In the 1970s Highgate Cemetery became the stuff of legends, with rumors of a vampire, bizarre occultic rituals, and a rivalry so wild it could've been lifted out of a horror novel.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*Take the Weird Darkness Survey: https://weirddarkness.com/SURVEYIN THIS EPISODE: Did a vampire stalk London's Highgate cemetery in the 1970s? (Highgate Vampire: The Horror of the Dead) *** He was alone at home when firemen were called. The entire house was blazing... except for one room. The room that contained the corpse of J. Temple Thurston. (The Mysterious Death of J. Temple Thurston) *** A ghostly spirit brings comfort to a dying man's grandchild. (A Comforting Nurse) *** Death comes to us all, but today children are shielded from the reality of death – only the stylized version they see in television and film. But years ago, when there was a death, it was a family affair – everyone of all ages participated in the funeral and grieving process. And some people coped with their grief by being artistic – such as writing a weird song called “The Hearse Song”. *** We all know people who love nature and the outdoors. Some will even have their own gardens and will talk to the flowers and plants, thinking it will help them thrive. But how would you react when you are sure the plants are talking back to you? (The Girl Who Talks To Trees) *** Mitchell Quy watched while the police looked for his missing wife; he even joined the search himself. No one ever expected that Mitchell was the one who had killed her. (He Murdered His Wife – Then Pretended To Look For Her) *** In 1986, the Tallmanns moved into what they thought was the ideal family home. They couldn't have been more wrong. (Sharing Bunk Beds With Evil) *** A Weirdo family member shares how he has been stalked by a terrifying entity for many years. (The Sinister Caprine Creature) *** Not even the serial killer Dennis Nilsen himself can say exactly how many people he murdered. There were just too many. (Britain's Kindly Killer) *** How is it possible for a man as powerful and prominent as a Supreme Court judge to disappear forever? It happened to the Big Apple's Justice Joseph F. Crater. “They all did it. They're all guilty.” — Amy LittlefieldWho killed Roe? Amy Littlefield, the abortion access correspondent at The Nation and big time Agatha Christie fan, has written a true crime book about it. Literally. Killers of Roe treats the death of the constitutional right to abortion as a murder mystery in the Poirot or Miss Marple tradition, complete with suspects, motives, and a forensic reconstruction of the 50-year crime scene. The suspects have Christie-style names: the Racist (Jesse Helms), the Little Brother (James Buckley), the Devout Bureaucrat (Paul Herring), the Closeted Congressman (Bob Bauman), and of course Mr Hyde Amendment himself, Henry Hyde — six foot three, helmet of white hair, serial groper of women who ensured poor women lost access first. The Hyde Amendment is where the crime begins: 1976, a ban on federal funding of abortion. If you're poor, the Supreme Court ruled, that's your problem. The constitutional right exists, but don't expect anyone to pay for it. Surprise surprise. Black women, low-income women, women on Medicaid understood immediately. Democrats and mainstream pro-choice groups took longer to notice. By which time the damage was done — and the playbook established: chip away at access rather than try to ban it outright.Littlefield is more Miss Marple than Poirot — unassuming, persistent, sitting with her suspects for hours until they tell her why they did it. The devout bureaucrat, Paul Herring, spent their interviews trying to convert her to Catholicism. Henry Hyde made a pass at the president of Planned Parenthood during a commercial break on the Phil Donahue show. Bob Bauman — closeted, adopted, alcoholic — confessed to her that his anti-abortion politics may have come from identifying with the unwanted fetus, because that could have been him. These are complicated people doing terrible things for reasons they believe are righteous. And the ending? Littlefield steals it from Murder on the Orient Express. They all did it. Every suspect is guilty — including the Democrats who failed to defend poor women, and the pro-choice movement that didn't fight hard enough for the most vulnerable. Since the Dobbs decision in 2022: 59 excess pregnancy-associated deaths, 500 additional infant deaths, 22,000 additional births. The numbers aren't a Miss Marple mystery. The crime is ongoing. And Trump, who declared himself “very pro-choice” before he appointed the justices who drove the final nail in, is the ultimate opportunist — a fat, orange haired version of Hyde. Murder on the Abortion Express. They all did it. All the men, at least. Five Takeaways• The Hyde Amendment Is Where the Crime Begins: 1976. A ban on federal funding of abortion. Poor women lost access first. Black women, women on Medicaid understood immediately. Democrats and mainstream pro-choice groups took longer to notice. By which time the playbook was established.