On today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I pull your head out of the sand and make you think about the one thing no entrepreneur likes to consider: Money. And to do that, we have Brie Sodano on the show. Brie is a financial adviser and founder of From Sheep to Shark. Her goal is to help a million women manage their money and offer real-life advice that doesn’t come from a handbook. Brie has a great story and great advice. If you’re still struggling with money even if your income is rising, you need to listen to this week’s episode. Learning money management “on the job” Brie and her husband had a kid young, and by 23 she found herself a mom and a homeowner, with a husband who was an EMT. So managing the household budget became a matter of necessity. She then got into work at a nonprofit and realized that while she loved the work, she wasn’t making any money. So she taught herself how to trade stock options as a side hustle. And when it came time for the next thing, she realized that financial planning was the way to go. Her story will resonate with a lot of listeners, and if you listen to this episode, you can hear Brie’s advice for how life is really lived. How to get out of your financial comfort zone As Brie says on this week’s episode of Just the Tips, sometimes more income doesn’t actually change how we handle our money. Whether it’s habits you learned growing up or when you were struggling, it’s sometimes difficult to break out of our mindset around money. For instance, if you’re able to balance your income with your expenses, sometimes if your income goes up, your expenses do, too, because you’re not used to having the “extra” money. Brie works with clients all the time to get them out of those old habits, and walks listeners through one of the exercises she conducts to break you out of that mindset. Why budgets don’t work Brie works with clients for six months to tackle their financial problems, and the first thing she does is help them wrangle their cash flow. The first thing she does is get people out of thinking about “budgets.” It’s very difficult to think about your budget written on a piece of paper at home when you’re at Target buying toilet paper. So Brie came up with something called the “invisible method” to help people manage their cash flow without having to think about it at every step. And the first step is to create five bank accounts. Five. Why? Listen to this week’s Just the Tips to find out. Entrepreneurs: Keep it clean Brie works with a wide variety of clients, but she specifically works with entrepreneurs, too, on straightening out their finances. And as she says on this episode of Just the Tips: You have to keep it clean. You have to keep your personal finances separate from your business finances. That can be a very difficult thing to do, but Brie has been doing this a long time, and has great ideas for how entrepreneurs can achieve financial “cleanliness.” Sound like something you could use help with? Listen to this week’s Just the Tips. Day #21: Team Action Planning When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps. -Confucius This is the step for making things happen. It’s the integration of strategy into performance. The team goes into action with the steps they have created, that they now own, you have approved, and all is transparent. In this step, the accountably mechanism isn’t you. The accountability now rests with the team members themselves. Actually, peer-to-peer accountability is stronger than top down process management. You can have both, but you don’t need to be the daddy or mommy of the group. Let them manage the mutual accountabilities. It’s their performance that matters. If the team doesn’t perform, it becomes quite evident as to where the problem lies and with whom the issues rest. In this model, everything is transparent. Here’s the process: Gather the team - Convene a session for the purpose of creating an action plan to achieve a monthly milestone under a short-term goal for the year. If you haven’t set monthly milestones yet, it’s time to do that. You can do both in a single session. Create a working space - I use storyboard sprayed with repositionable mounting glue and paper from the printer cut in half. The paper will stick to the cardboard you get at the art store or office supply. It’s a 36x48” tri-fold black report board. Print out the Short-Term Goal you are working on and place it on the board. Print out the current milestone for the month. Plan ahead for the upcoming month. Brainstorm a list of to-dos (action steps) to reach the milestone. Combine ideas that are practical for one step and create a new note. Place the items on a board with the header, “Action Item” or “Action Step.” Write the name of a “Responsible Person” for each item. Define an Action Date - start date, draft date, completion date, phase one completion date, etc. Transcribe the notes and send to the group. Tips: You facilitate the process and team members create the content. Appoint a person to transcribe the notes. Do not allow cell phones or computers. Set the next meeting before you adjourn. Using the process empowers the team for action, sets accountabilities, highlights opportunities for coaching, and creates momentum. If the team sets the action items, there should be action dates each week moving toward the milestone. The weekly reporting exposes uncompleted tasks that limit your progress. By the way, keep your name off of any action that someone else can do so you can supervise. Now, get out of the way and let them perform. Next: Day #22 – Flash Meetings

