's needs' and helping people both in the immediate aftermath and to this day and beyond. Amy has also been at the centre of a media storm that criticised her salary and took issue with elements of the charity and how it has operated. Criticism that Amy points as unfair and based on a lack of understanding of the community foundation model and the role they play in facilitating and encouraging place-based giving. One of the most respected philanthropy leaders in New Zealand, Amy is bold in her approach, and is not afraid to disrupt the status quo and tread her own path. Her new focus is to tap into the generosity of Cantabrians (a term used to describe people from the Canterbury region of NZ) living abroad with the launch of a UK based entity. This move was about building on their core focus to make it easier for people to give to the causes within Christchurch that they care about whether they live locally or not. They are a donor-led organisation rather than cause-led. That means that they act on behalf of the generous person or business who wants to give, matching them to causes that share their ethics, values, and desired outcomes. They are one of 17 community foundations in New Zealand with a total endowment of over $200 million focused on doing good both today and in the future. Amy's career has seen her working or volunteering for some of New Zealand's iconic charitable organisations including Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Swimming New Zealand, Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust, and St John. She has always been heavily involved in the Canterbury community and has sat on boards at University of Canterbury Students Association, The Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce and Sumner Lifeboat. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Suddenly, finding parking, getting food, asking questions, and preparing for the next visit can become overwhelming and daunting. But there are extraordinary professionals out there whose entire career revolves around guiding, comforting, and empowering parents and children during their hospital visits and stays. My guest today, Amy Carter, is one of those amazing people. Amy Carter Owner of Empowering You Coaching talks about Salon Drama & More One of things that is really interesting about Amy Carter is her understated but huge breadth of experience in the salon world. She runs a salon consulting company called Empower you and speaks with owners of different types of salons. She has helped with every conceivable salon crisis.  On top of that she has had multiple salons and currently owns Solaris Aveda in Evansville, Indiana. Amy makes some strong points and expounds on her philosophy:Salons are filled with drama.Drama has a direct impact on the bottom line. Some top performers can sometimes be the most dramatic. It is ok to be Interested vs interesting with the client.Spa techs can be dramatic as well.If I have to think of you more than twice, you are gone.Different clients may want various environments: calm, edgy, etc. Some salon owners are running two pennies together to make ends meet. The laws of supply and demand don’t necessarily apply to this industry.Owners need to get out from behind the chair sometimes.   Amy runs Empowering You as a unique consulting company. It is one that has salon owners talking to owners. She says she can get any salon, even one overlooking a corn or bean field, to a million dollars. She does it using coaching. A federally certified Life Coach, Amy and her team often find that the salon stinks from the head down. The owner and leads are sometimes the drama. It is often the case that owners need to get over their issues and then they show up to the store differently. Amy’s coaches are the “real deal”, which gives them a big point of difference. She asks clients what they want to achieve and then holds them to it. Accountability is big for them, as it is for everyone. She says that sometimes teams hold owners back. Very often people cant see the new you, they are often comfortable with the old you, you have taught them that. In a way we are all familiar with coaching as we had or saw how coaches operated in high School and other avenues of life. Coaches can be incredibly influential on individuals. It is such a rare thing to have a coach in the first place. But imagine if you allowed someone to coach you, someone who took it seriously and they were really invested in your success. How powerful could that be? Tony Gordongordonsalon.com gordonstylistacademy.com empoweringyouconsulting.com

This week on We Dig Plants, hosts Alice Marcus Krieg and Carmen Devito are joined by Marta McDowell, a teacher of landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden, and consultant for private clients and public gardens. Her garden writing has appeared in popular publications such as Woman’s Day, Fine Gardening and The New York Times. Marta's book All the Presidents' Gardens tells the untold history of the White House grounds. Starting with the seed-collecting, plant-obsessed George Washington and ending with Michelle Obama's focus on edibles, this rich and compelling narrative reveals how the story of the garden is also the story of America. Readers learn about Lincoln's goats, Ike's putting green, the Kennedys' iconic roses, Amy Carter's tree house, and much more. They also learn the plants whose favor has come and gone over the years and the gardeners who have been responsible for it all.

This week: The kick off of a series of programs recorded at Baer Ridgway Exhibitions in San Francisco during BAS's mini residency as a guest of Chris Duncan during his "Eye Against I" exhibition. Brian and Duncan talk with Chris about the series, and then the main event Tammy Rae Carland! In addition to being a fascinating guest, Tammy is the only guest we've had who has a song written about them to utilize as their intro/outro clip (by the awesome band Bikini Kill no less). Bio lifted from Tammy's site: Tammy Rae Carland was born in Portland Maine in 1965. She received her MFA from UC Irvine, her BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. She is an Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts where she also Chairs the Photography Program. She is represented by Silverman Gallery in San Francisco and primarily works with photography, experimental video and small run publications. Her work has been screened and exhibited in galleries and museums internationally including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin and Sydney. Her photographs have been published in numerous books including The Passionate Camera; Queer Bodies of Desire and Lesbian Art in America. Her fanzine writing has been republished in A Girl’s Guide to Taking Over the World. She has also published photographs and received reviews of her work in numerous national media including: The New York Times, Big, The Los Angeles Times, Spin, Details, Out and The Village Voice. In the 1990’s Carland independently produced a series of influential fanzines, including I (heart) Amy Carter. She has collaborated on the record art of some seminal underground music releases for the bands Bikini Kill, The Fakes and The Butchies. From 1997-2005 she co-ran Mr. Lady Records and Videos, an independent record label and video art distribution company that was dedicated to the production and distribution of queer and feminist culture. Tammy Rae Carland lives in Oakland California.   PS: A hearty "Fuck You" to Libsyn and their crappy software. This is the third time I've written this. Turn off or down the "time out" function on your site, jerks.
