We're back. After a break of what feels like years, but may only be about five months, we're reinvigorated and ready to beguile our audience with more Hidden Wiltshire nonsense. Towards the end of 2022 Glyn and Paul had reached burn out after 41 episodes. We needed a break to think about what to do and where to go next, whilst sticking firmly to Wiltshire. Whilst we were away from the podcast we continued to pepper the Facebook page and website with blogs. But if we're honest our survival was mainly due to the new member of the Hidden Wiltshire family – Elaine Perkins. Elaine has been posting blogs for some time now and has brought fresh impetus to what we do. But we weren't going to let her get away with just that! So, please welcome Elaine to the podcast. This is her first and she took to it like a duck to water.  We had planned to record this episode on location at Morgan's Hill to the north of Devizes. But with winds of 60mph and heavy rain forecast we decided the top of a hill was not the most sensible place to be! As it was, despite being ensconced in a spare bedroom at home, Paul still sounds like he was recording in a wind tunnel.  As usual we began this episode by looking back at what we've been doing since the previous episode. And since that was in November 2022 the answer is - quite a lot. So we had a not so quick run through the blogs. You'll find links to them below.  Firstly, Elaine revisited Vernditch Chase in an effort to find the mythical Kitt's Grave (spoiler alert – she failed). Different maps show the grave in different places so is it any wonder it is so difficult to find? Folklore says it is the grave of a young woman who killed herself and, as was the custom, was buried on the parish boundary at a junction of tracks. Others say that it is a prehistoric long barrow, and one person at least claims to have found it in the adjacent wood. Will you find it?  Next Elaine wrote about her visit to Great Durnford and Ogbury Camp, an Iron Age univallate hill fort south west of Amesbury located above the Woodford Valley. The manor of Great Durford has existed since the 11th century and whilst in the village church Elaine believes she may have found evidence of a 16th century murder!  Then Elaine ventured to Clarendon Palace and the forest, which she visited shortly after Storm Eunice. A hunting ground for Saxon and later Norman kings, it would once have formed part of a much larger area of forest but it is now little more than a wood.  Next it was Paul's turn and in February he returned to Fisherton de la Mare for the first time in nearly 30 years, where he met the current owners of a house he so very nearly bought all those years ago. From here, it was a walk across the flood plain of the Wylye River, along the road then up to the small National Nature Reserve of Wylye Down.  During Valentine's week Elaine decided on a walk to Lover, Bohemia and Paradise all in one day! Lover is famous for its Valentine's Day stamps that can be bought and posted from the village for those of a romantic disposition. It transpires that Paradise was misnamed, it being a wood plastered with “Private” signs.  Then Paul (together with his trusted walking buddy Stu) undertook what turned into an epic walk taking in West Lavington, Market Lavington and the Wessex Ridgeway. In heavy snow it felt like an arctic expedition. Plans to visit the churches in both villages were thwarted as they were both locked. Which is a shame as All Saint's Church in West Lavington contains a stunning engraved window, the work of Simon Whistler nephew of the artist Rex Whistler. It can though be seen from the A360 below as you sit in queues of traffic trying to squeeze through the narrow bends to the south of the village.  Finally, Paul did the relatively short George Herbert Walk in Salisbury, following in the footsteps of poet, rector, writer and musician George Herbert who, in the early 1630s, walked twice a week from his parish in Bemerton to Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral. Modern development means it is impossible to follow what was his likely route precisely but on a warm dry day this is a delightful walk across the water meadows by the Nadder.  Eventually we got on to the main subject of this episode of the podcast. Glyn, Elaine and Paul wrote a joint blog about some of their favourite Wiltshire nature reserves. It was neatly divided up according to the volunteering that three of us do.   Paul is a volunteer for Natural England who are responsible for six National Nature Reserves in Wiltshire. Paul focused on his three favourites, all of which he has worked at as part of his volunteering duties – Pewsey Downs, Prescombe Down and Parsonage Down.  Glyn is a volunteer at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust who have nearly 40 reserves in the county. Glyn does livestock checks for them at Dunscombe Buttom but in the podcast (and in the blog) he focuses on Morgan's Hill, Blakehill Farm and Stoke Common Meadows.  