How can we better educate and organize ourselves to be better manifestations of nature? I discuss what I learned from my lazy day yesterday and I how I think about moving towards a better future.

It's fairly rare to come across a ghost story with a relatively happy ending--where the living are able to accommodate the dead, and even provide them with assistance. But one such story happened in 1957. (The Ashes and Ghost of Elizabeth Bullock) *** Imagine being born without arms or legs. How would you manage? How would you live your life? People have, of course, been born this way – but two very interesting men not only made the best of it they could – but they made the rest of the world take notice! (No Arms, No Legs, Lots of Everything Else) *** The bloodstain remains on the floor to this day—and several witnesses have claimed to see a black mist materialize from the spot and glide through the house. We’ll look at a haunted home in Pennsylvania that goes by the name Grumblethorpe. (Grumblethorpe) *** We’ve all had a trick of the light make it appear something was on the other side of a window, only for us to change angles and the image would disappear – but what if the image doesn’t, and you know it can’t be there? (Creepy Floaty Faced Thing) *** Witnesses say they have seen people vanish into thin air. Drivers and motorists saw a young woman suddenly materialize in front of their vehicles. There are some strange things being seen around Blue Bell Hill in Kent, United Kingdom. (Mysterious Sightings at Blue Bell Hill) *** Murdered in Montana in 1983, Marie Philbrick was killed in the days before DNA analysis. Bernard Pease Jr. was convicted of her murder, but was he really her killer? (The Murder Trial of Bernard Pease, Jr.) *** There was a time where being physically fit wasn’t just good for your heart health and good lungs – but also good for your head. If you could beat the executioner in a foot race, you could avoid the guillotine! “EXECUTION BY URINE” and More Creepy, True, and Horrifying Stories! #WeirdDarknessIf you like the podcast, please leave a review in the podcast app you listen from, and share a link to the podcast on Facebook and Twitter to invite others to become Weirdos too!IN THIS EPISODE: When you think of methods of execution, what comes to mind? Electric chair? Hanging? Firing squad? Lethal injection? Or perhaps something a bit more historic like guillotine, or even stoning. But I’m guessing the last thing you’d think of for a method of execution would be death by golden shower. (Death by Urination) *** Had Daniel Lambert been alive today, he would’ve carted his more than 700 pounds around in a motorized scooter, as too many morbidly obese people choose to do. But in the early 1800s, such amenities weren’t available, because there was no market for them. Lambert was a true anomaly. And people couldn’t get enough of him. (Daniel Lambert: Fat Man On Display) *** A woman describes how frightened she was when working in a school after hours – so frightened that now, over 23-years-later, she still has trouble sleeping due to the fear she experienced. (Horrible, No-good, Very Bad Schoolhouse) *** An eerie painting spooked many who just saw it. Those who owned it fared worse. Could this piece, painted in 1972, truly be haunted? (The Hands Resist Him: Haunted Painting) *** From murdering children to drinking blood, Peter Kürten was "the king of the sexual perverts" and perhaps the worst serial killer ever. So it’s no surprise he would be tagged with the word “vampire” to describe him. (The Abominations Of Peter Kürten - Vampire Of Düsseldorf)