• The Anti-Abortion Movement Stole the Language of Civil Rights: White conservatives who didn't want to think about the harms of white supremacy found an escape valve: their own civil rights movement, with the fetus — almost always imagined as white — as the victim.• The Suspects Are Complicated. The Crime Is Not: Henry Hyde groped women during commercial breaks. Bob Bauman — closeted, adopted, alcoholic — identified with the unwanted fetus. Paul Herring tried to convert Littlefield to Catholicism. Complicated people, terrible consequences.• The Numbers Are Real: Since the Dobbs decision in 2022: 59 excess pregnancy-associated deaths. 500 additional infant deaths. 22,000 additional births. The crime is ongoing.• They All Did It: Littlefield steals her ending from Murder on the Orient Express. Every suspect is guilty — including the Democrats who failed to defend poor women, and the pro-choice movement that didn't fight hard enough for the most vulnerable. All the men, at least. About the GuestAmy Littlefield is the abortion access correspondent at The Nation. Her new book is Killers of Roe: My Investigation into the Mysterious Death of Abortion Rights. She is based in Boston.References:• Killers of Roe by Amy Littlefield — the book under discussion.• The Hyde Amendment (1976) — the ban on federal funding of abortion that first stripped access from poor women on Medicaid.• The Helms Amendment — Jesse Helms' restriction on abortion funding abroad through USAID, leading to thousands of preventable deaths worldwide.• Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (2022) — the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.• Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie — the structural model for Littlefield's conclusion: they all did it.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. After the infamous Kansas City Massacre, reports of Frank Nash's ghost haunting Union Station keep the memory of his violent end alive.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: One of paranormal history's most bizarre, worldwide, phenomena, the Men In Black, traces its origin directly back to one man, and his name was Albert. (The Albert K. Bender Story) *** Daryl Collins' encounters demonstrate the sheer level of weirdness that surrounds the UFO phenomenon. (Alien Abductions and High Strangeness) *** A young girl sees an odd cube shape floating in her back yard among the trees. Was it extraterrestrial, paranormal, or just the wild imagination of a child? (Floating Multi-Color Box) *** What began as a joke to tease his sister, became all too real for the boy. (Ouija) *** Legend has it that a man murdered his wife and young daughter, before committing suicide. Has this caused the Banff Springs Hotel to become haunted? (Room 873) *** Frank Nash was not only an infamous outlaw, but he could escape just about any prison – even the prison of his own coffin after being dead and buried. (The Kansas City Massacre) *** Due to a murderous plot, 11-year old Terry Jo Duperrault spent 84 grueling hours alone at sea until she was rescued. (Orphaned At Sea) *** Moving into your own place alone for the first time is often an exciting moment in a young adult's life – but it can also be a bit nerve-racking. But then, it probably doesn't help if you move into a place that is haunted. (My Closet Door) *** The true story of Rasputin is full of both truths and lies. Was he a controversial mystic with healing powers, or an evil or misunderstood man? Maybe he was a little of both. (Rasputin) *** The Lake Club in Springfield, Illinois had its heyday in 1940s and 50s – and not even a lingering ghost could stop the parties. In Killers of Roe: My Investigation Into the Mysterious Death of Abortion Rights (Legacy Lit, 2026) reporter Amy Littlefield investigates the secret killers and hidden motives behind the death of abortion rights. They are going to kill people, investigative reporter for The Nation Littlefield knew, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. As a journalist covering abortion for more than a decade, she had already chronicled many near-death experiences caused by anti-abortion policy. After the anti-abortion movement's staggering defeat of Roe, she became fascinated with their victory and why they seemed so much better organized than the pro-choice movement. She set out to investigate the murderers of Roe. Killers of Roe chronicles Littlefield's journey into the unexplored corners of the most successful social movement of our time. As in every good murder mystery, the killers turn out to be the people you least suspect, like a disgraced former Congressman obsessed with offshore tax evasion and an unknown suburban bureaucrat who wrote America's most diabolical anti-abortion policy. She reports from a sweaty presidential tour bus in DC, a chaotic Michigan courtroom where a former fetus thief is on trial, and a Texas town that rejects