Finally, Elaine takes a look at Wiltshire's two RSPB reserves - Winterbourne Downs and Franchises Wood. Elaine is a volunteer at the beautiful Winterbourne Downs reserve outside Newton Tony and is also helping a PhD student at Southampton University who is doing a thesis about chalk streams. This involves Elaine visiting the River Bourne, a winterbourne that flows through Winterbourne Downs and Newton Tony, on a regular basis. Francises Wood is a relatively new and small reserve close to the New Forest.  Then on to the wrap up for this episode:  There are one or two copies of the first Hidden Wiltshire book together with a few more of the second book on the website.  Thanks as always go to Steve Dixon for the music. As usual the piece at the beginning and the end of the podcast is called “The Holloway”, whilst the piece in the middle is a new one from Steve entitled “Wansdyke”. Because of course we had planned to record this episode on a hill looking down on Wansdyke!  Links:  Elaine's blog about Kitt's Grave can be found here Searching for Kitt's Grave Revisited  Elaine's blog about Great Durnford and Ogbury Camp can be found here Great Durnford, Ogbury and the Flood  Elaine's blog about Clarendon Palace is here Clarendon Place After Storm Eunice  Paul's return to a French outpost in Wiltshire (it isn't) can be found here A French Enclave in Wiltshire?  Elaine's search for romanticism during Valentine's week can be found here Lover, Bohemia and Paradise  You can read about Paul's arctic adventure on Salisbury Plain here The Lavingtons and the Wessex Ridgeway  And finally, Paul's attempt to retrace the steps of George Herbert can be found here George Herbert Walk  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Wiltshire Wildlife Trust you can contact them here Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Volunteering  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the RSPB you can contact them here RSPB Volunteering  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Natural England they tend to do it on a reserve by reserve basis so we'd suggest contacting Paul via the Hidden Wiltshire Contact page on our website at Hidden Wiltshire Contact Us  Glyn's photographs can be seen  on his Instagram feed @coy_cloud He is also very active on Twitter where his username is @Glyndle  Paul's photography can be found on his website at Paul Timlett Photography and on Instagram at @tragicyclist  Steve Dixon's sound art can be found on Soundcloud where his username is River and Rail Steve Dixon River and Rail. In the third episode of the PRI's human rights podcast series, the PRI's Elena Espinoza speaks to two members of Grenfell United, a group of survivors and bereaved families of the Grenfell Tower fire, and Simon Whistler, real assets lead at the PRI.  The Grenfell Tower fire occurred early in the morning of Wednesday 14 June 2017 in North Kensington, London. It spread quickly through the tower block's 24 stories, taking the lives of 72 people and injuring many more. After the disaster, it emerged that the cladding that was put on the tower during its refurbishment fuelled the fire. As a result of mounting pressure from bereaved families, investors have been selling shares in Grenfell Tower cladding firm Kingspan.   In this episode, Grenfell United speak about the ways in which they raised concerns before the fire and how they have engaged with investors who are tied to companies linked with the tragedy. The PRI's Simon Whistler then reflects on Grenfell United's testimony, outlining how investors can strengthen their due diligence processes and describing the lessons that investors internationally can learn. Introducing the first of our Mini Episodes!  In these mini-episodes, we’ll be exploring topics that are related to Shakespeare but aren’t necessarily connected to whatever play we’ve been discussing. And they’re mini, because well, they’re shorter than our other episodes. They’re like quartos if the regular episodes are folio editions.  In this episode, we dive into the Gunpowder Plot--an event which shook Early Modern England and shaped Shakespeare's Macbeth.  Shakespeare Anyone? is created, written, produced, and hosted by Korey Leigh Smith and Elyse Sharp. Our theme music is "Neverending Minute" by Sounds Like Sander. Works referenced:  Arnold, Catharine. Globe: Life in Shakespeare's London. Simon & Schuster UK Ltd., 2016. Greenblatt, Stephen. Now he has a podcast called Fowl Players Radio, coincidentally derived from the murder mystery troupe. sIt's going to take me 20 minutes just to put his links in the description, I almost want to pull a Simon Whistler and make all of 'em a Rick Roll, but I won't, they'll go where it says they do. It makes periodic appearances throughout the interview. I've been on Simon's Rocking Self Publishing Podcast twice, episodes 37 and 154. He juggles multiple content-heavy