**WE HAVE A NEW MERCH STORE! Now until the end of February, get 10% off all our merch!! http://podcast-in-death-merch.printify.me/ "Brotherhood in Death" is at it's core, a book about change. And we all know how much Eve hates change. But, unfortunately for her, Roarke wants her to change her office, and that sparks an argument. The main case is really a hard read, but it's probably not a stretch to say that everyone involved in those crimes, the perpetrators and victims were profoundly changed due to the crimes that were committed. Trueheart changes from an officer to a detective. So lots of change here. This is such a great read, and a lot of that is because we love Dennis Mira and this book contains a lot of really great Dennis Mira moments. Most specifically his moments with Eve, all of which are so sweet, even when Eve is questioning him about his cousin's murder. There's also plenty of really great funny moments here, most specifically the creepy doll room, and Eve telling Peabody to "Put the dicks in the box with the asses" and Peabody answering, "You know what's going to happen with a penis and two asses in the same box, right?" Overall, a great book, and one of our favorites.
Ep. 113 In part 2 of our enlightening conversation with the esteemed Detra Trueheart, we unpack the significance of initiating and sustaining personal change and the link between physical movement, mental health, and a life led with intention. Kelly and Detra delve into the common pitfalls of a hectic lifestyle, differentiating between being busy and intentional movement. They provide a compelling dialogue on creating space for restorative physical activity and reprieve, a fundamental component of wellness for one's mind and body. Detra Trueheart shares personal anecdotes and tried-and-tested approaches, such as "habit stacking," as revealed by James Clear in his book "Atomic Habits." Embracing these incremental yet powerful changes, listeners can embark on a meaningful journey towards holistic well-being.
Ep. 112 In this episode of the Healthy Illness podcast, host Kelly Marie sits down with Detra Trueheart for an engaging conversation on the intersection between movement and mental health. As someone who lives with purpose, Detra shares her personal journey of integrating physical activity into her lifestyle when it wasn't occurring naturally. This first installment of a two-part series with Detra delves into the reasons behind her commitment to movement and how it has transformed her life. Detra discusses her history as a dancer and pageant competitor and the stark contrast to the sedentary life plagued by busyness that followed. In the wake of this realization, Detra took up walking as her movement of choice, leading to a rebirth of activity in her life. She shares how listening to one's body and knowing oneself is crucial in creating a sustainable lifestyle that includes movement. Focused on breaking the misconception of movement as merely physical exercise, this episode provides insights into how movement can be personalized and purposefully integrated into everyday life. In this episode of “Podcast in Death,” we review “Calculated in Death.” This is a book that is, according to Tara, a nice “palette cleanser” after the intensity of “Delusion in Death.” While Tara really enjoyed this book, AJ felt this one was kind of “meh,” where the case is concerned. But we all agree that there are so many really good moments in this book, including: The really dumb Candida and her white panther cub and her fancy water harvested from the snowmelt in the Andes Galahad getting pissed at Eve because he smelled the white panther cub on her The suspect throwing a baby at Eve, and Eve making that really excellent catch Baxter telling Eve that Trueheart is ready for his Detective exam, and she agrees The mother they question who’s son is refusing to take a nap, and Eve tells him it’s either a nap or jail saying, “There’s no ice cream in jail, no toys in jail, no cartoons on screen in jail. There’s just jail.” Peabody’s undercover operation as “Dolly” who works as an exotic dancer at the “Kitty Kat.” All these scenes and more make this book a really great read!