an abortion travel ban. She encounters surprising characters who shed light on how we got to this moment of authoritarian rule: from the pro-choice superfans she meets at the Reagan library to the Senator who couldn't stop kissing every woman he met. Along the way, Amy draws upon the stories of women who have died from anti-abortion policies and on her own experience as a mother to reveal the life-and-death stakes of America's abortion wars. At once clever and poignant reportage, this abortion whodunnit uncovers the deeper story of how we lost Roe--and how we can win back so much more. Learn more about your ad choices. (Orig. Pub Date: 11/10/21) In January of 1923, a 20-year-old dancer named Fritzie Mann left home to meet a mysterious man for what she told her mother was a house party. When she was discovered dead on a remote beach a few miles north of San Diego, police were puzzled by the clues. Was it an accident, suicide, or murder? The fact that she was pregnant deepened the mystery even further. Soon two men – a Hollywood actor and a doctor – became the primary suspects in the case, and one would eventually be put on trial for murder. My guest is James Stewart, author of “Mystery at the Blue Sea Cottage: A True Story of Murder in San Diego's Jazz Age”. He shares details about strange death of Fritzie Mann, considered by some to be San Diego's very own Black Dahlia, and offers intriguing theories on what might really have happened to her. Eight days later, across state lines, Brent's body was found face down in a drainage ditch. No injuries. No clear cause of death. What began as a missing-person case soon spiraled into something bigger: accusations, rumors, and more than 30 witnesses — including police officers — drawn into the investigation. Listen as Hopper returns to his hometown to revisit a mystery still shadowed by unanswered questions and a silence that refuses to fade. Don't forget to subscribe to Hopper's podcast, Final Trace. From invisible walls that stop cars and people cold, to centuries of witnesses watching ancient Roman armies march through a lake that shouldn't be dry — something unexplained is breaking through the boundary between our world and whatever lies beyond it.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: Ever since President Zachary Taylor died suddenly in 1850 after just 16 months in office, many have suspected foul play on the part of his political enemies. Is it possible that, despite what the history books say, Zachary Taylor was the first U.S. President to be assassinated? (The Mysterious Death of Zachary Taylor) *** Walking into an invisible wall or force field is a science-fiction trope… but perhaps it's not so fictional as you think, seeing as there are numerous cases of people encountering that very thing in real life. (Invisible Barriers and Time Portals) *** According to numerous legends and beliefs, the “White Gods“ once came to Earth and helped humanity develop and prosper by offering knowledge in many ways. Could those white gods have been extraterrestrials? (The White Alien God of the Meso-Americans) *** Over a hundred children were found stalking a graveyard, armed with knives and sharpened sticks in order to kill a vampire that had already killed and eaten two children in Glasgow… and this one event snowballed into a crackdown on comic books. (Comics and the Gorbals Vampire) *** A scientist dies at the South Pole with a lethal dose of methanol in his blood, a government cover-up blocks the investigation, and somewhere out on the ice, a man who disappeared decades ago may still be walking. **Discussion begins at 4:15**In this episode, we lay the groundwork on who Jeffrey Epstein was and how he rose from relative obscurity to the center of one of the most disturbing criminal cases of the modern era. We walk through the criminal charges he faced in 2008, the controversial plea deal that allowed him to avoid federal prosecution, and the renewed scrutiny that led to his 2019 arrest on federal sex trafficking charges. From there, we unpack the final days of Epstein's life and the official ruling of suicide, while acknowledging why the circumstances of his death continue to fuel conspiracy theories. We'll also examine how Epstein's case became entangled with Pizzagate, and discuss the claims and speculation surrounding a woman named Gabriela Rico Jimenez. We'll discuss why Epstein remains a lightning rod in the public imagination years after his death, and start a deep dive into the newly released Epstein Files. In 1931, Adolf Hitler's 23-year-old niece, Geli Raubal, was found dead in the Führer's Munich apartment. Authorities ruled it a suicide. But the evidence didn't settle easily—and neither did the silence that followed. Some journalists tried to make sense of the story but had trouble as the case files were quickly sealed. So they reported on emerging contradictions in the evidence and disagreements among witnesses. Within a few years, the people who tried to challenge Hitler's version of events would pay a devastating price.