projects by prioritizing his time carefully. After 150 or so RSP episodes he felt it was slowing down, and moved to a biweekly schedule. His youtube channels were picking up, so he focused on them, and produces 14 episodes a week. Building daily systems for himself keeps his workdays productive. Bringing other people into your creative process helps distribute the weight as well. Simon is always refining his process to be more effective and efficient. Google Sheets are his taskmaster. Each month he uses a new sheet that tracks each video's current production status. I use Trello as a production schedule. Simon started podcasting and YouTubing at about the same time. The podcast found a niche audience faster, but over time the YouTube channels have proven to have a broader potential audience. YouTube is a more competitive place and it took longer to gain a foothold. Standard advice often promotes finding a narrow niche over going broad, but if you break through as something broad the audience is far more vast. As you gain exposure to and an understanding of your chosen discipline's market, you get a feel for what "gaps" exist that you can fulfill for broad or niche topics. Simon was having difficulty finding work with his law degree in London due to the shaky economy. He found an opportunity through AIESEC to work with a grassroots organization in Sri Lanka, in their media department. While there he met his girlfriend. He returned with her to what was then the Czech Republic, and is now Czechia. He went to a meetup for the Tropical MBA podcast in Prauge, and was inspired by the connection between hard work and success. He gave up freelancing to focus on podcasting and youtube 12-14 hours a day. People often avoid discussing how hard they work to achieve their successes. The more content you can feed a consumer, the more they'll come back. People binge. Do what you can to get involved in the community of creators you can count on. When you work really hard and pursue something you really like, good things will happen. Like this episode? Subscribe, rate, and review it on iTunes. Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show
Episode 46: 8 Free and Low-Cost Resources for Professional Development for Your Yarn-Related Business

Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2015 50:23

If you’re in the United States, you’re being bombarded with “back-to-school” advertising. I decided to put my own spin on the back-to-school theme by sharing 8 free and low-cost resources you can use for professional development to help you launch, manage, and expand your yarn-related business. Here’s a preview of the 8 ways you can take advantage of these free or inexpensive resources: Use your local, regional, or federal small business development center Read Connect with colleges and universities Apprentice or barter skills with a master crafter Participate in a blog challenge Take a video course Listen to a podcast Volunteer or speak at an event 1. Use your local, regional, and federal small business development centers As a small business owner, you may be entitled to free support services from the government. These services may include workshops, free clinics with legal or tax professionals, or one-to-one business counseling. Check out the Small Business Administration Learning Center or SCORE for more information. While often these organizations have limited understanding of the yarn industry, home-based businesses, and online business, they can be very helpful in providing information about “basic” business information that doesn’t feel very basic when you are starting out. You may also want to investigage business improvement districts, economic development zones, or related local initiatives to support small business growth. 2. Read In general, reading books is an inexpensive way to learn new things, but I’m going to share some tips for saving even more on books. Use your local library system. In addition to books, your local library is likely to have a variety of DVDs and audiobooks, as well as access to research databases and other resources for small business owners. Some systems even have a dedicated business branch. You may also be able to request books on business or craftsmanship via interlibrary loan from nearby library systems for free. Additionally, many libraries hold classes on-site. If your library doesn’t have the resources you need, get to know your local librarian. S/he will be more likely to help a valued local branch customer. Use a subscription service like Amazon Prime. I’m an Amazon Prime customer and affiliate. Amazon Prime is a subscription program that costs $99/year and offers several different benefits including free 2-day shipping, access to free streaming music and video, cloud storage for photos, and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. You can borrow up to one book free each month from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. Each book can be kept as long as you’d like, but you have to return it in order to take out another book.  