Rewind. Sandy and Terry discuss *Poltergeist*, one of America's most beloved horror films, which may indeed be the most cursed film in Hollywood history.Released by MGM on June 4, 1982, and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor, *Poltergeist* is rumored to be cursed because real human skeletons were used in a pivotal scene. This curse is believed to have led to the tragic deaths of three individuals in brutal and devastating circumstances. We'll also talk to writer and actor Michael McManus, who played Ben Tuthill, the neighbor next door, to get the real story of what happened.

Recently, the DEA, along with Law Enforcement Agencies in Riverside City and County, announced a major fentanyl bust worth more than $16 million. "Operation Hotline Bling" dealt a major blow to the Sinaloa Cartels culminating in at least 15 arrests and a monumental seizure of illicit drugs. According to the DEA, for the first time in history, fatal overdoses reached 112,000 deaths. Young people and people of color being among the hardest hit. According to an article published by Michael McManus for FAIR, fentanyl is rapidly replacing heroin as the drug cartels are using to make money. Fentanyl is attractive to the cartels because of the massive profit margin, with just $50,000 in production costs, generating more than $ 20 million in income. This week's episode looks at the impact of fentanyl, meth and other illicit drugs on our communities, our kids and the homeless population. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/million-kids/support

When it comes to Scent Work, we work to to ensure our dog has solid odor recognition, that they find their hides valuable and are able to competently solve odor puzzles and source their hides both efficiently and effectively. However, to truly be successful, our dogs must also master a myriad of other skills which have nothing at all to do with searching. In this episode, we delve into this topic, providing a few examples of the types of skills oftentimes brushed aside as unimportant when in truth they may be pivotal for the dog's or team's overall success. Teagasc researcher Peter Doyle joins Catherine Egan on this week's Beef Edge podcast to give an update on the Derrypatrick herd in Grange. Peter discusses how calving went this spring and how breeding season went on the farm. The pre-breeding scan was well worthwhile this year, Peter explained, and helped resolve any issues before they arose. Perter discussed the traits that sires were selected on and which sires were used. Being the wettest July on record Peter also discusses the impact this has had on performance and getting second cut of silage harvested. With a lot of clover sown this year Peter explains how he went about over-sowing it. He also outlined all the areas of focus for the coming month in advance of weaning and the herd health protocol. We also wish Michael McManus well in his new post and wish Niamh Doyle all the best in Derrypatrick. Healthcare organizations generate massive amounts of data, so much so that the challenge becomes how and where to move it and store it.Health and Life Science at the Edge host, Gabrielle Bejarano, spoke with Zettar's Chin Fang and Intel's Michael McManus for a peek inside the technology solutions Zettar and Intel are partnering on to advance the challenge of data movement, processing, and storage for healthcare organizations.Genomics files are a perfect example of the type of sizable data files that life science companies are creating. "When you go to genomics, for example, genomics files, a whole genome for a single person is about 350 gigabytes," McManus says. "So, if you're sequencing many people, you multiply however many people, you're sequencing times 350 gigabytes for your storage planning purpose." And he says cryoelectronic microscopy data sets are multiple terabytes in sizes. The data is broken into single gigabyte movies, and the average microscope can create thousands of those an hour. And then, the data requires analysis.Chin adds there are some institutions Zettar works with whose processes generate files as big as four terabytes with rates of one terabyte per second that requires aggressive data reduction to reduce that to the gross rate of 800 Gbps, or 100 gigabytes per second. These huge datasets cause a myriad of problems for technicians, scientists, and IT staff, including wasted time, frustration, and a loss of productivity.Standard data-moving practices can't handle these complex situations, so Zettar's approach utilizes an efficient unified data-mover model. "With Intel's help, we developed this real-time capability, so now we make the real-time data movement readily available to anyone who needs it, and then this will have great benefits to accelerate the healthcare and life sciences research efforts going forward," Chin says.Learn more about Health and Life Science data movement solutions by connecting with Chin Fang and Michael McManus on LinkedIn or visit Intel Health and Life Sciences.Subscribe to this channel on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts to hear more from the Intel Health and Life Sciences at the Edge.

With breeding season around the corner Derrypatrick farm manager Michael McManus gives an insight on this week's Beef Edge podcast into how calving went, the breeding season ahead and what sires are being selected. Michael describes how calving took place from 2nd February- 22nd April. There were 102 cows calved, 100 live calves, 1 set of twins and 3 moralities. The average birthweight was 45.5 kg and the average birth date was 2nd March. 89 cows and heifers calved in 6 weeks. The first 30 cows and calves went to grass on the 2nd March similar to last year. They were turned out in small groups of 7-8 cows as they were easily managed and avoided damaging ground They were mostly first time calves and it reduced the risk of scour outbreaks in the sheds. By mid- March the rest of the cows and calves turned out after being vaccinated and dehorned. Breeding season will start on the 3rd May. Cows will be body condition scored, weighed, scanned and tail painted this week. A new trial is starting with five Aberdeen angus sires and five Charolais sires being selected, 4 and 5 stars on the terminal index, easy calving with good reliability. The sires have also good fleshing ability to see if it determines which animals will be slaughtered at an earlier age. Michael also highlights the grassland plan for the farm in the coming weeks and he outlines the plan to over-sow white clover and to reseed red clover silage. In Scent Work, we oftentimes harp on our desire for our dog to focus on one thing and one thing alone: the target odor they have been trained to find. But do dogs actually do this? Are they truly discounting the immense amount of information the environment at their disposal? Is doing so not only possible, is it preferable?! We discuss this and more with Michael McManus in hopes of painting a more honest picture of how smart dogs hunt (and all of our dogs are smart), why that matters and how we may need to adjust our expectations and how we train in response to these realities. ----more---- Scent Work University is an online dog training platform focused on all things Scent Work.