On today’s episode of Just the Tips, we “celebrate” Dean turning 34, and give a shout-out to our one true fan who bought him a Bond license plate for his birthday. And we celebrate having Yara Golden on the show. Yara is a storytelling expert who helps businesses up their communications game, build effective product launches and tell the right stories that will click with the right people. And speaking of clicking, she’s writing the entire indoctrination sequence for ClickFunnels. Yara knows stories inside and out, so today we’re talking with her about what goes into a good story, how entrepreneurs can leverage story, and what “storyselling” really means. And of course she gives Dean plenty of shit. What is Storyselling? Like so many of us, Yara gets offer after offer emailed to her by marketers, and as she says, so much of those offers just say “Buy my shit, buy my shit, buy my shit.” Which is not the most effective pitch. So she came up with this idea of storyselling, which wraps a story from the seller’s life around the product being sold. The audience then gets to know, like and trust the entrepreneur, and then the next obvious step is that the audience reaches out to that entrepreneur to help them with their problem. This is a foolproof method. Even if you’re as unlikable as Dean, if you have a cute puppy, you can just tell stories about the puppy. We cover all the bases here at Just the Tips. You don’t have a list, you have people Yara brings up a really important point on this week’s Just the Tips: You can’t treat your “list” as though it’s made up of numbers and not people. You may be tracking numbers and data, but that’s just an expression of people’s behaviors. People get into internet marketing as though you can throw out all the rules of normal human behavior, like you can just sell and market to people and they’ll opt in without you ever having to genuinely engage with them. But that’s only going to take you so far. As Dean says so many people behave as though they need to beat their list over the head with their message and get as much money out of them as possible, rather than trying to build a long-term relationship. How storytelling translates to selling Everyone is worried about their indoctrination sequence, but as Yara says, if you know the story you want to tell, and you tell it like your audience is comprised of people you want to hear it, then everything falls into place. You can tell that story for your indoctrination sequence, you can tell it in videos, you can tell it in emails, blog posts. Once you get that down, then you have loads of content you can use to connect with your audience. And Yara is full of amazing tips on how that all comes together, but you’ll have to listen to Just the Tips to get them. Familiarity mixed with curiosity Yara makes the great point in this episode of Just the Tips: The salutation that happens at the beginning of every email “Hi [YOUR FIRST NAME] is the fakest way to sound authentic, and it’s the first thing she edits out of any copy she edits. She drops the salutation and gets right into what she wants to talk about, the same way you would do if you were talking with a friend. The second thing she does is instill curiosity. Present a problem or a question to the audience that will make them want to click through. And from there, you have to make each sentence heighten the drama on the last sentence. This is a really great, meat-and-potatoes episode of Just the Tips that you have to hear. Lori Nordstrom is a lifelong entrepreneur. Starting her own business at the age of 16, she has gone through the ups and downs, a changing market landscape, and all seasons of living the entrepreneur lifestyle. Lori now works with Christian women, coaching them on a path to reach their goals of keeping God first, family second and building a business to support their priorities, dreams and the calling that God has for them.  Lori’s 5 Tips:You have to plan to plan. Create time to plan, even if you’re a few years ahead. Don’t be tempted to give the farm away. Know your value and what you’re worth, don’t give things away for free, don’t compare your value of someone else, know what’s the right price for you.Don’t think you need brick and mortar to have a business. It’s ok to work from home. Whether you have a studio or not, that doesn’t make you a “legit” business owner. Have 6 months put aside for all expenses before you move in to make sure you’re covered.Don’t hire people without job descriptions so people know what they need to do.Checklist of legalities – register your business name, make sure your set up to pay taxes correctly. Episode 14: BLT Pasta Salad, Roasted Chicken and Angel Hair Pasta, and Roasted Cauliflower Spaghetti It’s pasta night on the Dinner Sisters with recipes that go beyond just sauce and noodles. We’ll bake angel hair pasta with chicken, make a creamy cauliflower and mascarpone spaghetti and a pasta salad