In this episode, Adam Coster, CEO of Butterscotch Shenanigans, shares his unique journey of joining and growing the indie studio with his brothers Sam and Seth. Adam discusses their beginnings in 2012, the steep challenges they faced, and how a personal family crisis redefined their mission to bring joy through games.  He then shares insights into their different projects, including the highly anticipated sequel Crashlands 2, set for release in April. Balancing roles at the studio, the evolving game industry, and the impact of subscription services, Adam offers a candid look at the realities of indie game development. He also provides useful, actionable advice for aspiring game developers and discusses the potential and limitations of incorporating AI into game dev. Join us as we explore the fascinating intersection of science, family, and grassroots game development to share joy. Bio: Adam Coster's love for science carried him through a PhD in Cellular & Molecular Biology. Turns out it wasn't science he was into, but solving hard problems in general. Building a company from scratch in the highly-competitive and rapidly-changing games industry certainly fit that bill, and so Adam joined the team immediately after defending his dissertation. Adam creates all of the web technology that powers Butterscotch Shenanigan's games and studio, crunches numbers to figure out how the industry works, leads our business development efforts, and makes sure that the team has what it needs to make great games. Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for this episode of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, that numbers 269. Last week's Episode 268 was hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon who, in case you're new to Succotash, has been hosting shows every other week with me…or rather I have been doing so with him…for over a year now. It has been a great way to make sure there is a new show every week for people to discover, recommend, and just basically rely on for weekly entertainment. Speaking of "If you're new to Succotash", thank you for listening! If you listened to last week's show, you will already know that it was a chats episode with nary a clip to be found, but dense with conversational goodness to be listened to with none other than comedian, actor, and musician Rick Overton! That episode is called "Palaverin' with Rick Overton" appropriately and is well worth the listen. aside from being on Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Podcast FM, PodBay, and others, it is also archived over at www.succotashshow.com as is every episode of Succotash that has been released in the last 10 years. This week's episode is a biggie for me. Literally the longest show I've put together for you since before the shorter, weekly format started back in 2020. It's clips and a big ole chunk of chat…I've got clips from the soundcasts Gluten Free Gaming, The Spawn Chunks, and Coffee With Butterscotch for starters, and then a rather sizable chunk from another soundcast I co-host with my friend Hunter Block called Anti Social Show. The clip features part of a conversation I was fortunate enough to have with comedian, actor, musician, and past Succotash guest (Epi55) Andy Kindler. I'm very excited to share that with you here. I would like to point out that this episode is themed in a particular way…and I wonder if you can figure out what that theme is by the end of the show? I guess we'll have to see, won't we? Anyway, let's get to it! Gluten Free GamingLisi and Lucy are two women who can't eat gluten and who want to share their favorite games with each other and everyone else! Join us as we subject each other to games and other nerdy media that we love and want to make everyone else love as well! Listen if you want to find the best gluten-free games available, or if you just want to hang. Our clip hails from  their very first  "Some Like it Honk - Untitled Goose Game" episode from August 2021 - just last month! The Spawn Chunks - A Minecraft Podcast Joel Duggan & Pixlriffs host The Spawn Chunks, a podcast all about Minecraft. We dig into Minecraft related news and development snapshots, explore game content and the Minecraft community, and craft our personal thoughts and experiences about the game we love. In a clip from their recent 150th episode (!), hosts Joel and Jonny share their thoughts on exploring the new Minecraft terrain generation in the first Caves & Cliffs Experimental Snapshot. Coffee with ButterscotchNow up to 325 episodes, Coffee with Butterscotch is the hilarity-filled official podcast of award-winning video game studio Butterscotch Shenanigans, an independent video game studio best known for its smash hit Crashlands. The podcast features founders Seth Coster (the games programmer), Adam Coster (the web programmer), Sam Coster (the artist), and other awesome people. Clipped from six years ago, Epi18 was when Sam is STILL stuck in the hospital, so in this episode had Adam and Seth carrying the torch and discussing all kinds of random crap. My question to you is, by the time you get to theend of this week's installment, will you be able to guess the theme of this particular show? Tweet @succotashshow and use the hashtag #Epi269Theme. The first 5 correct answers will receive shoutouts when I return in Epi271 with who knows what I'll have in store for you? Probably clips…maybe a chat…maybe a bit of both? I really don't know at this point in time. Anyway, I do hope you enjoyed your time and perhaps came away with a few new ideas of what to listen to next. There's plenty of shows in the archive at www.succotashshow.com and since they've been accumulating for over 10 years now, there's a rather unique overall audio documentary of the history of soundcasting…filtered thru the prism of other people's audio content from around the English-speaking parts of the globe. If you wouldn't mind writing a review of our show it would really help us out in getting inside the listening-space of as many people as possible. We'd really appreciate it. Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, and don't forget to Pass The Succotash… — Tyson Saner