Listen to audio books through Audible’s subscription service. Many crocheters and knitters prefer listening to audiobooks to reading physical or e-books, but audiobooks can be expensive. Audible is a subscription service operated by Amazon, and you can listen to one or two free books each month with your subscription. There are tons of great business books on Audible. Write book reviews. If you have a consistent following on your blog and/or social media accounts, approach a book publisher’s marketing or publicity department directly to request a review copy, or sign up for Netgalley, which coordinates advanced review copies of ebooks. Ask to review books that focus on the areas you’d like to develop to get the most out of your review experience, and don’t forget to properly disclose your receipt of a review copy as per FTC guidelines. 3. Connect with local colleges and universities Colleges and universities frequently have guest speakers, workshops, and conferences that are open to the public. These events may be free or low cost. As a side benefit, you may make connections with potential student interns or professors who might be willing to use a challenge facing your business as a class project. Your local business school may also have additional opportunities available, including free classes for small business owners. If your local college or university offers majors (e.g., textiles, fashion design, marketing, new media, etc.) that are relevant to your business, consider how you may connect with faculty and students. 4. Apprentice or barter skills with a master crafter Apprenticing or working closely with a local artisan or business owner can help you improve your skills rapidly under the tutelage of an expert. Approach a master and ask to be an apprentice or intern. This approach is much more time-intensive, so you should consider it more cautiously. You may also barter your skills with this person in exchange for private lessons. 5. Participate in blog challenges Information on almost anything a small business owner might need is freely available online, but the hours required for research can be daunting. Many bloggers curate this process for you by holding challenges focused on improving your skills. These challenges sometimes convert from free experiences to paid courses once they are archived, so join in when you have the chance! Some of these challenges are delivered via email, while others are posted directly to blogs. These can be difficult to find, so use Pinterest or your search engine to look for “TOPIC challenge.” 6. Take a video course Video courses are often cheaper than other forms of professional development and you are usually able to learn at your own pace and review the materials, which are added benefits. There are many great options for taking video courses online. Two of my favorite resources are Udemy and Craftsy. Udemy. Instructors create their own courses and then add them to the Udemy platform. Although courses have to be approved, this allows a wide variety of styles and options to exist. There are courses on business, computer applications and technology, photography, and more. You can read customer reviews to find the best course for you. Udemy offers both free and for sale courses, and they also frequently have sales on courses, so sign up for their email list to save even more. Craftsy. Craftsy’s courses are curated and filmed at Craftsy’s studios, so there is a more uniform appearance. The courses are affordably priced and they offer frequent sales, too. Some of the more helpful courses for yarn-related business owners are the advanced courses in crochet, knitting, or spinning, as well as photography courses. They also offer several free mini courses. You may also want to consider MOOCs (massive open online courses) from colleges and universities. You can find business MOOCs on edX here and Coursera here. These courses are often free but rarely carry college credit. 7. Listen to a podcast I’m assuming that if you listen to the Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show, you may find listening to podcasts a great way to learn. Here are some shows that I listen to regularly which I think may be helpful for growing your yarn-related business. The #AskGaryVee Show: This live Q&A format video show also has an audio version. It’s hosted by entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuk, and covers a wide range of business topics with a focus on entrepreneurship, marketing, and new media. There are several short episodes released each week. Spoiler alert: Gary is known for his colorful language, so if you are sensitive to cussing, this may not be the show for you. Web.Search.Social: This is a show co-hosted by husband and wife team Ralph and Carol Lynn Rivera. They focus on marketing