riff on the BLT. Each recipe is anything but a basic pasta dish. BLT Pasta Salad: The Kitchn Bacon, lettuce, and tomato are a killer classic summer sandwich and this pasta salad recipe evokes all the best parts. Tangy dressing is mixed in with crispy bacon, cherry tomatoes and spinach for a salad that is as great for dinner as it is for lunch the next day. Tips: Unless you are a huge garlic fan, consider using one clove of garlic instead of the suggested two. We two cloves to be too much. Pick any short pasta shape you like- we think raddiatore or penne are good choices here. This keeps well in the fridge for a couple days, making it a good recipe for houseguests or for taking for lunch. Roasted Chicken on Angel Hair Pasta: Simply Recipes Both a roasted chicken and angel hair pasta are dinner staples. Simply Recipes took the two and make a comforting baked pasta that will feed hungry dinner companions and be budget friendly. Tips: You can use all parts of the chicken but drumsticks and thighs tend to be economical and the most flavorful. Consider upping the oregano and adding a teaspoon of basil. Make sure to adequately salt the chicken before roasting. Underseasoned meat will be noticeable in this dish. Roasted Cauliflower Spaghetti: Sprouted Kitchen Mascarpone cheese makes a creamy sauce for roasted cauliflower and spaghetti. Roasting the cauliflower with nutmeg and smoked paprika gives the vegetable a subtle kick- one we would amp up when making again. Tips: Remember to reserve your pasta water to loosen the sauce- you will need it. We felt the sauce could use additional kick. Next time around we would double the spices and maybe add hot paprika to round out the flavors. From the Smorgasbord: Tackling questions and comments from our listeners; Tyler suggests adding mustard to the Kale, Apple and Cheddar salad from Episode 3. We think this is a great idea. Thanks, Tyler! Starving in the Bleachers asked, "Please help! I have 2 boys, age 6 and 9. Two nights a week they have swim practice followed by baseball. On a good night we have an hour at home in between to change clothes, eat dinner and head to baseball and sometimes we have to eat in the car between the two activities. Any ideas on what to serve them for dinner so we can stay away from fast food drive thrus??” Kate suggested buying a few medium sized plastic containers and using themfor homemade lunchables. Perhaps reheating the salmon patties from Episode 13  with some sliced cucumbers or pancakes with bacon from Episode 11. She also suggests store-bought dumplings would work really well.  Betsy suggests cooking a pound of pasta at a time and keeping it in a gallon plastic bag in the fridge for really busy nights. When boiling water takes too long, this could be a lifesaver.  Ana asked, "I made the BBQ meatloaf from Episode 3 in a loaf pan but I didn't know how long to cook it and it fell apart afterwards. What happened? Any tips?" Betsy makes a lot of meatloaf and did some research and found a few things: Most meatloaves take about 45 mins to an hour to cook. Good rule of thumb.  Use an 80/20 hamburger mix. This should keep the meatloaf together.  Alton Brown's Meatloaf Recipe has methods that many people swear by. Perhaps that's the ticket! Sandwiches! Broccoli Subs, French Dip, and Salmon Pita From a meat-eater’s french dip to a vegetarian’s dream broccoli sub, the Dinner Sisters find some new sandwiches and a classic for a weeknight dinner or even a party. Let’s go beyond a grilled cheese and find some fun sandwiches for a delicious handheld dinner. The Best Slow Cooker French Dip: Delish The delicious aroma of the roast beef braising might torture you, but the wait will be worth it!  A chuck roast cooks in a savory braise for hours to make a tender, melty-cheesy sandwich that works for parties or just a party of one. Tips: You can use a traditional slow cooker or the slow cook feature on the Instant Pot. This could also work in a low- 225 degree- oven. We haven’t tried this using the pressure cooker feature of the Instant Pot but maybe? Make the sandwiches with a bread that can stand up to the dip in au jus. A ciabatta roll or sturdy french bread. Skip baking and broil the cheese instead. You get your sandwich much faster, which is always a good thing. If you are reheating the sandwich, pop the meat in the microwave for 30 seconds before you broil. Herbed Salmon Pita Pockets: Andie Mitchell Canned salmon isn’t everyone’s pantry staple, but maybe it should be if you can make these tasty salmon patties. You stuff the patties in a pita with lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes and top it off with an herby yogurt sauce. Tips: We thought these patties would be nice outside the sandwich- maybe the yogurt as a dipping sauce? Another idea- make them smaller and serve as an appetizer either on their own or in mini pitas. Check out the salmon- some is canned with skin and bones. Choose a brand or can without those. Garlicky Broccoli Subs: The Kitchn Here’s a sandwich where the sum is better than each of the parts. Roast broccoli and pile it on french bread with peppadew peppers, french fried onions, feta cheese, and a tangy sauce. Serve it warm or wrap well for a tasty, hearty vegetarian option. Tips: Serve it warm or wrap well for a tasty, hearty vegetarian option. Roast the broccoli ahead of time and assemble the sandwich when you’re ready. This sandwich travels well- wrap tightly in cling wrap or wax paper. Keep cool and you’ll have a lovely meal waiting for you. A party menu with these sandwiches and the french dip might just be the best of all worlds. We successfully made this dairy-free by eliminating the feta. Our taste-tester still loved it! You could go all the way vegan by using a vegan mayo and substituting coconut aminos for the fish sauce. From the Smorgasbord… The James Beard Awards are given every spring. How Hot Dogs Explain Content Marketing with Krista Mashore, Ep. 43