In this episode our good friend and Spreadsheet enthusiast, Dana joins us to talk about her “March Madness” game she created for our Facebook group. Essentially, she created a “bracket,” which is what they use for “March Madness” basketball. She took most of the books (she left out a few novellas) and had the books compete against each other until we finally found a “winner.” Some of the results were surprising and interesting. After that, we find out that DANA was our Mystery Rap Lyric Writer! So we surprise her with an AI version of her song as a rap song! We play the song for you in this episode, so if you want to sing along, Here are the lyrics: It’s 2061 in the NYC. There’s still murder and the killers try to flee. The homicide division will bring them to a stop, led by a bad bitch LT who’s the top murder cop. Dallas has rank in the NYPSD. She’s not interested in you taking a plea. Confessions in the box are what she demands, a bullpen of damn good cops she’s proud to command. Peabody’s her partner, a free-ager yet sturdy, dependable and true, but not yet 30. She’s got a nice rack and obsessed with her ass. Lose pants, lose pants. She chants with a gasp. Jenkinsons the DS, known for his blinding ties. Their colors and patterns will sear your eyes. He has a way with words that may leave you struck. Ring that fucker’s bell, motherfucking fuckers fuck. The DS teams up with Reineke, his partner is do or die. Reineke has the crazy socks to go with Jenkinsons tie. Sitting at his desk, he often whistles off key, and when he’s on a diet, it’s a veggie hash and a tea. Baxter is the horn dog with the model looks. Dallas teamed him up with one of her rooks. Slick in stylish suits, he is quite the flirt. He’s first in line when Nadine brings dessert. Trueheart and Baxter are quite the pair. One is seasoned, the other is square. He’s shy, blushes, and raises his hand. But good as gold, his partner would add. There are two Carmichael’s, a he and a she. She has the shield and is unflappable as can be. She’s got the pipes and loves to sing. She also bets with her partner, that’s their thing. Santiago is on the losing end of those bets. Cowboy hat on his head, he ponders and regrets. As the new guy, he wants acceptance and danger. In New York, it’s the Mets, Knicks, Giants, Rollers, and Rangers. At Cop Central, when Dallas and Peabody are running hot, Baxter and Trueheart join in and take off like a shot. Jenkinson and Reinecke won’t be far behind. Carmichael and Santiago fall in a line. They have each other’s back anytime, anyplace With thin shield on, it matters not what they face. You strike at one, you strike at them all. They will stand side by side, ready to brawl. No matter your race, creed, or sexual orientation, they don’t even care about your political affiliation. This motto for the bullpen hangs overhead. We protect and serve because you could get dead. Even if you were an asshole
In this episode, we review the latest "In Death" installment, "Encore in Death." So, if you haven't read this one yet, you may want to skip this episode. Our overall impressions of this book are that it's good, but not one of the best of the series. We liked it, but didn't LOVE it. There were some really fantastic scenes in this book, as in every book. But we didn't think the murder plot wasn't as interesting as other books. We all pretty much hated Vera from the beginning, but oddly, we don't think Vera is the worst character in this book. Maeve was much worse, and we wanted her to go down for something, too. Great moments like Eve's initial questioning of Vera, Peabody telling Eve about cheesy Christmas movies, Eve giving Peabody 5 minutes to gush about the MLDI home renovation, Eve making fun of the tourist who got her purse snatched, the bank teller who confides in Eve that after she saw the "Icove Agenda," she realized how many people are clones. Possibly the best moment in the book is when Roarke gives Eve her anniversary present early: New "ThinShield" body armor vests for everyone in her bullpen. We also find out the song that Eve and Roarke danced to on their wedding day, and it's none of the songs we talked about on our "We Plan Eve and Roarke's Wedding" episode. AND, Roarke made a major property purchase in Eve's name and we are here for it!
In this episode, AJ and Tara discuss the various members of Eve's Bullpen that have been mentioned in the books so far. In going through the list from our Wiki, we realize how many people have been mentioned only once but never mentioned again. But also, how many names have been re-used. We thought that it was confusing to have a Detective Carmichael and "Uniform" Carmichael, but did you know we also have a Detective (?) Franks and Officer Franks, and also a Officer Jonas (female) and an Officer Jonas (Male). We feel like Nora really needs a better character name generator. Then of course we go through all the regulars in the squad like Baxter, Trueheart, Jenkinson, Rieneke, Carmichael, Santiago and Uniform Officers Shelby and Carmichael. Each one of these characters has their own unique characteristics and role on the team. From Baxter's fancy suits, to Trueheart's blushing, to Jenkinson's ties to Santiago losing bets all the time, we love every member of Eve's Bullpen! BTW...our new head canon is that Santiago will be played by Pedro Pascal. We also talk about our listeners favorite members of Eve's bullpen, and their favorite moments with all the members of Eve's squad.
