Formed in Vancouver in 1994, Mossy Ledge consists of James Milligan (vocals), Dean (guitar/bass/vocals), Kirn Khaira (bass), Ryan Mason (drums), and Den Zee (guitar). On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the singer and songwriter from a legendary ‘90s (and beyond) band alongside a relative newcomer whose songs he deeply influenced: Adam Duritz and Sean Barna. If you don't know his name, you certainly know Duritz's band, Counting Crows. Active since 1991, the group has sold 20 million albums, enjoyed a bunch of big hits, and been a powerhouse touring act for that entire run. To his great credit, Duritz—as you'll hear in this chat—has never stopped engaging with new music, both as a songwriter and a sort of talent scout. He started two different festivals that you'll hear about, the Outlaw Roadshow and Underwater Sunshine, which are built like jam sessions for both established and up-and-coming songwriters. Counting Crows continues to release new music, too, including a lengthy EP called Butter Miracle, Suite One, which was recorded during pandemic times and showcases a slightly glammier side of the band. Today's other guest, Sean Barna, was a drummer who was directly inspired to start writing songs after hearing Counting Crows. In some sort of amazing bit of serendipity, Barna found himself in Duritz's orbit, and the two became fast friends and, eventually, guests on each other's music. Barna recently signed to the venerated indie label Kill Rock Stars, which just released his second album, An Evening at Macri Park, which is a sort of concept album about modern-day queer life in Brooklyn. It's emotional and catchy in all the right ways. Check out the song “Be a Man,” which features Duritz on guest vocals.  In this fun and wide-ranging conversation, Duritz and Barna talk about playing shows together, the perfection that is a BLT, a bit of hazing that happened when Barna opened for Counting Crows, and lots more. There's even a lengthy story from Duritz that starts with badly injuring his leg and ends with him looking for his underwear. Enjoy. Stephen Kellogg Grammy nominated American Singer-Songwriter and AuthorExcited to share my special guest with you!  Stephen Kellogg is a Grammy nominated American singer-songwriter and author who has toured worldwide and been named Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year.  Stephen is a TED-X speaker and has a documentary about his music travels called “Last Man Standing” on Amazon Prime. His new book “Objects in the Mirror: Thoughts on a Perfect Life from an Imperfect Person” is part humor, part memoir and part self-help. Most of all, Stephen Kellogg is a storyteller and connects with his audience in a profound way.Over the last decade, New England native Stephen Kellogg has performed more than 1500 concerts around the world, raised thousands of dollars for causes close to his heart, been named Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year, and penned singles for artists like platinum selling rock band O.A.R and American Idol winner Nick Fradiani. Stephen’s most recent writing work with legendary guitarist Robert Randolph, led to a 2017 Grammy nomination for "Best Contemporary Blues Record." He delivered a TEDx Talk on job satisfaction, the key note speech for the prestigious photography summit WRKSHP, and was invited to speak to the students at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO on the topics of social justice and 'finding your voice.’ He has appeared as a contributing author in several publications and in 2019, will be publishing his first full length book entitled “Objects in the Mirror: A Storyteller’s Take On What Matters Most.”Kellogg’s newest studio album, “Objects in the Mirror”, was recorded over the course of a single week in Nashville, TN. Produced by Will Hoge and featuring twelve songs that explore American life in 2018, the decision was made to track the band live, keeping the results in tact with minimal overdubs. “I wanted to make an album that sounded and felt like the ones I grew up loving; Bob Seger and Cat Stevens, Tom Petty and Rod Stewart. Emotional records where the songs relate to each other and the lyrics are front and center. That’s my true north.” Kellogg’s emotion has never been in question with one music blogger succinctly describing his music as ‘a beautiful display of—well, his heart.” And as for the lyrics, Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz can lately be heard singing their praises on his ‘Underwater Sunshine’ podcasts.  While Stephen Kellogg may have remained underneath the radar for some in the mainstream, he has succeeded in building a meaningful career alongside many of the best in the business. He’s sung duets with Sara Bareilles, Josh Ritter, Rosanne Cash, and Pat Monahan of Train and participated in the 2018 “Garden Of Dreams’ concert at the Beacon Theater. He is a singer, songwriter, record producer and frontman for the band Counting Crows, which has sold more than 200 million records internationally. Adam Duritz is also co-host of the podcast "Underwater Sunshine," a conversation series he does with author & journalist James Campion. He is also the Executive Producer of "Underwater Sunshine Fest," a music festival. The debut album of the band Counting Crows is entitled "August and Everything After" was released in September 1993. Duritz had written a song called "August and Everything After," but it was not included on that record. 25 years later the song was released as a single.