Just The Tips, with James P. Friel and Dean Holland

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2018 38:01

This week on Just the Tips we have a guest who has been a client of mine, a friend of mine, and ultimately someone I greatly admire. Krista Mashore is a realtor in Northern California who has sold more than 100 house a year for nearly her entire career, placing her in the top 1% of realtors in the nation. She’s someone who has really found her own way of doing things, and obviously found enormous success in her own approach. So on this episode we talk not just about her secrets to real estate, but how her approach translates to sales in general. It’s not often you get to talk to someone who’s in the top 1% of their field, and you’re going to want to hear what she has to say. You’re always on a job interview Krista’s story is kind of amazing: She was a teacher for years, and she left that job to sort of casually sell real estate and be home with her family more. Well, as soon as she made that transition, she learned her husband was having an affair, and went from being a dabbler in real estate to selling 69 homes in her first year. As she says, she went into “pure survival mode” and became an expert seller. As Krista says on this episode of Just the Tips: “You’re always on a job interview.” No matter what you do, people are always going to be aware of you and how you do things. So if you do things well and you do them differently or in your own way, you have a real chance to distinguish yourself. And how do you do that? Listen to this week’s episode. Always bring value Aside from being an enormously successful realtor, Krista has launched a red-hot coaching business in the last year. Just in the last week, before we recorded this episode, it brought in more than $100,000. And one of the keys to that is what she calls “engagement marketing,” where you’re educating your consumer on the subject matter you’re an expert in. That means not just providing them with valuable content, but also contributing to the community. And how does she do that? Listen to this week’s Just the Tips to learn her big tip (after she spends some time questioning the title of this show). The overnight success that took years Krista has been incredibly forward-thinking about her use of engagement marketing and her use of video to connect with customers, and it’s really put her ahead of the curve. But as Dean says on this week’s episode, hers is really the “overnight success that took years,” because she put in the work to understand video, facebooks ads, content marketing, etc. But then once she did all of that work, now it’s up and running and the ROI is off the charts for her. And she is full of great advice for how you can translate her success to your business, though for some reason when I asked her about my business, she just used a hot dog-fart analogy. Nevertheless, she is full of energy, full of insight, and I think you guys are really going to love this episode of Just the Tips. Outline of This Episode [3:45] Krista’s origin story [5:53] The secret to staying on top of your game [9:18] Creating a great customer experience [17:25] How she built her coaching business [20:36] The overnight success that took forever [27:50] Working with entrepreneurs Resources & People Mentioned Krista Mashore Krista’s book Music for “Just The Tips” is titled, “Happy Happy Game Show” by Kevin MacLeod (http://incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License Connect With James and Dean James P. I knew SETC’s (Southeastern Theatre Conference) as a great audition opportunity for college students, but I learned they have opportunities for actors at all stages of their career. Check out my conversation with Marci Duncan, the audition committee chair, as I get some insider info on how to prepare for and what to expect at the big spring auditions. www.setc.org Marci Duncan -Actor -Audition committee chair for SETC -Florida Theatre Conference Screening Coordinator -Professor at University of West Florida -One-on-one actor coach SETC is one of the largest theatre conferences around - and there are so many different opportunities there. SETC is for: -Professional actors (AEA, SAG/AFTRA) -Just starting out/recent college graduates -Current college students, looking for summer stock/graduation opportunities -Transfer auditions -Grad School prospective students -High School - looking for programs/getting experience/networking/workshops SETC also provides scholarships. -Go to the website and put “scholarships” in the search engine, and you’ll get the