Hi, Everyone! This week we are talking about "Strangers in Death," Nora's homage to "Strangers on a Train." It's an interesting book with some really great character interactions. AJ suggests that the main theme for this book is "payback." Paying back a debt, or owing someone for services rendered. The main murder mystery is definitely a "payback" situation, but also, we see Tiko in this book, who gives Eve a tip about some thieves who are running a wallet/purse theft and identity theft operation. In payment for that, Eve arranges for Tiko to get a reward. Then to pay Eve back for the reward, Tiko's grandmother gives Eve a pie. This theme also plays out in the very short argument that Eve and Roarke have over money. Roarke doesn't understand why Eve doesn't ask him for money when she's short, and Eve tries to explain that she would feel in debt to him, and that she would need to pay him back. Our villain here is Ava Anders who is a complete b*tch. Eve doesn't like Ava from the very beginning...mostly because Ava reminds Eve of "Magdabitch" and sees her takedown of Ava as almost a payback by proxy for Magdalena. Some really fantastic banter between Eve and Peabody and Eve and Roarke. Feeney is sick and being a drama queen, Baxter has a really tough case going cold, and is a bit sad when they find out who's behind not only Eve's case but his. Also: CHARLES AND LOUISE GET ENGAGED!!

This is our longest episode ever, everyone! This book is ultimately about not just being a survivor, but how people survive, especially after the loss of a loved one. We see this play out not only with Nixie, but with Eve surviving the death of her father, Roarke surviving the death of his mother, Summerset surviving the death of his daughter. This is a really dense book about great loss and how people cope with that. Besides this being a very dense book where a lot goes on, there are several weird glitches that happen between the book and the audiobook. So much so that we wonder if maybe Susan Ericksen is f***ing with people. We do know that it probably is not that, but that's our new head canon now. Also part of our new head canon: Roarke secretly sends bags of coffee to members of the NYPSD, with the understanding they will never tell Eve. Summerset has to follow Eve and Roarke around with Lysol and a Black Light. Summerset has a special droid to specifically go in every day to change and wash Eve and Roarke's sheets, but also to sanitize the holo-room and gym. This is one of the only books in the series that makes pretty much everyone who is a fan of this series ugly cry. The scene where Eve and Roarke take Nixie to the morgue so she can say good-bye to her family is rough, and we had to stop talking about it, or we would have had ourselves ugly crying on the episode. Roarke and Eve both do some really dumb stuff in this book, but some really good stuff like bringing Mavis in to meet Nixie and giving Nixie a new family. And, like Eve, we all say: Thank God for Summerset.

Plus, he reveals which Station 19 star is the biggest prankster and which former Grey's Anatomy co-star he misses the most. Jason pays tribute to the legacy of Super-Girl Jadyn, who courageously fought cancer for 9 1/2 years. He also shares the important work he's doing with the bi-partisan anti-gun violence organization The 97 Percent and steps we can all take to make a difference.

Plus, Amy opens up and shares her journey of healing from trafficking and sexual assault.