In this podcast, we are joined by Seth Coster, the CEO and game programmer at Butterscotch Shenanigans, who have seen incredibly success on their video and mobile games. Best known for titles Crashlands and Levelhead, Butterscotch Shenanigans was founded by three brothers with no explicit academic background in video game creation. Seth studied to become a Certified Financial Analyst, started a law graduate program, but soon realized he enjoyed the games he created in his free time much more. Brothers Sam, Seth, and Adam Coster also host their own podcast, Coffee with Butterscotch. The reason we invited Seth was because we see an inherent connection between video game design and education, as well as his own story connecting to a lot of our work at the Human Restoration Project. (And it was awesome to have a connection through Nick, who he went to college with.) I actually introduce the concept of learning by doing by showcasing a clip from Indie Game: The Movie, where developers of Super Meat Boy explain that teaching a player to run and jump through a pop up that shows them how to do it, is not nearly as effective as just presenting a large gap and having the player keep trying until they ultimately succeed (see the show notes!)Enjoy this array of topics from game design to grading to chaotic science experiments.GUESTSSeth Coster, the CEO and game programmer at Butterscotch Shenanigans, who have seen incredibly success on their video and mobile games Crashlands and Levelhead.Nick Covington, Creative Director of Human Restoration Project, advocate of equitable gradeless learning and realignment of assessment.RESOURCESIndie Game: The Movie Super Meat Boy ClipCoffee with Butterscotch (Podcast)GDC: Design by ChaosButterscotch ShenanigansMedium (Chris McNutt): Game Design, Classroom Design, and the Faux Use of GamificationFURTHER LISTENINGS3: E2: It All Orbits Purpose feat. Hi there, Shenanities! We recorded this episode LIVE at Shenanicon 2018, so in addition to our buttery voices, you get to hear the scotchy whispers of some of your fellow Shenanites! We’ll talk about vampire flavors, nihilism pants, and why you sometimes just need a fat beat orchestra piece. If you take only one thing away from this episode, it should be this: if you come across a genie, just run in the other direction. Thanks to everyone who came out to see us at the first ever Shenanicon! Questions answered (abbreviated): - Angrymuffin: If moonlight is actually sunlight reflecting off of the moon's surface, why doesn't it kill vampires? - Senolir: Given the recent shutdown of the Apple Affiliate program, do you think Indies should be doing anything different to get their initial press coverage? Would you say this struggle is any easier when launching to steam, or does that audience still expect too much more in terms of scope to be a good platform for an Indie studio’s first few offerings anyway? - Shout64: How did you get connected with Fat Bard? Did you intentionally chose a music studio from your area? Could you talk about the importance of music/sound effects in your games, and any interesting ways you implement them? - Will: How do you handle being business partners and family? I hear a lot that partnerships are a bad idea but you seem to do well. Do you have any tips? - Mr. Ward: Where do bots come from? - Philipbear93: If businesses were people, what would their lives look like? What would Butterscotch Shenanigans be like as a person? - The_Rumpus: You're greeted by a Gamedev genie, who grants you the ability to fire any code, art assets, and robots/web-tech the three of you could possibly desire.. for the next 10 minutes. QUICK! What game do you make?! GO! To stay up to date with all of our buttery goodness subscribe to the podcast on Apple podcasts (apple.co/1LxNEnk). Adron and Wendy talk with Sam Coster and Seth Coster from indie video game studio Butterscotch Shenanigans. Together with their brother Adam, they created the hit platform-crossover game, Crashlands. Crashlands is an outlandish, story-driven action-adventure set in a world of hidden magic and high technology. The game combines classic RPG elements with crafting mechanics with vibrant, whimsical characters and a distinct sense of humor. Available on both desktop and mobile devices, Crashlands took iTunes, Steam, and Google Play by storm, with great reviews and instant popularity. We talk with Seth and Sam about the two-year development cycle for Crashlands, a project they estimated early on would only take them a few months. We discuss how their studio came together, and all the ways their college educations did NOT put them on the path to careers in video games.