info. Workshops -Over 300 workshops during the conference. These are workshops for the actor, professor, musician, technical theatre, etc. QUESTION: I’m in college and looking for summer stock work or just about to graduate, how do I get to audition? -Go to SETC WEBSITE, click on the screening auditions. (If you’re in college, you’ll have to be screened before being sent on to the main conference in the spring). -Each state has a coordinating conference at which they do these screenings. BUT make sure you register on the SETC website and not that state’s website. -The screening auditions are in early fall, starting in October and ending in early December. You don’t have to wait long - notified immediately. QUESTION: What do I need to prepare? What should I expect? -Musical Theatre candidates: You can sing and you can do a monologue, and you have 90 seconds total. You can do just a song, or a song and a monologue. They encourage you to do both as most companies want to hear both. -SETC does NOT encourage a “sandwich audition” - sing, monologue, then sing. Accompanist provided. -Actor only: 60 seconds, choose one monologue. -The time starts with your name and audition number. If you choose to sing, the 90 second limit does not include the time you speak with your accompanist. For the screening auditions: -It’s basically a qualifier. There is no dance call; it’s just your audition. -In the spring at the official conference, it’s set up in the same way to the screening, but you will be called back by whoever wants to see you and if you are called for the dance call. For the main auditions: -You audition in a group, you leave with the same group and go to the holding room. Then you’ll be free to look in the callback room pending instructions. What opportunities/types of companies will be there and what material should I put forward? -Cruise Ships -Shakespeare Companies -Children’s Theatre -Professional Theatre -Repertory Companies -Regional Theatre Companies -All of the attending companies will be posted on SETC website TIP: Shape your audition for what you want to book – check out the attending company websites in advance. QUESTION: Should I change my package between qualifiers? -Wouldn’t recommend - it’s why you qualified. Look up the theatre companies attending. TIPS: -You need to be clear if you want to do musical theatre, straight plays, Shakespeare, or cruise line work. Be specific and tailor to it -List your true availability, especially if you’re in college. Only say you can work year-round if you can. - Make sure you look up who is attending - know who you’re auditioning for and what to prepare. Prepare for the callback. Bring your book - have backup pieces. You never know what a particular company will see you as. Be prepared - they may have you do cold readings. Practice that with your friends. Don’t change your outfit before callbacks - they’ll remember the first outfit. But do bring tennis shoes for running around during the day. Dance Call: At the dance call, they teach you a dance and you perform it in groups. There are three levels: -Actors who move -Intermediate (Contemporary etc.) -Tap Bring Dance attire, not sweats. SECRET! All the companies get together at the bar and they talk, so… Be nice to everyone. Don’t gripe or vent - you never know who’s listening. If I don’t make it and get passed on, what do I do? -Treat it like a learning experience. -Go to the workshops. -Network. -You can go to the conference without being signed up for the auditions. There are also Professional Fall auditions. -These are for people just starting out or have some professional credits and don’t need to be screened. This is in Atlanta - no conference around these. Just audition, callback, dance call. TIP: Another way to get involved and on the radar: Reach out to SETC Audition committee to see if there’s someone close to come to do a workshop. Remember it’s for the networking – make connections so you can reach out and get involved. Get internships, work for them. Also: You can still go and participate without auditioning. You can attend workshops and networking events as much as you like! If you want to speak more with Marci or are interested in working with her as a one-on-one coach, contact her at artistsatplayworkshops.com or email her at artistsatplayworkshops@gmail.com. *End of Interview* Notes from Michelle - P.S. I forgot to mention you should bring (already put together) pictures and resumes to the auditions. The employers might ask for them at the callbacks. P.P.S. Here are some recommendations for a packing list: -Book (of music if you're a singer) -Copy of your monologue (just for practice) -Audition outfit & shoes -Hair &/or make-up items to freshen up (and pull back hair, if needed for dance audition) -Comfy shoes (to walk around in for the rest of the day) -Dance Clothes & shoes -Water & Healthy Snacks -Pictures & Resumes -Notebook and pen (for notes on seminars, networking, feedback & callbacks) -Phone & wallet P.P.P.S – Social links for SETC      https://www.facebook.com/setc.org/      https://twitter.com/setctweet      https://www.linkedin.com/company/southeastern-theatre-conference      https://www.instagram.com/setc/ A HUGE thank you to Marci for sharing her time with my audience!!!