In this episode, we talk about all the "Bromances" in the "In Death" Series! For the first half of the episode, Tara was unable to join us, but she joins us in the second half of the episode with some amazing insights as always. First "Bromance" we talk about is Roarke and Brian Kelly, who are AJ's "BrOTP." Brian is a perfect friend for Roarke because he's super loyal but also just in general a chill dude who sees the fun in life, and Roarke needs that kind of influence in his life. Also, we think Brian needs to take a trip to New York to party with Eve's bullpen. Second we talk about Baxter and Trueheart. We love how taking Trueheart on as a partner has turned Baxter into a more rounded character, and Baxter is helping take just enough of the "shine" off Trueheart. Also, who doesn't love that Jenkinson and Reineke match their ties and socks? When Tara joins us, we talk about everyone's favorite "Bromances," Roarke and Feeney and Roarke and McNab. We love that Roarke bonds with Feeney over electronic and everything Irish, and he bonds with McNab over electronics and fandoms. Also: Roarke shipped Peabody and McNab before even Peabody and McNab did. Roarke is the Captain of the Peabody and McNab Ship. We also go off on a little debate about smoking. Also: CALL US, WHOOPI GOLDBERG!

He also chats with Amy and Scott about what made the world fall in love with Jessica Simpson on “The Newlyweds” and how we can ensure greater representation for the LGBTQ+ community in front of and behind the camera. Amy and Vinnie reminisce about the excitement of starting their careers in New York in their 20's and Vinnie shares his passion for helping people unlock their creativity.

As you all know by now, Jen and AJ are a mess when Tara isn't on the podcast to keep us in line. We attempt to talk about all the times that Eve declares that something is or should be a law or rule. But, as usual, with just Jen and AJ there, the conversation goes quite a bit off the rails and we end up talking about lots of unrelated stuff, like Rick Springfield appearing in a Saturday Morning Cartoon called "Mission Magic" early in his career.
Olympic gold medalist Meryl Davis joins Trueheart to discuss her journey to the top of the Olympic podium and the lessons she learned along the way. Meryl also chats with Amy and Scott about her humanitarian work with the non-profit Figure Skating In Detroit, her new children's book Moon Walk: Forever By Your Side and how social media is not always what it seems.
We're back with another "We Review the Reviews" Episode! This time, we review the reviews of "Portrait in Death"! As usual, the reviews are what we would expect. One reviewer says the sex scenes were "Boring and Granny Style," another said "the conversations made me want to gag," and another said "she has the weirdest names for her characters....it's really annoying." BUT, we do read a couple of really good reviews including one that said, "I thought I couldn't love these characters more, but I do with each book," and another who said "I've read a lot of series fiction and I have never seen one just continue to go from strength to strength like the In Death series. J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts is truly something else as a creative mind and a writer who can turn them out yet keep them fresh as spring daisies." and also: "Susan Ericksen brings these characters alive, giving each an authentic voice with a genius of her own." We couldn't agree more! Enjoy!
This week we talk about the Candy Thief!! Who could it be? Is it Feeney? Roarke? Peabody? Is it the whole squad? An initiation rite? Is Eve eating her own candy and then forgetting? We talk about all of these theories on this weeks show! Also: Listen to Caitlin's new podcast, Review THIS!: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/review-this/id1578607622
In our longest episode yet, we review "Portrait in Death"!! This book starts out very good for Eve with Summerset getting ready to leave for a two week vacation. Then it goes to shit really quickly for Eve when Summerset falls down the stairs and breaks his leg, then when Eve is dealing with that, Nadine calls her and tells her that there has been a murder. Eve goes to investigate the murder, which is a creepy one where the killer is killing college students then posing them and taking photos of them after death. But we quickly find out that really, this book is not about the murder. This is one of those "In Death" books where the personal stuff happening with the characters...in this case Roarke... is really what the book is about and the murders are just a side story. In this book, if things get bad for Eve, they get even worse for Roarke. Because he meets Moira O'Bannion who tells him that the woman who Roarke thought was his mother (Meg Roarke) was actually not his mother. His real mother was a woman named "Siobhan Brody." He doesn't believe it until he locks himself into his secret office and looked up information on his unregistered computer and finds that yes, in fact, Moira O'Bannion is correct. He handles this information VERY badly, is a dick to both Eve and Summerset, and we really dislike him for a bit. Later, he makes up with both Eve and Summerset, but pisses Eve off again by flying off to Ireland by himself to look into this information himself. He meets up with Brian Kelly, and they lean on one of Patrick Roarke's old friends until they get the truth of what happened to Siobhan Brody. Then Roarke and Brian get drunk together and that leads to this really amazing scene where Roarke drunk calls Eve. Back in New York, Eve and Feeney are having a beer, and Feeney tells Eve that regardless of what's going on with her current case, she should be in Ireland with Roarke. So, Eve drops everything and flies off to Ireland to support Roarke. Again, another really lovely scene with Roarke seeing a jet-copter flying through the mist to his Aunt's house and Eve stepping out. When Eve and Roarke fly back to New York, they are almost immediately thrown back into Eve's case when another dead body is found. This time, it's really emotional because the victim is Crack's sister. Just as they start to close in on the killer, the killer kidnaps poor Trueheart and there's a race to save him. This whole book is a LOT, but it's SO GOOD!! We hope you agree!!