This tragedy would lead to what is still one of that country's most famous cases of judicial injustice. Assuming, of course, that it truly was an injustice at all. (The Mysterious Death of Marc Antoine Calas) *** Most know them as “The Hidden Folk.” The elusive and magical residents of Iceland, who live inside rocks and sometimes play games with unsuspecting passers-by. Are they real? That’s a complicated question, if you ask Icelanders. (The Elves of Iceland) *** As two boys were walking back to the house on their farm, a small stone rolled past them. Then a second one. They immediately thought some other boys were hiding in the scrub and throwing stones for a joke.  They couldn’t have been more wrong. (Stone Throwing Spirits) *** Belle Gunness lured numerous suitors to her Indiana farm. Not to entertain them or to be courted by them. She simply wanted to kill them in cold blood and dump their bodies in her hog pen. (Belle Gunness – The Black Widow of the Midwest) *** Were people ever really tortured in Iron Maidens? (The Iron Maiden) *** "They're going to steal your organs!" screamed Sabina Eriksson, before running toward oncoming traffic on the M6 highway, having already been hit head-on by a Volkswagen. Her twin sister, Ursula, legs crushed by the truck that had just run her over, was spitting and screaming at paramedics on the side of the road. Kurt was struck by an article on the National Public Radio site that indicated the United States is significantly behind the rest of the civilized world when it comes to modernized toileting. That caused us to take a closer look at the behavioral science behind what’s keeping the US market from adopting higher tech versions of the porcelain throne. With toilet paper flying off the shelves, one wonders WHY more Americans aren't scooping up bidets. (In fact, they are starting to. And that was the beginning of her very strange afterlife. What if extraterrestrial life is indistinguishable from the laws of physics? But then there is a hotel in Wales that is haunted.. but no one seems to know about it. SUBJECTIVEIn episode 4, we ask the important questions about the Aquaman cinematic universe (and also spend a not insignificant amount of time thirsting after Jason Momoa).(I mean, look at him.)Anyway. What is up with the physiological class stratification of Atlanteans? Is blonde hair a curse? Why is Pinocchio so important to this movie? AND WHY WON'T ANYONE TALK ABOUT THE DINOSAURS??? We answer none of these questions and answer a bunch of other ones in this ep!OBJECTIVEResources, Citations, and Mentions:How Fish Gills Work, Today I Found Out, Sep 2011The Multifunctional Fish Gill: Dominant Site of Gas Exchange, Osmoregulation, Acid-Base Regulation, and Excretion of Nitrogenous Waste - David H. (The True Story of the Pied Piper) *** Ever woken up suddenly by a loud blast like a gun shot or slamming door, only to wake up and realize there really was no sound at all that was made? This is known as Exploding Head Syndrome, and if you’ve experienced it, you’ve likely not got long to live. Or do you? (Exploding Head Syndrome) *** In 1944, the small town of Mattoon, Illinois was terrorized by a man in black who, according to witnesses and testimony, attacked unsuspecting homeowners with a paralyzing gas he would spray through their windows. Who was he? Why did he do it? The man and the motive are still a mystery. (The Mad Gasser of Mattoon) *** When you hear the name Jigsaw, you likely immediately think of the puppet with the creepy voice of a serial killer who sets up elaborate deaths for his victims in a game only he enjoys. But in 1935 another man’s brutal deeds earned him the same nickname… only his story wasn’t Hollywood fiction. (The Real Jigsaw)

Here are some keywords/phrases to get your googling started: – Mass Extinction Event: a significant, global decrease in the diversity of life – "Big 5": The five biggest mass extinction events since the Cambrian explosion of Life 550 million years ago – Biodiversity Crisis: Like a mass extinction, a biodiversity crisis is a marked depletion in diversity in the fossil record. Some scientists prefer to call the late-Devonian extinction a "biodiversity crisis" because a lack of speciation contributed to the loss in diversity just as much as extinction did. – Diversity curve: A line chart that shows the diversity of life (usually by genera, but sometimes by species or family) over time – Lagerstatte: a deposit of sedimentary rock that contains a profound number of fossils, often with excellent preservation – Shareholder Quorum Subsampling: A statistical method that corrects for some of the biases in the fossil record, allowing scientists to generate more accurate diversity curves ___________________________________________ Credits: Script Writer: Emily Elert (twitter:@eelert) Script Editor: Kate Yoshida (twitter:@KateYoshida) Video Illustrator: Ever Salazar (twitter:@eversalazar) Video Director: Emily Elert (twitter:@eelert) With Contributions From: Henry Reich (twitter:@minutephysics), Alex Reich (twitter:@alexhreich), Peter Reich Music by: Nathaniel Schroeder: http://www.soundcloud.com/drschroeder _________________________________________ Like our videos?