When U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the death of a detainee at a Texas detention camp this month, the agency initially gave no cause of death. A fellow detainee said he witnessed Geraldo Lunas Campos being choked to death by guards; ICE said “staff observed him in distress.” Seeking answers, Lunas Campos's family called El Paso County's Office of the Medical Examiner, and an employee told them that – subject to the result of a toxicology report – the office is likely to classify Lunas Campos's death as a homicide. Today on “Post Reports,” investigative reporter Douglas MacMillan tries to find out what really caused the death of a detainee – and takes us inside the black box of the largest detention camp in the United States. Today's show was produced by Emma Talkoff. It was edited by Ariel Plotnick, Dennis Funk and Martine Powers and mixed by Sean Carter. Thanks also to Juliet Eilperin. Brittany Murphy, the talented actress known for Clueless, Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, and Uptown Girls, died at age 32 on December 20, 2009, in her Hollywood Hills home from accidental pneumonia, severe anemia, and prescription drug intoxication. Five months later, her husband Simon Monjack died in the same house from nearly identical causes. Official investigations ruled both deaths accidental and preventable, with no evidence of foul play, illegal drugs, toxic mold, or poisoning. Despite this, speculation continues around toxic mold, heavy metal poisoning (based on a disputed hair test), Sharon Murphy's possible role (as Brittany's devoted mother, sole heir, and close companion to Simon after the death), the home's eerie history (previous owners Madonna and Britney Spears reported unsettling “haunted” experiences), and even far-fetched links to Sean “P Diddy” Combs. As of 2026, experts maintain the deaths were tragic coincidences due to untreated illness and self-medication, with no credible evidence supporting conspiracy theories. This episode supports The Branch of Hope Foundation January 2025 sponsored charity: The Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation - A charitable organization established in 2020 by their daughter Alex Krawczyk to honor the memory and continue the philanthropic vision of Barry Sherman, the founder of Apotex, and his wife Honey, following their tragic deaths in 2017. Its primary purpose is to support charitable organizations focused on healthcare equity, human rights, scientific education and research, and Jewish community institutions, thereby furthering the couple's unfinished philanthropic aims. The foundation directs grants to initiatives that improve lives, advance medical care and accessibility (such as donations to hospitals and vision care programs), promote scientific discovery, and strengthen community organizations. By building on the Shermans' long-standing commitment to giving it creates a lasting legacy of impactful philanthropy. Sources: Chubb, H., & Krauser, E. (2025, December 20). After the discovery of the burnt car that belonged to millionaire Houston oilman Ed Baker, speculation was abound. Though the medical examiner finally ruled that the body found inside was indeed Edward Gerald Baker's, some folks didn't buy the ruling. They insisted the oilman had faked his own death and skipped country to avoid the lawsuits against his company or worse – jail time. Harris County Sheriff's Investigators, however, didn't really buy that. Though they seemed to believe that Ed's death was the result of an elaborately planned suicide, they couldn't prove it and still had to leave their minds open to the theory that the man was killed as the result of a mob hit. To this day, exactly what happened to Ed Baker remains a mystery. Part 2 of 2. If you have any information about Edward Gerald Baker's case, please contact Crime Stoppers Houston at 713-222-8477. In November of 1985, rice farmers harvesting crops just north of the Texas small town of Katy found the smoldering remains of a car in one of the fields. Inside the vehicle, Harris County Sheriff's Deputies found a badly charred and disfigured body. Later that day, it was discovered that the burnt car belonged to millionaire Houston oilman Ed Baker. As the investigation progressed, the murky waters only muddied further. To this day, precisely what happened to Ed Baker remains a mystery.Part 1 of 2. When 20-year-old Amanda Wienckowski vanished one night in Buffalo, her mom, Leslie, refused to sit back and wait for answers. She begged police to listen and even parked outside the house where Amanda was last seen — for weeks — hoping her daughter would walk out the front door. What followed would test every ounce of a mother's strength: a case full of contradictions, silence from the system, and a fight that would stretch on for more than a decade. This is the story of a mother who wouldn't let the world forget her daughter — no matter how long it takes for justice.