Hey, Everyone! Here we are again with another LOOOONG episode! But, "Purity in Death" is so dense and there's so much happens in this book, we really needed 2hrs to go through it all. In this one, there is a vigilante group that is targeting criminals who have committed crimes against young kids, and use a computer virus to give these people an actual virus that causes their brains to explode. The unfortunate thing is that these people take some innocent people out with them, and that's not okay. The story opens with Eve getting a call from Trueheart who had answered a distress call and found Louie K Cogburn beating a couple of his neighbors with a baseball bat. Trueheart stunned Cogburn, and even though the stunner was on a low setting, Cogburn dies. When Eve enters the scene, she sees that on Cogburn's computer, there is a message that says: "Absolute Purity Achieved." Later, Morris tells Eve that Cogburn had some sort of virus in his brain that caused his brain to explode. It was the virus that killed Cogburn, not Trueheart stunning him. During the course of her investigation, Eve finds out that a vigilante group calling themselves "The Purity Seekers" is responsible for a computer virus that is somehow transferring to humans, and they are sending it to people they consider trash humans. The "Purity" theme is played out in many ways here in this book. "The Purity Seekers" is taking out their vengeance on people who they feel took away the "Purity" of their children. But also, someone like Trueheart has some of his own purity taken away by having Cogburn's death on his conscience. But the other underlying theme in this book is the theme of "family." Again, "The Purity Seekers" are avenging their family members by killing the people who hurt them. But also, in this book, Eve realizes that she has created her own family with Roarke and her squad. Also, Mavis seems to be starting a family as she announces to Eve that she is pregnant. Eve and Roarke are a bit at odds in this book because Roarke personally knew one of the murder victims, Chadwick Fitzhugh, and Roarke is not sorry at all that Fitzhugh is dead. Roarke, as we know from Vengeance, Roarke has also dispensed his own form of justice out to the men who killed Summerset's daughter. He does recognize on some level that what "The Purity Seekers" have done is not right, but it's not as black and white to him as it is to Eve. Eve's position on this whole thing is that while she understands wanting to get revenge on trash humans who prey on kids, she is more worried about the innocent people who have lost their lives in the process. She also wonders where the line will be drawn. If left unchecked, would these people decide to go after people for more minor crimes or just because they dislike them? That possibility is unacceptable to Eve, and she can't let that stand. A couple of the innocent people who suffer because of this computer virus are Kevin Halloway, who contracts the virus after trying to troubleshoot Cogburn's computer system, and McNab, who Halloway stuns as he suffers the effects of the virus. Halloway also takes Feeney hostage in a very intense scene. Halloway ends up dead, and McNab ends up paralyzed on his right side. Eve feels so bad about McNab, she convinces Roarke to pull some strings and get McNab released early so that he can recover at Eve and Roarke's mansion. Proving to all observant readers that she really is, as Roarke puts it, "Lieutenant Softie." We get to see Jamie Lingstrom again in this episode when Roarke brings Jamie in to help them try to neutralize the computer virus on the infected computer. We get a really amazing button moment with Roarke when he decides to test the infected machine, risking getting the infection himself. Dumbass. He understands the risks and takes the button out of his pocket to rub it for luck before he goes ahead with the test. Later, Eve finds out he risked his life in that way, and is pissed. Eve is very annoyed in this book also because she's having to deal with New York Deputy Mayor Jenna Franco and also with the Mayor's media liason, Lee Chang. Eve is annoyed by having to do media appearances anyway, but both of these people are really annoying, wanting Eve to do more media appearances than she has time for. There's also a couple of good scenes with Webster, who, even though he is in Internal Affairs, he is really very much on Eve's side. Later, Eve puts together an op in order to try and save someone from the virus, and in the midst of that, Peabody gets hurt, and now Eve is really pissed, and decides she needs to take down this group hard. BUT...there's a bit of a twist at the end, and it's amazing. Commendations: Jen gives her commendation to Baxter, being his first time on Eve's "Team," and he takes on Trueheart. Tara gives her commendation to Whitney, because he trusts Eve and has her six. AJ gives her commendation to Jamie, because as Jamie says: "Genius has no age."