and other business issues from the perspective of the small local business owner. Their show is muti-format and includes read blog posts, interviews, and conversations. Except for the read blog posts, they tend to be chatty. This isn’t a “quick tips” type of show. Etsy Conversations Podcast: This weekly show features interviews with Etsy sellers and is hosted by Ijeoma Eleazu, who I interviewed in Episode 9. Ijeoma also occassionally interviews service providers who may of use to Etsy sellers. You can learn a lot about Etsy selling, but I find the show most inspiring for its focus on creativity and inspiration. Smart Passive Income Podcast: This show is hosted by entrepreneur, Pat Flynn. It is usually an interview format and focuses on developing passive income opportunities. Tim Ferriss Show: This interview show is hosted by Tim Ferriss, the author of The 4-Hour Workweek. Tim does a great job of getting his guests to open up, and many of the shows deal with creativity, overcoming adversity, and other inspiring topics that have motivated me in my business. I usually only listen to specific episodes rather than on a weekly basis. I listen to three weekly author/self-publishing podcasts. These share valuable information about self-publishing and author marketing. The first two also talk a lot about creativity and the business side of being an artist or creative indie. The Creative Penn is hosted by author and professional speaker, Joanna Penn. Her guests often share insights on creativity and the mindset of being a business owner as a creative person. Rocking Self Publishing is a weekly interview show hosted by Simon Whistler. The Sell More Books Show is a weekly roundup of writing, self-publishing, and publishing news and is hosted by Bryan Cohen and Jim Kukral. There are two inactive shows with helpful archives you may want to listen to. How They Blog is hosted by Kat Lee. The format is mostly interviews with an occassional Q&A. The show covers all aspects of blogging. Kat is a devout Christian and many of her guests talk about Christianity and spirituality and how that impact their blogging. The show is currently on hiatus. Oh So Pinteresting was hosted by Pinterest expert, Cynthia Sanchez, who I interviewed in Episode 30. The podcast, not surprisingly, focuses on Pinterest. While some of the oldest episodes are less relevant with recent Pinterest changes, most share valuable information that you can use in your business. 8. Volunteer or speak at an event Most conferences and events are not free or low cost, which is why few of us attend regularly. Most craft industry events (as well as blogger, business, and social media conferences) rely on volunteer staff to help things run smoothly. In exchange for your services, you are typically granted access to the vendor area, demonstrations or lectures, and sometimes even to classes and workshops. You can learn more about this option in Episode 43, where I share tips for getting the most out of conferences and how to save money on attendance as a volunteer. You can also save on events by speaking. I share tips for pitching your proposals to conferences and events in Episode 33. If you already have an existing relationship with a company or brand, you may even be able to get a sponsorship to a conference. Events and conferences allow you to learn while also networking. I think this is a really valuable option for home-based business owners, so try to attend if you can! If you enjoyed this episode The Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show is no longer broadcasting. Episodes are available as a service to the yarn community. This episode originally aired in August, 2015. Be aware that content may be outdated. For Episode 12, I had a fascinating chat with Simon Whistler, host of The Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast and author of Audiobooks for Indies. We talk about Simon's career as an audio book narrator, his experience with the podcast (which has 74 episodes at the time of recording), and publishing in general. Some takeaways: Simon suggests I perform my own memoir for audiobook, but not fiction. You can break script in an audiobook and you don't have to include everything Simon's show notes are great (which made feel inadequate as I was writing these, so I expanded them to put in this "takeaways" section.) Indy authors (and podcasters) tend to be cooperative more than competitive People who succeed work hard (sounds obvious, but worth repeating) Multiple sources of income is the way to go. Having a job is risky. Location independence is one great benefit of working independently. Podcasting is a great way to make connections. In Prague, Simon can choose between 8 different Internet Providers and has a 120Mb/s connection for $20!!! Nonfiction e-books don't have to be terribly long. If you have books out, audio books are "money on the table," another possible revenue stream for your book.