This week, we review Witness in Death, and this is another LONG episode! Lots of emotional stuff happening with Eve mostly, but also with Peabody, and a lot of twists and turns in the case, so... This was the first "In Death" book that A.J. had read, and we've said several times that she came away from this book with the impression that Roarke was a dick. So, we point out all of the reasons for that including him saying to Eve about Areena Mansfield: "No, I've never slept with her," and then later, "Jealous, Darling Eve?" He also reacted to Eve setting up the dinner for him by saying, "What do you want?" and pissing her off. PLUS he makes a joke about watching Nadine's sex tape, and that's a DEFINITE dick move. PLUS: Dude, YOU DON'T STEAL SOMEONE ELSE'S USED SEX TOY!!! That's just gross. BUT...we should also say that when you read these books from the beginning, by the time you come to this one, you understand Roarke enough to know why he's not necessarily a dick in these situations, that's just how he is. AND, the times that Roarke is a real sweetheart to Eve and just an all around good guy to everyone else far outweigh the times he's a dick. Still: Dude, YOU DON'T STEAL SOMEONE ELSE'S USED SEX TOY!!! That's just gross. Anyway... Because of the nature of the case in this book, it's bringing up a lot of stuff for Eve having to do with her past, so she has a few really bad moments. Including one that made her physically ill afterward, but then Eve and Roarke have sex...after she had puked...and that just seems gross. But, it's another example of Roarke taking care of Eve. It's interesting though, because this case is also making Eve think about all the things that Roarke does for her, when she doesn't always (or ever) reciprocate. So, Eve decides to set up a romantic dinner for Roarke (which he almost ruins because: dick), and that romantic dinner scene is so well written and probably one of the best scenes in the series. There's also some rocky relationship stuff with Peabody in this book, where Peabody is continuing this stupid love triangle with Charles and McNab, which could easily be solved with some good communication between them. But also, Eve and Peabody's failure to communicate properly leads to a little blow-up between them having to do with this love triangle Peabody finds herself in. In a nutshell, in this book, half the problems come from people communicating, and the other half of the problems come from people not communicating. But, the good part is that Roarke steps in to give McNab some advice about how to win Peabody over, and it may just work. Then, during the apprehension of the main suspect, Trueheart goes down in the line of duty, and Eve is blaming herself. Later, she brings Trueheart a present of a video game that he can play during his recovery, and finds out that she has "Authorization One," which means that she doesn't get charged for any Roarke Industries products. This pisses Eve off, but we think that Eve needs to start trying to be fucking grateful for the things Roarke does for her, including occasionally deciding what she should eat, because if he didn't, she would eat like a 5-Year-Old. Also, did we mention: Dude, YOU DON'T STEAL SOMEONE ELSE'S USED SEX TOY!!! That's just gross.
